Same as Mario & Luigi Superstar saga with the advanced Splash Bros move, actually dealing extra damage to spiky enemies and trivializing the Queen Bean fight.
The "Spin Shoes" is a reference to Super Mario World where doing a spin jump can allow you to bounce off of enemies and objects that would normally harm you.
Not only that, it would destroy a lot of things that were otherwise immune to your boot soles. Smash bricks, explode two-hit monsters in one hit, et cetera.
An even more obscure thing about the Star Egg is that it has a very slightly different animation when Peach/Toadstool uses it. The star does its little butt wiggle slightly faster, and the sound it makes on the second shake is ever so slightly pitched higher than for other characters. Now THAT'S obscure.

12:44 The Fireworks pattern at the end is a reference to Super Mario Brothers 3. In Super Mario Brothers 3, you obtained a card whenever you cleared a stage. Getting three matching cards will trigger a fireworks sequence and grant you an amount of lives depending on which three cards you matched. Mushrooms give 2 lives, Fire Flower gives 3 lives, Super Star gives 5. The pattern matches the fireworks at the ending of Super Mario RPG depending on how many fireworks you buy. Mushroom needs 2 fireworks, Fire Flower needs 3 fireworks, Super Star needs 5.
And that person is me. Nearly quit the whole fucking game because I intentionally missed the next one thinking I made it after literal _weeks_ of trying. Ye _gods_ do I hope they make that easier to pull off in the remake.
Oh, it's really not that obscure, but a lot of people might never notice: when you get a game over in this game, you lose all your progress and restart at the last save point, but you keep all your experience. It's just one of the ways the game takes it easy on you. If you immediately save again after a game over you'll probably notice the level being overwritten on the save file. By exploiting this feature I once made a save file where Mario starts the game at Mario's pad (the earliest point you can save) at level 27, making the entire game a complete massacre.
Use this to do the starman glitch. Save before a starman box is coming up. Get the starman and run thru a bunch of enemies. Once the starman runs out, die on on purpose. You will start at your last save point, but will have retained the experience you got while on the starman. The starman can only be used once. But if you die after using it and before you save the game again, the starman is reobtainable. This is used for experience grinding. This is only practical where there is a starman right around a save point. Bandit's way has one. Sea has one. Best one is Land's end. Other starman locations like Kero Sewers and Volcano are too far away from a save point to be practical. This is what the comment above mine is referring to, albeit I have fleshed it out and explained it a little more.
100 jumps in a row @29:58 is something else all together. For those who have never attempted it, it becomes physically and mentally taxing. After awhile, you begin to loose count of your jumps, "how much further, how much longer!" You become aware of your physical state, "I haven't blinked for awhile, I need to blink..." but blinking is a risk to your perfect timing. Your eyes begins to blur as your retinas hyper focus on the same 10 pixels and flashing stars. And all the while, you know you're going to fail, you just know it.
The 100 Super Jump thing is so brutal, I know what you mean. Retroachievements has it in the SMRPG set, and it's been contested on whether it should be in or not for years because of how prohibitively hard it is. I've tried it and I get frustrated pretty quickly. I can barely get to 13 even, and I LOVE Rhythm games! Sucks :(
I have something that might help you out. I just recently posted a vid on my site where in the description I give some tips that make it easier (At least for me they do anyways) and the vid shows me performing the 100 jumps :)
Still just as bad in the remake too. I got my record to 23 jumps, but I don't think I'm going to even break 30 for the attack scarf unless I spend hours on it.
@@DestroyedArkana My current record is 99... The amount of pain, physical, emotional and psychological, when I realized I beefed it on the very last jump....
@@darkuscarlet Hey, I wish you the best of luck honestly in either version, to be honest honest, I did it TWICE in one day... First time I was frustrated from the night before but I eventually got it. I was already post game (remake) so it ended up being useless... However, the second time was actually because I made a new save file, proud I finally it, and even gave myself a challenge, ONLY Mario attacks, it helped in the late game to have gotten the 100 jumps EARLY, I actually was extremely chill for the second one, so keep at it man! I believe ANYONE can do it with enough time and practice, if it helps use a metronome at 68 beats. That's one of the helps for me, the other is to just focus your sight at one or two spots, the top of the enemy, or on the numbers, or a third spot if you don't use spiny's but a flying enemy (for some reason) the shadows.
Back in my day you used to stay up until 2:30am with your friend on the master save file with the one copy of smrpg you guys shared trying to hit the 100 jumps and then once you finally did it yelling loud enough to wake up your mom who beat both of you with a slipper. That’s how we got it done.
When I was a kid, that missable hidden chest in the first act of the game drove me crazy when I had the "play a sound when there's a hidden chest in this room" thing. I spent hours jumping over every square inch of that room before giving up, only to find out as an adult I couldn't get the chest anymore.
@@indigofenix00 they could just add a hidden platform to get up there (or add one later after some progression). That way it can stay as a reference to OG while actually being accessible.

