Love the old Tacoma!
He talks about how heavy the Ford is does he not realize how worn out those old street tires are on the ford
@@JayElement13 cmon....those tires are killer aggressive.
He is a professional dog, four legs a waggy tail fur and a nice bouncy demeanour. All the dog hallmarks.
Next time you start to lose grip with an open diff vehicle like you did in this video, try staying on the gas and then use your left foot and push on the brake.
This will put resistance on the wheel in the air spinning and apply some torque to the wheel that has the grip. This is an old school version of traction control and it does work on occasions.
Cheap mechanical locker needed in the ford, and Toyota.
Or a Ford with factory advanced trac from that era idk why they bought a base model one wheel peeler for offroading
@@notasolution it was the cheapest truck. That's it, that's the list.
You’d be amazed at what you can do with a stock vehicle with just lockers
@@richfarfugnuven6308 they couldve gotten a ford with a trac for no extra cost and it wouldve performed 1000 times better, plus it would show people how great the system is and make people who are offroading on the cheap aware of what they could get for cheap, vs a base model one wheel peeler that people are disappointed and discouraged by
@@notasolution Advanced Trac wasn't available on the F-150 until 2009. And as somebody who has it I can assure you it is no substitute even for limited slip, much less a locker.
I’m super surprised the cheap truck with bad tires was out offroaded by the purpose built truck.
What a shocker! Me who hates Ford and loves Toyota...is nice when Toyota can kick sand in Fords face. I am sure if the Ford had better tires and more suspension travel, it would do a lot better.
😂😂
If the Ford had been an FX4 it would have easily gone up, same for the Toyota, if it was a TRD, it would have gone up easily. Rear lockers are a must on IFS trucks.
@@mikefoehr235 i'm the opposite..i hate toyotas and love fords..in fact i hate toyota so much that i could spit on everyone i see...and sometimes i usually do
@@merc-ni7hy Good for you...Ford is nothing but trouble. Had a 97 Taurus...that thing nearly bankrupted me and my wife. After that...the hate was on. I wouldn't let Ford build me an outhouse. FORD=FAILURE OF RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT.
You guys always tell us that tires are the most important factor in off roading so the Ford was doomed from the start.
Agree, not a fair comparison when the Ford has bald street tires vs new mud tires on the Toy.
Yah tire's make a huge difference and you need to buy tyres that are made for whatever you're planning on doing .
@@wildbill23c but toyotas were always better than fords 👀
@@wildbill23c It's nearly laughable how they would do such a silly thing and then tapping the gas when you're meant to give it the beans if you get stuck.
@@adrianhosein7698 funny fords handle more payload and towing capacity.
Open diffs are open diffs. Put a locker in the rear and things would’ve been different for both trucks.
This vid should be called "New mud tires vs. worn AT's."
Worn low profile ATs*
Right? I hate that they even do that
The low weight, articulation and tires are the reason you have traction with the Toyota. Its not because the open differentials are "less openy"
😂😂
Airing down the tires would make a world of difference.
The 20 inch wheels on the f150 makes it really hard to air down lol such a dumb vehicle for offroad videos, open dif and 20 inch wheels with low pro tires I dont understand them
Every TFL off road video in the history of ever.
Happy Saturday morning TFL!!!🌞
I would love to see what the ford can do with a decent set of tires
Agreed! I have an F150 of this gen so I'm excited to see what it is capable of!
And a rear lock. I used to have an explorer and I never got stuck.
That graphics package on the Tacoma 👍😍Nice work fellas!
Thanks Steve!!
Can’t ever go wrong with with a new set of BFGs
love the sidewall but not crazy about the tread pattern! still a dang good tire i bet.
I learned this at the Humane Society: one way to get a dog to stop jumping on you is to simply turn your back to him/her every time it happens. Eventually the pup gets the hint you don't like it and stops the behavior.
Truck turned out great and sticking with 31s is understandable given the rabbit hole of regearing, more power, etc. But not doing a locker is a big oversight. I'd take one over a winch any day.
Well, on one hand, a winch can get you out of trouble when the open diffs fail you. When you get stuck with a locker and no winch, you're walking for help.
@@brentworls8509 if you have a locker, you don't get stuck in the first place. Not to mention, traction boards are dirt cheap.
@@plus790 You've never been in the mud back east, have you? A locker can leave you stuck in a flat, mowed lawn after a spring thaw.
