A Critique of Andor: More Mediocre Than Masterpiece
Просмотров 1453 месяца назад
I never imagined this would end up being my longest video to date, but it turned out I had a lot to say about Andor. Some good, some bad, but all of it as fair and unbiased as a long time Star Wars fan judging a newly released sci-fi show divorced from the twisted machinations of Disney can be. In any case, I hope whoever checks this video gets something instructive out of it, RUclips: ruclips....

Why You Should Watch Deadwood: Review/Retrospective

A broad overview of the critically acclaimed HBO series Deadwood created by David Milch. Westerns may not be my favorite genre, but there's still plenty to appreciate in the multi layered storytelling and the crew's dedication toward bringing this gristly era in history to life. I just wished they toned down the Shakesperean language. Most of the common folk were lucky enough to be able to read, let alone use high toned language. Still it is one of two of my very favorite TV shows. The other being Justified. (I'm not a dyed in the wool Timothy Olyphant fan either)

If you are interested in a modern take on the western, I highly recommend “Justified” starring “Deadwood’s” Timothy Olyphant as Deputy U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens and Walton Goggins as Boyd Crowder.

i think its crazy that roslyn was a feminist character (from ur clip ) when all i saw was her potential for great leadership bogged down by modernity concepts, and she changes it when she realizes its hurting not helping. subtext ? in real life ppl dont seem to change there mind like roslyn did, she was a great growth character, but a reboot might never do such a thing lol they might take the netflix approach and preach politics at you and the HBO route of shoving ( unwanted gross ugly ) nudity that adds nothing to the story maybe even ruin an episode. I think mary mcdonnel did a unique thing , i do hope a reboot is focused as this battlestar was, even if they just follow a different crew or set of stories.

without the God universeal force aspect, it would not have reflected the real world, not to mention that religion is also a human drama ( apart from the God thing ), as science can be a religion and worshiping the aliens and misinterpreting ancient science books into religious notes - conflation and confusion. but then you lucky few who get that direct guidance and see the hand of God. the show did a great job on all fronts but sure it has some small flaws due to real life.

I do a rewatch every other year and it’s just enough to forget the details and then still be able to everytime feel the same emotions, surprise and awe of it. In addition, because I rewatch it every other year the more I get TRULY creeped out by how much we are getting closer and closer technologically to kick start all of it. No, seriously, when I first watched it did seem no matter how gripping and beautiful the story itself collectively was a little bit far fetched that this can remotely even happen like ever. By watching it every few years it not only ages very very well but easily starts to fill me with dread at how much closer and closer it could be a reality we all in our reality can experience in many different ways. When I first heard that saying this has all happened before and shall happen again I was like ah ok yeah the old we need to “fear” technology yada yada and the more we grow faster and faster to these tech heights and especially on my now rewatch with now truly (which was far fetched even 3-4 years ago) with the early infancy stages of how AI is really becoming interwoven in now our ever day lives of even the average person, I mean crap the last watxh I had of the series which was only around 2 years ago keeps increasing my validity of how like shit we are getting there since even I now use Chat Gpt on the reg , which legit wasn’t a thing at all during last watch and watching it now w this new technology now a part of my life and I’m just one regular person at how truly creepy it is upon my rewatch now. That’s why it ages well. And in regards to the over season growing of religious content you can view it parallel to the tech argument I just described, it’s at first snarls at religion and the cynicism and then shows you the basic fundamentals of it and then crosses into mysticism. And to those of us that went through a similar journey I began to even understand that trajectory also. I mean it’s truly goes back to the cycle of life that does occur, especially even as you age you understand the concepts of God and religion which does end up showing you that we grow in our understanding of it, how you early on in life can see the ridiculousness of the concept of our standard fare of religion we are given and yes it’s deff scoffed at but then you either out of desperation or some tragedy start to delve into it and go through the stage of believing in the basic principles of either of the 3 major ones we have and even turn blindly to it only until you reach another point in your life where it gets shattered by the reality it’s a hypocritical lie that’s empty, and thus leading into despair one that was worse then what initially brought you to it to then realizing over time that their is much much more then what’s just on the “main serving course” to follow or righteously uphold beforenand discover a whole new world and concepts of which you never even dreamt was in existence to see but the thing is that if you didn’t understand Albright even the tragedy of the standard ones you would never be able to even begin to table the more mystical ones you discovered. Think of it as a look behind the curtain stage . I mean the show is so deep on so many levels. Like tackles sooooo many philosophical concepts and yes it’s on a grand humanity scale but you also realize the whole show is also a metaphor for the evolution or “hero’s journey “ in each of us as individuals. Trust me. Anytime I watch it and as i personally experience changes and grow older with in me and the reality around me this show almost shows me something new each rewatch and now I can see how this epic journey is happening in our own lives as well. That’s why the saying this has all happened before and it will again give me more insight on even deeper levels upon each rewatch.

