Epica are generally heavier than Nightwish, fusing symphonic music with elements of Thrash, Death Metal and Industrial Metal. Floor became known to Marko when they both guested with another Dutch band you should investigate - DELAIN. And you can hear Floor, her sister Irene and Simone (and others) on "Valley Of The Queens" by Dutch Progressive Metal collective AYREON. They've done several albums with them.
Just a few bits from me to give you a better picture :) Floor Jansen and Simone Simons are both Dutch and have been close personal friends for many years - I guess it radiates from them all through the stage, too. This has been filmed at Epica's Retrospect show where they celebrated their 10th anniversary, IIRC. Normally, they play just like Nightwish do, with pre-recorded orchestral backing tracks. This time, it was a one-off show where they hauled the whole live orchestra & choir with them. Nightwish have also been considering to get the orchestra live, but there were two reasons not to, so far: as Tuomas himself said a few years ago - everybody is doing it nowadays and they never wanted to do what everybody does (or something along these lines). Indeed, quite many bands who cooperate with an orchestra, take the orchestra onstage for (some) live shows, too, so it already wouldn't be anything shocking, unheard of or even extraordinary. The second, more important reason is this -- Nightwish is a concert-heavy band, doing tours all around the globe that last for many months (often more than a year) continuously, without any longer break. Also, what their music needs is a full "big" orchestra with many various instruments, and several choirs. It would be a logistical nightmare to haul all these, possibly a few hundred, musicians around the globe for all these months on a tour, and arrange everything for them, too. Not to mention that the costs of such a "fun" would be astronomical. Simply put, it is pretty unimaginable to organize. However, it still may happen in the future - Tuomas said he would be willing to take live orchestra onstage with them, but only as a one-off and only in Wembley Arena (which they already sold out several times). So, maybe, we'll get to see it once :)

@@ChrisPage68 actually they met each other before ... in 2003 Floor was with After Forever on Tour together with Nightwish ("Bless the Child" -Tour) saw them live in Dortmund Westfalenhalle2 and later on the Méra Luna Open Air .... greetings from Germany
*Isn't it funny, you always hear "competition is good, to keep everybody on the highest possible level"....but here we are watching & listening how friendship & collaboration producing something that beautiful. I know this video since January 2019 and the chorus is still able to blast me into a paradise-like dimension.*
As a note. Simone and Floor were once flatmates long ago when Floor was in After Forever and attending the Rockacademie. They even had some RUclips vids up set in their little place where they chatted about music cooking boys. And did some singing acapella and played their piano Theyve stayed friends even now. Elyze Ryd of Amaranthe mentioned Floor and Simone and their kids meeting again and having fun in 2019.
This is what Richard Wagner would have produced given access to electricity and supplied with Floor and Simone. They have been longtime friends, Mark Jansen (no relation) who is the guitar player and composer was with Floor in her band After Forever. Epica is a tremendous band in their own right. Chasing the Dragon from this Restrospect show will blow your mind.
welcome to the top of the heap...Epica is very epic, indeed, along with Rhapsody of fire, Symphony X, Galneryus, Therion and Xandria, just to name a few
Christi, here is to me the word that best defines Symphonic Metal (well...Metal in general) : it’s MUSICIANSHIP. And the hard work behind this word. Also, if you want new goosebumps by Floor & Simone : Stabat Mater Dolorosa 😉 ! Loves from France !
Yes the LIVE version with the symphony as well will just blow her away as well. Now all she needs is to experience Charlotte with Delain perhaps LIVE doing the gathering with Marco (Nightwish) ( ruclips.net/video/4X4jNBrFEn0/видео.html) and Dianne of Ex Libris.
Simone and Floor are long time friends and are amazing together, really liked your reaction. Floor is now touring through the Netherlands and many video's of that already surfaced on youtube, she sang for instand Phantom of the Opera with Henk Poort, also Sweet Curse with him, she also sang Strong and the Nightwish song Our Decades in the Sun, so please check them out, really amazing
Never thought I'd hear either "Strong" or "Our Decades In the Sun." Quite the treat. Seeing Floor do "Strong" with her Mom & Dad in the crowd and her sister Irene participating in the show... So moving.
