Gene and Roger discuss the surprising inclusions and omissions among the 65th Annual Academy Awards nominations in February 1993. By this point they were no longer devoting entire shows to post-hoc complaining and kvetching, as they instead had full length special shows titled "Memo To The Academy".

Siskel & Ebert - Oscar Nomination Surprises (1991)
"A different kind of drama or action picture." Well Burt Reynolds certainly did that with Boogie Nights. But he had no idea he was in a great movie.
I don't know what Ebert was carping about. The moment that Jaye Davidson was nominated for Best Supporting ACTOR, the cat was out of the bag.
I'm amazed that Speed Zone escaped from this list, I tried watching it the other night and man is it awful awful awful.
That scene with the pig was stupid
I love these videos. I used to watch Siskel and Ebert with my Grandmother when I was growing up. It was on at 6:30 on Sunday evenings in Southern California. Thank you for such great memories.
The dialog for E. B. Farnum alone should've won an Emmy in some category.
I love that Keone Young made the suggestion to have Wu cut off his queue, and David took it. It really felt like a powerful moment of character development for his arc.
Sexy Beast. 'Nuff said.
Kim Basinger and Helen Hunt did NOT deserve those Oscars!
Great show/movie.
Honestly, Wu was the most deranged character on the show and proved himself quite cowardly as well killing his rival while he was drugged out and out of it. Don't get me wrong, wonderful character, but in terms of the rest, he was the worst.
P Diddy going to the Electric Chair... Hopefully life imitates art...
Whoa... 2004 was either a really horrible year for movies or their taste had grown rancid over the years.
Conversely, it was a very good year and their lists withstand close scrutiny. On the other hand, 2005 was a great year and their lists are the worst in the history of the program.
@flaccidusminimus2170 Well, as they say there is no accounting for taste, so everyone will see such things differently. Of the films on this list that I saw at the time the only one I personally liked was Kill Bill Volume 2, but then again I tried watching both volumes years later and found them insufferable. Of the few others I saw, Sideways in particular felt like the death of Alexander Payne. After such a spectacular start with Citizen Ruth and Election, he seemed to fizzle with About Schmidt, and then Sideways was so horribly whiny and twee that I haven't been able to watch any since. Also Spider-Man 2 was as over-hyped and as underwhelming as The Dark Knight, but what do I know... I prefer my superhero movies fun and imaginative, not dark and gritty. I also feel like Sam Raimi really lost his way doing those movies, finally found his groove again with Drag Me to Hell, and then immediately lost it again. I should probably check out Vera Drake though, since I love Life is Sweet, Secrets & Lies, Topsy Turvy, and a few later Leigh films. And my favorite film of all time came out the next year, and was absolutely slaughtered by the critics, all except David Cronenberg who called Tideland a poetic horror film. I think it's an overwhelmingly beautiful masterpiece that feeds my soul each time I've seen it (or read the wonderful novel), but very few others feel similarly and that's fine with me.
Nearly three decades later, this is still one of my favorite years for the movies. One of the remarkable things about it is that it showed many of our best directors firing on all cylinders: Martin Scorsese with "Casino," Michael Mann with "Heat," David Fincher with "Se7en," Ron Howard with "Apollo 13," and Todd Haynes with "Safe."
@tomh.2405 And Oliver Stone's best in my view. Precipitous downward slope after "Nixon" and I doubt he has made a good movie since.
Maria Caso = So fine and so talented!
You Me and Everyone You Know, was decent but the young kid sexual content and the pedophile subplot totally ruined it. And I'm amazed they included King Kong but never had any of the LoTRs on their lists.
If Lost in Translation had a face i would punch it...hated that movie. American Splendor is underrated.
In the Bedroom is criminally underrated. The Mexican is underrated And how is Shallow Hal better/funnier than Rush Hour 2???
Crash was fucken awful. Sorry guys.
Out of curiosity were these based on their American release dates? Looked up Spirited Away, and it came out in 2001 initially. Haven’t seen any of these, but it sounds like a good group of films. Ebert said in another interview that he thought 02 was a good year for movies after a couple slow years.
