    • @Gertyutz
      @Gertyutz 5 месяцев назад +33

      Every animal can communicate, but Koko was different because she learned human language, that certain motions represent certain words. A cat can communicate, but she doesn't have different sounds or motions for "building," "ball" or "grass." Gorillas and chimps are unique.

    • @heymartine8818
      @heymartine8818 5 месяцев назад +9

      @@GertyutzDogs and Cats (some breeds better than others) can understand specific words and motions and what their meaning is, they just don’t have the physical capability to communicate it to us the same way. Though there is one workaround this using buttons that have individual words that are played when pressed. It’s a lot to do with how much effort and money (those button system usually aren’t cheap and the more your pet learns the more buttons you’ll need and the more expensive it is) you are willing to put into your pet.
      I don’t want to take away from how amazing Koko was, but she most likely wasn’t close to fluent in “human language” and she was probably closer to how our smartest dogs and cats can be with buttons just with the extra of being able to fully communicate it without having any form of assistance.

      @Shàñkš Humans are scientifically classified as mammals (mammalia), that class belongs to the kingdom of animals (animalia), we are by definition animals, evolution made us slowly use our brains to think and do specific tasks, we are what we are now but it doesn't mean we aren't animals.
      It has been proven times and times again that animals have emotions when a family member dies or when something bad happens, dogs for exemple do show some guilt when they do something bad, monkeys and gorillas have also proven to use low level tools suchs as sticks and other to ease the openning of foods and others.
      I'm not here to yell at you, I'm here to inform you, you may have not knew about that but now, you can't say you don't know anymore.

    • @keshavleitan7800
      @keshavleitan7800 4 года назад +12

      @Shàñkš definitely animals can think and it's not just instinct. We also evolved from apes and monkeys, we share 92% of a gorillas genome, Which has strong evidence that we are related to them. Heres a way to look at it. All proteins and growth in animals are controlled by DNA, in humans it's the same. Furthermore you dont know if the earliest of humans were as smart as us. So you cannot come to the conclusion that we are unique. It is over time that we evolved to developed intelligence. And so far the theory of evolution is the most reasonable and logical theory to explain life. You may think we know right and wrong but so do animals, it's just that their wrongs and our wrongs are different. And by the way I not an atheist, I'm a Christian.

I read her signing as clearly as the signing of my deaf friends and my son. I was floored by the reality that she knows what she signs. @ToneysReviews 4 года назад +12

      @Emily C I am not spreading any type of misinformation, lol. You can literally see articles among articles debunking this.
      This "communicating" level she showed was no higher than a crow saying hello. She had basic/trained commands. Hello, Goodbye, and etc. She could not and never showed an ability to carry on a conversation.
      Emily stop trying to make something that doesn't exist.

    • @ToneysReviews
      @ToneysReviews 4 года назад +15

      @Emily C This is a quite simple task, all it requires is typing into Google.
      Koko made the wrong signs on multiple occasions and not only that would randomly sign "nipple" all of the time. In many cases where Koko was doing the wrong thing her care takers would run up to her to correct it asap.
      The fact is, she could not speak. "Why is she showing her trainer what she wants using gestures", lol. Why does a dog push an empty bowl to its owners feet when it's hungry? These are simple association tactics that all animals use. Did she show the ability to recall and remember things, yes. However, this is not speaking.
      Let me ask you this, since you think she was so smart, then why is it that they never taught her how to spell? Her hand works the same as yours and mine. Why is it that when random people would ask her questions she was unable to answer. Again, this has been debunked by many scientist.
      Now, keep lowering yourself and not realizing how special you are.