You got around to it, great. Some info on the venue, this was performed in Eindhoven 2014, though it was released in 2015. The orchestra and choir were flown in from Slovakia for a week. Only three concerts were given, one was streamed live. And each of them were three hours in duration. This was a one off, celebration of Epica's fifteen years as a band. Oh and yes, I had the pleasure of being in the audience, after all, it's my hometown. 🙂
Small correction: the orchestra is from Hungary and this was the 10 year anniversary for Epica. No offense 😊 and greetings from a fellow 'Eindhovenaar' who also attended this concert. It's still the best show I have ever seen. Let's see if Nightwish can top this in November! 😉
@@The-WorldExplained I was wondering about that, when I was backstage I heard various languages from both the choir and orchestra. When I asked a friend there were conflicting answers. Meh, at least now it makes sense 😃 Oh, born in Gestel, grew up in Woensel, moved to the centre, now on the border of Nuenen
Floor owns everything she does she makes it her own, Simone is amazing has well. The chemistry between the two of them is amazing, you can tell they genuinely like and respect one another.

Christi, the Netherlands is blessed with some of the greatest female vocal lead singers and bands: - Anneke van Giersbergen: grand lady of Dutch metal and inspiration of Floor. Singer of The Gathering until 2007, now on a solo career. - Floor Jansen well known: After Forever, Revamp, Nightwish and a project called Nortward with Jørn Viggo Lofstad of Pagan's Mind. - Simone Simons: Epica and MaYan. - Sharon den Adel: Within Tempatation, Sharon is a singing autodidact and designs her own stage-outfit. - Charlotte Wessels: Delain - Diana van Giersbergen: Ex Libris and Xandria. Not related to Anneke. Sharon and Anneke sing together the "Best Duet"on YT called Somewhere. Highly recommended Simone and Floor also did on the same Retrospect Stabat Matar Dolorosa a 12th century hymn on music of 17th century composer Pergolosi. (one of many composer for this hymn (21+)).
You talked about the live orchestra. While it sounds amazing, it is a logistical nightmare to pull off with any regularity, not to mention incredibly expensive. The concert that this was taken from was celebrating Epica's 10th anniversary, and the live orchestra was a one time only thing. Epica, like Nightwish, usually uses prerecorded symphonic and choir elements in their live shows. It is quite grand to have them all live in this show though.
It is seriously amazing to watch a great vocal teacher listen to music and bands i would never think people would give the light of day and thoroughly enjoy it and see the vasts amount of talent this genre has to offer.
LOOOOVE your happiness seeing this hahahaha This girls make me cry with their voices, its amazing, and they love each other, its really great, in metal, frontwoman are all an unity: Simone Simmons, Floor Jansen, Tarja Turunem, Cristina Scabbia, Anneke van Giersbergen, Sharon den Adel ... and so many more, its really beautiful when they get together and make music. You should check them all out. Kisses!
I always imagine a meeting to discuss how they would perform this. And every suggestion to do someone came up was agreed upon. There's little you can think of to add to this.
For more female fronted Symphonic Metal bands try Within Temptation, Lacuna Coil, and Delain. Also you could try Tarja's (original Nightwish singer) solo stuff. I'm not keen on it myself, but the lady can still sing.
HI Christi. The song and performance rocked. They do another duet in the same show same style. In that one Floor sings alto Simone sings soprano. A guy from After Forever named Mark Jansen no relation started Epica. I love your enjoyment.gFloor and Tarja are friends also.
Love that you reacted to this. Floor and Simone are goods friends and have done other work together. Epica is the second most popular Symphonic Metal band just behind Nightwish. Explore more of Epica and you’ll love what you hear. Mark (rhythm guitar) is the mastermind and scores there music and Simone writes the lyrics. Mark and Floor used to be in a band together when they were younger. The Dutch talent is just amazing.
Jack Storm Your point is well taken and if you’re a huge fan of Within Temptation then they may be the most popular and Epica the least. It’s all an opinion and not based on scientific facts. I like Epica and consider them along with Nightwish as my favorite Symphonic bands. Within Temptation, Delain, Xandria are also fabulous groups that I enjoy.
Laughing Man I’m sure that’s true although I remember her being interviewed where she stated she would write the lyrics after the basic melody was composed. Maybe she was only referring to certain songs in the interview.
@@randywhite1724 I like them all as well. I was just going off of commercial success. Of course WT & NW have an advantage having been around longer. Have you listened to Ex Libris? Dianne's band after leaving Xandria.
The nicest thing about the reactions - you feel reminded of how you felt when you heard it for the first time. The excitement when you enter a new world.
This was phenomenal performance, Simone and Floor are both amazing singers, but I think that live symphonic metal performance with choir and orchestra present is just something special.
