Look, I love the heck out of this game, but if Nintendo's not going to add some additional value (like a battle tower or New Game Plus or whatever), then this is just them selling a re-skinned Super Nintendo game for $60, and it's fair game for the reviews to call that out IMO
I disagree with you entirely. Its a complete remake with new animations, and its absolutely beautiful graphically. It doesn't need new content, and the fact you expect that is ridiculous. If Sony did a faithful remake of God of War 1 with no new content. People would give it 10/10 easily. Nintendo does it and everyone becomes a critic. The creator of Mario RPG wants to make a sequel, but review score doesn't give Square confidence for a sequel.
@@Piccolo918 I respect your opinion, but do you think it makes sense for Nintendo to charge the same price for this as they would for a full sequel? EDIT: Also since you brought it up, the newer God of War is the kind of graphical leap I would expect to be charged full price for (I know it wasn't a "remake", but if they did that kind of work to remake GOW1 I could see charging full-new-game price for that). The Dead Space remake is another example. SMRPG 2023 is a remaster at best IMO.
@Lodsiek Remaster you have to be kidding. You are entirely delusional for saying that statement. Mario RPG is a REMAKE not a remaster. Mario RPG has new characters models, animations, and textures.
I'll take this new better looking remake over trying to hunt down a pricy copy of the original any day. I knew exactly what I was spending my money on, and I'm not disappointed.
I owned a copy in 96 though I felt bad about it. I was good friends with my next door neighbor and we both liked SNES RPGS. For a couple of months every year his mom's job took them out of state so I would loan him one of my RPGs I had recently beaten and he would do the same then we would return them when he got back. For some reason though his family never returned after he loaned me Super Mario RPG.
$60 plus tax for a shot for shot remake doesn’t exactly scream value… Sounds like Nintendo is simply trying to cash in on nostalgia which is a hard pass for me. If they added some new content, that would be a different story. This just seems …kinda lazy.
Called it, remakes should either be a huge visual upgrade over the originals or left alone imo. Resident Evil 2 was a huge visual upgrade, Link's Awakening was a huge visual upgrade, Crash and Spyro were huge visual upgrades, Mario RPG looks more like a remaster imo. Mario RPG was groundbreaking for the time, I remember I was blown away by it when I first saw it at the store kiosk, it pushed the SNES to its absolute limits. Frankly the Remake loses some of that charm for me, the characters look more like redrawn chibi style, rather than polygonal recreations. It's just not as impressive on the Switch to warrant a second purchase at full price, nostalgia would rather pull the cartridge off your shelf and back into your system for another replay. Anyway I feel the score might just keep getting lower, critics already got their Nintendo representation with Mario Wonder and TotK, the marketing for this game isn't really there, and this just might be a compelling argument as to why 1:1 just isn't cutting it for most people.
I like the remake, but it has lots of weird feel issues, the animations don't hit the right way some times and you feel like something is missing in both animation and sound and the obvious linear interpolations can look a bit ugly with the modern look
Great video. I remember renting this game from the video rental store inside our local Kroger in the late 90s. It confused the hell out of me, but even back then I could tell it was an incredible game
5/10 should be average, but with how game game ratings work in practice anything below a 7 is considered mediocre or worse, dumbing it down to essentially being a 5 point score. From that perspective an 8 would be in the middle of that 5 point score and thus an _"average"_ score. It's incredibly stupid and completely misses the point of having a 10 point scale in the first place. Might as well just use a 5 point scale instead, but I guess with how predominant the 10 point scale is that someone hearing you call a game a 5 might lead to them thinking you're calling it trash. 🫠
I have not tried it yet, its on my wish-list for Christmas. But I have never played it before because the original was never released in Europe (snes) and I never picked it up on the virtual consoles. BUT! Big BUT! From what I have seen, this is how you make an remake/remaster! Same with Link`s awakening. Graphical change, but no change to story or anything like that. I been looking forward to an FF7 update since the 2000`s but once I found out that the story was changed, I lost all interest. Also, meta-critic is like reading an movie review, does not mean shit squat.
the thing is... it not a remake it is a remaster and did almost nothing new. i was hoping maybe a few more levels new items. but no they went to the original 100%
Re masters are just upscales of older games same graphics just better resolution and frame rate. This was made from the ground up hence why it’s a remake.
What do you mean 83 isn't great? 8/10 is a great score.
In which world is 83 an "average" score ? 🤨
In what world is 8/10 average?!
I don't know dude 83 is a great score

8.3 is fine, it has a few flaws, it's not perfect just because it's muh Nintendo

This, and I never like the modernized music in any of these for some reason. At least they have the option to switch it back

What a ridiculous video, 83 is a great metacritic score

I tried to get my son to play the snes mario rpg for a while now and he had no interest in it, but as soon as he got on the new one he was hooked.
While the game’s great, I definitely hope they patch the framerate soon. It’s not gamebreaking, but the dips in framerate certainly distract a bit
I agree on the remake 1:1 copy ratio of the original but with newer graphics. That's how remakes should be.
the thing is... it not a remake it is a remaster and did almost nothing new. i was hoping maybe a few more levels new items. but no they went to the original 100%

it's a remake
83 is fine, stop the yap