When this game was new, an old frienemy of mine from middle school convinced me that Luigi was possible to get in your party. You had to find his wish in Star Hill the first time you go there, and then you're supposed to fight a randomly encountered enemy that was a Mastadoom but he was like a palate swap of him. He's supposed to be a lot harder than Mastadoom, and Luigi actually helps you beat him, and becomes selectable afterwards. I was a fool and believed him and tried this SO many times. It wasn't until I finally got the internet in my house and I was able to look up "can you play as Luigi in Mario RPG?" that I finally let go of this absolute LIE!
Probably why they are going to change a number of things for this remake. A lot of the secrets were fun to find and share with your friends at school back in the SNES days. Now, because of the internet, you can just look everything up. This game's secrets were made in the the era where word-of-mouth thrived.
Also, maybe someday it will be easy enough for us to make ROMs so that you can make one just like that and as a joke you can send it to your frienemy with a note detailing what the game is about with a reminder on how to get Luigi🥳
I'm entirely convinced the "Yoshi X" and "Red Yoshi X" is based off the energy drink "Taffman Ex" made by Japanese company, Yakult. It has a loose resemblance to the strategy guide's graphic of the drinks. Given it's availability in Japan, I wouldn't be surprised if this was the case. (Fun Fact: The Staminan drinks from the Yakuza series also borrow inspiration from the Taffman Ex drinks)
I was personally thinking it was supposed to indicate that it was some sort of nebulous diet supplement or something like that (like what comes to mind if you hear something like "vitamin X"), but this sounds more likely.
About 10 days before this video was posted, someone asked about the Monstro Town Mushroom on GameFAQs. It's possible that this video was being edited while the first person in human history finally asked "What's with that Mushroom in Monstro Town?" The Sheep Attack can be used on Machine Made Yaridovich, but I think it only works after he splits up. I used it on him while doing a low level run. I'm pretty sure the other Machine Made bosses are immune. Another interesting thing about the Marrymore Hotel is that you're not allowed to save as a bellhop because the manager won't let you take any breaks. But you can still save if you jump to the save platform from the toad woman's head. Toad popping up in the menu and saying "Secret code found" and "I'll play with you as many times as you like" sounds like it was an early trigger for the Beetle Game. I'm guessing they programmed the mini game to be played by entering the secret code, but later made the Game Boy a purchasable item and left the old code in.
The Monstro Town Mushroom is a more obvious fake in the remake, since items stack there and the two Mushroom types go in different stacks. It's also actually useful, since it can be used for out-of-battle recovery without inflicting Mushroom status.
Either this guy made a thousand videos and uploads each one when it's convenient to do so, or he just makes one video really fast whenever he feels like it
It’s definitely the second. Creating RUclips videos is akin to being an artist and many artists will create something really quickly when they are inspired and produce really fast while in their normal day to day they aren’t making anything.
If you know Cybershell you know he's extremely slow at pumping out content. Most likely, he took a chance on the rumors being true and they were. He had the video ready to drop

