As a logic user, I'm jealous of the enveloppe follower plugin. But I like the general philosophy and that I can apply it to my DAW. Nice video, as usual. Love the smooth ending and everything before :D. Cheers.
Glad to have Logic user here, expected some FL guys coming for me 😂. Got my own short episode with it and it’s a great DAW. Did a quick search after your comment and I’m not sure if there’s really a free alternative of envelope follower in AU or even VST form. Pinning this comment so someone can correct me if I’m wrong
Atleast in studio one you can "sidechain" to almost any stock plugin. For example you could sidechain kick to EQ and modulate a certain frequency band. Maybe logic can do something similar?
Ableton is the best. They are a little slow to release new features but they take their time to get it right. I feel like FL Stuido rushes features out the door and ableton takes their time to get it right. Ableton is also programmed in C++ which is more stable and gives you better performance which means tighter sounding beats since the sound engine runs so close to the processor layer. The only hardware that sounds better than ableton is the ensoniq ASR 10.
couple things about ableton clipping. the glue compressors soft clip is closer to a digital clip, but instead of having sharp corners on the transfer curve, it has the tiniest round edges. saturators soft clip is a true rounded soft clip. but if you set it to digital clip, don’t turn on soft clip, and oversampling is turned off, it’s a true digital clipper, with less saturation. basically, you don’t have to turn on soft clip for it to actually clip the signal. if oversampling is turned off, it will clip the signal. enabling soft clip just adds more harmonics to that clip. the way saturators work is through clipping. clipping and saturation work the same way, just depends on what transfer curve you’re using
Thanks for the vid, love that Collision Sub Boom! And I agree 100% that native ableton stock plugins are all you need. But I gotta say, as much as I LOVE Roar, it's def not a replacement for Saturn. You can have up to 6 bands that all react with modulation control over insane amounts of oversampling. Roar can be used in mixing but its not nearly as flexible as a multiband saturator solution. Roar instead excels at being a really fun new tool for modulating saturation. If I had one with for it, it would be to have more than 2 stages in serial mode. Want that 3rd stage in there!
First of all, glad you like the video 🙏 judging by some comments I should’ve compared Roar to Izotope Trash but honestly I never been a big fan of it 😅. And yes you’re right, it’s definitely not a replacement, I assumed that some don’t have Saturn in their arsenal so Roar is a great introduction to plan and nail the multiband, parallel or serial distortion. As much as I’m proud and confident of what I said in this video, deep in my heart I can’t get rid of some of my fav plugins (Saturn included). But shhh don’t tell anyone 😉

I can’t say that there’s not gonna be a video about some paid plugins or gear on here but I’ll do my best to focus more on right decisions and tips rather than pitch selling everything that’s being released 😉

These are fine tips, it's just misleading to say you can replicate RBass in stock Ableton (or at least if you can, it's not like this)

Yeah, it’s not about stopping people from getting 3rd party plugins - it’s about picking them carefully while having stock devices in mind (majority of times they’re more than enough)
I agree. You can, and probably should, just use stock Ableton plugins. It would make for a more streamlined workflow and all of them pretty much are really high quality anyway. I don't really agree about the reverb but saying that I should note I never really found a software reverb that I really liked so this is a demerit point against both stock and third party reverbs in software. I wouldn't use either.
Hahah now I’m glad I said that’s my own opinion about HR. In fact, I feel the same way about third party reverbs. Majority comes down to shaping the tone after either with built in EQ or the one of you choice. That’s why I love HR and convolution reverb in Live since those allow you to turn anything into IR and get results fitted to your needs. If we speak about third party ones - Verbsuite Classic from Slate fits my needs from time to time

Excellent advice. After about a year of using Live Suite, I realized I wasted hundreds of dollars on plug-ins I didn't need. There's still a bunch of 3rd party software that I love using, but I find myself using Ableton's stock plug-ins more and more. I wish I could return most of what I bought in the beginning and buy some hardware... Great video!
Feeling exactly the same!! I gathered a lot of plugins through the years, managed to narrow down to only 150 which are currently in my library but honestly I use mainly my 3rd party synths and instrument libraries. Most of effects are easy to replace with stock devices unless you’re really looking for that analog (emulated) flavor
Excellent video, love the editing. And you're so right lol I had a shitload of plugins in the past. And now that I do it professionally, I basically use Cubase stock plugins 95% of the time.