Out on the trail Tacoma!!! Doing a big plumbing job Ford, Tacoma’s are great especially for young folks dearly loved my 2002, as a old guy though really enjoy the comfort of my a F150, I’ll just thumb up the young folks in Tacomas covered in mud when they roll past.
I'm not a Ford fan, but I'm sure that it would have fared better with tires similar to the Toyota
Tires wouldn't have mattered as much as a locking diff. Once a wheel lifts on open differentials all the power goes to the wheel with least resistance such as the wheel in the air. The knobby tire would still be spinning in the air getting no traction to it since these trucks lack suspension articulation making the back end work harder than it should.
I just bought an '04 Tacoma a couple days ago. Was planning to wrap it exactly like you guys did, but you guys beat me to it. Time to Mcfly the thing now.
Gotta have the chili pepper light string though for the interior.
This is awesome! I've been watching TFL since ~2014 where Tommy and Roman did a 3 day series on the Tundra 1794 and its awesome to see how Tommy has become so comfortable on camera and a great reviewer
Thanks for watching for so long!
Put new tyres, locker and lift on the Ford and it’ll do everything the Yota did. Tommy was wrong when he said that the Ford lacked torque. What it lacked, was traction.
My 2wd f150 would probably get through all that just because I have mud tires.
I said the same thing. Truck gets no traction and they say it has no torque. It’s not a torque issue it’s a traction issue.
Exactly, if it was a torque issue, it wouldn't be breaking the tires loose so easily. All it needed was better tires
That 4.6L V8 has plenty of torque. It probably has more than 2 times the amount of torque that Toyota does. Put on good all terrain tires and it would been equal footing.
While I agree with your thinking Kelvin, that Toyota wasn't using lockers. But yeah, equal traction should have been a given.
To make the challenge fair you need to put tires on the Ford F150.
Next time y'all do a series like this. The vehicles should be full size SUV'S (Ford expedition\Excursion, Tahoe\suburban, Durango, etc)
I would love to see that! Those can all be bought relatively cheaply too. I have a 5th gen 4Runner, and am considering getting rid of it and replacing with an 05-ish Tahoe or Suburban. I want something cheap that I don't care about, and I want a V8.
I miss the two-door full-size utes. The old Bronco and Tahoe really left an empty niche when they were discontinued. Now their replacements are four doors of $56k-90k overpriced low-riders lacking off-road utility.
Well, actually I think that an off road comparison between full size and midsize is really interesting, but with same tires to be fair.
So if you run into issues with the Ford, you could call it "Oh the Huge Manatee."
The Yoda came out amazing! Also, these are my favorite types of videos by far that you guys do, keep up these types of series!
Someone below in the comments suggested do the same with full-size SUVs such as Tahoe and Expedition, I 100 % agree!
Poor comparison in my opinion!Your running the Toyota on brand new
M/Ts while the Ford may as well have had slicks.
They do that a lot, unfortunately
That's not always true. A proper low range transfer case, great suspension articulation, and clearance help a lot. The f150 is a boat anchor on the trail because of its size and weight. The Tacoma is the opposite way more nimble and has a greater low range gear set. Not hating just stating the facts on this. That's why an f150 would be better at towing than the Tacoma would.
I have a similar f150 with toyo extreme at's on it that are fairly aggressive and it has no problem on similar terrain.Good traction makes a world of difference as well as driver capability
Tommy missed the opportunity to say,
"Take a different ROUTE."
Nevertheless, great video! It's great seeing trucks that are comparable to my 2006 Dodge Ram 1500 4.7 SLT 4X4.
Need to add lockers on the tacoma ASAP and that thing will be a little tank.
I'm impressed that Ford even made it to the trail with those tires lol.
You guys knocked it out of the park with that Yota.
A+ on the yota, Tommy!! Great job.
I would love to see this thing compete with my Tacoma being mine is a 2.7 with an auto and costs much less and is built about the same
Wow! What a transformation on Baby Yota! That is a great looking machine. Well done!
That Tacoma is an absolute BEAUTY!!! TFL Truck really deserved some credit for this build how awesome!!!
Great video guys! Love that little Toyota!
tommy may have said you were into it for 15k but he did not mention the engine work that you had to have done is that included?3 to 4 k right.
The engine work cost was nearly the price of the whole Ford.
I would change a few things on the F150 like an lsd in the rear with possible lower gear ratio and I actually did that in my 18 xlt screw. Gets better traction on and off road. No electronic locker to fail. And the yota could stand a little locker action also. It’s just a good all round light weight truck.
Would love to see how the newer f150s with the locking diff and 5.0 perform on trails.