You're making the same mistake the people who defend this show make. You are reading far more into it than you should. Looking for profound truths in the "stories" (there are more than one) that simply don't exist. What you see in the show is what you get. Throwing enough people into the meat grinder to start the Rebellion is exactly Luthen's plan. The reason it doesn't resonate as something that would result as a success is the fact that, in all accounts, the only place where it would be successful is a poorly written story, instinctually we all know it wouldn't work. But again, the people (who are in the minority that rate this show highly) overlook that because they see more profound things under the surface of it all, that simply aren't there. Luthen is unhinged and his morality lies within a grey area. The reason thats not made more apparent, is because the way the story is written overall is just bad. I'll give the show it's due props though. Stellan's, Andy's, and Forrest Whitaker's acting performances ranks without a doubt some of the best acting performances on Disney+ on that season and show. And the fact that they did as good as job as they did, with THAT excuse of a script is Impressive, let me tell you. And the show needed it, because Diego Luna wasn't going to and didn't carry the show. The man simply can't emote to save his life. His entire acting range, is self. Kinda like Harrison, except Harrison has a charisma and charm that Diego doesn't. I didn't like Cassian in Rogue One and I like him even less after Andor. But Tony Gilroy said he "was still chasing the audience" and honestly, I don't know who the audience he is chasing might be. I can only imagine that he, Disney, and the rest of the production crew, actively made the commercial decision to write the show at a "slower pace." And that offsets and differientiates itself from the much "faster paced," eye candy movies and shows of the modern era. Basically I think he made the decision to make something in the ballpark of "Bladerunner 2049", just the story arc and settings changed from a dystopian cyber punk world with replicants, to Star Wars. And some of the cinimatography "hints" at that, it was nowhere near the magic that Roger Deakins, the cinimatographer for Bladerunner 2049, created, that movie really is gorgeous to look at. But Andor more or less looks like your basic Disney+ Star Wars show. I've heard the term "blank canvas art movies" to describe those films and I think it applies to Andor. "The story and characters are empty, there may be a few half-baked intellectual questions thrown around and a narrative but the possible answers to those questions aren't genuinely explored because the filmmakers either lacked any interesting answers of their own. or they went willing to push the narratives to the extremes in order to explore for possible answers so the film's will pose curious questions and then just fall back on formula." Explaining that topic, and that pretty much describes Andor in a nutshell. Andor is a "blank canvas Star Wars art show." pretty much. Keep in mind, I put "slower pace" and "faster pace" in quotes because I don't see pace as anything more than subjective observations of the viewer. If a viewer thinks either pace while watching. Than the story has deep rooted structure issues in regards to the story. And if you write your show for either "pace" as something to aim for. You are baking in storyline issues, from the start. But there you have it. Thanks for your insights, it was an interesting watch. Also just to get in front of the "fans" of this show that will scream at me about "how dare you say we are in the minority, everyone I see likes this show." To that, I will just say, it's unfortunate that you intellectual Star Wars "fans" didn't pull the watch time up on Andor, you would think that with all the hype and intellectual circle jerking you people do with it. It would have surpassed and cleared Mando season 1 by a country mile as far as watch time. But Alas, here we are, debating the merits of a show that has up to this point done the worst, in the Disney+ show watch time war. So yeah, you are in the minority.

Thanks so much, i adore BURN NOTICE and never thought it got enough credit. This is really a fantastic video. I feel similarly about THE SHIELD, if you happen to have a similar interest in cop shows. Completely overplayed topic, i know, but this one is so shockingly different. The cops are completely corrupt, for one, and VIC MACKEY, the corruptest of the i think any cop ever, just fucking fun. And the last season is legendary, but no fair peeking, you have to earn it.COPAGANDA did an episode about it and says it better than i ever could. This is a composite and responsible review, but I think it misses a few things: 1)Not a Western - the reason it takes so much explanation to distinguish it from "other westerns" is that it is in fact NOT a "western". As the video explains, almost everything we Deadwood fans appreciate about Deadwood is lacking in the formulaic, Hollywood-created "western" genre. That the drama is set in the 1860's in a soon-to-be (in)famous mining camp called Deadwood does not make it a "western", any more than a European drama about a set in a town in the 1940's would make it a (WWII) war movie, irrespective of the war's intrinsic influence on everyone and everything. 2) The characters are even more complex than characterized here: each major character and many minor ones exhibit overlapping layers of morality, conviction, hypocrisy, and benevolence. E.g., while driven by a sense of justice that is largely agreeable - as compared to the lawlessness of the time and place - Bullock is not a flawed crusader with the simple goal of promoting law and order to Deadwood. Rather, he was drawn by the gold rush like everyone else, identifying the business opportunities ancillary to mining (like a hardware business). When faced with the complications of being a newcomer in a dangerous and competitive environment he gravitated to what was most familiar - being a lawman - which lent itself handily to justifying or excusing his many physical assaults on those who displeased him (e.g., E.B.; the widow's father; his fight with Swerengen for calling him out on his devotion to his love affair with Alma Garrett than camp business). Indeed, his self-indulgence led to the the savage beating of Otis Russell which, while not undeserved by that character, would only have brought her greater harm and, by extension, would bring more trouble to the camp. He "fixed" that problem by rushing to deliver a message through Dan to his cut-throat boss that consequences would be felt by the camp if Russel left alive ("If he don't die" scene), essentially requesting the hit on Otis Russell, who, by the way, we never hear from again. The point here is not that Bullock lacks a moral compass, but that he is a product of his abusive upbringing/violent tendencies, which become his winning formula to deal with the dangers and uncertainties of the times. This is a more profound, interesting and justified view of the character, given the pains that the writer has gone through to demonstrate these attributes and shortcomings. These gems are harder too if a viewer's appreciation of character development is limited by the confines of "westerns" paradigm.

