Prince turning down a role because the costume design was "too effeminate" is like Schwarzenegger turning down a role because the character was too masculine.
And to think a more masculine man took the role and put on those costumes.
Prince was overrated, I never been a fan.
We all make mistakes, lol. But honestly, I cannot see anyone else doing that part but Chris Tucker

Besson actually wrote around ten Corbin Dallas stories, with this one being roughly in the middle of the arc. However he's yet to pull a Lucas and do the prequels or the sequels.

Prince would have been interesting, but there's no way he would have let himself cut that loose. Tucker is LEGEND!!

Dang....i haven't seen this movie since i was a teenager but seeing that hero and villain never meet is mind blowing to me now.
It actually made every trope of every action sci-fi movie turn on it's head. Their "clash" is more about the consequences of their actions rather than being reactionary with each other.

My father was in the ICU in February with massive Delerium and Dementia at night. I left an iPad with him when he finally got to sleep one night with this movie ready to play and when I came back in the morning he was so stoked - knew it was me, knew it was his favorite, wanted to watch it again.
That hurts the feels. Glad he could remember it!

What amazes me most, is how Luc Bessons previous work, The Professional, was a down to earth, heartfilled, emotional, realistic, impactful drama and his next movie was this.
Easily one of the best sci-fi movies ever made: It takes itself seriously enough to have real drama and heart, but doesn't take itself too seriously to avoid bogging down in its darker themes.
I loved this movie, my date walked out of it & I stayed. That was a good choice 😂

It never aimed to be larger than life or took itself too seriously, it is amazingly fun and memorable and that is something to be grateful for. And Chris Tucker´s performance killed it.

@mickor: I'm pretty sure it was just Sarah Brightman plus some autotune. You can hear the autotune very clearly in the soundtrack version of the song, which doesn't have all the background noise from the movie.

_The Fifth Element_ was an _awesome_ movie; a _textbook_ example of the kind of thing that typified the late '90's, when awesome movies happened because people focused on making awesome movies instead of launching or carrying on franchises.
It's insane how much the movie predicted pod casts and live streaming and the wild androgynous youtube stars now, man this movie was so ahead of it's time

I love this movie for many reasons, particularly Gary Oldman. Years after watching it (and a bunch of other genre movies) the day I found out that Gordon from the Dark Knight Trilogy, Sirius Black from Harry Potter, and Zorg were the same person my mind was completely BLOWN.
And Dracula, who, by the way, looks way more like I imagined Sirius than Sirius does 😂
And to think he didn't wanna do the role because he disliked it, but did it anyway because he was friend of Besson. Remember that Gary was the villain in Léon, too.
Oldman just vanishes into the character he plays. Half the time I need the credits to know it was him.
Milla Jovovich was adorable in this movie.

Fifth Element and Galaxy Quest are tied for my favorite films of all time. They *never* get old for me! :D
Galaxy quest is another underrated gem. I am no Trekker, but I know enough of the tropes to have gotten maximum enjoyment of the movie!

It's remarkable how often this is used in the movie but is subtle enough to not get too obvious either... it's like watching the movie for the first time again after you notice!

Supposedly, his character is based off an actual person who had a club in Dallas called the Ruby Room.
The "guy in the hallway" is actually a cameo by the French actor and director Mathieu Kassovitz who won the best director at Cannes for "La Haine". Also well known for his role in Amélie Poulain.

I used to enjoy this one online critic, and when The 5th Element came out, I sent him an email asking what he thought of it. My email included my enthusiasm for the movie (he didn't read my "review" until after he'd come to his own conclusions).
His response was along the lines of "Someday you'll be mature enough to realize how much this movie sucks."
...which basically killed all my enthusiasm.
But, every time I've seen the movie since that point, I've been like "this is so cool! I mean some of the parts are weird, but it's a lot of fun and these characters are interesting and the actors are good and it's colorful and has interesting worldbuild and there are parts where all sorts of related things happen at once and" etc. etc. I've never gotten to the point of not enjoying it.
I don't know if I'd feel differently if I'd seen all the movies this was parodying/copying/whatever, or if I'd seen more than a couple Bruce Willis films in general, but it seems like a good movie and I don't know why that guy hated it so much.
This is the greatest Sci Fi of all time. Critics like to bash on movies to make themselves look 'intellectual' even when they miss the entire point of the movie. The theme, word building, character development and backstory are all on point. This movie knows its a stylized quirky dystopian future thrill ride and runs it off the rails 110%.

He probably only watches "real" dramas depicting the nihilistic angst of the human condition and doesn't have the soul or imagination to just enjoy the ride for what it is.
Poor unfortunate soul; we should feel sorry for his limited existence.
I don't know if this is true about your critic, but I remember that back when the film came out, many American critics & viewers failed to see that this film is part satire - satire both on modern American society & on certain US genre films. One line I remember in particular complained that Chris Tucker's character is over-the-top - when the whole point was that he is insufferably over-the-top.
Roger Ebert gave it three stars, and a thumbs up. So there's that.

Indirectly, of course, a lot (after all Gary Oldman sends all his henchman to kill Bruce Willis, for example). But never directly. Which was a great subversion of expectations.
@@leovk5779 You're right it showed how one properly subversives expectations which is unfortunately apparently something people can't properly do anymore. Which is why so many older movies are way better than anything anyone makes anymore.

The subtitle "Episode IV: A New Hope" wasn't added until after "Empire" came out four years later. No one really calls the first movie "A New Hope" or "Episode IV" really, do they? It's just "Star Wars."