i skipped ahead wondering why it was so short, and came back to be berated. not complaining lol, i feel like this is the most emotion ive ever heard from this guy
I wager the Spin Shoes and the animation are references to the spin jump from Super Mario World, which let you jump safely on things that normally would hurt you - though it usually didn't harm them unless they were already vulnerable to the basic jump, then it did more damage. Also, here is a trick: If you're at a place with a star after a save point, you can use it to clear the room of all but one, let the star end, and let the last group kill you, you'll go back to the save point, the star and enemies will be back, but you keep the EXP. You can repeat this as much as you like.
These are more like observations than anything, but there’s two things I caught on while playing the game regarding the party members’ sprites: First is that during battle, the little HP windows showing each of the characters’ health use said character’s diagonally downward facing sprites for the portrait, but the exception to that is Peach, the portrait for her HP window is entirely unique! I wonder of there’s a full body sprite of it in the code somewhere… Second is that every character has sprites for getting hit, which on the overworld are repurposed for when said characters are surprised by something, and the overworld is the only way you can see the diagonally downward facing surprised sprites for the characters… except for Geno, as there isn’t a single scene where he gets surprised by something while facing downwards (again, I wonder if that sprite even exists…). Also an addendum, this is almost true for his angry sprite too, but you can see it in the second Belome fight, where a Geno Clone will use it if he casts Flame Stone.
12:54 This is actually a cool reference to Super Mario Bros. 3. At the end of every stage you collect a card with a mushroom, flower, or star on it, and after three stages if you get a three-of-a-kind you'll get a certain amount of free extra lives: 2-up for three mushrooms, 3-up for three flowers, and 5-up for three stars.
This game's length and difficulty were perfect for the age we were when it came out. People just always need to find the negatives in something (myself included), it's just the type of workd we live in.
The Muku item costing 69 coins and healing you for 69 health is probably because his name is made of characters that can be read as 6 and 9 in Japanese goroawase. 6 can be read as "muttsu" or "mu" and 9 can be read as "kyu" or "ku". So MuKu.
A game developer who works at Wayforward said on Twitter that the story they heard about the name is that its Tukwila with the syllables spelled backwards to form La-kwi-tu or Lakitu. Tukwila is a city located in King County of the State of Washington which is the same county where Nintendo of America's headquarters in Remond is located and more importantly, its where Nintendo of America was first established! Nintendo of America's first headquarters was a warehouse in Tukwila rented out to them by a local businessman named Mario Segale, whom Nintendo would later name their mascot after. With this in mind, it does seem highly probable that the localizers for the original Super Mario Bros. decided to honor the city where the company got its start by naming a character in the game after it, especially since in addition to Mario they also named Kirby after John Kirby, the lawyer who defended Nintendo against Universal Studios' lawsuit against them over Donkey Kong. It just seems like Nintendo at the time had a thing about naming characters after people & places that helped shaped company in their early days.
The YoshiAde and Red Essence items and their 3D render artwork are based off of these little glass bottles of medicine/energy drinks that you can find at convenience stores and drug stores all around Japan (such as Lipovitan D, Arinamin V). Sometimes there are regular strength versions and then extra strength versions. YoshiAde and Red Essence are called ヨッシーエキス and レッドヨッシーエキス or "Yoshi Extract" and "Red Yoshi Extract" respectively.
2:27 you absolutely hit the nail on the head with how the art style for this game and I love the almost claymation look that the pre rendered promo art has. This is the best looking remake I have seen in awhile that looks incredibly faithful in its core gameplay and look, from what we have seen so far, and that, we should only be eternally grateful for, not nitpicking how "new" it looks and not liking it because we are pixel art snobs. Remember that Secret of Mana remake that came out recently with the lame as all hell anime chibi models and terrible bright sunday morning cartoon look? I do. It was absolutely terrible.
@@CrAzYpotpie i meant the character designs more than the backgrounds and such, those look good, although they don't look "special", which i guess it's unfair because the original is charming *despite* its "ugliness". Still, my gripe is with the character designs, they look too round and safe, they don't express in an interesting manner, that's why i felt disappointed, while also being thankful that mario wonder seems to try to break that mold a little bit. I also don't think we owe being thankful to any company, we shouldn't hide our criticisms in favor of pleasing companies so they do well next, and i don't have any criticism of the game so far aside from the original not needing a remake in my opinion, i only feel like that artstyle has run its course a long time ago.