Btw the Dutch metal maidens as they are known are generally considered to be Anneke van Giersbergen, Sharon den Adel, Floor Jansen, Simone Simons, Charlotte Wessels, & Dianne van Giersbergen. I think you might like Dianne in particular though all of them are great.
Im so pleased that you have this symphonic interest. all these comments are proof you have crested this warm fabulous community of intelligent passionate and loving people . And yep...we are metal. Epica is worthy of your interest and wont disappoint. "We Will Take You With Us" is recorded in a studio with live chorals and many strings. You will be amazed. Symphonic metal at its absolute very best. You will LOVE it
Mark used to be with Floor in the band "after forever" then left to form Epica. He always wanted to fuse classical/gospel choruses/opera choruses/metal and the result was Epica
Awesome reaction, thank you 😊 Great song and performance by Epica. Floor and Simon have other duets on RUclips. I like you have only discovered this genre through Nightwish. Can’t believe I had never heard it before! If I had heard this as a teenager it would have changed my life. There is a rich pool of amazing artists in this genre. Truely great stuff, I’m loving it!
And it all started with a very noisy Austrian band called Celtic Frost. When they placed these parts with opera, their followers hated it. Celti Frost inspired another band, called Therion. I love Nightwish, but Therion is a great reference for symphonic metal. Other two relevant and pioneering bands with two vocals (beauty and the beast style) were Theater of Tragedy and The Gathering.
Geuselio Hulk hey thanks. I did listen to some Celtic Frost many years ago. I have heard a lot about the Gathering am looking forward to hearing them 😃👍🏻
Chasing The Dragon from this same show is another masterpiece worth checking out! Also, you mentioned the use of recorded tracks, Epica does it as well usually. This was a special show celebrating the band's 10th anniversary so they went all in with an orchestra and choir on stage.
The thing i love about these bands is that they put everything into the music. There is no self indulgent rock en roll life style. Ever penny they make goes into making more music. Nightwish for instance are rumored to have spent €1,000,000 of their own money on their 2004 album Once which included videos etc, at a time when they were not that big. You see the same thing here with Epica. I would bet that some of the band got a bus home after the shows or being Dutch cycled a bicycle home.
Hi Christie, the orchestral score was written and arranged by Epica keyboard player Coen Janssen together with Simone's husband Oliver Palotai, Oliver is the keyboard player for symphonic rock band Kamelot
Best reaction for this video that I have seen. She points out some many things that I had missed. Never noticed the scores held by the singers until now.
just a small notice, simone did indeed start when she was 17 and started perforfing back then. however, the same goes for floor. floor was also 17 when she joined after forever
Actually, according to Wikipedia, Floor was SIXTEEN when she joined After Forever. I remember listening to After Forever back in the day, and they were...okay. This was before Floor got four years of conservatory training. But it is interesting how the two singers had similar career arcs, being recruited very early and enjoying success from a very young age. And yet both seem like down to earth people without ego. It's amazing. Something in Dutch culture? I don't know.
Your reaction, especially in the 5:20 - 5:35 time stamp brought me tears! The pure joy and awe! Thank you once again for a BEAUTIFUL reaction. I really wish we could see you one day being on that stage with Floor, I think that by now you would have loved it, even if it's metal!
The trio of Floor, Anneke van Giersbergen and Marcela Bovio (a magnificent soprano from Mexico now living in the Netherlands, who sings in another band Mark Jansen founded called, "MaYan") sing, "Valley of the Queens" by Ayreon, another incredible Dutch band. You might really love that one as well. Short but heavenly.
