Nvidia's new RTX 3080 mobile GPU is the fastest you can get in a laptop, but Nvidia's marketing team hasn't made it easy for consumers to tell how fast each laptop will actually be.

A mobile GPU with that amount of power management trailing just ~25% behind desktop counterparts is some seriously impressive engineering.
"Confusing for consumers who shop only by the numbers"
Exactly what they wanted.
Generally selling lower quality silicon in the same pricing is just a money printer for nvidia.
That statement is beyond stupid, take off that tinfoil hat, kid.
What exactly is it that they wanted? Consumers to be disappointed and be returning their laptops? Consumers to not trust the Nvidia brand?
Their goal, as mentioned in this video, is to allow all of their cards to be used in as wide range of laptops as possible. Just like when you're buying a desktop 3080, some will perform better while others worse depending on the silicon and the model/version you buy. Nothing different here.
@@sujimayne well said
@@sujimayne they could also have called mobile RTX 3080 RTX3070 M .... M for mobile and it's based on 104 die like rtx 3070 desktop

@@timserious7678 I'm not so sure if consumers equating a mobile GPU to a desktop GPU just by the numbers in their title aren't to blame for being disappointed.
Marketing could be more robust with naming, but I wouldn't call it a marketing trick either.
I think they should bring the "M" suffix back when the mobile part isn't just undervolted and underclocked identical part. Calling this RTX 3080M and having performance between RTX 3070 and RTX 3080 would have been great. Calling this RTX 3080 while having totally different hardware than RTX 3080 is just lying. If they had RTX 3080M and RTX 3080 it would be obvious to everybody that those are NOT the same hardware.
This
People not familiar with tech will read the name, think it's amazing and just buy it thinking the product is the same.
And I don't blame them, most people can't dig into everything they buy.
I mean most of them say max q, so you already know if you just look up max q on google. If they don’t say it, then you can check the max wattage allocated to the gpu and pretty much figure out all you need to know
@@williambarrantes1674 It's not *only* about clocks and wattage. See en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GeForce_30_series for details. For example, "RTX 3080" on laptop has 6144 cores and "RTX 3080" on desktop has 8704 cores. On the other hand, "RTX 3070" on desktop has 6144 cores!
@@MikkoRantalainen well yes it’s widely known that laptop mobile gpus line up with one level down desktop gpus. I mean yeah a full size 3080 is about the same size as a laptop in itself 😂. They can’t actually make it equal a desktop, it’s common sense, sacrifices are made for a portable small machine. I’ve just been looking this stuff up for like 2 days, I just recently decided to look into buying a gaming laptop. A couple youtube videos and google searches and a know most of the stuff that matters
@@williambarrantes1674 My point is that *if it is not the same part do not call it using identical name.* If Nvidia had RTX 3080 and RTX 3080M, I wouldn't complain about the naming. However, when they currently have *RTX 3080* and *RTX 3080* and the latter is actually closer to RTX 3070 I do have a problem.
And note that they used to have the "M" suffix for the mobile parts so this misdirection must be intentional!

It's more complicated now when laptop manufacturers can really play with voltages, clock speeds depending on their cooling capacity. Before then, if you didn't having the cooling capacity, you'd just use a lower-end GPU.
Yes that what it comes down to which is why you could have two laptops from two different brands with the same CPU, RAM, GPU, and m.2 and one is 10% to 20% if not higher than the other in performance because of lack of cooling or even restrictions set on the CPU or GPU. Ditching Max-Q allows them to make laptops the way they want, you can have high performance tiny laptops that are super loud without needing to function in the Max-Q rules.

Max-P. I have that in the morning when I drink too much water.
1:40 Max-Q doesn't stand for maximum quietness, it stands for maximum efficiency. The letter Q is used in engineering as a variable to describe the efficiency of a system or process. Max-Q was designed around the idea that as you boost the clock speeds and power consumption of a chip you get diminishing returns in terms of the increase in performance compared to the increase in power usage and heat generation, which requires larger power supplies and more cooling. These cards were designed with the whole system in mind, with the goal to try and target that sweet spot where if you try to push the card any faster you use more power and generate more heat, but don't really see a commensurate increase in performance. Thus Max-Q, or maximum efficiency.

Same with pre-builts.
Scalpers added to those crappy prebuilt setups killed the market.
Yes, but unless you figure out a way to Frankenstein your own GPU using the laptop chip on a custom board you won't see nearly the same performance as you would with a desktop card. The fact that Nvidia gives them the same name regardless is a travesty.

how come AORUS 15 charge dont light up and it dont charge when the come is off line
Every time Linus says "but first..." I always get ready to fast forward incase it's a sponsor spot or ad lol This video I had my finger over 'L' like 4 times. You got me, Linus...You got me.
Max-Q? No No. It's more like the good old M designation we were used to for years and years.
Well, there's now mobile AND mobile max-q. That's the point Linus was making about how it's getting more complicated.
My laptop has an rtx 2070, but it's not a max-q (quiet, lower fan speed) design.
Note that Linus says he wouldn't be surprised if a well cooled (aka noisy, aka max-p or performance) 3070m outperforms a quiet, less well cooled 3080m.
As long as they didnt use the entire different GPU die, like from GA102 to 104 (regardless of the following 3-digit numbers), I can accept this. In desktop GTX1060, it's also messed up, but at least all "GP106-xxx".
@@Texas240 understood bro/sis😃. I just oversimplified.
It’s the wild west of mobile gpus all over again.
WTF, 10min ago, linus just update that they are using the GA104 for RTX3080M. Now, I really care about that "M".
@@fhs7838 😂😅
The Gtx 980M that I have in my laptop has 8 gigs of memory
Is it just because of MSI ? Or is it only other brands too ?
Any Idea if this Powersharing Feature will be/is also available on AMD-CPU(R9 5900HX)/NVidia-GPU-Notebooks?
0:48 Horus is Aorus
Aorus Herecy
This is what we need in a laptop review,, Straight into the performance review
The only tech video opening I'd never skip
If I buy the oled 4k, can I get the performance of 1080 settings? Or always runs on 4k?