The soft clipper in glue compressor and saturator does absolutely the same thing. In saturator's case it's just another succesive curve the signal is gonna be driven through. Theoretically by switching the saturator curve to digital clipping and enable soft clip you'll get the exact same result as using glue compressor. Saturator just gives you more choices in terms of clipping, including an analog one, a digital one and another successive soft clipper if you want.

I'm thinking of telling my sound engineer friend too, because he also has Ableton in his library, but also his ProTools system. He also considers all those old crap irons to be dust collectors, they just take up space. Some of them are 30-40 years old, they sizzle, they rattle, they have all sorts of problems. I tell him, if he puts it out in front of the house as a free takeaway, maybe a couple of weeks and he will get rid of them.
Just let me know where he lives, I’ll pull up and grab those dust collectors. Obviously I won’t use them as expected. I just have some free space on my desk. Neve? Don’t know this plugin company… is it new or something?
Amazing video as always! A lot of useful knowledge with a nice subtle sense of humour and great montage. Glad to hear more on ableton stock plugins, I feel like they get too little overall attention. I wish for a video on stock instruments! It would be awesome. There is so much to be said there, yet most tutorials don't go beyond samplers, analog, operator and wavetable :D
Glad you like the video (and my sense of humor 😂). Totally agree, stock plugins deserve more attention, only a few people actually utilize them for something unbelievable - just look at Virtual Riot. I’ll definitely do my take on stock synths, particularly Meld since it reminds me of MicroFreak
The convolution reverb sounds incredible but I've only been able to get it to work with instruments and have never been able to fit a vocal inside... Can't find any info on exactly how to use it.
As a developer of a cool host plugin that lets you play with all your plugins in unique ways, we hope you don’t delete all your plugins-ins. Also nothing else sounds like Valhalla reverb. Nothing sounds like R-Bass or OTT either. There are mountains of code behind all these plugins-ins and thus why nothing else sounds like they do. Find your sound, be unique and enjoy the adventure. Cutting off body parts just to cut off body parts limits the fun you can have, in my opinion. Also not cheap if you have 800 plug-ins like many of our customers!
The only thing I really hate about Ableton's plug-ins is that I can't keep them floating on the screen while I zip around track to track. Other than that they're sick. My favourite one is tha compressor called, "Flattener."
You too?? 😂 I mean for the workflow is kinda convenient to have plugins at the bottom of the screen but once you want to make a screen recording (like myself) you end up cutting the footage, cropping or zooming in like crazy 😂
I swear the first time I tried out Roar on an Offbeat Bassline I was blown away by its capabilities. It might also be a decent alternative to Izotope Trash 2 finally.
Really, really appreciate that! And well, what I can say - that’s the beauty of Ableton (and any DAW tbh). Once you find some time to dive into details, you always discover something new 😉
My dream is that one day Ableton will have a way to use modulators like Bitwig, (of course you can create similar things, but in Bitwig it's something that becomes fun and intuitive) but even so, Ableton is my primary daw, because it's really powerful when you combine the tools
100% agree. Funny thing is that I started to get more and more familiar with Bitwig tools due to some similar comments and well... those are the only thing I would add to make Live more powerful. As you said, you can trick the system by using M4L devices for that but still, it would be awesome to have those things stock.
I'm fully aware Soothe2 is just lazy EQ but i love it to death because it helps me be lazy! 😝 With that said i try to use mostly stock plugins so great video!
wow! I just found your channel and your editing is really funny and paced excellently. tips are great too! loved the bit that poked fun at folks who obsess over specific compressors when they should just be making music! also I totally agree about OTT! why are people using the third party OTT instead of just OTT?? lol very underrated I'm glad I found this video
Means a world 🙏🙏 and well to the compressors part - that’s exactly what I’ve meant. It’s not that you can’t be obsessed with different characters but at least know how to compress 😂
@@Zdreweyeah for sure! I find those tiny details in things like subtle compressor characteristics and all that rarely can be heard in a meaningful way in a full mix (although it depends on the style)
Great input as always! I can't wait for "roar", it looks really promising and seems quite intuitive compared to saturn, which I found a bit crowded and confusing first. I love the youtube videos as you can explain everything in much more detail! Also the editing is on point, the bathroom scene really made my day 😂Keep up the good work!
Agree, Saturn seems a bit crowded but wait until you get your hands on mod matrix in Roar. It can also get quite detailed, geeky aaaand… crowded. I barely scratched the surface in this vid. For the bathroom part - well my assumptions were based on my own experience 😂 Thanks a lot for your support 🙏
bar from a few exceptions I work out of the box unless I am recording outboard gear The plugins I do use are things like Serum, Valhalla and some of the NI ecosystem I purchased a decade ago. There is a whole lot of sausage phat out there