"They could have done more of that, that was amazing.." That´s the feeling I mainly have with Floor doing smtg.. No matter how much I listen to it or how much she does something, it´s always a bit too little. It´s such a joy and delight, you could have it eternally. - Or, to be excact: Always just a little bit more. It gives you all and still leaves you wanting just a bit more. That, I think, tells something crucial about it. And yes, Epica: Wow. Never listened to them before like this: all focused into. Have to have a bit more of that, too. Music is a wonderful thing. And something that has kept my sanity during this crazy only stay at home -time. You just have to put it playing and there´s a reason. Thank you for being who you are, giving your share of light to us. ❤ (Okay, melodramatic and all - but who wouldnt be in an emotional state, after listening to that)
Christi you are my favorite reactor 💕 Epica is one of my 2 favorites bands ever! Floor is my favorite singer sooooo... this reaction video is LIFE to me
Mark Jansen(not related to Floor)is the mastermind behind epica. You probably would like some more epica stuff (the live studio videos from the we "will take you with us" DVD are awesome). Besides that you probably would like Ave Maria (Floor and Marco singing) and Dead boy's poem live Buenos Aires (from Nightwish)
Nice reaction to this video with a technical approach that I was looking for as well as your sincere and interesting facial expressions. :) Kudos to you. I have been following Epica for about 5 or 6 years and this 10th anniversary concert (Retrospect) was a game changer/revolutionary performance in terms of rock/metal music, if not music in general. This all started with "Therion", a very succesful and a pioneering symphonic metal band from Sweden. Their performance, which is called " The Miskolc Experience " recorded in 2007 at " Miskolc International Opera Festival " with the orchestra and choir you see in this video led the way for symphonic metal bands to perform with symphonic/philarmonic orchestras. The same year Within Temptation performed with "Metropole Orchestra" and released the album "Black Symphony". In 2008 Epica also performed in "Miskolc International Opera Festival" and released an album called "The Classical Conspiracy". These are the 4 big symphonic metal performances with full orchestras and choires ever recorded. Out of this 4 marvelous performances, Retrospect stands out the most. The reason for this is that not just the performance but the chemistry between the band and the orchestra and the choir. First off, there was definitely a mutual respect between the orchestra and the band for their art. The members of the orchestra and the choir seemed that they genuinely liked the songs and style of Epica. Secondly, from the conductor to oboists and the choir, it was definitely apparent that everyone was immensely enjoying every minute of it. When you watch the whole 3 hour performance, you can see many members of the orchestra and the choir were acting like giddy little children on Christmas. At times, they try to mimick the headbanging of the band by swinging back and forth and at other times some members of the orchestra, were keeping tempo with the music with subtle or apparent head gestures when they were not playing a part. When we look at the performance, I think this is also the most versatile musical experience that one can have due to various well known pieces from different genres performed in the show, from famous classical pieces to famous movie scores. Long story short, this is an otherworldly experience as it hadn't been done before. A must see performance. For my suggestions from Retrospect concert, you can react to "Chasing the Dragon", "Stabat Mater Dolorosa" ft. Floor Jansen again and definitely "Consign to Oblivion", which is the final act of the show. Sorry I digressed and wrote a whole bunch of stuff but there are thousands of details that need to be explored as they are very exciting. I wish you success in what you are doing...
ummm all I can say is WOW I love Floor Jansen and I've heard of Epica they compare Floor to Epica's front singer all the time seeing them together hearing them seeing the paired hair windmills the orchestra singers all of it I'm just speechless great reaction thank you
Excellent reaction one of the best I’ve ever seen. Breaking down the parts w samples is so rarely seen ... well done . As to the mastermind I’d lean toward the guitarist who formed Epica whom also started After Forever with Floor. He left the band after the second release to form Epica ... undoubtedly starting a rivalry that some have forgotten since it seems here .... years later... Floor appears to be so welcomed. Once Floor joined Nightwish it seems the rivalry has restarted
I’d suggest to check out Unleashed by Them it has all the elements of this song that you like ... long lines and orchestral hits and choir it’s beautiful and heavy
Special guest Simone Simons from Epica joins Revamp onstage to duet with Floor Jansen on 'Sweet Curse.' Recorded at the Metal Female Voices festival, Wieze, Belgium on 23 October, 2010
And once again thank you for your reaction Christi - you have again chosen a very nice piece to make a video about it. A lot of energy on stage and two incredible voices. Welcome to the Dutch wonderland, the land of beautiful voices - there are so many of them here that I always wondered if they put something special in their food for their children. But Floor and Simone also harmonize extremely well together - both are incredibly talented singers, excellently trained and with a very beautiful stage presence. But the concert was also something very special, with a large choir and orchestra - it should be understandable that such a production is not commonplace. That's why you should always enjoy it when something like this takes place - you can live off it for a very long time and enjoy the memories.
And these ladies are just two of our vocal Metal-Queens please check out the rest. If you keep following these bands you'll get there !!!! greetings from the Netherlands !
No battle or confrontation, but pure collaboration, so rare that neither is trying to 'win'. The result is awesome. And if you haven't heard these two sing 'Stabat Mater Dolorosa' then you are incomplete! Fine review by the way
To get the full effect of Epica Cosign to Oblivion is a must watch. It's the song the close with all the time. As for the Mastermind Mark Jansen is the one that started the band after he was kicked from After Forever. Epica like After Forever was a symphonic metal band.
