Hell of a song. I grew up around the Charlie Daniel's Band. My mom worked for him here in Tennessee. I use to sit on his lap at Christmas because he played Santa for all of his employees kids. Had a tire swing in front of the log cabin, which was his office. Really good man.
Wow I remember he visited some business in the 80's (I think a car dealership) in Oak Ridge, TN and I got a signed t-shirt from him with my parents. Wish I still had the shirt but again I was in elementary school at the time.
As someone who has played the fiddle, I can tell you Charlie was one of a kind. He was self taught. You can tell by the way he holds the fiddle. No one would ever teach you hold a fiddle that way....but it didn't hold him back. He's a fantastic fiddle player.

Someone teaching you to play fiddle will teach you to rest it on your shoulder perpendicular to your body. He also has a unique grip on the bow. That's a man who taught himself to play. The violinist starts making elitist comments about how fiddlers can't really play the violin or something, and Charlie picks up his fiddle and plays a piece of classical violin music perfectly. Then challenges the violinist to do what he does. I don't know if it's a true story or a tall tale, but I'm inclined to believe it.

Charlie Daniels was not only an exceptional musician and singer, but he was always giving and helping others, especially our wounded warriors, Vets, and sick children. Broke my heart when he passed, but I know that God must have a special place for him in Heaven.

Good video. I'm a 56 year old white man from middle Tennessee. I grew up listening to Charlie Daniels. He was a hero of mine. He came to my home town and did a concert back around 2010. I waited in line and got him to autograph a fiddle for my daughter and a picture for me. It was a highlight of my life to meet and talk to this legend. He did so much for others, including our troops over seas. I'm glad to see you getting a little taste of his music. He was a good man. Thank you for highlighting him. I always enjoy watching you guys. Keep up the good work. If you guys are ever around Winchester, TN, I would love to cook you a good steak dinner.
The world was truly a better place when Charlie was in it, he passed away in 2020 at age 83. When I was much younger in Wilmington, when Charlie came home to visit, he came into a diner outside of town where I was working. Someone called the owner who quickly came in. Before Charlie left, after quickly meeting each of us wait staff on the floor, he asked to meet all of the cooks and dishwashers behind the scenes. Charlie knew they were the ones who made the world go round. He was a gentle soul, truly dismissive of his fame, one of a kind.

He offered it though, like a wolf laying down a bread pan to tempt a chicken. With no hesitation, the chicken fearlessly took the bait in the presence of the wolf, and then walked away completely unharmed. The chicken wasn’t afraid of the wolf. He already knew that dog wouldn’t bite.
I’ve once told friends that this one of the greatest songs to have been recorded in music. It has a hero, a villain: good versus evil. It has movement like an opera with elements of rock country rap and all with real instruments. Great musicianship on top of all that. At the end of the song you can’t help but be happy to know that the boy beat the devil’s arrogant ass. Then to call him a sonofabitch. Lol great reaction guys!!
The coolest thing about this performance was that the keyboard player had his arm in a cast. Now that's commitment---playing with a broken arm. This was a hug hit back in the Summer of '79. By the way, there were two versions off this song, one with "son of a bitch" and one with "son of a gun". They played the "son of a gun" version on regular radio, and the other version on more alternative stations/live performances only.
I've heard BOTH versions on the radio. Guess they played the unedited version by mistake when I heard it on there. ANYWAY, I've always LOVED this song and will ALWAYS LOVE THE CDB !!! I saw them at the JUNE JAM hosted by the band ALABAMA back in 1986. (Think that's the correct year.) When they started playing "The Devil Went Down To Georgia) I was way back from the stage (outside venue) and I held up the ALABAMA flag. Charlie saw the flag I was holding up and he commented on it ! I forget what he said, but, I could tell he was talking about my flag cause he pointed straight at me and they put a spotlight on me - it was late in the afternoon and getting kinda dark. And, having been an ALABAMA FAN for so long, since ALABAMA started it, I had been wanting to go to the June Jam, but we could never afford it. So, we saved up for it and my Daddy went to that June Jam with me - the one and only JAM I ever went to ! It was a time I'll never forget even though I can't remember all the details. Had a wonderful time for the three days we went to enjoy all the other events going on. 😉

Charlie was a multi-instrumentalist. Fiddle, violin, mandolin, guitar and probably some others that I forgot to list. He passed away in 2020 from a stroke. Rest in peace.
I saw him live in 2017 and it was a great show. He even played a few electric guitar solos, and I had no clue he also played guitar. His licks on the guitar are very similar to his fiddle playing. RIP Charlie👍🏼

I was privileged in college, when he performed in my Kansas hometown, to work as an usher for his concert and hang out a bit with him in the green room. Such a darned nice guy.
Thirty-some years ago I saw this performance live in the front row, only 15 feet away from the man and the band who were playing on a circular rotating stage in a theater that only held maybe 200 people. It was a double billed concert with another Legend, Kenny Rogers. I was close enough to see up under the shadow of Charlie's Stetson to be one of the few people who can say they looked Charlie Daniels in the eye. I blew him a kiss and he winked back.