If you like Bowser in this game you NEED to play Bowser's Inside Story. It paints such a picture of Bowser of this bombastic blowhard loser and then builds him back up into a badass and shows you how his minions have genuine love for him. Its awesome!
The 100 super jumps is also a bit trickier than even a 3 frame window. The idle animation on certain enemies moves the timing of the jump around. Some enemies like the mimic chests don't move at all, most enemies bob up and down though. Bosses on the other hand can have complicated idle animations, e.g. tank-head Smithy is very wiggly.
Plus the game legitimately lies to you on when to press the button. Toad's tutorial clearly tells you to press it when you're about 'one Mario' above the enemy, or like one pixel before your sprites touch. It turns out you're basically supposed to press it when your sprites are overlapping, but not one twentieth of a second later. It turns out my childhood record of 16 was actually from me getting so tired of practicing, I was consistently late three or four times, but not _too_ late, in a row.
Cybershell, I love this video. You shared some stuff I hadn’t seen before, and I didn’t expect that. Also, I laughed pretty hard when you went through your 100 super jumps rant. I’m with you. I can usually get 30+ but I’ve never done close to getting the Super Suit.

With the remake out, here are some fun revisions to this video about the remake. Geno is the only party member to deal 9999 damage, but not the only one in game with the addition of Booster's post game boss battle. And for anyone curious, yes the Exor glitch still works. The Axem Rangers do get their own unique teleportation animations. Its fun to see unused content finally utilized! The secret code exclusive to the Japanese version is no longer region locked. It still does nothing though. The Super Suit is not easier to get but now you can keep track of how many jumps you do. Although I feel like it could be distracting knowing how much jumps you have. Whether the timing has gotten easier im not sure but theres definitely a change in timing past the 12th jump. The max ive got it to was about 24 jumps. Punchinello's status as not part of the Smithy gang is more obvious in the remake due to the post game rematches involving non Smithy gang bosses since the postgame takes place after you beat the game but to make the post game possible, the Smithy fight is treated like a dream sequence. Its a little weird but it somehow makes the postgame fit chronologically. If I missed anything feel free to add on. Stuff like the skill swap glitch is not something Ive tested yet nor the Mack/Claymorton boss skip.
Great video! Here’s one. If you attack Croco with the basic flame attack, it sets him on fire, but if you grind and learn Super Flame before the battle and then use it, it will not trigger him being set on fire.
Huh very interesting. I know its a very linear and hand-holding RPG but you think they would have thought of that interaction and made it blaze him up.
Also, the reason why the Jump Shoes/Spin Shoes make Mario spin is because you can actually Spin Jump on enemies that are normally immune to being stomped in Super Mario World. Also, I did the Super Jumps, but only with Wii U-VC's savestates.
If you would like to see it done the old fashioned way, I just recently posted a vid on my homepage of me doing just that. I was unable to post the link here on youtube because all said comments got deleted.
Damn, I didn't know the super jump timing was so tight... I did it as a kid judging it based on visual queues. I don't even remember it taking too long and the "do something a lot of times" thing in games I always considered annoying was dodging the lightning in FFX.
@@HexenDarkside That's what I did too. When Mario lands on an enemy, if you look closely, he actually stops for a split second. If you get the feeling right, you can learn to use that little freeze-frame moment as a mental cue to press the button. All that's left is to fall into a trance and not blink until you've done it. Also, I don't know if you've had this experience, but I find it much easier to do on certain enemies. I honestly found Spinies very hard to do it on, for some reason, yet everyone practices on them. I like to do it on certain bosses. The earliest I boss I find it easy to do on is Croco, but after him, Belome works really well, to the point where I feel like the game is a little more forgiving on the timing. Later on, Jinx works pretty well too. I always kind of wondered if there was some reason they seemed easier to do it on, or if it was just me?
When I learned the timing for Psychopath as a kid, I would always always use it when I found a new enemy or boss. It was also one of the few SNES games I owned as a kid, so I replayed it a lot.