This might be one of the worst reviews I have seen on the show. So much of what you say is directly contradicted by scenes in the show, or even scenes that you show directly after criticisms. You completely missed the parallels between Mon and her daughter I think it typically gets described as "Perrin is just a lazy asshole that Mon has to put up with" but I think it's a little more grey than that. There's a specific interaction when they get handed the glasses of squigs and Mon says to Tay "Do you remember Perrin at 15? the academy firebrand" with a smile. Perrin shakes his head and looks away, as Mon says "How things change". As well as another moment when they are talking to senators talking about the view from the window. I think it's pretty clear she did once see something in him, that she was just as bought in to the idea of the Chandrillan marriage at the time as Leida. But over time they grew apart into the bitter relationship we see in the show. Mon's constant stress of living the double life and constantly maintain a lie, in front of the people that should be her closest confidants in life. Would lead to her handling situations poorly (like we see in episodes 4-6 with her interactions with Leida, wanting to take her on trips for the show or image, and Leida calling her out on it. And instead of dealing with the situation, she leaves the table and makes a jab Perrin that he was no help.) and deteriorating their marriage and relationship. And I think all of that plays in perfectly with what we see at the end of the show. Normally in shows that cover familial arranged marriages and the power dynamics that come with that, it's the parent using the child as a pawn against their will to gain their own political power. But in this case, it is Mon allowing Leida to walk into the same situation she did, an arranged marriage. Everything we know about Mon's perspective would tell us this would be something she would heavily fight against. But because of her own mistakes, she now has to use Leida's want for this fantasy, marrying her off to a family she despises, instead of stopping her. And the pure amount of pain that causes her is portrayed profoundly by Genevieve's acting on the couch explaining it to Vel. She cares about her because she is HER DAUGHTER. awful

@@elusiveeye1424 considering I saw many channels about writing, cinematrography and reviews in general praising Andor, and I think Andor was awesome.I thank thee for being fair and insightful, but I strongly disagree with your opinion. The last channel I saw criticizing Andor didn´t even understand a lot of the plot points... he was criticizing Andor for being dumb when he didn´t understand what was happening.

NEver saw this never will...these newer versions of the original series just outright desecrate the original storytelling, and when a franchise feels the "need" to pander to certain groups in order to gain acceptance, it wrecks the whole f*****g thing.

This is probably the only and ever and last remake of an older show that has and will ever work. That’s what makes it astounding. Trust me I’m super skeptical of reboots and reimagined shows and detest what is being done nowadays. Quantum leap is a perfect example- I was floored and furious when I watched this new one . But this… this… is something that will never happen again.

Deadwood is not only one of HBO's best series, but maybe one of the best shows of all time. Not for the faint of heart and certainly not for sensitive ears, but if you take the leap, you'll fall in love with every other character and love to hate the rest. Al Swerengen, in particular, might be one of the best written characters in all of television. The movie was a little uneven, but I'm very glad we got a solid, satisfying movie to close the major plot lines. Deadwood will definitely be on my list of shows I give repeat viewings.

I agree. I love the way they treat race. Not today's PC bs. They look it dead in the face, honestly presenting it in the context of its times. The only show I've ever seen do that. The West as it probably was.

Maybe not the greatest television story of all-time (although it is for sure in the top 50), and there is room for debate about whether or not the series had the greatest all-time characters and character arcs (although it is for sure in the top 20), and you could make one or two cases that can go head-to-head with it on world-building (although it is for sure in the top 10), but I’d fight anyone who claims any show ever matched Deadwood’s dialogue. The first couple of seasons of The West Wing (when Sorkin was doing lots of quality cocaine) comes closest, but it is still a distant second to Deadwood. So brilliant I can’t even put it into words.

Last night, for the 2nd time in 20 years we just finished watching what I believe is the very best Spy TV series of all time: BURN NOTICE. It ran 7 seasons and had amazing story/writing, and especially great cast. If you are looking for a great action packed show...

I love this series so much, one of the best series of all time in my opinion. It's fucking criminal they cancelled it after 3 seasons. I wish we could've gotten the whole story, there was so much David Milch wanted to do.

Thst show's cancelation was truly a blasphemy to good taste. Don't forget they tried to give closure with the Deadwood movie in 2019, I believe. Haven't seen it yet seeing as I literally just finished the series, but I've heard good things.

You mention that Apollo and Starbuck's qualities end up merging/swapping. It's funny that you mention that bc I was thinking the same thing when you described Rosalyn as the "idealist" and Adama as the "realist" ...when really those two swap those archetypes themselves. (in reality Adama becomes the idealist and Laura grows into the realist.) That's oversimplifying of course and I'm not saying it well but I think that's along the lines of what they were going for