Great reaction as usual. I was there and witnessed this fantastic performance. It was actually a concert for their 10th anniversary and lasted 3 hours! Floor did another song with Simone. You should check it out: Stabat Mater! Love from the Netherlands!
A truly fantastic performance of a musical masterpiece. Simone and Floor are so clearly having a blast, they are giving the vibe of two gorgeous women in a club, owning the dance floor, seducing everyone.
Simone Simons switched from pop-singing to classical lessons because of Nightwish' Oceanborn album and later joined Mark Jansen's band Epica. Mark Jansen is not related to Floor, but they worked together in their band After Forever for 7 years and know each other well. Simone knows Floor well Simone was Mark's girlfriend when he left After Forever. btw. Floor has stated in intervviews that she realised what direction she wanted during a concert of the Gathering with Anneke van Gierstbergen. Anneke truly is the godmother of the Dutch symphonic metal ladies. You can see Floor and Anneke (and Marcela Bovio) perform together on stage in Ayeron's song Valley of the Queens ruclips.net/video/TbebO5BZi-I/видео.html if you want you can also watch Anneke with Sharon van Adel perform the gorgeous duet Somewhere ruclips.net/video/IR_mBh5mqok/видео.html
YES! I love your reactions on symphonic metal so much, and you always make me discover new things and new points of view on songs and artists that I've listened to thousands of time! Now, after Sancta Terra (btw Mark Jansen, the guitarist and growler of the band, is the mastermind behind Epica), I really REALLY think that you should listen to Within Temptation, they are the MASTERS of big symphonic metal played with an orchestra and they've done two HUGE concerts, Black Symphony and Elements, that are now milestones in live symphonic metal. Somebody in the comments already said that you should watch the beautiful duet from Black Symphony called "Somewehere", but also other two ballads from that same concert, "The Swan Song" and "Forgiven", and, for a more heavy symphonic song, "The Promise", also from "Black Symphony". From the concert "Elements" I think you should watch the song "Candles", so with that you'll be introduced to another common trope in symphonic metal, 'the beauty and the beast': harsh vocals by a male singer and soft, angelic tones by the female singer, in this case the amazing Sharon den Adel, another dutch sensation along with Floor and Simone. I KNOW you will love it, it's impossible to not get goosebumps with Within Temptation! Sorry for the long request but, seriously, I love your reactions so much and seeing you fall in love with and also give credit to this amazing and underrated musicians that are so important to me and so many other people really fills me with joy!
Another reaction of yours to love :) ... this song is E-P-I-C and so is the band/orchestra and of course Simone and Floor, flawless. If you want to dig more into Simone you should listen "Tides of Time"...you're gonna be blown away by it.
To hear more of these two being amazing together, I would suggest Stabat Mater Dolorosa. It's also more of a duet, as you said you would have liked to hear more harmony. 🙂
The orchestra is not a regular occurence, this was a special occasion for the 10th anniversary of Epica, they usually have a backing track like Nightwish. Also if you loved their harmonies together, please react to Within Temptation feat. Anneke Van Giersbergen - Somewhere (Live).
If you decide to listen to more Epica, something you'll find more of with them (vs. Nightwish for example), is more of the "Beauty and the Beast" vocal style, where Mark (the guitarist) and Simone will often trade back and forth between harsh metal growling and soaring soprano lines. I'm not generally a huge fan of harsh growling, but in the context of Symphonic Metal it works very well. It provides a "tension and release" throughout the music that is often inherent in classical style music to begin with. It keeps the song from being stale or monotonic and has taught me to appreciate that particular vocal style much more than I used to.
Aside from the incredible musicianship, I just love how much fun everyone on stage is having and how much they enjoy performing together! This spirit of collaboration in the metal community has never gotten a lot of press, but I think it's one of the main reasons people are so passionate about this music.
This was a request for a long time, I'm really glad you finally get to it, these are lady Titans 😁 this performance is just perfect, it was for celebration of Epica's 10 anniversary. If you're interested for checking out of their more classical singing react to Sabat Mater Dolorosa, the live versione, I am sure that will be so awesome and useful for your company and voice lovers. Thank you so much 🖤🤘🖤🤘
Christi, seeing that you like this so much please do a reaction on Valley of the Queens from Ayrean, featuring Floor, Anneke and Marcella. Such a beautiful little piece with great unisons. And Stabat Mater Dolorosa from Simone and Floor is another great example of their beautiful voices.