I was a kid when the song came out. It was so popular, it was one of those songs where, for the first few weeks it was out, any time it came on the radio, the whole room (or car) would stop talking and listen to the song. It just naturally commanded our attention.
I was at summer camp when this song was new in 1979 and we reacted just as you said. Even when it wasn't on we were talking about it. I remember one kid said the first thing he is going to do when he comes home from camp was to buy this record.

My uncles dad was his first bass player when they were young adults for years. Ended up becoming successful in Bakersfield Ca not for music though. He told my dad and uncle he knew him cause they were huge fans and they never believed him so he took them to a concert, no tickets or nothing and walked to the band entry in the back and told the security guard “tell Charlie Ray Is here” and like 2 minutes later he walked out himself and gave him a huge hug and took them all into his green room and hung out. Pretty awesome.
I was lucky enough to see Charlie Daniels a few years back. Before the concert, he had a free meet and greet, where he autographed photos that he had someone passing out.(also free) He spent time talking with everyone and taking pictures. Then he played and sang for 2 hours. He was a few months shy of 80 years old at the time.

We went to the Daniel family reunion every year down in Elizabethtown, NC. Charlie didn't make it there too often, as he was always busy. He loved America and the military, and was a true patriot. I got to see the Charlie Daniels Band perform this live about 15 years ago and they were fantastic. Brought back childhood memories of listening to the song on the radio. As for Roots, back when there were only three networks, they used to have "event television" in the form of mini series, which typically ran each night for a week. Roots was one of the first, and definitely the one that left the biggest lasting impression. I was just 7, but I watched it all. Talk about a powerful history lesson! It was so successful, mini series were produced every year and became huge ratings draws. I guess it was our version of "binge-watcing" back in the day.

Terry, Apparently Roots was fictionalized just to attract viewers. I learned this recently while watching these guys watch a Thomas Sowell video. You might want to check it out. Sowell is such a great historian and teacher.
Charlie Daniels was considered in the genre called Outlaw Country. Some othwr greats in this genre were Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, Hank Williams Jr. All amazing artists. I grew up with all theirmusic because my dad is a musician and he and his friends would get together once a month or so and play their music. This song came out in 1979 and was an instant classic. He wrote this song to shut upclassical players who said he couldn't play "real violin" music. He showed them all because Johnny's solo is so technically difficult there are still only a few musicians in the world who can nail it.
A good song is a good song. I love watching people discover new things. I love that by the end of the song they were all bobbing their heads and rooting for Johnny!
Heard a CD interview from way back in the day. Charlie worked in a creosote coating mill in Eastern NC. He and another guy were called into office for lay-off interview. CD told boss that he had a part time job with a small band playing locally. He said to let the other man work and he took voluntary lay-off. SO GLAD HE DID. Rest in strength CD.

The world was truly a better place when Charlie was in it, he passed away in 2020 at age 83. When I was much younger in Wilmington, when Charlie came home to visit, he came into a diner outside of town where I was working. Someone called the owner who quickly came in. Before Charlie left, after quickly meeting each of us wait staff on the floor, he asked to meet all of the cooks and dishwashers behind the scenes. Charlie knew they were the ones who made the world go round. He was a gentle soul, truly dismissive of his fame, one of a kind.

I’ve once told friends that this one of the greatest songs to have been recorded in music. It has a hero, a villain: good versus evil. It has movement like an opera with elements of rock country rap and all with real instruments. Great musicianship on top of all that. At the end of the song you can’t help but be happy to know that the boy beat the devil’s arrogant ass. Then to call him a sonofabitch. Lol great reaction guys!!

The coolest thing about this performance was that the keyboard player had his arm in a cast. Now that's commitment---playing with a broken arm. This was a hug hit back in the Summer of '79. By the way, there were two versions off this song, one with "son of a bitch" and one with "son of a gun". They played the "son of a gun" version on regular radio, and the other version on more alternative stations/live performances only.