@@jackall-trades6149 This is already the easiest SNES RPG ever, and they'll make it even easier in the remake. Being OP is completely irrelevant. And yeah, for such an easy game you would expect most people to find it reasonable to 100% without too much effort. People being ironic about somebody wanting this stuff to be more manageable are trying too hard. This is not Dark Souls or Shin Megami Tensei, folks.
The fireworks making a different explosion at the credits depending on how many you bought is probably based on the end-of-level bonuses and toad houses from SMB3. A mushroom at 2 purchases, flower at 3 purchases, and star at 5 matches up exactly with how many lives you’d get if you matched mushrooms, flowers, and stars in Mario 3-2up, 3up, and 5up respectively. Matching at the end of levels even had the screen rise up to show a firework of whatever you matched.
You mentioned Tomato, he did an interesting breakdown on his Legends of Localization blog about the weird Psychopath quotes. Most of them in English are just random non sequiturs and rarely even jokes. In Japanese, most of them are pop culture references, but almost all of them are weirdly obscure, or seemingly unrelated to the enemy associated with them. Overall gives the impression they were some last minute idea whipped up as a joke and they just used whatever random quotes they happened to think of, almost like a placeholder. Also, one of them is possibly a sex joke in Japanese.
I don't have recording equipment or really know how to set all that up (old man alert), but for the super jumps, for some reason the Spiny enemy and its variants always seemed really really hard to do it on. Strangely enough, I've found certain bosses actually seem easier to do it on, though that could just be me. Croco, Jinx, and Belome. Especially Belome, during his first fight. The game seems strangely forgiving on the timing with him. Also, during the jumps, watch Mario right when he lands on an enemy. He actually stops for just a split second before launching up off the screen again. If you get the feeling right, you can use that split second as a visual cue for when to hit the button. I recommend this: save the game before Belome's first fight (or rather, savestate at the beginning of the fight - old man alert again, lol) and turn the sound down on your monitor. Learn to use the visual cues for the jump, hitting the button right when Mario has come to a stop on top of Belome - not right when he lands, but a split second after - and don't blink! As you practice, you might even find the timing getting burned into your mind, so you start to _feel_ it. I hope this helps someone!
Very interesting to hear that you found some enemies easier. Maybe it has to do with their positions on the screen? I think that's the only thing that could change the timing.
Thank you for finally making me feel better about the 100 jumps! I remember feeling dumb for how many years and playthroughs it took just for me to find and get into the Grate Guy casino.

For some reason I was also not able to figure that one out (Even with the ingame clue) and when I found out from someone who I used to babysit, I, um, pretty much kicked myself afterwards wondering how on Earth I was not able to find it... Then there was an ice puzzle from the GBA game Buktai, and when I was shown how to solve it and how to smith certain weapons that I was missing, I was in disbelief at the fact that I did not figure those out on my own either (My younger brother did though) as it was so easy yet the outrageously difficult book order part earlier on, even though it took me frackin forever, I got through it... Guess I was just overthinking things with those easy ones, who knows, lolz :)
I always liked how this game sort of branched off into paper Mario and also Mario and Luigi, we got to see 2 different takes on Mario rpgs with the same roots
@SonicmaniaVideos They're talking about the games themselves, not the developers. Officially, the Paper Mario series and the Mario & Luigi series are completely separate from Super Mario RPG. They aren't considered spin-offs or sequels to it, so yeah, saying that they "sort of" branched off from it is correct, even if many of the developers remained the same.
@@alfiehicks1 I never said those games were sequels to the original. But since they are made by the same people they also aren't "completely unrelated" or whatever you're trying to correct me on.
@SonicmaniaVideos As series, they *are* completely unrelated. Nothing in either of the latter two series narratively builds upon anything set up in Mario RPG. They are mechanically and thematically similar in many ways, but that does not make them sequels to it. Your original comment heavily implies that it is incorrect to say that they "sort of" branched off from Mario RPG, and so I can reasonably assume that you intend to claim that they *literally* branched off from Mario RPG, which is simply not the case.
When the first green square showed up on screen, I wasn't ready. When you said "I'll do it again", I managed to do it perfectly first try. Likely by complete chance, but I still cackled until my face turned red. I love cosmic humor. Also the Geno sprite with Peach's palette looks pretty cool. I could see it as a sort of Sheik situation to be honest.
Really good video! I'm kind of surprised you didn't bring up the fact that there's data left in the game that suggests another party member was planned. I'd love to see them bring back whatever they had planned for that in the remake. Johnny would make a really good new party member...
I always assumed b'tub ring was short for bathtub ring, the vexing household cleanliness problem that used to be a bit more common. Its random use here might just be a whimsical example of the "___ ring" pattern, especially if it has to be a bit cleaner than love-love ring, and there's probably some heavy tub action in Marrymore, so why not? (And semi-related: no mention of Peach's XXX/Toadstool's ??? in region differences?)
B'tub Ring is short for bathtub ring, idk why Cyber missed that memo. Back in 1994 video game translation teams had to be very conservative about making references to "Love" in order to conform to the ESRB, so I guess someone in a writers room was like "Uhhh what do we do with this" and the first suggestion that came to someone's mind was "Bathtub! Because that's a thing couples do right, they... share a... bathtub?" and first dude's like FUCKIN GENIUS LET'S ROLL WITH IT. Strangely enough, the abbreviation "B'tub" seems completely unnecessary, since the fixed-width font of SMRPG supports 12 characters, exactly the proper amount to spell out Bathtub Ring. There are even plenty of other items in the game which use this fully, so it's probably just done to further obfuscate what this ring is really supposed to mean for that coveted E for Everyone rating.
@@wesshiflet2214 I mean, the part about the writers room discussion was a joke, but the rest of it is true. TBH even today, nearly 20 years later, it’s still a constant struggle between video game localization teams and the ESRB. The Japanese get away with putting a lot more risqué stuff into their games than we get to see in the West.
I think the English translators had to translate the sprites without any context from the Japanese developers, which is why the "B[ath]tub Ring" is named that; it looks like a pool floatie. This could also be why Exor's mouth is called the "Neosquid" with no explaination. The sprite, when isolated from Exor's model, does kinda look like a squid
"B'tub Ring" is still a stupid name, though. "Pool Float" uses the same amount of characters and actually makes sense. Nobody uses an inflatable ring in the fuckkin bathtub.
...Why would the name of the ring be translated based on its appearance, when _there's no equipment icons?_ I mean yes, renders exist in Japanese supplemental materials, but would the translators have had access to those?

