That part where Milch talks about soaking in information and then trying to forget it is the key to creative genius.

It’s been said so often that Milch is a writerly genius, which he was. It’s been seriously under recognized how much of a moral and ethical genius he was

Very satisfying to watch two intelligent and talented people who respect each other talk about the masterpiece they created. I have the series on Blu-ray so I have this as a special feature; thanks for posting it on RUclips.

This interview makes so much more sense having fully watched all of Deadwood.

A superb actor interviewing a story-teller genius. I just finished watching the show for the third time, after a very long pause. It was very gratifying. I had forgotten about the brilliant Brian Cox. I wonder if the two Scots knew each other prior to the show. Thank you for posting it!

I have just finished waiting the series for the second time including the movie and will probably watch it again at some point. However even with the movie there were a lot of unanswerd questions. For instance What happened to Silas Adams? What happened to Cy Tolliver and how did Joanie end up with the Bella Union? When did Mr Wu marry let alone become a Grandfather? When did Jane leave Deadwood? What happened to Blazanov? What happened to the Languish theatre troupe? A lot of loose ends that would have been tidied up with another season. Still it was a brilliant series and rest assured I will enjoy it for a third time at some point in the future.

Unfortunately the show was cancelled before Season 4 was made because The Sopranos was outperforming Deadwood. A terrible, terrible tragedy and something I'll never forgive HBO for.

Such an amazing show and unique writer, director. I watched Deadwood shortly after getting married and likely irritated my wife by robbing myself of sleep I simply had to watch the next episode!

Him and David Chase should put their heads together and write something.
Sorry to hear about Mr Milch's illness .

No offense to David Chase but he is nowhere on the same level as David Milch in terms of writing.

If Merrick was alive today he would have LOVED Deadwood's attention to historical accuracy.

Regarding the opening 2 minutes, I think the perfect example of this is the scene with the guy who kills Wild Bill. In the show, he's kinda drunk and tries to get away, but his saddle falls off and he slips in the mud and gets caught. While that is historically verifiable/corroborated, it's more important (I think) that it just makes perfect television. Milch was curating moments from history.

21:06 It's unfortunately cruel that Keith Carradine inaccurately predicts that Milch will be able to continue writing the show for "a while".

This was filmed after Season 1. Another 2 years is still "a while" albeit not long enough.