I think you guys should have put a locker in the back of the Baby Yota, the open diffs really show its weakness where otherwise it would have been as capable as it looks.
Love it. Glad these first gens are cool now for younger gen. When I bought mine in tx I was unusual most of my compadres had big diesels that I always had to come with my little taco and get em out of sticky situations mostly stuck or broken down. Had mine since 06 and had many adventures with her from deserts to mountains and everything in between. She never let me down.
Just got on tube you and posted my finished motor build. Nothing wrong with the motor just wanted little more power.
Check it out if you want or not.
got 3' 33s rear lockers on my '12 2 door
love it !! bumpers next ...
Cool concept for a test, would love to see it repeated with the truck having a new set of rubber. With some nice tires 6K all in It's still pretty cheap truck. Thanks for the great content
Like how they didn't put such a huge tire on the Tacoma to where it would overwhelm the small engine. At the same time all that money spent on fancy bumpers, that rear flapper camper, wrap, etc could have been put to front and rear diff lockers. Made that truck a real billy goat with the lockers.
Also I wish Toyota still made small trucks like this 1995-2004 Tacoma. Yes this reg cab/medium box/4wd truck is a beast off road, but I owned a 2wd reg cab/medium box and loved that truck. It sat so low that my short 5'6" self could reach into the bed from the side. Something my 1993, 1988, and 1985 2wd pickups were also awesome at, that bed was so low it was easy to load/unload.
Echoing other comments, Ford needs lockers and better tires
a driver mod wouldn't hurt either
@@taylorhickman84 not wrong
What size tires and wheels, and what is the wheel specs(offset, backspacing)....now I see they must be 15"
Tommy, you guys had some great partners for baby Yota, great truck!
I love the theme on the Tacoma!
for off-road defiantly take a look at adding an e-locker to the F-150. there are several options online, most cost less than $900 in parts but labor will depend where you take it.
I'm not sure if a 2004 F150 had this, but looked as if the traction aid was kicking on, if it has it, I would be curious to the outcome then.
That old 2004 - 2008 F150 XL can have cruise control. Buy the switches and install them. Take it to a dealer and for an hour of 'power train diagnostic' they can turn the cruise from 'off' to 'on' in the computer. All the needed parts are there expect the switches in the steering wheel. The dashboard already has the cruise control light in it and it will light up while in use. I did this in my old 2004 F150 XL. It was the best $150 modification I've ever done to a vehicle.
Lovely Tacoma keep doing it ! Next : 4 runner 2G ? ☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️ 80 series ? 60 series ? 😎👌👌👌 good job guys ! Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦
Baby Yota looks sooooo nice with the new tires
I want to try in my lifted f150 with 35s, Same body style as this truck. I think I know where its at, It looks like its a left (North) from the berm?
How much psi do you run in those tires on the Yoda?
I won't lie. I love that style and the next gen F150. Newer tires, a level and maybe kidnap a limited slip from a newer one and you'd have a pretty good trail rig. I bought a 2014 sc FX4 this past fall after owning a Grand Cherokee Limited with the Quadradrive system and a 98 sc F150 with a locker in the rear and I love the newer one. Not because it has a bunch of electronics that will break but because it does so well in the deepest mud, snow or ruts I can find.
Throw some KO2s on there, a two inch proper lift, some basic limited slips or mechanical lockers and you'll have zero issues. I used to have a similar pickup for a construction job. I put about 2500 into it and never had any issues after that.
Would love to see you guys buy a 9th gen F250 crew cab and do a similar build like you did with baby yoda
I’ve got a 4door 02 Tacoma but it’s only rwd, kinda sucks but with the nice goodrich tires it’s a great truck at 250k miles and no issues
hey I may have missed that part, but did you air down the tires on the Tacoma before filming, or was that at street pressures? Just curious. Thanks. GREAT vid guys!
YODA ALL DAY ANY DAY!! I currently daily drive my 1985 Toyota 4runner SR5 5 speed with 5:29 gearing and sits on 35's at 5 corners. great truck.
Noticed a lot of times a little more speed and no drama there is a time to use momentum and not softly softly, pretty sure none of those obstacles would have stopped me, and a few in my Nismo Duke and using a slightly route.
Any idea what the truck will range in the auction i want to bid
Nice video. I would have liked to see some nice aggressive tires on the Ford. Make it a little more capable. Blaze was good comic relief.
