  • We took the boat out on Galveston bay and used live shrimp as bait to catch a variety of fish. We caught speckled trout, slot redfish, black drum, and various other species. Then we took our fresh catch home and cooked up a delicious fish burger. Make sure to stay tuned for the catch and cook portion of todays video! Thanks for watching!

      Stop it. If there wasn't a reduction there would only be 1 trout left to catch. People complaining were nowhere to be found over the last year meetings and conversations. Right now is peak speck time. Of course they look so abundant.

    • @BeforeOutdoors
      @BeforeOutdoors  2 месяца назад

      I think the limit reduction won’t help at all. I agree there’s less trout then there was 50 years ago, but I also think there’s less fisherman that know how to fish. As the saying goes, 10% of the fisherman catch 90% of the fish. There’s no accurate ways to count the number of fish in the bays. TPWD sits at the boat ramps and asks boaters what they caught that day and then base all of their “trout population” on that. What if those people weren’t fishing for trout, or what if they just don’t know how or where to catch them? The guides are still out there everyday catching limits without fail. Idk, I think there’s plenty of fish but most people don’t have the knowledge and don’t want to put in the effort to find them. As far as last years meetings, those don’t effect the outcome of the votes whatsoever. TPWD already knew they were going to lower the limit no matter what we had to say. CCA lobbied for the regulations to lower and of course tpwd is going to listen to them, that’s where the moneys at! CCA is a whole other topic that I don’t even want to get into. If cca had 100k members and all 100k said they didn’t want to lower the limits, cca would still push to lower them. They don’t listen to their members at all. It’s a tough situation regarding the whole limit thing. But overall I don’t think it will do much to lower it. More and more fisherman every year means more and more pressure. Pressured fish are harder to catch no doubt. Thanks for watching as always!

    • @rainbosprinkles6548
      @rainbosprinkles6548 2 месяца назад

      @@BeforeOutdoors they don't estimate the trout population by surveys. They conduct gill net studies and partner with organizations like the Hart Institute from Texas AM CC. Surveys are conducted as a small part of a whole picture.
      Our fisheries have been decimated by the depletion of seagrasses, oyster reefs, and a significant increase in pressure.
      Heavier shrimping decrease the available food for specks. They are also being killed in greater numbers as by catch due to the increase in shrimp nets. The depletion of oyster reefs has a direct impact on specks. The loss of seagrass has an impact on the trout population.
      Texas had over 2 million fishing licenses issued in 2023. Each year we break records with that number, meaning more fish being caught. There's several thousands of licensed guides running every week. Modern boats make every inch of the bay accessible. The croaker population has been hit hard by bait dealers which adds to the dwindling bio mass for the specks to feed on. Modern equipment makes fishing easier and more accessible to .ore people.
      Everything I stated is measurable and has been studied. None of that is my opinion nor a feeling about an organization.
      If you think it should still be 5, why not 10 still? Do you think 10 is too high of a number?