Yes. Most awards in the U.S. (like the Oscars) are as well. Professional critics typically only get column space to officially review movies for publication when they hit theatres in their respective cities. IMDb classifies movies by the first time they played *anywhere* in the world (even an obscure film festival), which can be misleading.
@@flaccidusminimus2170What do you think of the films mentioned if you’ve seen any, and of that year overall?
Kathy Bates deserved it all the way!
If only these two guys could see what the Oscars have become
Take a shot everytime these two say someone should get an oscar nomination
It's mostly Roeper who does that. It was also his prefered line for complimenting a performance - his idea of high-level criticism. Then it became contagious in subsequent years as Ebert grew ill and tired.
these If We Picked The Winners shows, which I'm just discovering and are wonderful, are finally making me really appreciate Siskel
Did Ebert ever review The Fly on his own? If he did I can't find his review on his website.
I don't think so. It came out in mid-August during a time when he was usually on vacation. Perhaps when he came back the Sun-Times wanted him to move forward and didn't provide him with column space to review it. Both bypassed it on TV that Summer because it came out during the gap period between the end of their old Tribune show "At the Movies" (early August) and the beginning of their new show on Buena Vista (September 20).
You don't watch The English Patient. You suffer through it.
Swengen is my all time faverite character I have ever seen. His reaction to a given event just could not be anticipated. The only thing that was odd was they called him the lymie many times but he used an American accent so was that a choice made after it was writen or what. If you have not seen Deadwood it is a great piece of entertainment but be warned David Milch is know for being hard to work with and some executive that I hope is out of the business just cut the show so it does not end it just stops. Unfortunately the movie does not help it conclude.
I think they were guarding against the possibility of McShane's accent slipping...but it never really did.
7:59 love it when he says Dumb and Dumberer 😂😂😂
Holly Hunter is from Georgia. The accent is genuine.
I remember liking Pink Cadillac. But it was decades ago.
Mean Green Mother is one of the greatest villain songs ever
In the thumbnail photo, why is Ebert holding the Japanese flag and why is Cuato coming out of his chest?
Why wouldn't they?
Siskel and Ebert WITH the original commercials? Gotta give that a thumbs up.
That Star Trek movie was so bad that I walked out. I will suffer through most movies, but not this one.
This specials of Siskel and Ebert are great
Mr Wu has his history, but there was always something very sweet about him. And, him and Al were Abbot and Costello 😊
Nephilum
Wow, just when I thought i couldn’t love this show any more - the thought and play that went in to create this masterpiece. Thank you David
I love how the 90’s decided to have a theme instrument. Very considerate for future historians.
Where can you watch the episode where they both review madagascar and the longest yard
"One False Move" is an incredible movie.
Bound was great. I'm due to watch it again. P.S. Fargo is a one word title.
The Unforgiven won the Best Picture Academy Award. Siskel didn't even have it on his top ten 😂
Or give it thumbs up. He always went his own way and didn't care about consensus.
Respect to Wu! Great character
Primal Fear was a damn good film
Both sideways and eternal sunshine slot somewhere in my top 100 films of all time. 2004 was a strong year.
What a year for movies. I wonder if they had any idea what a mark in pop culture these movies would make.
Germans and Poles? wow... Poles were murdered in the millions and were an occupied country - this type of shit drives me nuts
I always respect Ebert and Siskel's list, but Blade Runner, The Thing, Gandhi, The Wall, The Year of Living Dangerously and (please!) Fanny & Alexander are between the 1982 best movies too...
Fanny & Alexander and The Year of Living Dangerously were 1983 releases in the States. Both guys included both movies on their list for that year. There's a reason why they received Academy Award nominations for 1983 - that was their year!
The Thing and Blade Runner were not all that embraced at the time.
4 good ones in my opinion: The Hudsucker Proxy Bullets Over Broadway Nobody's Fool Don Juan DeMarco
