A Critique of Andor: More Mediocre Than Masterpiece

  • I never imagined this would end up being my longest video to date, but it turned out I had a lot to say about Andor. Some good, some bad, but all of it as fair and unbiased as a long time Star Wars fan judging a newly released sci-fi show divorced from the twisted machinations of Disney can be. In any case, I hope whoever checks this video gets something instructive out of it,

Finally, an honest review of andor that explains why it is just mediocre, but that is a way higher bar than most disney Star Wars shows, but mediocre is still mediocre

I don't regard Season One of "Andor" as simply mediocre. I thought it was pretty good. But I do believe it was flawed. Nor do I regard it as the best production from Disney's Star Wars. I have too many issues with that show's first season to accept that. None of the Star Wars/Disney productions are perfect. But I can think of a handful that I liked more than Season One of "Andor".

I never watched any Disney LA show, but Andor is the only one that has no appeal to me whatsoever. Absolutely nothing about it looks interesting, and I'm honestly *so* tired of Disney fans telling me I need to watch it.

This might be one of the worst reviews I have seen on the show. So much of what you say is directly contradicted by scenes in the show, or even scenes that you show directly after criticisms.
You completely missed the parallels between Mon and her daughter
I think it typically gets described as "Perrin is just a lazy asshole that Mon has to put up with" but I think it's a little more grey than that. There's a specific interaction when they get handed the glasses of squigs and Mon says to Tay "Do you remember Perrin at 15? the academy firebrand" with a smile. Perrin shakes his head and looks away, as Mon says "How things change". As well as another moment when they are talking to senators talking about the view from the window. I think it's pretty clear she did once see something in him, that she was just as bought in to the idea of the Chandrillan marriage at the time as Leida. But over time they grew apart into the bitter relationship we see in the show. Mon's constant stress of living the double life and constantly maintain a lie, in front of the people that should be her closest confidants in life. Would lead to her handling situations poorly (like we see in episodes 4-6 with her interactions with Leida, wanting to take her on trips for the show or image, and Leida calling her out on it. And instead of dealing with the situation, she leaves the table and makes a jab Perrin that he was no help.) and deteriorating their marriage and relationship.
And I think all of that plays in perfectly with what we see at the end of the show. Normally in shows that cover familial arranged marriages and the power dynamics that come with that, it's the parent using the child as a pawn against their will to gain their own political power. But in this case, it is Mon allowing Leida to walk into the same situation she did, an arranged marriage. Everything we know about Mon's perspective would tell us this would be something she would heavily fight against. But because of her own mistakes, she now has to use Leida's want for this fantasy, marrying her off to a family she despises, instead of stopping her. And the pure amount of pain that causes her is portrayed profoundly by Genevieve's acting on the couch explaining it to Vel. She cares about her because she is HER DAUGHTER.
    awful

You're making the same mistake the people who defend this show make. You are reading far more into it than you should. Looking for profound truths in the "stories" (there are more than one) that simply don't exist.
What you see in the show is what you get. Throwing enough people into the meat grinder to start the Rebellion is exactly Luthen's plan. The reason it doesn't resonate as something that would result as a success is the fact that, in all accounts, the only place where it would be successful is a poorly written story, instinctually we all know it wouldn't work. But again, the people (who are in the minority that rate this show highly) overlook that because they see more profound things under the surface of it all, that simply aren't there.
Luthen is unhinged and his morality lies within a grey area. The reason thats not made more apparent, is because the way the story is written overall is just bad.
I'll give the show it's due props though. Stellan's, Andy's, and Forrest Whitaker's acting performances ranks without a doubt some of the best acting performances on Disney+ on that season and show. And the fact that they did as good as job as they did, with THAT excuse of a script is Impressive, let me tell you.
And the show needed it, because Diego Luna wasn't going to and didn't carry the show. The man simply can't emote to save his life. His entire acting range, is self. Kinda like Harrison, except Harrison has a charisma and charm that Diego doesn't. I didn't like Cassian in Rogue One and I like him even less after Andor.
But Tony Gilroy said he "was still chasing the audience" and honestly, I don't know who the audience he is chasing might be. I can only imagine that he, Disney, and the rest of the production crew, actively made the commercial decision to write the show at a "slower pace." And that offsets and differientiates itself from the much "faster paced," eye candy movies and shows of the modern era. Basically I think he made the decision to make something in the ballpark of "Bladerunner 2049", just the story arc and settings changed from a dystopian cyber punk world with replicants, to Star Wars. And some of the cinimatography "hints" at that, it was nowhere near the magic that Roger Deakins, the cinimatographer for Bladerunner 2049, created, that movie really is gorgeous to look at. But Andor more or less looks like your basic Disney+ Star Wars show.
I've heard the term "blank canvas art movies" to describe those films and I think it applies to Andor. "The story and characters are empty, there may be a few half-baked intellectual questions thrown around and a narrative but the possible answers to those questions aren't genuinely explored because the filmmakers either lacked any interesting answers of their own. or they went willing to push the narratives to the extremes in order to explore for possible answers so the film's will pose curious questions and then just fall back on formula." Explaining that topic, and that pretty much describes Andor in a nutshell. Andor is a "blank canvas Star Wars art show." pretty much.
Keep in mind, I put "slower pace" and "faster pace" in quotes because I don't see pace as anything more than subjective observations of the viewer. If a viewer thinks either pace while watching. Than the story has deep rooted structure issues in regards to the story. And if you write your show for either "pace" as something to aim for. You are baking in storyline issues, from the start.
But there you have it. Thanks for your insights, it was an interesting watch.
Also just to get in front of the "fans" of this show that will scream at me about "how dare you say we are in the minority, everyone I see likes this show." To that, I will just say, it's unfortunate that you intellectual Star Wars "fans" didn't pull the watch time up on Andor, you would think that with all the hype and intellectual circle jerking you people do with it. It would have surpassed and cleared Mando season 1 by a country mile as far as watch time.
But Alas, here we are, debating the merits of a show that has up to this point done the worst, in the Disney+ show watch time war. So yeah, you are in the minority.