There's a great writeup on Legends of Localization about the Japanese versions of the psychopath messages. Lots of pop culture references. It'll be really interesting to see how much of this stuff carries over to the remake.
I never got the Super Suit either, but it's because jump 97 onward shrinks the window even further IIRC. 3-frame links aren't bad in fighters: I played Dan in SF4 and one of his most useful links was 3 frames. But tighter than that and I flounder, and for Super Jump, it was always at 97.

I work as an employee for the Kame Yu department stores, and I get home every day by 8 PM at the latest. I don't smoke, but I occasionally drink. I'm in bed by 11 PM, and make sure I get eight hours of sleep, no matter what. After having a glass of warm milk and doing about twenty minutes of stretches before going to bed, I usually have no problems sleeping until morning. Just like a baby, I wake up without any fatigue or stress in the morning. I was told there were no issues at my last check-up. I'm trying to explain that I'm a person who wishes to live a very quiet life. I take care not to trouble myself with any enemies, like winning and losing, that would cause me to lose sleep at night. That is how I deal with society, and I know that is what brings me happiness. Although, if I were to fight I wouldn't lose to anyone.

It's so nice to just listen to you rambling about weird stuff in games. I especially like it when you talk about a bit more obscure games like space station silicon Valley.
Funny enough I knew most of these from an old lets player who went out of his way to do 110% over a decade ago. And the few things I learned from you though was; red essence is related to yoshi-aid, in combat bonus flowers are enemy specific, there's an 8th snifit apprentice, and geno was originally going to have a sword instead of a gun.
That secret code is different in the English version but that same cutscene absolutely can be found. Don't remember the exact code but it's something similar
One secret not mentioned in this video... It's a little stupid easy glitch too.. or I guess it's a bug... But you can get any star in the game multiple times in a row leveling up your cast on any version of the game... If I recall you just need to save the game at a save block... get a star... Like the one at the sunken ship or the volcano... Kill as many enemies as you can except for one... Which you keep alive to give yourself a game over... When you show up back at the save point you're casts Exp. and Lvl. will stay from before you died and the star and enemies will be back...
The reset with Start+Select+R+L is actually common knowledge and was used on almost (or all of them?) games from Square at that time. Also the Geno Whirl work also on the calamari tentacles from the sunken ship and Yaridovich. You didn't know that, right?
I thought that was just a SNES reset thing? I remember some games required you to reset in this manner to activate certain cheats. Of course, my memory might be broken so I’m prepared to be wrong about this.
Since you're talking about glitches, you missed one. It's actually possible to kill the chefs on the cake fight at Merrymore. If you kill one or both of them and then progress the fight as normal, the game soft locks because the chefs aren't there to play the cutscene out when the cake frightens them off.
I always thought a lot of people knew about start select L and R for reset. I thought I remembered as a kid there were many SNES games that let you reset that way, but maybe it was just Mario RPG.
(Spoilers for later on in the video since I've had this happen to me) I loved that sponsorship fakeout. I was so ready to skip it. Thank you for being one of the most consistently funny channels I've watched, even with the policy changes
Well, I think you will love it, and if you are not a retro gamer, well good news because they are making a remake of it that will be out on the 17th of november. You can preorder digital and physical copies of the game (Although the physical ones are harder to come by). They are selling like hotcakes, so if you want a physical copy I would recommend looking for one ASAP :)
That L + R + select + start to reset the game was actually pretty common amongst Super Nintendo games. I figured it out because one day I was button mashing out of frustration and the game restart. Pretty sure that was Secret of Mana.
I imagine the Yaridovich Drill Bit minions were designed before the seaside events. once the imposter toads scenario was created, there was no longer a need for the Drill Bit minions.
The reason the Spin shoes work to damage spikey enemies with a jump is because the spin jump in Mario World allows Mario to hop on spiked enemies
Ok mind=blown.
Same as Mario & Luigi Superstar saga with the advanced Splash Bros move, actually dealing extra damage to spiky enemies and trivializing the Queen Bean fight.