Christi discovers Epica! Woohoo! You're gonna love 'em. The dazzling lights can be a little jarring on a video screen, but this show... took a year to organize, was very well executed, and every song from it is a gem. Suggesting you explore it further, especially Unleashed, Design Your Universe and Chasing The Dragon, but every song of the 3-hour show is a keeper, despite 'Schmoon' being a few months pregnant with her first, and a little breathless by her standards. I mean it couldn't have made her job easier, I'm sure of that. Also, please check her guest vocals with Kamelot on The Haunting, very early in her career. Love that you love this genre, and there's many a tasty morsel awaiting you, lass. Well done!
I'm glad that you mentioned the "mastermind" behind Epica. Most people think it is only Mark Jansen ( lead guitars and growls) as he was the founder of the band, but the actual orchestra and choir arrangements are done by Coen the keyboard guy. What I really love about Epica is that everybody contributes to the creation process and that is why they always come up with fresh, and complex new pieces. The orchestra and choir in the studio versions are also recorded with actual musicians, they are not sampled. Epica is just out of this world. You should dig into them. I recommend Design your Universe live Retrospect.
Hi there, amazing reaction as always 💕 Epica is a great band and they (Floor and Simone are very good friends) I love the synchronized windmills lol so badass, is like a Valkyrie and an Angel singing together, can you react to Cry For The Moon? Also by Epica, the acoustic version, it's another masterpiece featuring the lovely Simone and Mark this time (one of the guitarist and the growler you hear at the end, talking to the people)
Epica with Simone used to be one of those bands you need to hear all the time. From very early in the mornings to late hours at night. Working, studying and also sleeping
There are so many fantastic Dutch leading ladies! Another fantastic duet is 'Somewhere' by Within Temptation, Black Symphony feat. Anneke is beautiful. Sharon Den Adel is the lead singer, has a beautiful voice and is self taught. Please check this one. Also, Delain who's lead singer Charlotte Weasels is fantastic. They've also dine loads of duets with Nightwish's very own Marko 😁. Symphonic metal is awesome, epic, theatrical and the musicianship is the best I've ever come across.
Somebody has probably mentioned 'Stabat Mater Dolorosa feat Floor Jansen' live at the same concert. It is mostly just a duet and orchestra, and you will like it :)
The mastermind behind Epica is Mark Jansen. No, he is not related to Floor, but they were together many years ago in the band After Forever. They had a disagreement about which direction the band should take and Floor stayed with After Forever and Mark left and founded Epica. Also, Epica's name comes from Kamelot's album Epica, another great symphonic metal band but with a male vocalist this time.
The orchestra and choir were on the stage because it's an anniversary concert of course, they don't have that every show. Just to make sure it's clear. :-)
Now this is an epic duet! It has to been extreme difficult to arrange. Great unisono and I think they switched their roles somewhere there.Great analysis, like always!
Now that you've dived deeper into the waters of symphonic metal, I'd really like for you to react to Floors old band After Forever. It would be fun for you to see what she sounded like in her early 20s and how much she evolved vocally. I'd recommend Monolith Of Doubt 2002 live.
I've just started discovering Epica. Simone is among the top 3 vocalists I've ever heard. I can't believe bands like this exist with such high level musicians but I've not heard them. This is why channels like this are important. Sharing music is the only way to get above the pop/commercial dredge.
Hi, great reaction to an even greater song. I think you should also react to Epica Stabat Mater Dolorosa ft. Floor. That one made me cry...so beautifull
Loved your reaction, as always. Good to see you noticing the choir's noted down music as well. One thing though- the twirly things are called windmills, but the rest of them were headbanging (the technical term) in sync. Floor was windmilling (subtype of headbanging).😁 metalhead technicalities lol😂
The mastermind behind Epica is Mark Jansen, the founder of Epica, is the guitarist that at the end of the song says: "Floor Janseeeeeeen" to the public. He mainly writes the songs of Epica, like Tuomas in Nightwish. Before you get excited, nop, Mark and Floor are not related. They are just friends from long time ago, in fact, Mark and Floor were together in Floor's 1st band, After Forever, but Mark left and found Epica, that's how they know each other. Back in the day, Mark and Simone (Epica's singer) were a couple, and that's how Floor and Simone get to know each other and became great friends since then, it's been like 20 years... Cheers
Truly awesome song - thank, you for your reaction! Have you come across Floor's performance from Muziekcafe yet, particularly her version of the song Nemo? Think it's only a couple of weeks old and none of the reactors I like have touched it yet.....
