this could be the perfect setup for an engineering student at a dorm who needs something powerful for software and simulations, touch screen for notes/drawings, and would like to game in their off time
Its nice to have EVERYTHING in one device. Gotta think about how simple it makes having all my work/school documents on my gaming laptop that is also my gaming desktop.
Okay, I believe I am one of those “persons” who would bennefit from this device. Due to personal corcumstances, I move and travel quite often. I study in a different city from my main residence, and I visit home often for extended periods of time. Also, I move almost every course and this one particularly, Im going abroad in an exchange program. All of this makes having a desktop with its screen, mouse and keyboard really inefficient, so a device like that would be really helpful since I still could use the non external gpu mode for my classes and every day portability. Here, the question would be: why, in my case, wouldnt I just get an ultra portable device for productivity and a gaming laptop? With 3299 you can easily get an ultrathin laptop (thinkpad, new macbooks, xps line, etc) with great battery life, nice productivity screen and keyboard and a gaming laptop to keep at your temporary home, maybe a bit heavier but still ok to get in a backpack every month.
Ya I agree, I’m in a similar circumstance where I can’t really rationalize buying a standalone gaming desktop and having a laptop due to constant travelling. This would definitely fit the bill theoretically, but price wise it just ain’t worth it right now. Really think they missed out on a large group of people making it that expensive. Maybe in the future it’ll come down, right now just doesn’t make sense for me price wise either
Someone like me, who is always on the go, this product is just what I was looking. Although it's still very expensive, it definitely opened a door for more companies to do the same and therefore creating more variety in terms of specs and pricing.
This the laptop of my dreams. Thin and light to take it anywhere, and can bring it back to my desk for great gaming performance by hooking up the GPU. All my files stay on the same machine and can still play lighter games when I'm on the go if need be and they're all already installed (though storage might be an issue). I hope more companies start to do this and lower the price. I'd buy it ASAP if it were around $2500
id only buy this if the total price is comparable to a laptop that has the same gpu integrated in it. So, for example i could give ~1000 for the laptop and ~500 for the cheapest egpu option for a total for 1500. that would be perfect
I am a student, and I see the potential. A decent 2 in 1 like an XPS with 16:10 will run you 1200-2500€, and you absolutely can't game on it. (granted, XE graphics are Oukayish). With this thing though, even without the rtx 3080, it is capable of light gaming at 1080p.
@@Fighter3005 Ngl, I'm a full-time student and just built a new desktop gaming PC with a 5900X and an RTX 3080. I know that $3200 is a lot for a lot of people but depending on where you are in the world it really isn't that much. Although I wouldn't be spending $3200 on this laptop, I'd much rather get a laptop with a built-in RTX 3080 and 5900HX. Although currently for my laptop I'm using a Gigabyte Aero 15X with a GTX 1070. I don't really have any desire to upgrade anytime soon since it's not really like I'm going anywhere during the pandemic.
exactly the ipad air 4...has the arm chip onboard for like 800 or less...Then you get a 2000$ desktop and a 400$ monitor......that both devices can share etc i mean fit in a 5tb external drive too. Plus you can plug the i pad to the PC type c to type c trasnfer rates no more flash drives. The pad air 4 with a type c dock...is game changer for any one that is looking at poor 4c laptop options at 800$ or less with no GPU.
well it depends on what kinda situation it would be used in i think If you are constantly moving around a powerful yet portable laptop is the way to go
That's a good approach to the external GPU. Definitely a viable option to always have a mobile laptop and a choice of mobile gaming laptop and with GPU in a separate casing which is great from thermal perspective. Would be nice to see this progress and close the gap between desktop GPU version. Most of the time people play games at home so they could take the laptop with without the external GPU and in less often scenarios there is still the comfortable option to take it with you, a laptop backpack is definitely enough to put it in. Also if the connection standard is kept and the GPUs pool will expand with new GPUs being released, that can easily replace a desktop for someone who wants the ability to play games without resigning from mobility. In a perfect world I would see this as a standard for any laptop using some standard interface which would be fast enough for GPU. Promising but with Nvidia closing the gap more and more between their desktop vs mobile GPUs, there is a chance that won't be needed much longer. 3070 Super looks SUPER in comparison to mobile 2080. The only thing left to do is for producers to make a real difference regarding cooling systems. They are getting better but are still far from what's needed atm.
