    Greetings from Utah Gals!🤘
Although Epica, Nightwish, and many other bands are categorized in the sub-genre "symphonic metal", each has a sound all their own. They combine the elements of symphonic metal (symphony, choir, low-tuned distorted (heavy) guitars, drums, and female vocals) in different ways and to varying degrees. Composers with all of these elements at their disposal have so much more flexibility than in some other genres of music.
I believe the composer behind most Epica songs is a guitarist, while most Nightwish songs are composed by the keyboardist. This difference is generally reflected in their sound, at least to my ear. Another example is Within Temptation. Their music is composed mainly by the lead singer and one of their guitarists. Therefore, vocals and guitars are generally a bit more prominent in their sound.
Another contributing factor is the makeup of the band. Epica has 2 guitarists. Along with the bassist, keyboardist, vocalist, and percussionist (guy on the drums), that comprises a fairly typical 6 piece band. Nightwish started out with only 5 pieces, with a single guitarist. They added a 6th piece, but that was a multi-instrumentalist and they still only have a single guitarist. All of this contributes to their sound.

EPICA is a Dutch symphonic metal, formed in 2002 by guitarist Mark Jansen, after parting ways with his former band After Forever. Mark had co-founded AF, which was the first band Floor joined at age 16.(mark and Floor are not related). Simone Simons is the lead singer, she was 17 in 2002. She switched to this style in training, from pop, after hearing Tarja with Nightwish. Coen Janssen on keyboards, Isaac Delahaye on guitar, Bassist Rob van der Loo, and drummer Arien van Weesenbeek complete the current lineup.
This performance was at the Retrospect 10th anniversary show in 2013. A 3 hour show with full orchestra and choir ,and Simone was about 3 months pregnant. Floor joined them for 1 other song here. A classical piece called Stabat Mater Dolorosa.
Yes Arien on drums kicks butt. Later in this show, Simone accused him of having batteries up his butt, because he has so much energy. 🤣
This is not typical of EPICA ,as Mark adds some harsh vocals to a lot of songs. 8 albums and several EP's to date, lots to dig into.
If you would like more from them, I suggest Consign to Oblivion or Beyond the Matrix, both live at the Zenith in Paris. The Skeleton Key or Kingdom of Heaven PT 3 from the Omega Alive virtual show. They have great ballads too. Rivers live in Chile was recently released.

Epica guitarist, Mark Jansen, was originally in the same group as Floor (no relation) called After Forever and singer Simone Simons was his girlfriend at the time so they have known each other for a long time now. Simone is now married to the keyboard player Oliver Palotai of USA symphonic metal band Kamelot. By coincidence, Epica took their name from the title of Kamelot's sixth album and Simone has sung with them on the track 'The Haunting (Somewhere in time)'. Simone was 3 months pregnant in this 10th anniversary one off concert and she performed throughout its 3+ hours duration.

In this same concert, Simone calls Floor in again for a duet in "Stabat Mater Delarosa". Simone (Simmons) sings the soprano part and Floor sings the alto because of her vocal range. They give the Epica metal band a break and only use the orchestra. A truly beautiful piece. The lyrics are quite old but the music has been composed by many over the years. They are using Pergolisi's composition. It is very popular in sacred music. The song is fairly short but the intro is a little long. Listen to the strings. You can almost feel Pergolisis's pain as he is composing his final piece. He knows he is dying (from tuberculosis) and is trying to finish before he passes at age 27. Enjoyinf your reactions and your journey. Greetings from the NW army Southwest Florida division.

Epica and Nightwish belong to different sub-genres of symphonic metal, distinguished by the kinds of metal and classical music they fuse. Hence the distinct sound you noted. That said, Floor's history spans both, as her first band, After Forever, was co-founded by the guy who later started Epica, so it was quite similar in style early on. Lots of history on that stage.

Welcome to Epica! It's only natural that people who discover Nightwish end up discovering this band too, they are at the top of the genre
This video is very popular due to Floor being featured, and it's a great song, but they are capable of upping the "epic notch" even further with long compositions. This show in particular was an special one celebrating the 10 years of the band, they brought the orchestra and choir and played 3 hours. And the vocalist Simone was even pregnant at the time.
Be ware though their sound is usually heavier than Nightwish's, which includes the harsh vocals/growls from the guitarist Mark Jansen in some songs, but they are included only to serve the song. They also have beautiful ballads to show off Simone beautiful voice.
I'll go ahead and suggest a follow up just in case: Unleashed, from the same show Retrospect 2013

Sancta Terra is a great song but actually not typical Epica sound. As a hardcore Epica fan, I would suggest these:

The obsesive devotion (faster and more energetic song)
    White waters (amazing ballad)
Beyond the matrix (I would say next stage of Epica's sound... more modern)
For me Epica was like second Nightwish. Their music si also very complex and dramatic. Simone Simons is awesome singer as well, Mark growls like a beast...

Epica is my favorite band right now, with Nightwish and Sabaton close behind. They have a wide variety of songs from ballads to absolute bangers. Most of their songs are harder than this, and the number one word that comes to mind about them is contrast. Mark, the guitarist that was speaking at the end does vocals as well on most songs and the contrast between his and Simone's voice is incredible. I saw them live for the first time last year and was blown away.
If you want to ease into their music you could start with Cry For The Moon. Consign To Oblivion, Design Your Universe, or Kingdom Of Heaven Part III are my favorites though.