    • @BeforeOutdoors
      @BeforeOutdoors  2 месяца назад

      @rainbosprinkles6548
      @rainbosprinkles6548
      I agree with a lot of what you stated. The croaker population is a big deal. We used to have bull croaker runs 5 years ago and now it’s rare to even catch big croaker. Same goes for shrimp. Although shrimp have more regulations and they don’t shrimp on a 3 ft flat where the trout are. Shrimp boats are miles offshore lots of the time, and the trout are in the back of the bays. Why are we paying the price (lower limits) when tpwd and cca should be trying to push more regulations on shrimpers?
      Also, they absolutely do conduct surveys to measure populations. It’s one of the biggest ways they measure fish populations in the gulf and surrounding estuaries. As for the gill nets, that’s the same as fishing. What if they’re putting the nets where there’s no fish??? Fish are always moving and hanging out in many different types of areas. We’ve all had skunk days at spot, and then go to the same spot a few days later and catch limit after limit after limit. The fish move. I know they try to measure populations but there is NO WAY to count the number of fish. It’s all just an ESTIMATE. That’s a fact right? And no hate towards them, they try but it’s impossible. Remember how wrong they were about red snapper numbers? I can’t believe people have any faith in them controlling our limits after that.
      I also agree oystering destroys the habitats and that directly effect the fish. Like I said, I agree there’s less fish now than 50 years ago. But how can you deny that most people don’t know what the hell they’re doing when it comes to finding fish?
      You also have to remember that I’m talking about Galveston bay. Each bay has its own fish. The trout I catch in east Galveston bay are not the same trout that are swimming in port Mansfield. And there’s not thousands of guides in Galveston bay alone.
      I do not think there is a problem with a 5 trout limit. I trust my own experience on the water vs any “study” shown on trout populations. And let me tell you, I’ve caught more trout and more consistently in the past 2 years then I ever have. Do you know why? It’s because I’m actually learning where to find them and how to catch them. Becoming a better angler. The fish aren’t in the same places they were 10 years ago, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t still around. Dredging changes where fish hangout. Boat traffic effects where they hang out aswell. There’s hundreds of things that effect where the fish are located.
      Most people that fish consistently in Galveston bay will tell you that the fishing is still great. It’s only people who can’t catch a limit that say we need to lower them. The same people that couldn’t catch trout when the limit was 10 still can’t catch trout now that it’s 3. Too many lazy fisherman nowadays don’t want to put in the work to actually learn about the fish they are targeting and why and where fish move to throughout the bays. I see more people holding up limits of sheepshead vs trout, yet the sheepshead population is wonderful.
      It’s not my personal feelings about cca, it’s the truth. They will always push to lower the limit because cca wants big trout only, and catch and release trout fishing. They want record trout not record numbers. And that’s not how most people feel at all.
      It’s a tough situation like I said, but if lowering limits worked then our populations should be booming from when it lowered from 10 to 5. It didn’t work back then and it won’t work now.

    • @rainbosprinkles6548
      @rainbosprinkles6548 2 месяца назад

      @@BeforeOutdoorswe are going to keep going back and forth. Your logic is flawed by saying the population should be booming since we went to 5. Imagine if it was 10, but we can't measure "what ifs", whether for or against the change. Why is 5 ok but not 10 still? People are against change. That's all.
      You admittedly have a very I am not only considering East Galveston bay. We are talking about Texas. All of it. Are you suggesting varying limits based on bay complexes? The Galveston bay complex may have over a thousand licensed guides by now. 2 years ago we were over 650. It is where I live I'm very familiar with it.
      To suggest CCA wants only trophy trout and not numbers over looks the fact it takes numbers to get trophy trout. Only a percentage of the population will make it to trophy size. You need numbers to increase that chance and the number of trophies.
      I said surveys are part of the whole, not the whole.
      Unfortunately, I believe we are looking at this differently. I enjoy catching trout. I enjoy seeing my kids catch trout. I would like my grandkids to be able too. Since I was a kid to now, it has significantly changed. A stringer of 10 trout over 20" wasnt a big deal 30 years ago. That would be unheard of today.
      I enjoy eating trout. I don't need 5 to feed a family of 4. The waters are not your grocery store. They are a shared, limited resource. I'm very familiar with the red snapper. I worked commercial and charter boats when the most recent change happened.
      Shrimpers shrimp the bay....daily. They are not only near shore or offshore away from the trout.
      I didn't see you or many others against the reg changes at any of the scoping or other meetings. Maybe those that oppose it voiced their thoughts some other way and not just complaining after the fact.
      I do not like government regulation but I can see the need for this change in my experience as someone who is on the water multiple times weekly, as a person who spent years working commercial boats and charter boats, and as someone who can observe and conclude based on data.
      I'm not opposed to shrimper regulation. I'm all for making croaker a game fish. I'm all for prohibiting out of state oyster fleets coming in. I'm all for sea grass revival even if that means closing off some areas of bay complexes. I'm for treating charter licensing like commercial licensing. I'm also in agreement with the size and bag reduction. I'm for going to a tag system like that of red fish for trout.
      If we don't make changes, soon you'll be upset about new redfish limits....