It makes sense for me and the reason to that is because I attend university, I also game a lot, and I travel back home for about 2 months at least once a year, and I’d like to be able to game comfortably wherever I go
Great review Dave! I can see the use case for this, but I wish Asus would have delivered a bit more on the 4K display. I am more of a desktop user, but I like the thought behind Asus’ laptops.
At this point these laptops just need to be straight up presented to anyone who's just getting into tech right out of High School. Super exciting time for them. As for me, 2021 is too sad, too late.
This is the kind of innovation and competition I love to see because it pushes the tech forward. AMD have done a great job of waking up Intel. I'm excited to see how Intel is responding from pressure from AMD, Arm, Apple and Microsoft. I love Thunderbolt but Intel need the support of more than just Apple, they need AMD as well. Thunderbolt should switch to PCIe 6.0 to support eGPUs better.
I think you put it perfectly - this setup is made specifically for a certain person - so happens I am totally that person! - It works as a powerful notebook when I'm on the go - Plugged in the CPU should crush design workflows like Illustrator and InDesign - Jacked into the XG mobile its got gaming/game dev strength - In stand its a drawing tablet for photoshop with any MPP pen - Flat down its a tablet for casual surfing! I'm really excited to get my hands on this setup when more options are available.
G14 is around $1500? Which is same price as the flow x13 (w/o egpu)... Them being the same price I,d be leaning towards the g14 for sure - except the g14 has no webcam which is a deal breaker for me. So x13 is at top of my list and probably ordering soon. Maybe in a year or two I'll check egpu price and hope to find a much cheaper 3080 or powerful 4080
@@TheGgbk definitely understandable. I never use a webcam so it's perfect. I'm actually really glad there's no camera too. I like the anesthetic better. From what I hear, the X13 is an amazing machine as well.
I was actually looking for a laptop with almost these exact specs outside of the 3080 attachment, and I can tell you specifically why I wanted it. Nomad life style. Living out of a truck/ tent, and awaiting starlink. Starlink would allow you to take a battery generator and solar panels, and camp on a mountain in the middle of nowhere and get high speed internet and game on one of these bad boys with top notch performance. Pretty fucking awesome. You don't really want a desktop setup to lug around, even in a small Nomad living vehicle. It's not energy efficient enough, takes up too much space, and isn't versatile. I actually am considering this now that it's on my Radar. Very interesting, and I know exactly what it's designed for as well. Just thought I'd share what I thought the design reasoning was. Escaping rent and finding freedom, but staying connected to high speed internet. Can't fucking wait for Starlink to drop.
Yea, imagine sitting in your old van, fighting cold and mold but having high-speed internet to enjoy your life. Put a VR-headset on and who cares that you are pissing in a bottle, driving on the edges of societal standards. Problems? None.
Liked for the last minute! And I believe that the category of such people would be people who had to relocate/travel a lot. Travel as in for your job (like think 3 months of work in a different country as a consultant and not the holiday).
Would you rather this setup? Or a laptop/desktop combo?
Hey Dave , next review must be the ASUS TUF DASH F15
I think I would be better with a desktop + tablet, in my case
I definitely go for X13+XG mobile, super versatile.
I move a lot between two cities so i think i would be better with this setup than carrying a desktop every 3 months

this could be the perfect setup for an engineering student at a dorm who needs something powerful for software and simulations, touch screen for notes/drawings, and would like to game in their off time
yee
The non up-gradable RAM kept me from buying this. I almost bought it, but you showed me what I needed. Thanks!

People do know where to find some beautiful footage to display on their videos now lol
You have the best intro
Hey I came across you lol
Its nice to have EVERYTHING in one device. Gotta think about how simple it makes having all my work/school documents on my gaming laptop that is also my gaming desktop.
8:54
me: mom can we have unicorn?
mom: we have unicorn
at home
unicorn at home: 🌽 unique corn
I was hoping they would utter like in toyline, "each sold separately."
i'm pretty sure they are going to have the option of buying them separately. idk how the price or availability will be like tho
Same for me. Most people can't see the full picture. It's more about theportability. It's not for everyone, I agree though..
Hey have you ever heard of itx ? Search for optimum tech on youtube. You can get an amazing machine with a lian li t150
yeah an m1 MacBook air and a Zephyrus g15 with 5900HS and RTX 3080 comes at around 3400 USD
Ya. Get a MacBook Air for real work and gaming laptop for temporary home makes more sense.