I'm so happy that you had a terrific time with this incredible performance. I wouldn't say Sancta Terra was typical of Epica music - they are probably a bit harder than Nightwish and often (though not in this case) use a male vocalist who "growls" as a kind of Beauty and the Beast contrast.
This entire concert is a real treat though - the sound mixing, the lights, the full orchestra and both male and female choirs was a true celebration. Choir sounds are usually done as backing tracks and most of the orchestration is synthesised - but it is SUCH fun to see the conductor going absolutely ham as the guys in the front are throwing down and headbanging.

I see others have already clued you in to who Simone is, but just want to add that I think you two are adorable. In my journey to discovering this genre of music Epica was the 4th band I checked out, behind: Lacuna Coil (not really in the genre but female fronted and led me to discovering the others), Within Temptation and Nightwish. So many other European bands past and present that are really good European metal bands (most could be argued to be in the symphonic metal genre), Sirenia, Delain, The Gathering, Visions of Atlantis, Leaves' Eyes, After Forever, Blind Guardian, Kamelot, Stratovarius, Autumn, Nemesea, Benedictum, Theatre of Tragedy, Sonata Arctica, Hammerfall, Gamma Ray, Blackmore's Night, Darkwell, Magica, Manowar, Sengir, the list is almost endless. Two of the latest I have discovered are Imperial Age and All for Metal, and the cool thing about all these bands is you can tell that they have in some part been influenced by great metal bands of the past like Black Sabbath, Blue Oyster Cult, Iron Maiden and others.

Hi Sisters. I think the word you were looking for to distinguish between Simone's and Floor's voices is that Floor's tone is more "mellow". Even so, together they are formidable and their harmonies incredible. They are friends who, I believe, studied music at the same academy with both classically trained! Simone was three months pregnant when they did this gig. As usual, great reactions and feedback you two. Best wishes and stay safe.

Nightwish are both symphonic metal bands and have a female main vocalist. But where Nightwish songs are themed around science and evolution, Epica is focussed on spiritual and faith themes. Also Epica is usually a little harder and harsher. Both are amazing for what they are.

    • @s1mperadicator13
      @s1mperadicator13 Год назад +1

lmao. EPICA have always been writing those science stuff way before NW (who only started getting to these themes around 2015). Get your facts straight. EPICA have delved into that since 2009. Also, EPICA talks about real issues, unlike other symphonic and power metal bands out there.

For another gorgeous metal band on stage with classical team moment check Dimmu Borgir: Gateways with Norwegian public broadcasting company orchestra and choir.
Just do note it's symphonic *black* metal, not symphonic folk metal like Nightwish, so it's a bit heavier when it comes to vocals.
But gorgeous. Dimmu Borgir, like Tuomas, really know how to compose to both orchestra and metal band at the same time.

Arjen the creator of Star one and Ayreon uses multiple artists in his group from musicians and singers. And intruduced me to many great artists Like Epica and Nightwish and Kamelot etc. All are concept or story albums like a stage production. Thank you ladies.

Sooo nice and amazing to see you reacting to this ... seems most people falling into the Nightwish-Rabithole also stumble into this cave, too! And that's very good as the Epicians just march shoulder to shoulder with the Nightwish army ... :D
If you happen to go on with some Epica songs at some time, you may notice they go way harder with their rhythms and also the singing. Simone Simons has the light, theatrical and classical parts of course and Mark Jansen - you heared him quickly in the end - does a lot of very harsh vocals/growlings which mixes greaaaaat together with Simone. By the way "Mark Jansen" isn't related to Floor Jansen, BUT was also with her in her band "After Forever" many years ago. So you see... there are some roots together with those bands while they aren't really "competing".
Like with Nightwish, Epica will also be worth have a glance at the lyrics as they are often covering very philosophical and serious topics.
You may get comments to react to the song "Consign to Oblivion" - best way to go with the "live at Zenith Paris" recording, as this has a great sound quality and perfect vibes - but be warned - thats a really really hard song xD. Other ways to go on could be "Kingdom of Heaven Part 3 omega alive" or "The Skeleton Key" (official video or also "omega alive").
By the way: They are not always having a full orchestra plus choir on stage - this was special for the "Retrospect" - a 10 years aniversary concert. Aside from this concert they use prerecorded choir/orchestral elements similar to how Nightwish does it, but with a lot more focus on the choir and a deeper orchestral/symphonic experience mixed in. So checking for "Unleashed" or "Design your Universe" from this show can also be a nice go without going for the very hard parts already :D

Welcome to the glorious world of Epica! They are Nightwish's darker, heavier cousin. Female lead singer is Simone Simmons . Like Nightwish they have epic journey songs like Kingdom of Heaven Part 3 (their magnus opus IMO) from the Omega Live show. They have gorgeous ballads that really showcases SImone's voice like Tides of Time, Once Upon a Nightmare (Omega Alive) or Rivers (any version although my current favorite is live from Chile from their current tour that they just dropped, ruclips.net/video/qcLGgfyOmZE/видео.html). They also have some beautiful acoustic versions of their music like Omegacoustic, ruclips.net/video/tVERKQeQSRY/видео.html. They are currently touring in Europe with Apocalyptica (Finnish Band playing metal on cellos). They dropped a collab with Simone just before the start of the tour, Rise Again, that is absolutely gorgeous, ruclips.net/video/cEgsUUhqdlg/видео.html. Another recent collab that I love is Sirens- of Blood and Water with Charolette Wessels (ex Delain) and Myrkur. Based on the original Little Mermaid story by Hans C. Andersen. Again so beautiful. ruclips.net/video/svGQ-q9gx68/видео.html.

I don't understand why in every reaction they only talk about how well the girls do and forget the rest of the members? Epica is a band, it's not just Simone... the work that the rest of the band do is overwhelming... especially that drummer...