I have the 2wd version of this truck. Is there an LSD available for it, I've looked high and low! Thanks in advance
“These are very open differentials” lol
I have the same Tacoma but with a 6 inch lift and 35s. I have 4:88 gears and a locker and my truck because of the locker would go up that hill in 2wd.
Thanks, Blaze, nice that you've named a wild bear. Tires difficult choice. Most in Minnesota have 2 sets, summer tires and winter tires. Nice old Ford. Are standard cabs going the way of manual transmissions?
Good video TFL before Autocross 😀
You know Tommy's used to reviewing new high tech off road trucks and SUV's when he tells an early 2000's Tacoma to "figure it out". There's no traction control or terrain management on those old Toyota's trucks. It is impressive what that open differential Tacoma can do though. Good video Tommy!
i'm not a toyota guy at all, but that truck looks perfect on 31s! very nicely setup!
I love vids like this.
"Baby Yota" 😭😭😭 that's genius
The Ford is just spinning wheels after the ice. Momentum and tires is everything for this truck. You ou guys built the Tacoma, kind of unfair
They established that in the video if you had volume on and didn't treat it like a silent film. They specified that the Tacoma was kind of pricey for a "cheap truck" and that the F150 was a legitimate "cheap truck" being under $4k. Rewatch the video maybe..
Great job on this little truck...
What trail y’all on? Looks like something my vehicle could handle which is exciting
For 33's and a 4 banger auto, you want 4.56 gears and throw in a cheap rear locker. The locker is a while your in Rome upgrade, so not needed, but while it is no extra labor to install might as well. Love the Toygoata :) (FYI: Toyotas are expensive AF after Corona not cheap projects anymore lol.)
Baby yota is beautiful!! Great job!!
Spartan locker, good AT's, that F150 will go just about anywhere it'll fit. Mine sure did. Never gave me a major problem either.
Expensive, maybe, but it look soooo cool. Nice job and i love you dog. Have a good day.
What soft top is on that thing?
Dang u guys upload early
Where is that trial and what’s it called
Anyone know what trail they are on?
Can you share the online action for the Toyota?
Blaze is super cute, but you have to get that jumping under control before he hurts someone not expecting it or of a smaller size. Great video BTW
Love these videos bcuz I like to imagine what my 2016 F350 SRW could do if I ever actually left the pavement lol!!!!!! Traded up from a 2x4 2006 STX F150
I am a huge Toyota fan! I hope Toyota NORTH AMERICA watches this video and has their epiphany and offers Toyota trucks with optional true off road tires. I had to buy steel rims and get Durtracs for my Tundra TRD OFF ROAD. The Michelins it came with are great for hiway and good gravel roads but when snow and mud is to be encountered, nothing beats Duratracs or some equivalent off road tire. How hard can it be to offer tires right from the dealer that make the off roader an off roader?
Y'all should test out one of those lock-right lockers for your baby yota!
I grenaded one with 31s in a YJ, fortunately after completing the Rubicon Trail. It lasted a couple years, but there really isn't much material to garner much strength and still be able to fit inside the small differential carrier. Once they break, small springs, pins and shards of hardened metal make short work of the teeth of your gear set. Go full carrier differential, or go nothing at all if you want it to survive.
Might even be able to live with the topper if it was black.
If I won the auction.
Step #1 drive back to topper place. “Excuse me, I’d like to make a return.” “Sir that was a charity donation. We can’t do a return” “I see...could you point me in the direction of your dumpster then please.”
Step #2 “would anyone like this wood thing in the back?”
Step #3 Hey Siri...how do I remove a vinyl wrap?
@@sinkorswim777 😂..Return the wrap and ask Detroit locker to make a donation for the cause!
Yota is like a tiny mountain goat. Awesome!
Thought you would have removed the roof box as it is an anchor will be heavy on fuel as much as 2mpg difference don't believe me test it.
I have 33s on my 98 tacoma and didn't have to regear.. definitely notice some difference but I think if I went any bigger would have had to regear. My buddy did on his and said it was a waste of money
You guys should get a first gen tundra and test it against the tacoma and the other half ton trucks, would be an interesting to see how it compares to each
I’m doing that OG wrap as soon as I can
That was entertaining. I really feel though that in all fairness, when people do these comparative tests both vehicles should have the same brand and model of tire. Then you can see where the differences truly lie.
What trail was this?
You should be bringing all 3 old trucks for these trips, would be a nice baseline.
if you added an ARB locker or even a mini spool that truck would be unstoppable
ok I have to ask why is there a car topper on top of the ford?
How do you enter to win?
What tires on the Toyota?