So, for example i could give ~1000 for the laptop and ~500 for the cheapest egpu option for a total for 1500. that would be perfect
was waiting for this type of laptop for programming + gaming. can't Wait to get my hands on this one.
Alright... Say goodbye to your twin, kidney.
Lmao, ur right
Mine doesn't even have one to say goodbye to
6:49 That was soo smooth, how did no one notice that!!!
I love the way he keeps saying "students" instead of "spoilt rich brats".
Or you know, people who work for their money.
ya know all those students with $3200 laptops! XD
Those things aren't mutually exclusive. I'm a student, but my parents are also very rich.
Was looking forward to this review in particular, thanks for doing it 👍🏻
I lost it when he said when he said "I don't have any answer for that."
I can appreciate the honesty in that statement. 😀

Dave always makes me smile somehow whenever I watch his videos, love this guy (no homo).
It's better to have a
800USD Laptop
2400USD Gaming Desktop
exactly the ipad air 4...has the arm chip onboard for like 800 or less...Then you get a 2000$ desktop and a 400$ monitor......that both devices can share etc i mean fit in a 5tb external drive too. Plus you can plug the i pad to the PC type c to type c trasnfer rates no more flash drives. The pad air 4 with a type c dock...is game changer for any one that is looking at poor 4c laptop options at 800$ or less with no GPU.
you can build the real RTX 3080 with 2400USD
well it depends on what kinda situation it would be used in i think
If you are constantly moving around a powerful yet portable laptop is the way to go
@@Grady_Oconnell just remotely connect to your desktop.
@@VatchGaming I really don’t see that being the solution especially for people doing heavier rendering or editing

This is exactly what I want for years !!! So smart the usb c inside the connection !
dave, this intro is so clean!! and in 4k? you spoil us
His intro has so much bass my sub woofer shook my house 😂
you're watching RUclipsr videos on a home theatre sounds system?
@@mellestompe yeah , because of the 4k quality
Ikr! The basswave at the start sent a shockwave through my house lol
Anyone else just bought a laptop and now the coolest things are coming out 😭
It makes sense for me and the reason to that is because I attend university, I also game a lot, and I travel back home for about 2 months at least once a year, and I’d like to be able to game comfortably wherever I go
5:57 "lol plz"
Here I was thinking my poor little apu stood a chance
Let's be honest when we clicked on this video knowing we were going to say
"That's cool and all but I'm broke"
6:00 so the laptop 3080 _IS_ equivalent to a desktop 3060... Seems they're quite overpriced and overmarketed for what they are.
It is kind of excusable because it is so compact. From the video it seems only 1/4 of regular egpu size.
More like 3070 desktop but achieved with only 150w
Great review Dave! I can see the use case for this, but I wish Asus would have delivered a bit more on the 4K display. I am more of a desktop user, but I like the thought behind Asus’ laptops.
At this point these laptops just need to be straight up presented to anyone who's just getting into tech right out of High School. Super exciting time for them. As for me, 2021 is too sad, too late.
The zoom effect on the track pad was neat!
Asus: do you wanna buy it?
Me: "LOL PLZ"
8:32 "There's no one else that makes this..."
Hope other brands incld. OEMs hear your statement and act positively...
gotta love that sick bass in the intro
2:05 Finally a laptop worthy of DJ-ing.
I always liked your adidas track upper!!!.....it suits u! 😌
We need a review of the new G14 and G15 Zephyrus. This is just a niche product.
Wish there was like a full version of the outro. It's beautiful.
I think you put it perfectly - this setup is made specifically for a certain person - so happens I am totally that person!
- It works as a powerful notebook when I'm on the go
- Plugged in the CPU should crush design workflows like Illustrator and InDesign
- Jacked into the XG mobile its got gaming/game dev strength
- In stand its a drawing tablet for photoshop with any MPP pen
- Flat down its a tablet for casual surfing!
I'm really excited to get my hands on this setup when more options are available.
"Let's talk about ports, cos i'ts connected"
This thing looks amazing but I think I'll hold on to the extra $2,000 and stick with my G14 🙂
That thing is so bad ass. Love the looks too. Thanks for sharing! Really was diggin this when you did that video of all the laptops and showed this.
U know that its a good product when his review is longer than 7 mins