    R.I.P. Coco.. btw, if you're interested in intelligent apes, check out some footage of Bonobo monkeys, one of whom was taught to use a special electronic board with symbols to communicate.. but what's even more remarkable is how he was behaving almost like a human.. he could even get dry branches, pack them neatly, get the fire going and warm-up a marshmallow.. this particular Bonobo knew how to use certain tools, and once his daughter was born he started teaching her everything he knew (with a close eye from caretakers ofcourse, and with some encouragement..).. I wonder if intense training and teaching of male and female Bonobo's (or other ape groups) over ten or more generations would yield some results.. obviously selective breeding would have to be employed.. also perhaps introducing specific nutrients and vitamins that stimulate and develop the brain would also increase the chances of success.. I think over ten generations primary change would be behavioral, where apes would most definitively acquire heightened intelligence.. they probably could communicate with us via sign language or "symbols to words" kind of mechanism.. I wouldn't be overly surprised if at some point they would even start mimicking our words.. initially probably just "parroting", but over time, if they could associate certain sounds and words to actual things, they might try to emulate those sounds.. and even though evolution didn't "award" apes for complex verbal communication, I honestly believe that with the right training, with the right nutrition, with selective breeding and lots & lots of work and love, apes would at some point start expressing themselves through words, or at the very least their interpretation of those words.. obviously this would work only in this particular group, and it would be interesting to see how they would communicate with their own kind after all that time (obviously with all necessary precautions taken)..

      This is very interesting but I wonder if they started using words like us, how would they handle the language?

    • @san0saky
      @san0saky 5 месяцев назад +1

      @@averyj3428 I would assume that initially they would evolve similarly to us and our pre-Neanderthal ancestors.. I'm sure they already use certain sounds for communication, it's just that those sounds are very basic and most likely instinctual.. apes seem to have distinct sounds for when they're in pain or when they're angry, and most definitively when they're happy.. Hence I think if we would run a program where we select few different groups of apes that seem to display the most "intelligence".. run various cognitive tests and pick most promising adultescent chimps or bonobos.. also check which ones are most enthusiastic about learning.. once you've selected around 40 individuals (10 male and 30 female apes for genetic diversity) start a VERY robust training, although make it somewhat playful so that those apes would actually want to and like to learn.. introduce supplemental nutrition which would drastically improve brain development.. after 5 or so years of intense training start fertilizing females, and once the babies are born put them on the same nutrient supplements and even more active training.. also encourage parents to "teach" their offspring, so that when the "new batch" births their own offspring, they would start training them of their own accord.. obviously every generation most intelligent apes should be paired-up.. I think after 10 or so generations the results would be astonishing.. perhaps these new apes would start using not just sign language, but if trained correctly they might start using distinct sounds, or even combination of sounds to express themselves..
      Although all that said perhaps it's just a wishful thinking on my part, as it took humans hundreds of thousands of years to develope even the most basic "society".. I do wonder though what kind of event separated our earliest ancestors from other apes.. I'm sure that even after branching-out it took out ancestors a VERY long time to utter a cohesive word, let alone a sentence.. But then again there are these examples of apes like Coco, or those Bonobos that is quite surprising.. hence I'm curious if through nurture we could "speed-up", so to speak, evolution, or is it all down to nature taking its sweet time..

      I read an interesting article once, posing the theory that the evolution of human intelligence was given various steps up by the consumption of psychedelic plants that induced heightened states of consciousness. It could explain why this ancestral memory survived in symbolic form through stories like Adam and Eve learning how to tell good from evil after consuming a mind-altering plant. Intriguing thought.

    *Fun fact* : Koko was given a gray kitten for her birthday in July 1984 named 'All Ball', she treated the kitten like one of her own baby, nurturing it, carrying around and even trying to nurse it at one point. Unfortunately, All Ball died after hitting by a car, research said she later signed "Sleep. Cat"

    • @Silverhaired59
      @Silverhaired59 2 года назад +230

      She named it “All Ball” because the kitten’ tail was very short. Kook noticed that she was missing her tail, and gave her a name that distinguished the kitten from other cats. She was shaped like a ball, not a cat, so “All Ball.”

      emani donaldson there is precedence for skepticism. People can train elephants to paint paintings, and the trainers treat it like the elephant is creating a unique picture, even though it was specifically trained to make the same painting over and over, meaning it doesn’t actually understand the abstract art it is creating. Koko is definitely more convincing though. I haven’t looked into it enough to see if she really can communicate or if she is only making gestures from classical conditioning and treats. Hard to say, it is a fascinating idea though.

Or even earthworms for that matter, just because they do exactly what we can do, doesn't make them less in intelligence, sure we humans can do more than them & are much more evolved but that doesn't give us any right to make them any less of a life or categorise them intelligent only when they copy one of our behaviours(which honestly is just training of mimicry and as far as I know that's definitely not intelligence)