Staying with what you have or narrowing down to what you really need gets us far more creative and to the point. Obviously there are some cool new things to try but using the things I’ve mentioned earlier plus a range of stock devices is a great crap-filter
Correct but not exactly. It’s more of a dynamic eq like Fab Filter. Compression gives more control like ratio and knee. With Envelope Follower you can only control “attack” and “release” by adjusting rise and fall parameters
@@Zdrewe Am I missing something? You put the envelope follower/EQ on the bass, right? Did you sidechain it to the kick and I missed it? (Also, dynamic EQ can be done on the free TDR Nova plugin and I think on the sidechain of the Ableton stock compressor if you pick an EQ curve. No?)
I also prefer stock devices in a lot areas. Sometime they have even big advantages, because Live doesn't compensate latency for the host transport information, tools like VolumeShaper 2/3, LFO Tool etc. which syncing to transport will be out of sync if you place a linear phase EQ or any other stuff that introduces latency, in front of them, while Lives own Shaper device is compensated. Then there is Push, having a device to control software synths like hardware is also an advantage. In the most cases for me third party tools are more about how things can be done and not what can be done. Technically Synplant 2 is not a very complex synth, but the way how i create sounds with Genopatch and its seed system, is a selling point for me, because its simply fun. Before buying stuff you should be question yourself if a third party tool does something Live can't do and if Live can do the same, is it too complicate for me to realize this with Live tools? ..do i like the workflow? ...do i understand whats exactly the point of wanting a certain plugin?
It’s exactly what I had in mind while making this video! I have nothing against third party plugins and in fact I have a lot of them but I’ll save myself a lot of time and money if I would rather appreciate the value behind stock plugins instead of trying to chase trends or advices
It’s interesting to see the market for used plugins. People would rather pay full price for a “new” one, despite it literally being an email attached download. If trust in the market existed, one could sell virtual for 50% of our cost after realizing we maybe don’t use/love specific plugins… but I guess in the current world, we just stockpile them over time 😅
Great idea actually! Obviously you can transfer a license and technically sell a “second hand plugin” but it usually happens on forums where nothing is guaranteed 😂. Something like Reverb.com but for the plugins would be cool
It was slightly cheaper with a preorder. There’s gonna be a lot of hype for new features for sure but if you have no issues with writing melodies then I’ll just wait for the sale
Hahah it may look like that but unfortunately I’m heavily addicted to plugins. This video is to show others as well as myself from the future that sometimes it is not worth it to fall into plugin boutique deals and spend whole paycheck on plugins 😂
I'm going through this right now... Like I love my 3rd party plugins. Pro-Q3 being the main one... But I'm finding I get better/cleaner results with stock plugins?!?!?!
Yeah, Pro-Q3 is still unbeatable but if you think about it, it’s just an EQ with a bunch of “cooler kids” features. I rarely use it in places other than main groups or master. Stock tools, especially those in Live have way more features to uncover but you need to stop thinking of them as “just stock plugins”
Thanks for watching and no worries, next video on my favorite (non generic) Live tips is coming this week. I can’t work in Live without Push 3 anymore but I need to find a cool way to show some tips for it 😉
2:47 wait if ur tuning it to one note… doesnt that mean the sub frequencies its adding are only going to be one note? I get if ur key is g# (guessing minor) but what happens when ur bass plays an e? isnt it still going to add a g# sub? or is that fine?
You’re right, it’s locked to one key (just like rbass is). There’s always an option to automate or do some midi magic with M4L. I think the only 3rd party plugin that has an option to follow midi is bass xxl by Denise
Awesome vid brah, but I do have a question. My envelope follower seems to be missing the 'remote / modulation' section/s. Along the top of the device mine just has the mapping box and the percentage values that I can only set between 0& and 100%! What's up with that? I am on Ableton 11.. is that why?
Kirchhoff is super versatile plus I like the fact that it can mimic the eq curves of analog EQs! Speaking of EQ8 - making it dynamic for tasks like blending kick and bass is easy but to make it more precise you need to make a copy of a track you want to follow the envelope with, then isolate/band pass the specific frequency and finally use env follower to trigger it with only this specific freq range. Long story short, a lot of work to do 😂
They added those in 12 since now you can modulate the automation. As I showed in the video, it’s not a necessary thing to have for this technique so you should be good to go classic Live 11 env follower 😉
The M4L LFO? It shouldn’t be that heavy on CPU unless you have some simple modulations going on. Judging from what you say, someone got geeky 😎. Which version you’re running?
@@Zdrewe 11 suite, and yes im using stock LFO device that comes with ableton. and yes its a max for live device. thing is when i set it too high speeds it eats cpu. and when i use lfo in synths to modulate stuff it takes almost no cpu. so lowkey i wonder how to use that lfo, maybe i should download the less cpu intensive version someone made on the net. the power of max for live, which i soon might learn, cause im hella geeky lol.

