  • A broad overview of the critically acclaimed HBO series Deadwood created by David Milch. Westerns may not be my favorite genre, but there's still plenty to appreciate in the multi layered storytelling and the crew's dedication toward bringing this gristly era in history to life. Even though the ornate dialogue and deliberate pacing can make it difficult to get into, Deadwood always manages to pay off the investment by the end of each season and its movie compared to most if mainstream entertainment these days.

    Deadwood is not only one of HBO's best series, but maybe one of the best shows of all time. Not for the faint of heart and certainly not for sensitive ears, but if you take the leap, you'll fall in love with every other character and love to hate the rest. Al Swerengen, in particular, might be one of the best written characters in all of television. The movie was a little uneven, but I'm very glad we got a solid, satisfying movie to close the major plot lines. Deadwood will definitely be on my list of shows I give repeat viewings.

      I agree. I love the way they treat race. Not today's PC bs. They look it dead in the face, honestly presenting it in the context of its times. The only show I've ever seen do that. The West as it probably was.

    Deadwood was so good at introducing a bad guy, then introducing someone else at odds with them that's even worse, making you side with the previous bad guy.

    I love this series so much, one of the best series of all time in my opinion.
    It's fucking criminal they cancelled it after 3 seasons. I wish we could've gotten the whole story, there was so much David Milch wanted to do.

      Thst show's cancelation was truly a blasphemy to good taste. Don't forget they tried to give closure with the Deadwood movie in 2019, I believe. Haven't seen it yet seeing as I literally just finished the series, but I've heard good things.

    If you are interested in a modern take on the western, I highly recommend “Justified” starring “Deadwood’s” Timothy Olyphant as Deputy U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens and Walton Goggins as Boyd Crowder.

    Loved this. But I hope you didn't mean to imply at the end that Unforgiven was a story about pure goog versus pure evil, did you?

    • @elusiveeye1424
      @elusiveeye1424  17 дней назад +1

      What I meant was how Unforgiven is anything but a classic noble gunslinger story, and how most Westerns tend to be more complex than certain people give them credit for.

    I just wished they toned down the Shakesperean language. Most of the common folk were lucky enough to be able to read,let alone use high toned language. Still it is one of two of my very favorite TV shows. The other being Justified. (I'm not a dyed in the wool Timothy Olyphant fan either)

    Maybe not the greatest television story of all-time (although it is for sure in the top 50), and there is room for debate about whether or not the series had the greatest all-time characters and character arcs (although it is for sure in the top 20), and you could make one or two cases that can go head-to-head with it on world-building (although it is for sure in the top 10), but I’d fight anyone who claims any show ever matched Deadwood’s dialogue. The first couple of seasons of The West Wing (when Sorkin was doing lots of quality cocaine) comes closest, but it is still a distant second to Deadwood. So brilliant I can’t even put it into words.

    This is a composite and responsible review, but I think it misses a few things: 1)Not a Western - the reason it takes so much explanation to distinguish it from "other westerns" is that it is in fact NOT a "western". As the video explains, almost everything we Deadwood fans appreciate about Deadwood is lacking in the formulaic, Hollywood-created "western" genre. That the drama is set in the 1860's in a soon-to-be (in)famous mining camp called Deadwood does not make it a "western", any more than a European drama about a set in a town in the 1940's would make it a (WWII) war movie, irrespective of the war's intrinsic influence on everyone and everything. 2) The characters are even more complex than characterized here: each major character and many minor ones exhibit overlapping layers of morality, conviction, hypocrisy, and benevolence. E.g., while driven by a sense of justice that is largely agreeable - as compared to the lawlessness of the time and place - Bullock is not a flawed crusader with the simple goal of promoting law and order to Deadwood. Rather, he was drawn by the gold rush like everyone else, identifying the business opportunities ancillary to mining (like a hardware business). When faced with the complications of being a newcomer in a dangerous and competitive environment he gravitated to what was most familiar - being a lawman - which lent itself handily to justifying or excusing his many physical assaults on those who displeased him (e.g., E.B.; the widow's father; his fight with Swerengen for calling him out on his devotion to his love affair with Alma Garrett than camp business). Indeed, his self-indulgence led to the the savage beating of Otis Russell which, while not undeserved by that character, would only have brought her greater harm and, by extension, would bring more trouble to the camp. He "fixed" that problem by rushing to deliver a message through Dan to his cut-throat boss that consequences would be felt by the camp if Russel left alive ("If he don't die" scene), essentially requesting the hit on Otis Russell, who, by the way, we never hear from again. The point here is not that Bullock lacks a moral compass, but that he is a product of his abusive upbringing/violent tendencies, which become his winning formula to deal with the dangers and uncertainties of the times. This is a more profound, interesting and justified view of the character, given the pains that the writer has gone through to demonstrate these attributes and shortcomings. These gems are harder too if a viewer's appreciation of character development is limited by the confines of "westerns" paradigm.
