  • We're revisiting the NVIDIA GTX 980 Ti in 2021, specifically the EVGA Hybrid 980 Ti. The 980 Ti is a former flagship, now benchmarked vs. 1080 Ti, 970, 5700 XT, 3080, 6800 XT, & lots more.

This 2021 review of the NVIDIA GTX 980 Ti uses the EVGA GTX 980 Ti Hybrid, setting forth to determine how the card compares to modern GPUs, like the RTX 3080, RTX 3070, RTX 3060 Ti, RX 6800 XT and 6800, and also to those in between. Because the GPU market is such a mess right now, depending entirely on where you live, you might have a better chance at getting an RTX 3060 Ti than a used GTX 1080 Ti; at the same time, if your local marketplaces have more used cards (discounting eBay, which seems to be way too expensive right now), it might be sensible to grab something used. Even still, the GTX 980 Ti does well overall for 1080p gaming in 2021, depending on the graphics quality settings, so it can hang on for a little while yet.

I got the hybrid Evga kit for my 1080 ti FE and its beeen amazing how well that card has been able to hit 50-60 fps (and a good frametime of sub 20ms) on 4k gaming.
I was really hoping GE would show us now vs then benchmarking on titles they tested in 2017 when the card came out but what is really interesting is this
      March 2017 | EVGA 1080 Ti FTW | 4k Sniper Elite 4 avg fps = 86.8 fps
      ruclips.net/video/-WE4UWGHnzU/видео.html
      July 2019 | VGA 1080 Ti FTW | 4k Sniper Elite 4 avg fps = 89.9 fps
      ruclips.net/video/Qeb3IhsZSCM/видео.html
so that's like 3-4%. So not so good and yet when you examine 1% low and 0.1% low figures there is significantly better result
      Period | 1% low and 0.1% low
      March 2017 | 73 & 68 fps
      vs
      July 2019 | 80 & 78
its more like 10% and that was 2 years ago so who knows how much better it is.

I was really hoping that would have loaded up the games they tested in the original reviews and compared the results in those tests with today's results.
With updates to Vulcan, DirectX, OS and Nvidia Driver's you'd expect, hope, to see improvements however its impossible to tell because despite GTA V being tested almost always it seems on the 1080 ti reviews that GE didn 't do any GTA V testing back in 2017 when it launched.

Some may say this will take away from new sales.....no chance. There will be more people looking to upgrade, than others who try to me more frugal within their own means. Also, helps others to be more money conscious when better gear is waved in their faces.
When Steve/ GN does segments like this, it really shows even more good character as there are people who cannot afford to upgrade and at least they have some reassurance that their hard-earned gear is still very usable.

      Why do i need it?
We have a lot of Workstations, we use for coding/compiling. So they need RAM and CPU power.
GPU...well give me something, that reliably powers 3 Displays and i am fine and here is the issue: low cost GPUs and iGPUs have issues here.

Buy day 1 sell day negative 14 and you'll always make out well (but also don't be stupid and have a backup)
I can sell 2 weeks - 1 month early because I keep a secondary system that's much weaker / cheaper around for the times my main rig is down being upgraded.
It may seem like a waste of money but it's literally paid for itself many times over the years (like I said my last upgrade was $0 out of pocket because I could sell early)
Now with them boom happening I'll likley sell off that backup card (rx 580) get more than I paid for it years ago and wait around for price drops to pickup another cheap go between card.

Then I sold the 780ti for a good price just ti have the seller bend the cooling and kinda melt the card( he messaged me that he had issues after somehow bending the cooling solution on it).
Now he is selling it for 178 euros.

@@mcmoose64 well the point is of course assuming he isn't just going to quit pc gaming cause his card died... Lol
I was just pointing out how the idea of "riding it out" with an older card for a long while doesn't necessarily beat something like I do not only in performance but in actual costs as well.
If you're smart about it and buy and sell at the right time there's very little lost "value" in always trading up to the next best card as soon as its available.
One of my tricks to make it work the best is I sell the "old" card a few weeks - month before the new ones releases (perks of staying informed on the market) and in the downtime I usually keep a relatively cheap lower end card in a drawer for use as a temporary card.
The money I save doing this easily allows me to spend a couple hundred bucks every few years buying and selling my "go between" and even this time my last one was a rx 580 I paid $179 for that I sold a few months ago via ebay auction for almost $600 (I set price to start at $1 and that's where it ended up).
So now come next time I need a gap fill card I've already got ~$400 bucks to spend on one and not even see a impact on my spending whatsoever.
I've been doing this wince 2013 when I first got my first high end cards 780's and I've upgraded every gen between then and now of the 80/80ti cards and in total my out oc pocket costs are only around $180 / yr
Absolutey worth it to never have to settle for anything but the best for all this time.

When I finally did want to go high end (having gotten a 4k screen and shooting for 4k/60 performance) I really didn't have much choice but to go Nvidia and the gtx 780 eventually I got a second one and had dual card SLI for all x80/ti cards through the 2080ti when I went back to a single card. The upgrades each year cost me only a couple hundred and when going from sli 1080ti - 2080ti I was able to do so without spending anything and then going to the 3080 I was able to pocket another $300.
I don't know how "passionate" I am about all of it but having the best while spending as little as possible is something I do work pretty hard to make sure happens. I would same I'm more interested in that side of it than anything.
Knowing I'm gaming on hardware someone who is spending the kind of money 8ve spent typically could afford makes me feel satisfied with the effort I put in to stay "in the know".
The fact is I would (as a hobby) be keeping up with all this stuff anyways so I might as well benefit in some ways from all the "wasted" time, lol.

You realize that by waiting til "it's worth it" you'll likley have killed off most if not all of your old parts resale value and in doing so you'll be paying full price for the new parts.
Meanwhile those that are smart about timing can buy new and then sell before new parts hit and get the "upgrade" to next new part for very little.
They spread that large cost you're sinking all at once to much smaller amounts a few different times but ejsy they get is to have a pc that STAYS top of the line the entire time instead of starting out strong and quickly fading all the way down to the bottom of the charts.
To me why spend $700 every 5 years when I can spend $160 a year and never have to deal with parts that no longer considered "the best"