@@Zdrewe Overrated how? Vintage and Plate are the best sounding algo reverbs I've ever heard and I've heard a lot of them.
True, but they're good enough + you can have the free valhalla space reverb for everything else.
1:38 isnt this gonna do some weird phasing on the bass? since EQs always create phase changes idk. i dont rlly know what im talking about tbh
Great works bro
Man great video. many people spend a lot on plugins when they already have the tool. inspired me to do one video about this in Logic 😃
Thanks a lot bro! Some third party plugins are just simply a cleverly skinned stock devices honestly
Aaaaaand subscribed! :D
Means a world 🙏 thanks!
Im addicted to your videos 😂
I usually feel sorry for people with addictions but in this case, I’m not 😅 means a world 🙏
As a developer of a cool host plugin that lets you play with all your plugins in unique ways, we hope you don’t delete all your plugins-ins.
Super! Wow effects all over.
Pure Gold!
Thx so much.
Roar is insane!!! very good video but i never leave my pro-q3 xD keep it up bro!
It’s literally a hybrid of Rift and Saturn but stock an easy to use. Pro Q3 built itself to become a go-to for literally everyone so I take that 😂
i like easy to use stuff! my man pro-q3 is THE GO TO xD @@Zdrewe
I swear the first time I tried out Roar on an Offbeat Bassline I was blown away by its capabilities. It might also be a decent alternative to Izotope Trash 2 finally.
With the modulation capabilities it reminds me of Minimal Audio Rift. You're right - the possibilities are endless
yeah dude, you channel is great! I've been producing for yeeeaaaars and you showed me stuff I didn't know :) thanks man! new follower!
Nothing bad about being lazy, but it’s all about having fun! Btw, the “Grammy” preset from soothe does wonders 😉😅
Your videos are so helpful! Thanks man
Most welcome my friend 🙏
Absolutely agree with you on this.
Grate video Zdrewe, first when i started i got as many plugins as i could get but nowdays i use mostly ableton live stock plugins.
Same! Not that I don’t like the plugins I have but majority of times stock ones are more than enough
PML has a free rack for cutting frequencies called “Space Maker”
that is not a soothe2 replacement brother.
Ableton stock plugins are really nice 👍
you missed a trick there, pirate logo should have been accompanied by keygen liquid DnB
Brings too many nostalgia, I would’ve cried then 🥲
wow! I just found your channel and your editing is really funny and paced excellently. tips are great too! loved the bit that poked fun at folks who obsess over specific compressors when they should just be making music! also I totally agree about OTT! why are people using the third party OTT instead of just OTT?? lol
very underrated I'm glad I found this video
This is suddenly very relevant to anyone who owns a Push 3 standalone, since third party plugins are not supported on the device.
You know what, I have the “wired” version of Push so I haven’t thought about it 😅 good point
So the envelope follower is just a long way to make a MB Compressor
Correct but not exactly. It’s more of a dynamic eq like Fab Filter. Compression gives more control like ratio and knee. With Envelope Follower you can only control “attack” and “release” by adjusting rise and fall parameters
@@Zdrewe Am I missing something? You put the envelope follower/EQ on the bass, right? Did you sidechain it to the kick and I missed it? (Also, dynamic EQ can be done on the free TDR Nova plugin and I think on the sidechain of the Ableton stock compressor if you pick an EQ curve. No?)
Interesting - Subbed!
I wish Ableton had a nice reverb for mixing, not mangling.
🤯🤯🤯.... In other words, never underestimate the powerful Ableton.
Something like Reverb.com but for the plugins would be cool
at 5:59 whats that tool to see the wave shape of your kick? Is that something from ShaperBox? Great vid btw.
Thanks a lot 🙏 yeah exactly, that’s the built in oscilloscope in ShaperBox 3 which I have it on my master here.
Looks like some nice upgrades for sure. Live 12 is out today, $229 for my upgrade from Live 11 Suite. Yea. Hmm. Wait for a sale?
It was slightly cheaper with a preorder. There’s gonna be a lot of hype for new features for sure but if you have no issues with writing melodies then I’ll just wait for the sale
super cool video. thx for sharing your knowlege 🙂
Would the last bit replace the Shaper Toolbox too ? 🎉
I like this, you are the healthiest Ableton producer not like others, including me, using steroid plug-ins 😉
Hahah it may look like that but unfortunately I’m heavily addicted to plugins. This video is to show others as well as myself from the future that sometimes it is not worth it to fall into plugin boutique deals and spend whole paycheck on plugins 😂
Very good stuff
coool, learned a thing or two just yet, noice!
Glad to hear that! 🙏
Stock tools, especially those in Live have way more features to uncover but you need to stop thinking of them as “just stock plugins”
make more vidz like this! and i wanna see some push 3
Thanks for watching and no worries, next video on my favorite (non generic) Live tips is coming this week. I can’t work in Live without Push 3 anymore but I need to find a cool way to show some tips for it 😉
What headphones are you using for mixing?
Sennheiser HD490 for overall mixing/producing and VSX for double checks and final adjustments
I still use the legacy chorus.
Great content ! thank you !
You’re welcome and thanks for watching 🙏
Im mainly using external plugins because I use ableton intro and most of these arent available for me
2:47 wait if ur tuning it to one note… doesnt that mean the sub frequencies its adding are only going to be one note?
Thanks a lot and yes, exactly. Modulation was introduced in 12. For this particular trick you don’t need it (that’s why I’m switching to remote).
amazing content thank you for that
Thanks for watching my friend 🙏

