When you are at a cemetery and people drive by to check you out, talk to them. They usually have information that would help you find things or know of people that can help. I’m glad to know there are people out there keeping the cemeteries from being vandalized. But talk to them when they drive by or go to them as they sit and watch you.
i almost approached him but he seemed so intent on looking at the grave he was visiting that i didn't want to bother him if he was visiting a loved on. and he never looked at me, until he came back later in his car. i agree. i'm glad he was keeping an eye out for vandals, if that's what he was doing. thanks, alisa!
My Dad was born and grew up in a little town not far from Granite - Lone Wolf, OK - named after a famous Kiowa Indian Chief. Many of his Dad's brothers and their families lived around this area. It was very common for people to move from this area to California in the 1920s and especially the 1930s, at the height of the Great Depression, because the soil was so poor, and so were most of the people. My Dad's entire family, and several of the other family groups in that big family packed up like the Joads in The Grapes of Wrath and moved to California, where they got jobs with companies such as Del Monte. Some of those families stayed there and their descendents are still there today, whereas some of the others (including my Dad's family) came back to Oklahoma later. Thanks for the interesting tour of Granite. I need to go to Lone Wolf and take photos in that cemetery, as I have many relatives buried there. My cousins also have relatives buried in the Granite Cemetery.
it's a small world, isn't it? sounds like we have very similar backgrounds. the grapes of wrath is one of my favorite books and visiting john steinbeck's grave in salinas, ca was one of my favorite cemetery trips. thanks for sharing this with us, jonna!
The car on Nelson Johnson's headstone looks like a Studebaker to me. I salute you for making these long journeys alone. I don't think many people have that ability. Now that's a car you don't hear much about, anymore :-) I was just speaking with a friend who took a long road trip by himself and we both said how happy we were that no one wanted to join us :-) It's so much easier to travel alone and a lot more fun in so many ways. Thanks, Steve for sharing your family with us. Growing up in Los Angeles county, I gravitated to small, quiet communities just like Granite. The landscape is serene. I just read on a visitors bureau website that Granite from the quarry has been shipped all over the world and is part of some very interesting, famous statues.

Thank you for sharing your family graves and talking about them. It is really amazing to share personal stories because it really says we are all the same, even though our experiences might vary. I can relate, I had these great grandparents who originally immigrated to the USA from France and settled in Chicago. Later on they moved to Southern Indiana and other relatives followed them or were born and raised there. Meanwhile my parents and grandparents (and most of my great grandparents kids) stayed in the area and I was born and raised in a suburb about 10 minutes from the downtown area (so close in fact I could see the skyline). During the summer we would often go and spend weekends with my great grand parents and other relatives who lived in the area and it was a big difference. Small town America is something I wasn't familiar with on a day to day basis and going to visit my relatives was a huge awakening. Recently many of the living relatives (the grandchildren and great grandchildren and so forth of my great grandparents or their brothers and sisters) came out for a family reunion and even though we are all from different places we had a lot to share. The Southern Indiana relatives have a southern twang, the local relatives talk like that old Da Bears skit but it's all good. We often never realize how important family is until it's too late. The funny sayings are great, my cousins in Southern Indiana have graces for my one cousin who died and preplanned for theirs and they have funny sayings. It's a nice way to look at death.

In the early 80' I was in that reformatory not a good time in my life but a learning lesson for sure ..all the people of granite were good people ..I knew there was a lot of history there some of the stories I heard while there.kept you on edge ..but I moved back north where I'm from Milwaukee . when I got out after I lived on highway 9 out by thunder bird lake ..I missed my family so I came back to Milwaukee and now I look at life in a whole different way than when I was in granite . OSR. Life lessons .at age 19 nobody could tell me nothing .. I'll be 60 this year .so it's been a while since I first walked through those front gates in granite .thank you for taking the time to film this for the public you just never know what kind of history there is in a place ..thank you .. peace
It's been awhile since I've been there but it is a charming little town. They had some good antique stores downtown area. Looks pretty empty now. There would have been gas stations along that highway 9. It was a major highway. It's amazing to think what Wiley did. Convicted felon, one eye and poor. He defied all odds. SW OK goes thru periods of extreme drought. Lake altus luger was down so low a few years back that it exposed the town it was built over. The last few years or so the rain has been good. That's why it's more green.

