Gene and Roger discuss the surprising inclusions and omissions among the 65th Annual Academy Awards nominations in February 1993. By this point they were no longer devoting entire shows to post-hoc complaining and kvetching, as they instead had full length special shows titled "Memo To The Academy".

Siskel & Ebert - Oscar Nomination Surprises (1991)
All right, all right, you've convinced me to do a 17th rewatch.
RIP Roger Ebert - what an American Original!
It’s fun to see if any if their BESTS are even remembered today.
That doesn't mean anything. Memory is only measurable from one person to the next. Popularity with movies and music is more a measure of marketing and business success than it is of artistic merit. The same is true for pop culture in general.
This was 42 years ago. 42 years earlier was 1940. Tech has changed much in life but not nearly as much as the ways life was transformed between '40 and '82.
I'm so glad this is on RUclips. The music, the adverts, the tone and set design is SO 'upbeat 90's city living.' It's a real mood. Plus since I was a kid in the 90's I only know about 3-5 of the movies on these lists, the really iconic ones, so I'm being introduced to heaps of new films.
Some terrible films. But 1989 was still one of the best years in cinema history.
how about stand by me great movie
I am very happy that they included Kalifornia. However, they missed "True Romance", "Dazed and Confused", "Tombstone", "Carlito's Way" and "Groundhog Day".
fast times at rigdemont high and no ghandi best picture 1982
“Aging” Antonio Banderas? He is still a Daddy in 2024! These dudes were TOO wrong!
The fact that Trainspotting, which was part of a whole culture movement unlike any of these movies is not even mentioned 💀
No holds barred
Still hacks with terrible taste that supports the "progressive" aka "commie" agenda
I just rewatched Hoop Dreams after last seeing it in the theatres in 94. Takes an amazing movie to beat pulp fiction, but that’s an amazing movie. PS Pulp Fiction is my favorite movie.
Troop Beverly Hills had a great line......."She gets lost in her walk-in closet."
Ed Wood!!!!!
My girlfriend at the time and I both fell asleep at the cinema during age of innocence
Those guys were so great - even if you don't agree with their opinions, you gotta admire their love of cinema and honesty.
Drop Dead Fred pretty much was the burial of Phoebe Cates career.
Down and out in Beverly hills was one of the worst movies i have ever seen. Shocking they borh liked it. It came and went and you never see it played on tv because noone liked it.
You love The Terminal now…wait 15 yrs & a washed-up reality show slug incites nationwide chaos while thousands of Muslims live it! And it only gets better!
This brings back some great memories
1989 really was a bad year overall; i cant recall any good movie from that year.
About a boy???? Lolol. Softest comedy ever
Saying Shallow Hal is the best comedy of 2001 is wild. Super Troopers, Joe Dirt, The Royal Tenenbaums, and Shrek. All way better.
Probably was the Farrelly Brothers effect. But it’s one of their weaker comedies.
I saw most of those films in the movies and loved them....Maybe it's because I was in high school hanging out with friends.
yeah we saw, and loved, lots of bad films as kids of course, most of us did not turn out as good as we think we did, so ....
"Elena Eleniak"
I was surprised to see Natural Born Killers and The Last Seduction on Ebert's list. Two great, but underappreciated films that could only have been made in the 90s.
@4:56 I'm pretty sure every home with kids owned that VHS tape.
I loved this show back in the day!
Damn Siskel went hard on Fred Savage
Hoop Dreams above Pulpmotherf**king Fiction? That's redic. I guess it's because I've seen this realm of documentary countless times. And it's difficult for me to even compare a documentary to a movie. I enjoy documentaries very much, but it's a completely different category. I watched Hoop Dreams once it came to VHS and had also seen it in the last 20 years. It's entertaining enough, but certainly not enough to jump it to the best picture of 1994, which was a Pulp Fiction year, which I probably put in the top 5 among the 50 best films of the year over the last 50 years, so hoop Dreams is a bold #1.
They lost me at Signs
Casino is a masterpiece! I'm glad Roger Ebert recognized such genius. RIP
I saw Wayne's World before they mutilated the guitar scene because Paramount didn't want to pay a ransom to Led Zeppelin.
Man I loved lil monsters as a kid
I'm surprised they didn't mention Aliens from 86, one of the best sequels ever.
The row, Row Row your boat song in Star Trek 5 was the highlight of that movie. showing their friendship together. loved it
I was 14 when this aired. I saw most these films at that time. We still had a sense of wonder going to the movies then, at least I did. Wonderful to see this again as a much older and more jaded adult.
Me too I can't believe ET was made 42 years ago.
Kind of surprised that UHF wasn’t in this special. Mostly because Gene and Roger roasted that movie to kingdom come, but I guess something in them told them to spare it. The reason I’m only kind of surprised is of course, because UHF is rightfully beloved nowadays. But you probably figured that already
@bullmonty764 They usually enforced a policy on these annual specials of ignoring movies that were fast-fading flops, but I'm not sure exactly how low the bar was set. UHF grossed only $6 million and wasn't seen by many. Even She's Out of Control and The Wizard grossed at least twice as much.
I love Star Trek V. In my top 3 for all ST films in general.
Is this missing bits or is it just me?
Copyright restrictions require edited film clips, but the rest is the episode as it aired.
Be glad you didn't make it to the 2020s.
Wow they made me want to see the Nintendo movie.
I loved this show. They made me love movies even more.
2005 was rather dire for films based on comic books. After the masterful Spider-Man 2 the year prior, the 2005 Fantastic Four, while not terrible, just doesn't cut it.
Them defiantly spoiling A History of Violence in the year it came out was wild.
Burt Reynolds is never out of style