the goat THE GOAT
Rent free meme applicable to everything
what is that synth instrument hes using in the first part? is that an ableton sound?
If you ask about the bass from envelope follower, that’s a simple saw wave patch with +5 harmonic I processed with Roar after
Ahhhh I was trying to figure out something to make eq8 dynamic and ended up buying kirchhoff eq....at least it was on sale and still super good
Kirchhoff is super versatile plus I like the fact that it can mimic the eq curves of analog EQs! Speaking of EQ8 - making it dynamic for tasks like blending kick and bass is easy but to make it more precise you need to make a copy of a track you want to follow the envelope with, then isolate/band pass the specific frequency and finally use env follower to trigger it with only this specific freq range. Long story short, a lot of work to do 😂
Great tips.
Question. I don't have the MOD/REMOTE button on the envelope follower ? I'm using Ableton Live 11 Suite. Any idea ?
They added those in 12 since now you can modulate the automation. As I showed in the video, it’s not a necessary thing to have for this technique so you should be good to go classic Live 11 env follower 😉
Great video
Thanks a lot 🙏

I recently switched to stock ableton. For the mist part… Lfo device is very cpu intensive
Maybe it's the device you're modulating or maybe a bug? It's very light on CPU for me
The bathroom call out was wild….
…so I guess it was true for you 😂
Does Roar have unsymetric distortion ?
I know that Trash allows for asymmetrical but I yet have to find out how to achieve it in Roar. Same as you said in your other comment, I just decided to switch to stock plugins for majority of my mixing and sound design 😉
if u offset the phase of a signal before you distort it u can achieve unsymetric distortion in ableton btw. @@Zdrewe

Really? Which model you have then?
@@Zdrewe2011 MacBook Pro OSX 10..13.6 Cannot upgrade OSX to new OSX that is required by Ableton Live 12. Which upsets me! lol. Ableton 12 requires 10.14. @Robert_11911 damn that’s weird, you should be able to upgrade with no issues at all. Speaking of OTT, it’s been in Live for a good while. Just type OTT in search bar 😉

no way a youtuber finally caught me on the toilet watching youtube. every time they make that joke i never actually am but he caught me shitty 💀💀
You were brave enough to admit it 😂
I agree. I use ableton stock plug ins for everything. There is no need for third party plug ins because the ableton plug ins are top quality. You are just wasting your money. The ableton plug ins do everything you need. You just need to take a few minutes to learn them. Seriously stop wasting time and money on third party stuff. It also makes your tracks simpler because you don't have to worry about installing a ton of third party stuff when you upgrade your computer.