The Fireworks pattern at the end is a reference to Super Mario Brothers 3.

By exploiting this feature I once made a save file where Mario starts the game at Mario's pad (the earliest point you can save) at level 27, making the entire game a complete massacre.
...oh dear lord, that sounds hilarious and terrifying lol
XP grinding in this fashion is best done with the star, either in the Sea or Land's End. I've done it in every playthrough.
This is what the comment above mine is referring to, albeit I have fleshed it out and explained it a little more.
is it still like that in the remake?

100 jumps in a row @29:58 is something else all together. For those who have never attempted it, it becomes physically and mentally taxing. After awhile, you begin to loose count of your jumps, "how much further, how much longer!" You become aware of your physical state, "I haven't blinked for awhile, I need to blink..." but blinking is a risk to your perfect timing.

I hope they take that part out of the remake. It's straight up bad design.

It's possible that this video was being edited while the first person in human history finally asked "What's with that Mushroom in Monstro Town?"
The Sheep Attack can be used on Machine Made Yaridovich, but I think it only works after he splits up.
No breaks? Labor standards are harsh in the Mushroom Kingdom!
The Monstro Town Mushroom is a more obvious fake in the remake, since items stack there and the two Mushroom types go in different stacks. It's also actually useful, since it can be used for out-of-battle recovery without inflicting Mushroom status.

These are more like observations than anything, but there’s two things I caught on while playing the game regarding the party members’ sprites:
First is that during battle, the little HP windows showing each of the characters’ health use said character’s diagonally downward facing sprites for the portrait, but the exception to that is Peach, the portrait for her HP window is entirely unique! I wonder of there’s a full body sprite of it in the code somewhere…
Second is that every character has sprites for getting hit, which on the overworld are repurposed for when said characters are surprised by something, and the overworld is the only way you can see the diagonally downward facing surprised sprites for the characters… except for Geno, as there isn’t a single scene where he gets surprised by something while facing downwards (again, I wonder if that sprite even exists…). Also an addendum, this is almost true for his angry sprite too, but you can see it in the second Belome fight, where a Geno Clone will use it if he casts Flame Stone.
3:18 This part is just absolute perfection.
Very Cool Reference
This game's length and difficulty were perfect for the age we were when it came out. People just always need to find the negatives in something (myself included), it's just the type of workd we live in.
I think it's the perfect length as well. I wouldn't MIND a little extra content in the remake but I'm fine either way.
The Muku item costing 69 coins and healing you for 69 health is probably because his name is made of characters that can be read as 6 and 9 in Japanese goroawase.
6 can be read as "muttsu" or "mu" and 9 can be read as "kyu" or "ku". So MuKu.

The fact that Lakitu isn't a japanese character name is the most shocking thing in this video
That and Cybershell pronounced it wrong on top of that.

Bowyers name isn't just because he's a bow. A bowyer is the word for someone who makes wait for it....bows.

