The gathering gets way easier once you get t2 axe and pickaxe and start leveling the appropriate skill. Each hit from my pickaxe does like 15-18 damage to Jotun blood and rocks.
And with 22 villagers the only thing I really need to farm manually is Jotun blood. When the bear attack finally came it was almost a meme. A swarm of 20 villagers hitting him in the front and me behind pounding his ass. Didn't lose a single building or villager.
So far I love the core game. It just needs more of everything. More craftable gear progression, more enemy types, more bosses.
Edit: I do actually have one complaint and it's that multiplayer is peer hosted coop only. No dedicated server. And i actually thought about it and this game really wouldn't work on a dedicated server because as you mentioned in this video, the survival is actually survival. Between blood moons, bear attacks, and just existing during winter, your entire base would be wiped before you logged in the next day. Just sucks because you have ti wait for the host to be able to play. Otherwise everyone has ti start a second single player game for when the host isn't online.

They could stop the time when nobody is online. Most games actually do that.

A survival game where you can actually loose, and without management will just crumble, is hella refreshing. The only thing that came somewhere near it is when an Alpha Dino spawns in or near your base in Ark Survival Evolved and you hadn't had high tech gear yet.

Agreed. After getting burned by six early access games, I will no longer buy one. Let the Devs finish their vision of what they plan to sell, and if I like what they've done, then I'll buy it. For now a big turn off is a stamina for harvesting, it's already a time sink of it's own, adding a exhaustion element to harvesting is unnecessary and adds nothing to the enjoyment.

I've spent 38 total hours. I think it's a great game provided you know how to manage your resources well and plan early what you need around you. My first account I ditched after around 10hrs because my surroundings prevented my village from growing and the resources I needed wasn't near. Not to mention accidentally placing my camp super close to an enemy base/spawn point. Still made it past winter one but resources started dwindling. Second file one is good so far, almost winter 2. I spent around 3 game days to find a perfect spot to plop my village down. Not perfect but works better.
I'm playing on controller and it's frustrating here and there (accidentally eating stuff esp raw stuff). Some of the menus are terrible/clunky with controller too. Villager automation is pretty good EXCEPT warehouse workers keep taking everything from the cooking house/crafting house, which makes it terribly hard to craft (esp the weapons/tools). And the limiting large item lugging (pro tip use sleds/carts to pack mule better)
I'm not exactly sure how to assign people to the patrol routes, but been working pretty good. As long as my gathering people move around the enemy bases.
I really like the game so far at almost 40hrs solo playing. I'm about to hit the game throwing magic mumbo jumbo to test my village (invasion). I've dealt with the bear (terrible but doable as long as you have lots of warriors), hoping multiple warriors+archers helps.

  • @Lone_GamerUK

Seem's like is they reduce the early wear, amount of hits to gather, have better base defences or less punishment (no one likes 20hrs of work gone in a mechanic you cannot stop) & some more individual building creations & some better world content it be far better.
I worry then this is too much of a gather resources rinse in repeat (I love management ideas but if there broken AI, limited effects to stop disaster is undose the management gameplay you hope is a bonus). i.e. are people playing behind hour 20 or houtr 50 etc?
Be interesting to see how it develops.

Tried it, found it needs a lot more cooking time in development, alas I refunded it at this time and will give it another 12 months and if it looks like its moving in the right direction will jump back in. But as it stands atm, I recommend people wait a little longer. Has potential, but its a long way to go yet.

Sounds like the only things missing are:
Re-population Mechanic - i.e. No babymakers to make up for lost villagers.
Proper Fortifications - i.e. No Walls or Gates or Spades.
AI Routines need a good Revamp - i.e. More In-depth Orders or Jobs to help manage both the Village and the People.
Example, Guards for those going to gather Materials.
for now all I can think of.

There are fences but they require a very high amount of resources. Playing alone, you will need the first 10-20h to evolve a self sustaining infrastructure, with barely someone around to help building. After this you can "effort" someone to help with building tasks. Multiplayer really cuts that time down drastically

I think Soulmask is the best Valheim Spiritual Successor. The building, combat and exploration is top notch, plus you can also tweak your experience with settings that are for casual or hardcore players. Also wIth the added tribe management that I think is the best in survival gaming.
Aska might come close once they add a ship building and ship combat. With procedural islands to explore like in valheim. But for now, its quite barebones in comparison to Soulmask.

Is Aska better than Valheim? I wouldn't even compare these two. Valheim doesn't really feel like survival game since you don't die because of hunger and thirst, more like action rpg. In Valheim you gather everything yourself and in Aksa you order villagers to do all tasks. Mostly problem is to find the most suitable villager for the task since perks are random. Valheim is already a masterpiece and gives clear progression curve, while Aska still needs lots of work doing that. In Aska we have 5 bosses that are a bit of joke. After second winter we got basic clothes and iron axes and just cut through them. There are no indication which order you should kill them, but doesn't matter much. We had wolf den right next to our village and that provided excellent food source, when we ordered one villager to patrol the are at night that killed them and hunter gathered meats. Bear...just hit once and roll away, repeat. Great food source also...

Well both are still lacking but peoples asking for horse in bellwright to the dev and it be confirmed bellwright will get more future update even the dev are know to always just take off with the money for their last two game and ditch. Aska still stay The previous system updates, which we know well, were primarily designed before the release of Unreal Engine 5 lastest update and the advent of advanced AI. As a result, many games missed out on incorporating cutting-edge elements that could enhance their visual appeal, functionality, and creativity. Aska do have better AI npc.

Did you place patrol flags at the perimeter of your camp or so? So far my barracks have been working great (I've only lost 1 villager, an archer got attacked by multiple undead).
I think your issue with woodworker is also bc of no flag. The woodworkers/stone workers don't wander too far from the perimeter of the structures/flags that you see in the map.
I found that fishing (esp salmon) is the best start point so far. I only gathered berries to make bait. Not sure what fisherman's hut does so jumping fish that easy to reach is ideal. The fish is finiyer per year.
Clothing isn't needed as long as you have multiple covered campfires maintained (including the cooking house) and lots of firewood stocked (warehouse+furniture). Almost to year 2 and no clothes yet. Kinda wish that the game seasons where a little longer.
Also for fighting, you can use your tools. I've been using the 2nd level axe for fighting. All weapons go to my barracks with their different job classes. I think your wood cutting or w/e leveled skill helps with the damage. And it's still considered melee leveling when you battle with them.
I hope they fix the controller play (I can't figure out what sprint is on ps4 controller other than selecting trees) and the manual ground leveling with the hoe since so much of the better village locations are hilly areas. I actually think the game has a great survival experience. Will see when I hit the invasion event.

Grindy for the sake of being grindy is a big fat "NO". And seriously, stamina use on gathering is unnecessary. Nothing like standing around waiting on your stamina bar to fill just to deplete it again a few more times, just so you can gather a few sticks and stones.. Or make the stamina cost way less on harvesting. If they are trying to discourage people from using lower tiers of tools, then just make the resources unable to be harvested by lower tiers.. Give them an error message saying "Too Hard" or "Requires Iron Tools".. Or do it like Ark Survival and give way less materials.

It’s a shame the building is so limited. This game seems like a cross between Valheim and Medieval Dynasty, which sounds really fun, buuuuut if you can’t be creative with your builds then I feel like the game will get so boring so fast. I had that issue with Medieval Dynasty- it’s helpful that you can choose where windows and doors go on some buildings, but it’s not enough to keep the game fun.
