He's also unofficial metric of success in the music industry; if he parodies one of your songs, you _know_ you've made it. Amish Paradise, Eat It, Fat, Tacky, Smells Like Nirvana, Word Crimes, Trapped In The Drive-Thru... There are so many great songs.

Something very cool about Weird Al was that he never required licensing to create his music. He would personally sell his pitch, ask for permission, and if they said no, he moved on. Eventually his name was so unbelievably widespread that a cover of his, would make originals pop-off generating original artists' revenue. It was a better time. Creativity is WHO the guy is.

@@islandmankWell, no, there were others, but it was generally linked to some particular issue. "Chicken Pot Pie" got a no, for example, because "Live and Let Die"'s original artist was vegetarian-the irony being that Al had turned vegetarian by this time, too, but he just thought it was funny anyway, lol. Eminem strangely gave multiple yeses to album tracks but a no to "Couch Potato"'s video, for another example.

The first Weird Al song I heard was when I was a kid in the 80s: "Eat It" - a parody of Michael Jackson's "Beat It". After that there was a slew of songs. In the early 90s he spoke with Kurt Cobain on the phone about doing a parody of "Smells Like Teen Spirit". Cobain wondered if it was gonna be about food. Weird Al said something to the effect that it was gonna be about how no one knows the lyrics to your songs. Other artists have gone on record saying they were honored when approached by Weird Al because that is a sight that you're "made it" as an artist.

Like so many things Weird Al puts in his videos, the door-locking joke actually works on two levels.
Yes, it's a convertible, so locking the doors doesn't do anything. But locking the doors is the stereotypical reaction of middle-class and above white people when they find themselves in an African -American neighborhood. Reversing it that way just cranks up the funny.