For Muku Cookies, the reason they heal for 69 health is because in Japanese it can be read as 6 (Mu) and 9 (Ku).

Never even played Super Mario RPG but the fact that it was a new Cybershell video was enough for me to watch it all. Not many creators can do that.
I would watch him watch grass grow
For that matter, play it! It's great :)
Damn, I didn't know the super jump timing was so tight... I did it as a kid judging it based on visual queues. I don't even remember it taking too long and the "do something a lot of times" thing in games I always considered annoying was dodging the lightning in FFX.
yes
Visual queues? Man, I think I was more able to do it by not looking and just using timing and sound.
@@fallouthirteen If I recall the sound of the jump landing was slightly too late and it was Mario landing in a specific position I used.
@@7Zealot it's because the timing actually shifts based on the enemies' idle animation, which is even more devious
When I learned the timing for Psychopath as a kid, I would always always use it when I found a new enemy or boss. It was also one of the few SNES games I owned as a kid, so I replayed it a lot.
I hope they make the Super Suit easier to get in the remake... 100 jumps is beyond nuts
If it's easier to get, then Super Jump would be beyond OP.

Usually I go into these videos expecting to know everything already. But you were right, there was a lot here I didn’t know about which is refreshing
Not surprising when you're stuck between two pipes...
whats the urban yetti guy doing here
You mentioned Tomato, he did an interesting breakdown on his Legends of Localization blog about the weird Psychopath quotes.
Also some huge references that any japanese kid of the day would recognize. It quotes Sailor Moon and Evangelion, for pete's sake.
I'm not sure telling someone not to blink will be very helpful lol
Very interesting to hear that you found some enemies easier. Maybe it has to do with their positions on the screen? I think that's the only thing that could change the timing.
The lore master descends once more to gift us a new video, and I am grateful
Thank you for finally making me feel better about the 100 jumps! I remember feeling dumb for how many years and playthroughs it took just for me to find and get into the Grate Guy casino.
Hey yeah, losts of people really seen to struggle with the 100 jumps and I think that really close to all of the times, it's the SuperSuit that would cause gamers to enter the padded room. ANyways, I recently posted a video on my homepage of me performing the 100 jumps and in the vidz description I give some tips that worked for me in regards to making it easier. Anyways, I am rarely one to ask for help for anything on games and have hardly ever gone to the net either, but the Great Guy casino one, join the club, lolz.
And by "sort of" you mean...the dev teams behind both of those series straight up came from that game.
@@SonicmaniaVideos i imagine thats what they meant with "the same roots"
That would be sweet :)
@@CenturyBladeis this actually confirmed or just headcanon
@@wesshiflet2214 I mean, the part about the writers room discussion was a joke, but the rest of it is true. I can’t believe this video was posted a year ago. It legit feels like it was like 2 months ago.
I actually think it could be a really shitty attempt at writing out a heartbeat sound.
I thought there were no sprites? The pictures are from the Japanese manual, not the game
...Why would the name of the ring be translated based on its appearance, when _there's no equipment icons?_
I mean yes, renders exist in Japanese supplemental materials, but would the translators have had access to those?

I managed to get the super suit as a kid! I think I got 113 or something but it was just a bit over 100. It was during my second or third playthrough (loved this game as a kid) and I scored it on one of the axem Rangers. My heart was pounding as I knew what I had just accomplished. I don't even recall what the super suit even does, I just know that I am one of the select few who managed to pull this off. A memory I will cherish forever! I also somehow knew about the missable frog coin chest by jumping off the toad. Not sure how, maybe I tried it on one of my playthroughs because there's a pin I think you can wear that beeps when there's a hidden chest upon entering a room and it was driving me nuts that it would go off in the castle.

Mario RPG is one of those games I’ve beaten like 4 times and every time it makes me very aware of how much secret shit is in the game.
That secret code is different in the English version but that same cutscene absolutely can be found. Don't remember the exact code but it's something similar
You are one of my favorite RUclipsrs. No matter how sporadic or long you take between videos they always deliver
Don't think its a bug, more of an oversight due to how gameovers work. but I guess you could stretch it into being a bug lol
Super Mario RPG also holds a very special place in my heart, as it was not only my first RPG game, it was the first video game I had ever played!
