He thinks for himself and is very introspective. He just lacks education because it bored him at school so he never bothered. But that's not to be confused with skills like lateral thinking and autonomy of thought, which are (imo) more commendable than memorization and the like.

And Steve reading out the letter on the radio could certainly be argued to be to the detriment of the addressee, violation of privacy…… So it’s not always illegal, but on this case it probably is a crime punishable with up to £5000 fine.

He then used showmanship to construct the number grid as if it were random. He most likely had the grid memorised before hand.
