It's creepy watching Keone Young speak perfect English while dressed in his Mr. Wu wardrobe after watching and loving his character all these years.......Thank you sir for a great performance.
i was an extra on the show... and in fact i saw all of these scenes being shot 1st hand... indeed... it was strange when the actor who played Wu would talk between scenes.... since he has (as you can hear) a 'normal' American accent... he also has a facial tick... which if you watch closely... you'll see in the video... as a person... he was a very nice and friendly guy! :)
@@peteroliphant7289 Thank you sir for the insight. I wished the series would have gone a few more. It still stands as my favorite series. Congrats for being part of it.....
Keone put in a great performance. Wu speaks like a dozen words of English through the series, most of them expletive, and you still get where he's coming from and can relate to his emotional state. That's a testament to the writers, but also to the performance Mr Young put in.
@@Rekaert it’s like that improv exercise where two actors improvise a dialogue with one saying only “A” and the other only saying “B” and expressing it all through intonation, pace, loudness, pronunciation, and physical acting. I wonder if Wu’s script was actually written in English and Keone was told, “say that using only these four words.”
"Don't fucking arbitrate for credit!" What an utter genius! All of them - Milch, of course, but all of the actors, set design, lighting, costumes, extras, sound, grips, cinematography . . .
The Chinese story in Deadwood was great. Its really never been done before. Of all the groups in the American West the story of the Chinese has been disgracefully overlooked.
Same, man. Nothing beats it for me. To *this day*, if I re-watch the three seasons, I could literally just start from the first episode and do it twice in a row. There are entire courses dedicated to the dialogue, alone.
100 percent . Broke my heart when this ended. So grateful they eventually brought out the movie to end it off . 🙏😜 bar none best series, script and actors ever.
I think that is a generalization, I always figured Wu was at least as crafty as Al, you don't get into the position he was in without being smart and a good leader.
Keone Young suggesting the scene where Wu cuts off his queue is absolutely brilliant. It’s also a great lesson for writers that actors aren’t just machines that spit out your lines, they have lived lives and have ideas too. That kind of collaboration is what the show is all about. and don’t fuckin arbitrate for credit!
its just so wonderful to not only see how much thought and effort went into this show but also that the behind the scenes featurette actually shows this as well
At least Deadwood didn't break my heart, like GoT did. Even when they were given the axe and had to somehow mop up the plot lines and character arcs, they did it as well as can be done in these circumstances. We western fans have to wait long periods of time for gems, but Deadwood knocked my socks off Day. One. It was like "The Unforgiven" but in a TV series. I didn't know much of the above (how things operated on this set) and seeing the collaboration, well, it makes sense. It's an ensemble cast. You get one Head Chef in the director, but clearly he lets others flavor the soup too, if not come up with their own dishes. We've rewatched the series perhaps a half-dozen times, finding new things out. It's just top shelf front to back.
There's Milch doing something very important in this: He's explaining to the background cast what they're doing and why they're doing it. How they feel and some backstory. Not just "follow that guy. Run as fast as you can"
For me, he'd be a top 10 dinner party guest, along with James Ellroy. In their prime, of course. Milch is now in a nursing home suffering from dementia, Ellroy has slowed down considerably since the pandemic.
I think it is, despite that it ended prematurely. And to me, at least, I've come to see that final episode of season 3 as a proper ending to the series that works for me. "Wants me to tell him something pretty" is basically Milch saying to the audience, "you thought you were going to see a Western, but this is what it was. I dropped you into it for 36 hours. Now go think about it." Obviously, that's NOT where Milch wanted to end it, but at least it didn't end on a cliffhanger. It ended with the town escaping wrath from Hearst by fooling him by coming together, despite their differences.
@@vCLOWNSHOESv it is the greatest show of all time. It may have even benefited from the ‘disappointing’ ending in season three. That last line summed up the arguably anticlimactic ending perfectly - “wants me to tell him something pretty . . . “. Sorry audience, there’s no perfect bow wrapping up this one just as there never is in life. Plus it left us wanting so much more. I hated the ending the first several times I watched the entire series but have come to love it, frustrating as it can be, in the subsequent several times I’ve watched the entire series.
I love that Keone Young made the suggestion to have Wu cut off his queue, and David took it. It really felt like a powerful moment of character development for his arc.
I have always said a good movie is not about the acting. It's the director that makes the overwhelming difference. I never saw this clip before, but now I know why I loved Deadwood so much. I never enjoyed another western before or after. Not that this was a western per say.
It's like watching a master class in directing, producing, acting, etc., all at once! Such a shame it only lasted 3 seasons. But, then again, so did the original Star Trek. One thing is for sure, my interests in American history has been elevated by this show. To say this nation was born out of order and righteousness is a joke. Everything I've ever read points to a country born out of chaos and mayhem; encapsulated in this program.
I love that detail that Johnny has to try to carry a pig, drag Wu and point a gun all at the same time. It adds so much to what could otherwise be just a forgettable scene.
Wearing the que (pony tail, but in China men shaved the front while keeping a ponytail / braid / plait ) was a Manchü thing, I think (anybody correct me if I’m wrong ) … I think many southern Chinese didn’t especially like the Manchü Dynasty being in charge, but the que was still “a Chinese thing.” I think it’d be like holding onto an American cultural identifier even when you didn’t like the current President or party.
Honestly, Wu was the most deranged character on the show and proved himself quite cowardly as well killing his rival while he was drugged out and out of it. Don't get me wrong, wonderful character, but in terms of the rest, he was the worst.
That was an awful lot of excuses for a director that just didn't want to handle a dead pig. I get it - don't get your hands dirty. But own it. Don't pretend the straw substitute was some great artistic plan.
Mr. Wu is the main reason I hated Deadwood because his character in real life controlled 60% of the town he was the one not to be messed with and the series completely ignored that historical fact
He's the one who thought of the gesture after all. Maybe his take was multifaceted, or his interpretation evolved after thinking about it for some time. Big deal.
He says it symbolizes taking off the chains imposed on them for being Chinese in America. Not only does that make no sense in the context of the plot, it is antithetical to it. What does make sense, is severing the link to tradition and the old world to become American. The actor is merely a low IQ, low effort grifter
It's creepy watching Keone Young speak perfect English while dressed in his Mr. Wu wardrobe after watching and loving his character all these years.......Thank you sir for a great performance.

Any serious actor would sell their soul to be in the hands of such a brilliant and passionate creator as David Milch.

the hound and timund bromance was fun for me
"how did a mad fucker like you live this long
I thought about what I could add to your post but decided you summed quite nicely.
It broke my heart that the series was rushed to a disappointing conclusion. The movie did not really help that but was sort of OK I guess.
I loved Dead Wood and this was a funny and memorable episode. Swingin, coksuka, two
