It’s probably easier to say than to do but I find Abletons chance and midi generators too mathematical and not really musical. This is not a specific criticism of Ableton as I notice there are other plugins touting generative music creation and then you realise that it’s just an algorithm mathematically plonking stuff in the piano roll with no appreciation for genre or musicality. They could create a database of patterns and generate based off of that and then apply chance and other probability patterns and then I think it would be a far more useful tool as a jumping off point. Right now you use the tools and generate something that you end up having to tweak so much that you would have been better off making from scratch yourself
You know what, that’s a great point! It’s also what I meant by saying to skip generative tools unless you really struggle to come up with patterns. Both transform and gen tools are great but only if you have a solid foundation or an idea in mind. Guess that’s what all AI plugins try to do - generate actual ideas based on a database. Unfortunately I haven’t found any good ones or in a reasonable prices
Good points, but they are coming for sure…won’t be long until you can just do text to song generation and have a perfectly engineered jam in Ableton live 😂
The last sentence got me, I'm like "ok let me try Ableton's new midi tools" but then I'm like "fuck that, I'll write from scratch one by one" :D but they're fun though.
Your videos are always the very best. I'm eager to install the update. Please hope Ableton won't wait version 13 to bring more features that speed up the workflow and stimulates creativity. Cheers from Paris
Means a world 🙏 ngl I skipped a bit of things that can improve creativity with a deeper dive (for the purpose of making more videos 😂). No worries about new features tho - M4L developers are our saviors
Yeah... but sometimes I think: it's not all that the difficult to just learn how to play a few chords. You can learn the basics within 30 minutes. It'll boost you creativity beyond imagination and - generates - all by itself a high level of satisfaction and identity. You made it.
Just found your channel and really enjoying thus far! I'm happy about a good amount of offerings in Live 12. There are definitely more features that are useless for me personally than features that I will use. The changes are welcome. Since I play keys proficiently and know music theory 90% of the midi changes are useless haha. I have to admit, I do think it's strange that musicians that don't understand music are the norm now. It's like if an architect didn't understand angles, or an author needed a sentence and paragraph generator to write a story. In one sense it can be a tool for learning, in most cases it's just a crutch. I've got mixed feelings about it, but I always encourage everyone to learn, so hopefully people do! I really don't mean to be a dick, but it is something I do think about so I figured I'd share and hope to get other perspectives on.
Totally get your point. I find midi tools helpful for generating ideas while you stuck with inspiration. To be honest I got the beta a while ago and I used those MIDI tools heavily once - just for the purpose of making this video 😂
I love a lot of the midi stuff, but especially the probability options. I can have a the same midi chords, but randomize inversions at different plays. Definitely won't use all the new features, but I personally find them worth the hype (along with the new browser, mixer in arrangement, Meld and Roar, all of that)
Can I ask you a Ableton Live 12 question ? Do you have a second monitor setup for live ? Because, on my secondary monitor 2, the shortcut "E" in midi clip view dont work. The primær monitor 1, there is no problem with the shortcut "E" . Just to ask if you have experience that issue ? Regard Lars N @@Zdrewe
@larsb.nielsen4481 I don’t have a secondary monitor but the problem might be that in Live 12 you no longer need to use a separate widows or workflows for working with midi clips or mixer. Everything can be now viewed in one window (by choosing the preview in the down right corner). E shortcut is now responsible for cutting midi notes
OMG such a great video! I feel like this workflow tricks will help me a lot! :) Making stuff way to complicated for myself all the time... and asking myself afterwards: Why does this shi* not work together
3:55 it's two inversions for triads and three inversions for tetrads, and so on, different voicings built upon these inversions (which is what is happening with the M4L device I guess) don't characterize different types of inversions by themselves. It's a cool feature to have tho.
@@Zdrewedidn't mean to be annoying or picky, it's just me talking to the imaginary viewers that might be learning theory and got curious about what you meant there. I certainly would if it was me 10 years ago. Anyways, cheers!
@croay hahaha no worries bro, I don’t wanted it to sound like I’m laughing at you or something - I just pointed out that you’re definitely aware of the theory 🫡
Can you define ur own scale or does it have to the ableton presets? Or any way to make the bassline midi generation only use the same notes as the chord being played?
If you ask about chord pallete it can be used in any scale you can imagine. There are other tools to create basslines like Seed for example (which I’m gonna show in the next vid)
Umm, unless you know what feeling's you're after, and why, I'd suggest staying away from STARTING songs with Maj/Min 7th chords? Especially in major and harmonic minor keys. Why? Because the chord's 7th is only a half step from, and already wants to resolve to the root note of the key you're in. For example, the Am 7th note G# (7th in harmonic minor) strongly wants to resolve a half step to the root (A). For the most part, songs should be starting on roots, not resolving to them. Of course, if you know what you are after, 7ths can be used to start a piece with a lot of creative potential... but the experienced know that.
I picked up Chord pallette.. and even got the supporter version... but how do you load it into Live 12 MocOS? whats the file path to place the M4L device folder?
Had some issues with that at first but my fix was just to drag it to a folder with other M4L devices you have in your library and double click Chord Pallete Max 4 Live device
@@Zdrewe haha... thats funny, because I this is my first M4L device... I did what @Noldy__ suggested, and it shows up in places, but it says MIDI tools cannot be loaded as devices... I appreciate you taking your time to answer
Yeah I ranted about the price and upgrades too 😂 my hack is to get a copy of Lite version (usually included with any controller or interface) and then pay only for upgrade to Suite
My main issue is that 12 hardly had any new features meanwhile FL gave their users AI mastering, DistroKid distribution, new synths, a better splice alternative and stem separation in a simple .1 patch but Ableton somehow couldn’t get it together for their MAJOR upgrade? If it wasn’t for the fact that FL still doesn’t have MPE, I’d have switched by now
I need to agree with you to some extent. I think that Image Line did their research well and made FL suitable for “new generation” of producers. By “new” I don’t exactly mean the use of AI. Live is kinda still holding its legacy of being performance based and helping to create with hardware, real recordings (with all the new tuning options) and sound design. Not that it’s not a DAW like any other but it still feels a little bit indie compared to FL. And that’s why I love it so much.
These MIDI tools are an absolute waste of time. Everyone is impressed with what tech can do. But NO ONE in the music industry, no professional has ever written music using these tools. They just take you down a useless rabbit hole.

nice! on of the easiest explanation on how to use these efficiently
Based on the confusion due to endless possibilities I managed to discover while using them 😂 thanks!
I thought the same thing - Ableton 12 has simply moved things out of Max for Live into version 12 and charged for it.
agree

Have they added a feature where you can playback from a specific spot in piano roll

Just drag the chord pallet folder where your other M4L devices are and click on chord pallet file. It should install automatically

been on FL for 13 years, ive never had an 808 out of key
I can hear the fl users now: “the out of key 808 is an aesthetic choice!!!!!”
Well, it is… but to the point where it starts to make my ears bleed 😂

@Neiltrama1 lol as an og fl/reason--> ableton user , we really have no room to shit on FL while ignoring all the things Ableton dev neglects
