The name Epica came from a Kamelot album from 2003. Singer Simone Simons was 15 when she first heard an early Nightwish album, and she changed her studies from pop singing to classical singing. She was still a teenager when Epica recorded their first song, 'Cry for the Moon', a video I recommend.
I got to see them live myself, once, at a small venue of 100 or so people, in 2014. I've been a fan since their 2007 album, but I did hear Simone when she appeared in a Kamelot song in 2004, 'The Haunting'.

Epica is very diverse in their songs. This one is one of their heeavier songs and it is usually the closing song for their live concerts. If you want to see moe of Epica, I suggest you check out their latest live video (always go for their live videos!) "Code of Life" ruclips.net/video/i597p11qCQo/видео.html
It it from a concert this spring and the video has been released just a few days ago. So beside it being a very good song, you will also be among the earlier reactors to do this song.

You're right 7:32, the pioneers of symphonic metal are the band "Therion" in 1996, in 1997 historical bands like *Haggard* came out, having roots in death metal. *Within Temptation*, using the influence of gothic metal synth, *Nightwish* followed a similar trend, employing an evocative power metal style.
In the early 2000s, a new wave of symphonic metal emerged, with many bands. *After Forever*, *Epica*, and *Edenbridge*, in which "Floor" sings with *After Forever*, and obviously *Epica* with Simons
I will give you some recommendations to react to "EPICA".
-EPICA - Sensorium (Live At Paradiso-OFFICIAL LIVE VIDEO)
    -EPICA - Unleashed (OFFICIAL LIVE)
-Epica - Sancta Terra (feat Floor Jansen) Live Retrospect show
-Epica - Cry For The Moon

That took a minute, but good to start on this rabbit hole! I agree that Unleashed should be done, but I would instead recommend the version from their 10th anniversary show called Retrospect, because they had a full orcehstra and choir backing them up at that show. In fact, any time you can find a Retrospect version, you should generally prefer those.

"No one in the history of the world has ever gone to school for opera and ever thought they would be doing anything like this."
Well, at least ONE person did, and that's Epica's lead singer (Simone Simons)! She switched from pop/jazz singing lessons to opera, and she did it after hearing Tarja Turanen singing in an opera style on Nightwish's second album Oceanborn. Simone loved the combination of the two styles and decided that was what she wanted to do. Lucky for us, she succeeded!

Bands like Epica, and for example Apocalyptica (a finnish band playing metal using cellos, instead of electric guitars and bass), show how close metal and classical music are to eachother. Metal is more or less just classical music featuring Nikola Tesla.
If you want to hear something truly beautiful, Epica has performed together with above mentioned Apocalyptica ruclips.net/video/7imPLmvLyQA/видео.html
And this is perhaps my favorite example of how beautiful a metal song can be when you just use a harp

I don't know why Consign to Oblivion became the go-to Epica introduction song. I don't think it is all that good for it because the harsh vocals can discourage a lot of reactors from future songs. Don't get me wrong... I love it. But I don't think it is a good choice for the average reactor as the first song to hear from them.
They have some songs without harsh vocals, which I think might suit you more.

I can't stand the word "appreciated"... It's a backhanded way of saying, "I don't get it"... Much like 'bless your heart' down south means, "I can't stand you..."
And yes, this genre is a love-it-or-hate it affair... And I love it! This coming from a 'Peter' 😈
I'll give u the info on Epica: Formed in the Netherlands in 2002 by Mark Jansen (vocals & guitar) after he left the band After Forever (which started the career on one female vocalist Floor Jansen, currently of Nightwish)... He hired his then-GF Simone Simons (female operatic vocals) and Coen Janssen (keyboards)... Mark Jansen contributed the death metal vocals. They named the band Epica after an album by the band Kamelot (Simone Simons eventually married Kamelot's keyboard player Oliver Palotai, who has toured w/ Epica)... They signed initially w/ a Dutch label and debuted in 2003 w/ 'The Phantom Agony'... followed in 2005 by 'Consign to Oblivion' (yes, this title track!) ... A live recording "We will take you with us" was released before Epica signed a worldwide contract w/ Nuclear Blast Records in 2007.
'The divine conspiracy' (2007) marked Epica's first worldwide release (3rd studio album) and toured the world... Arien Van Weesenbeek (drums) joined that year, and Isaac Delahaye (lead guitar) joined in 2009 from the death metal band God Dethroned... 4th album 'Design your Universe' (2009) marked an evolution of Epica's sound and delivery and provided a huge boost to their career.
'Requiem for the indifferent' (2012) was their 5th album which charted in the US at #105 and made the charts all over the world... Rob Van der Loo (bass) joined in 2012 and that is the full Epica line-up today. Their 10th anniversary show in Eindhoven, Netherlands was filmed and recorded w/ a full classical orchestra and choir, released as the live CD 'The classical conspiracy' and as a live DVD 'Retrospect'.
6th album 'The Quantum Enigma' was released in 2014... it was followed up by the 7th Epica album 'The Holographic principle' in 2016
8th album 'Omega' was delayed by the covid-19 pandemic, but released in 2021... Epica did another live record 'Omega Alive' as a livestream event, and were back in tour by 2022.
Other Epica songs - 'Cry for the moon' ... 'Storm the sorrow' ... 'The obsessive devotion' ... 'Martyr of the free word' ... 'Universal death squad'... 🔥🤘🤘