Yes! Another great reaction and breakdown! Floor and Simone are both Dutch gems in the metal world, and still underrated imho. 😉 I don't know what's in our water but a lot of top metal vocalists are from the Netherlands. (I must have a wrong batch, though.) I hope you get a lot of requests to introduce you more into this genre. I'd love it if you checked out Devin Townsend, did you react to his performance of Kingdom? Live at EMG, preferably. If not: definitely put it on your To Do list. I'll think of some more later, lol.
Welcome to Epica The music of Epica is heavy yet catchy and includes Goth, Death and Prog metal elements. This one is from their 10th anniversary concert, one of the most ambitious and complex shows in Metal history. Any song from this concert is a gem. Please try - Epica - Chasing the Dragon Epica - Design Your Universe
The phantom agony, the kingdom of heaven are great songs of épica, Stabat material dolorosa is beatiful song to react Thanks for your reactions Christi!!

Floor Jansen and Simone Simons are both Dutch and have been close personal friends for many years - I guess it radiates from them all through the stage, too.

Simone was 3 months pregnant when they did this show and she still nailed it.
3 months pregnant & 3 hours of performing too. Floor sung 2 song's that night.
And pregnant Floor here :) ruclips.net/video/ym1Wc5dmUYc/видео.html

They can't compete because they are top level.
Co-op is much better! Check any work from Arjen Lucassen, specially the Ayreon live shows!
Separately they're both stunning. Together they're pure magic.
I can see Simone and Floor talking about cooking boys.
@@alanfoster6589 lol sorry about punctuation
Cool info. Thanks for sharing :)
Cool! 😍
robert shimek Are those RUclips videos still around to watch?
This is what Richard Wagner would have produced given access to electricity and supplied with Floor and Simone. They have been longtime friends, Mark Jansen (no relation) who is the guitar player and composer was with Floor in her band After Forever. Epica is a tremendous band in their own right. Chasing the Dragon from this Restrospect show will blow your mind.
Hail!
My favourite track is Chasing the Dragon, and the live performance at the Retrospective concert is just incredible.
Yes, Chasing the Dragon, please!
I had no idea of the whole genre before I was 'exposed' to Floor through your channel last year. This is fantastic. I feel enriched.
@Swords Chant I know! I have a lotta' catching up to do! :) Better late than never, though! :)
welcome to the top of the heap...Epica is very epic, indeed, along with Rhapsody of fire, Symphony X, Galneryus, Therion and Xandria, just to name a few
you must hear the great soprano Tarja Turunen, original vocalist and co-founder of Nightwish
Like Floor, Simone and Tarya together harmonizing that would be lethal to the heart 😊
Within temptation black symphony - somewhere ft. Anneke van Giersbergen
Another highly recommened duet.
Agreed. A really interesting and amazing duet
That completes the other pair of Dutch metal godesses
Yeeeees please!
@@ghostnf9650 There's more than that - you forgot Charlotte Wessels and Dianne Van Giersbergen.
okay! now ''stabat mater dolorosa'' from the same concert.
Very classical from thrlate middleages pergolesi but beautiful. I like it very muxh too.
YES!!
I agree, would also like to see a reaction to that
I think that is from XIII century...
Noo the full show !! :-)
Yah,Sweet Curse with Henk was EPIC omg
Nimwey I think she liked it. I'll ask again to be sure. 😁
Meh, at least now it makes sense 😃

for the singers it seams so effortless, almost like they are holding back in that they could take you to the next level if the music called for it.
Christi, the Netherlands is blessed with some of the greatest female vocal lead singers and bands:
- Anneke van Giersbergen: grand lady of Dutch metal and inspiration of Floor.
- Charlotte Wessels: Delain
- Diana van Giersbergen: Ex Libris and Xandria. Not related to Anneke.
Sharon and Anneke sing together the "Best Duet"on YT called Somewhere. Highly recommended
Simone and Floor also did on the same Retrospect Stabat Matar Dolorosa a 12th century hymn on music of 17th century composer Pergolosi. (one of many composer for this hymn (21+)).
Listte van der Berg also....and mastermind Arjen Lucassen
@@palmanbracht9125 ofcourse :-)
You forgot the Anneke collaborations with Devin Townsend Project
I have to second the mention of Diana van Gierbergen...on a level with both of these singers IMO. Very smart and well-spoken too.
I think there are 3 sound engineers. One for the orchestra, another for the chorus and other for the band.
@@tigersharkot That would not surprise me by the way it sounds.
