  • This is an in depth review of the NBC Universal 2003 reboot of the original Glen A. Larson TV series Battlestar Galactica, expressly created under the guidelines of Fair Use and created in order to allow newcomers to discover the show for themselves and obtain it through legal means such as purchasing a subscription to Peacock, purchasing the digital releases on Amazon and ITunes, or obtaining the official Blu Rays. The main purpose of this video is to critique various aspects of the series and encourage others to discover it themselves.
Newcomers can expect a general breakdown of BSG's premise, characters, action, music, and drawbacks, but nothing that dips too heavily into spoilers. Above anything else, this video is meant to entice as many poeple as possible to watch Battlestar Galactica for themselves.

I watched this show when it originally aired and it still holds up today. Some the cgi is bad but the overall story acting and directing is fantastic.

I always thought many people missed the reality that this show was about a complete and total tragedy. It would have moments of happiness, but those moments would only provide temporary relief from the constant sense of despair and survival. It makes sense to me that as time progressed many would gravitate towards religion or chaos with only a very few taking an enlightend approach to their reality.

Their population went from 60 billion to less than 50000, all you would want in the end is a small measure of peace, to them that was victory. The ending is very epicurean and ultimately almost too real, there's only so much you can safeguard for the future with your finite life. The fleet are in denial for a long time about what has happened. There's only so much you can take before acceptance. The series skirts the line of many themes I can't call it anything less than a masterpiece.

I do a rewatch every other year and it’s just enough to forget the details and then still be able to everytime feel the same emotions, surprise and awe of it. In addition, because I rewatch it every other year the more I get TRULY creeped out by how much we are getting closer and closer technologically to kick start all of it. No, seriously, when I first watched it did seem no matter how gripping and beautiful the story itself collectively was a little bit far fetched that this can remotely even happen like ever. By watching it every few years it not only ages very very well but easily starts to fill me with dread at how much closer and closer it could be a reality we all in our reality can experience in many different ways. When I first heard that saying this has all happened before and shall happen again I was like ah ok yeah the old we need to “fear” technology yada yada and the more we grow faster and faster to these tech heights and especially on my now rewatch with now truly (which was far fetched even 3-4 years ago) with the early infancy stages of how AI is really becoming interwoven in now our ever day lives of even the average person, I mean crap the last watxh I had of the series which was only around 2 years ago keeps increasing my validity of how like shit we are getting there since even I now use Chat Gpt on the reg , which legit wasn’t a thing at all during last watch and watching it now w this new technology now a part of my life and I’m just one regular person at how truly creepy it is upon my rewatch now. That’s why it ages well.
And in regards to the over season growing of religious content you can view it parallel to the tech argument I just described, it’s at first snarls at religion and the cynicism and then shows you the basic fundamentals of it and then crosses into mysticism. And to those of us that went through a similar journey I began to even understand that trajectory also. I mean it’s truly goes back to the cycle of life that does occur, especially even as you age you understand the concepts of God and religion which does end up showing you that we grow in our understanding of it, how you early on in life can see the ridiculousness of the concept of our standard fare of religion we are given and yes it’s deff scoffed at but then you either out of desperation or some tragedy start to delve into it and go through the stage of believing in the basic principles of either of the 3 major ones we have and even turn blindly to it only until you reach another point in your life where it gets shattered by the reality it’s a hypocritical lie that’s empty, and thus leading into despair one that was worse then what initially brought you to it to then realizing over time that their is much much more then what’s just on the “main serving course” to follow or righteously uphold beforenand discover a whole new world and concepts of which you never even dreamt was in existence to see but the thing is that if you didn’t understand Albright even the tragedy of the standard ones you would never be able to even begin to table the more mystical ones you discovered. Think of it as a look behind the curtain stage . I mean the show is so deep on so many levels. Like tackles sooooo many philosophical concepts and yes it’s on a grand humanity scale but you also realize the whole show is also a metaphor for the evolution or “hero’s journey “ in each of us as individuals.
Trust me. Anytime I watch it and as i personally experience changes and grow older with in me and the reality around me this show almost shows me something new each rewatch and now I can see how this epic journey is happening in our own lives as well. That’s why the saying this has all happened before and it will again give me more insight on even deeper levels upon each rewatch.

Wow…I’d not seen the clip with Olmos before, and I’d not heard that he ad libbed “So say we all.” You earned my sub then and there.
Loved what you chose of Mary McDonnell’s off screen discussion. That idea of hers, a “…middle age woman discovering power.” and her need to connect with the world as it is…well, excellent decision on your part. She’s an interesting person. She speaks quietly and very thoughtfully, not demanding or even commanding attention, but confident that if you you can’t be bothered to pay attention, it’s your loss. I admire that.
I had a moment when you explained that you’d not been much engaged by Game of Thrones, The Boys, or Zack Snyder films. This was surprising - and very refreshing. If I can indulge for a moment, I would add Deadpool, John Wick, and Invincible. I found a fence to painfully straddle with Daredevil. DD had been my favorite comic as a kid. And I loved the Netflix series. At first. Then episode four of season one happened, and I stayed away for about a year. Fortunately, 1/4 was the only episode that completely crossed the line for me, though others came very close.
I just find arguments describing these shows as “appealing to” or “intended for” adult audiences so ironically disconnected from my own sense of reality. For me, the whole brain splatter thing is stalled in adolescence, and I’ve never understood why anyone’s estimation of a given film or show substantially increases in tandem with how many human beings are eviscerated. Many people really seem to hinge their approval on it, proclaiming something “grounded” and “realistic” only if violent deaths are frequent and as explicit as imaginable. You can see it behind all the Snyder fanboy arguments and, in fact, Snyder’s own comments. I’ve yet to hear anyone defending Snyder who doesn’t have gore at the foundation of their preferences. It’s very weird to me, and actually kind of pisses me off. I will never understand why some folks insist on seeing the horrors of the world glorified in their entertainment. Real life has far more than enough of it, thank you. At least, that’s how I feel about it, in part.
(An aside, I had tried with Snyder, at one point. But for me, he’s more what I’d want for a director of photography for certain kinds of films, as he has unusual talent and skill as a cinematographer - though even in that he needs oversight. I do very much like Watchmen, though I skip several bits here and there when his regressions into adolescent bloodletting get the better of him. Nonetheless, his (misguided) depictions of, for instance, Night Owl, are so striking it made me (also, as it turned out, very misguidedly) wish Snyder would do a Batman film…until, of course, he did.)
Excellent essay. Really, as good as anything on RUclips.