I've heard BOTH versions on the radio. Guess they played the unedited version by mistake when I heard it on there. ANYWAY, I've always LOVED this song and will ALWAYS LOVE THE CDB !!! I saw them at the JUNE JAM hosted by the band ALABAMA back in 1986. (Think that's the correct year.) When they started playing "The Devil Went Down To Georgia) I was way back from the stage (outside venue) and I held up the ALABAMA flag. Charlie saw the flag I was holding up and he commented on it ! I forget what he said, but, I could tell he was talking about my flag cause he pointed straight at me and they put a spotlight on me - it was late in the afternoon and getting kinda dark. And, having been an ALABAMA FAN for so long, since ALABAMA started it, I had been wanting to go to the June Jam, but we could never afford it. So, we saved up for it and my Daddy went to that June Jam with me - the one and only JAM I ever went to ! It was a time I'll never forget even though I can't remember all the details. Had a wonderful time for the three days we went to enjoy all the other events going on. 😉

He really played a mean fiddle.
Charlie was a multi-instrumentalist. Fiddle, violin, mandolin, guitar and probably some others that I forgot to list. He passed away in 2020 from a stroke. Rest in peace.
I saw him live in 2017 and it was a great show. He even played a few electric guitar solos, and I had no clue he also played guitar. His licks on the guitar are very similar to his fiddle playing. RIP Charlie👍🏼

I was privileged in college, when he performed in my Kansas hometown, to work as an usher for his concert and hang out a bit with him in the green room. Such a darned nice guy.
Thirty-some years ago I saw this performance live in the front row, only 15 feet away from the man and the band who were playing on a circular rotating stage in a theater that only held maybe 200 people. It was a double billed concert with another Legend, Kenny Rogers. I was close enough to see up under the shadow of Charlie's Stetson to be one of the few people who can say they looked Charlie Daniels in the eye. I blew him a kiss and he winked back.

I was a kid when the song came out. It was so popular, it was one of those songs where, for the first few weeks it was out, any time it came on the radio, the whole room (or car) would stop talking and listen to the song. It just naturally commanded our attention.
I was at summer camp when this song was new in 1979 and we reacted just as you said. Even when it wasn't on we were talking about it. I remember one kid said the first thing he is going to do when he comes home from camp was to buy this record.

Charlie Daniels was a true inspiration, he came to Florida yearly and raised multimillion dollars for a non profit organization called The Angelus where he’d play and strum his fiddle also open to the public and turned over every dime made! The Angelus is homes surrounded in the woods for disabled and handicapped. He’s the reason it still exists today! ❤ Charlie Daniels

My uncles dad was his first bass player when they were young adults for years. Ended up becoming successful in Bakersfield Ca not for music though. He told my dad and uncle he knew him cause they were huge fans and they never believed him so he took them to a concert, no tickets or nothing and walked to the band entry in the back and told the security guard “tell Charlie Ray Is here” and like 2 minutes later he walked out himself and gave him a huge hug and took them all into his green room and hung out. Pretty awesome.

I was lucky enough to see Charlie Daniels a few years back. Before the concert, he had a free meet and greet, where he autographed photos that he had someone passing out.(also free) He spent time talking with everyone and taking pictures. Then he played and sang for 2 hours. He was a few months shy of 80 years old at the time.

We went to the Daniel family reunion every year down in Elizabethtown, NC. Charlie didn't make it there too often, as he was always busy. He loved America and the military, and was a true patriot. Charlie became a born again Christian & spoke the word & his love for Jesus Christ everywhere he went. He was 80 when he died & I wondered if he got a golden fiddle!
OMG, I was at this concert in Saratoga in 1979! I wasn't a country fan at all but it was back in high school and the tix were $6 for lawn seats so of course we went to all the concerts we could. This song was wild! Love all your reactions.
I got to see the Charlie Daniels Band perform this live about 15 years ago and they were fantastic. Brought back childhood memories of listening to the song on the radio. As for Roots, back when there were only three networks, they used to have "event television" in the form of mini series, which typically ran each night for a week. Roots was one of the first, and definitely the one that left the biggest lasting impression. I was just 7, but I watched it all. Talk about a powerful history lesson! It was so successful, mini series were produced every year and became huge ratings draws. I guess it was our version of "binge-watcing" back in the day.

Charlie Daniels was considered in the genre called Outlaw Country. Some othwr greats in this genre were Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, Hank Williams Jr. All amazing artists. I grew up with all theirmusic because my dad is a musician and he and his friends would get together once a month or so and play their music. This song came out in 1979 and was an instant classic. He wrote this song to shut upclassical players who said he couldn't play "real violin" music. He showed them all because Johnny's solo is so technically difficult there are still only a few musicians in the world who can nail it.
A good song is a good song. I love watching people discover new things. I love that by the end of the song they were all bobbing their heads and rooting for Johnny!

Heard a CD interview from way back in the day. Charlie worked in a creosote coating mill in Eastern NC. He and another guy were called into office for lay-off interview. CD told boss that he had a part time job with a small band playing locally. He said to let the other man work and he took voluntary lay-off. SO GLAD HE DID. Rest in strength CD.