The chorus of this performance gives me global chills.
wait till you hear their kingdom of heaven
For more female fronted Symphonic Metal bands try Within Temptation, Lacuna Coil, and Delain. Also you could try Tarja's (original Nightwish singer) solo stuff. I'm not keen on it myself, but the lady can still sing.
HI Christi. The song and performance rocked. They do another duet in the same show same style. In that one Floor sings alto Simone sings soprano. A guy from After Forever named Mark Jansen no relation started Epica. I love your enjoyment.gFloor and Tarja are friends also.
I've neglected to say many times while enjoying your reactions, you are one of the MOST well informed and prepared that I have seen ! thank you
Love that you reacted to this.
Whether or not Epica is the second most popular Symphonic Metal band is debatable depending on if you are considering Within Temptation as Symphonic.
Simone writes some lyrics, not all of it though
Laughing Man I’m sure that’s true although I remember her being interviewed where she stated she would write the lyrics after the basic melody was composed. Maybe she was only referring to certain songs in the interview.
@@randywhite1724 I like them all as well. I was just going off of commercial success. Of course WT & NW have an advantage having been around longer. Have you listened to Ex Libris? Dianne's band after leaving Xandria.
2022-09-03 written in concrete in my mind. I i'm going to a Epica concert. Can't wait.
So glad you liked it!! You're going to love symphonic metal!!
Awesome reaction, thank you 😊
Great song and performance by Epica.
Just a flawless performance, really. 10/10
Two of (several) amazing Dutch female metal singers
Epica et Floor Jansen "Mater Dolorosa " very beautiful
Just the fact that this 2 bands can do all live is like. Mouth dropping .
(Okay, melodramatic and all - but who wouldnt be in an emotional state, after listening to that)
Christi you are my favorite reactor 💕 Epica is one of my 2 favorites bands ever!
I wish you success in what you are doing...
ummm all I can say is WOW I love Floor Jansen and I've heard of Epica they compare Floor to Epica's front singer all the time seeing them together hearing them seeing the paired hair windmills the orchestra singers all of it I'm just speechless great reaction thank you
Metal bands with symphonic orchestras make a perfect musical wedding!
Epica like After Forever was a symphonic metal band.
the choir looked like they were having a blast
amazing

Chasing the Dragon- same concert for sure!!!
I like your comments coach, respect from Indonesia
Now you need to do Kamelot - The Haunting, featuring Simone Simons. The 2006 live at Norway would be my recommendation.
Yeah! You finally found it.
Yes! More Epica please
unleashed
Now that you've dived deeper into the waters of symphonic metal, I'd really like for you to react to Floors old band After Forever. It would be fun for you to see what she sounded like in her early 20s and how much she evolved vocally. I'd recommend Monolith Of Doubt 2002 live.
And their version of Iron Maiden's "The Evil That Men Do". Floor could easily have replaced Bruce when he temporarily left the band.
PageMonster oh yea, I’m actually quite curious how would Floor sound on this song now
Mark Jansen's growl at the end of the song!(FLOOOOORTJE!!!) Is her former band member in after forever!
I've just started discovering Epica. Simone is among the top 3 vocalists I've ever heard. I can't believe bands like this exist with such high level musicians but I've not heard them. This is why channels like this are important. Sharing music is the only way to get above the pop/commercial dredge.
i think epica has better musicians but nightwish has better compositions.
That was a very good break down & analysis of this piece. Almost none of the "vocal coach reacts" videos does it at this level. Very well done!
Yes! Another great reaction and breakdown! Floor and Simone are both Dutch gems in the metal world, and still underrated imho. 😉 I don't know what's in our water but a lot of top metal vocalists are from the Netherlands. (I must have a wrong batch, though.)
I hope you get a lot of requests to introduce you more into this genre. I'd love it if you checked out Devin Townsend, did you react to his performance of Kingdom? Live at EMG, preferably. If not: definitely put it on your To Do list. I'll think of some more later, lol.
The drummer is so good!!!!
Welcome to Epica
The music of Epica is heavy yet catchy and includes Goth, Death and Prog metal elements.
This one is from their 10th anniversary concert, one of the most ambitious and complex shows in Metal history. Any song from this concert is a gem.
Please try -
Epica - Chasing the Dragon
Epica - Design Your Universe
The phantom agony, the kingdom of heaven are great songs of épica,
Stabat material dolorosa is beatiful song to react
Thanks for your reactions Christi!!
Simone and Floor are best friends.