Awesome tv show. Can be watched today and is still great, and better than most things done today. The argument original vs bsg 2004 makes no sence to me. There are no possible comparition, 70s bsg was, well, a 70s space opera, great for its time, but so far it goes. BSG 2004 is so more complex in every aspect and possible sence, that sets it appart and above completely.
What I value and impress me the most, was the level of acting. Everybody seems to do oustanding performanse, even secondary characters.
Special mention to my beloved and worshiped Tricia Helfer, she alone worth the entire show for me. I think she never got proper recognition to her talent and the display of it that made in BSG.
BSG 2004 and Babylon 5 remains my top sci-fi series of all time.
Great video analisys and review! 👍🏻

BSG is one of the best tv serie ever ! A extremly good scenario, Experiences from humanity in crisis and wars has been smartly exploited, A bunch of second rank expert actors hired for the all casting, a passioned teamed, A complicity in all sectors, not a single season with a low rate: DYNAMITE ! I'd love to be a part of it. A success in human experience shared.
Paul Hogan's Saul tie colonnel is my favorite: He gives a perfect mirror and replies to main characters : He (Colonnel) like all the other character is given by the scenarist a chance to improve it's life and tolerance and spiritual exprerience: all characters from BSG are beautifull persons at the end of the serie: WHAT A WONDERFULL FINAL: it gives hope to everybody from the audience: GENEROSITY FROM writers: THANK YOU !!!

You mention that Apollo and Starbuck's qualities end up merging/swapping. It's funny that you mention that bc I was thinking the same thing when you described Rosalyn as the "idealist" and Adama as the "realist" ...when really those two swap those archetypes themselves. (in reality Adama becomes the idealist and Laura grows into the realist.) That's oversimplifying of course and I'm not saying it well but I think that's along the lines of what they were going for

I love the show too, though Katee Sackhoff is so over the top, reviewing BSG, I tend to skip most of her appearances (especially the scenes with "Apollo" are boring). Baltar and Capricas arc is really interesting, and Olmo is divinely performing Adama. I like the new genesis aspect: we/this world/now is what happens after the show! Love that theme from ME - makes me wanna cure the Genophage once again!

BSG 2003 started with a very good 2-part pilot followed by a nearly as good 13
episodes season one,but lost its appeal to a growing number of viewers after around
midseason 2. While some aspects of the show remained strong - the show has a strong
cast for example - it started to undermine itself after the S2 midseason finale.
While the 2nd half of season 2 was airing it dawned many viewers that the suggested
long arc concept simply wasnt there. So when after a row of "solo" episodes the show
settled in a new direction at the end of the season, the damage was already done and
    many viewers opted out.

BSG is the epitome of Sci Fi. The amount of allegory that is so well done is unsurpassed.

I really disagree here. Adama is patriarchical to an extent. But he is far from all wise or all knowing. And it is clearly established that he leans very heavily on Laura Rosslyn's skills and intelligence for direction. Without Rosslyn there it's pretty clear he could have easily gone the route of Admiral Cain. So I tend to see him more as a strong male leader rather than a patriarchical figure. See the original series for a true version of patriarchical leadership. Lorne Greene is never wrong. He serves on the ruling council ( clear military civilian conflict) Whenever the Council questions Adama they are made to look childish and stupid. Then he gets to oversee gently his two slightly wayward sons Hoss and Little Joe (errr.... Apollo and Starbuck) dropping pearls of wisdom to guide them. He's the most Gary Sue leader they could have invented.

Like the way you describe a real ptriarchal character back then and not the way people wrongly use the word today. I also like that the show took head of the words of Katie Sackhoff when she was boxing Lee because she said to the writers no matter how badass Starbuck was she would need to cheat to fight Lee because in real life she would maybe get one good hit in and then he would deck her and they put her using a kick to the face in the final take of that scene.

    But, hate the reboot.
The gender swapping of favorite characters was the kickoff of every Hollywood movie doing it to this day.
The music is too distracting and doesn’t fit sci-fi classic.
Too much bongo and drum dominates the scenes…this isn’t a jungle movie but a space opera.
I tried a few times to get into it but it’s just not for me.
The classic hasn’t aged well but the reboot is its own thing.

Original and reboot do not have much in common. Basically it is just the premise of an artificial lifeform seeking to wipe out human civilization. And a few names of characters but that's pretty much it. Original BSG followed that same pattern as Star Wars at that time, being good fighting evil while the reboot's characters are much more nuanced and realistic in my opinion. I love both the original and the reboot. Gender swapped characters as Starbuck or Boomer are not a problem for me because they are no Mary Sues and have their weaknesses and flaws.