Steve, Great video and cool to see the personal connection to your family. Interesting to see. I grew up about 80 miles away in Lawton, OK. I’m familiar with southwest OK. Hot in summer and can be cold in winter.

@@TheGraveyardChannel Also another interesting fact about Greer County where you are. It used to be part of Texas. A supreme Court ruling decided that it was actually part of Oklahoma and not Texas. So literally people who lived there for many years as Texas Citizens became Okies. I'm not sure how long your family had been there to know if they were part of it.

I always thought about having my epitaph read, “Most Annoying St. Louis Cardinals Fan Ever.” Lol. My grandmother graduated from high school back in 1927. She used to have a brick in her house from the high school she attended. I had a grandfather graduate from high school in 1921. Have a great weekend.

I follow 3 gravesite channels and I have never seen the host show us the personal family member’s resting places. Not mention back history, locations and photos. I applaud you, and thank you for showing the “Famous Graves” If your family.

Visiting Gravesites With Steve ~ I have watched it. As it started, I had mixed emotions. But, long about the 3rd episode it started growing on me. There’s A LOT of new characters of course and that did take some getting used to. Laura Linney’s character was a bit off in the beginning as well (because of the writing) but, that started smoothing out eventually. Overall, I think you’ll love it as I did. It will definitely make you think back on the originals. And, I can tell you now, you will definitely go back and watch them again. If you think about it, come back and let me know what you think after you watch the new series.
A very nice video and a personal one as well, this trip was truly a trip down memory lane. The wind did spoil the sound a bit so I activated the subtitle button and problem solved. Interesting! I cut away from the video to quickly research a little on Granite. Seems it was impacted during the dust bowl event of the 1930s, although not as significantly as areas like the OK panhandle. And population? Since it opened, the prison inmates have always been counted into the population - 1000 to 1200 consistently. So the “population” is about 800 currently. I do not have family that I can visit, so I always appreciate when others share their recollections. Thanks, Steve!

@@TheGraveyardChannel I'm from granite. It's a really nice town. I know the people who made some of those head stones. It's so awesome to see a video about granite, not a lot of people know about that town because it is so small. I graduated in 2019 and there was 24 of us graduating. In all I think there was about 200 -250 people in granite high school. The school was from Pre-K to 12th grade.
For those that don't know, Wiley Post was the pilot that crashed the plane that killed him and Will Rogers, in Alaska. they pushed on when they were warned not to, nobody's sure exactly what happened, probably something to do with a weather front that was known to be moving in.
by the way, Wiley and Will were old friends from way back. They'd traveled together a lot, flown all over the country. But when you fly in Alaska, it can be too much for even the most seasoned pilot. Freak storms at altitude are common. You can't always go over them or around them, especially not back then when there was no real way to see what you might be flying into. Civilian aircraft did not have radar back then. It only started getting put in military craft during WW2

I love small towns like Granite. We have smaller towns around in my district such as Thoona, Boorahman, Dookie all rural agricultural towns. There's a town called Eldorado which is a goldfield town and gemstones. Nice and peaceful town there.
Some of the sayings were a riot. Still trying to think of a good one for my "stone". Have seen many and one of my favorites was the one with "Boy, it's dark down here". The headstones at Granite Cemetary were really beautiful and loved the tour you did of your family's home town and the pictures you shared. Over the years, my sister and I used to visit various homes we grew up in and those of our parents, bringing back many happy memories. Thanks for sharing, as always, Steve. The guy watching you was a little off putting but I've watched various videos and seen that this is not unusual. Just always be alert. Years ago I wouldn't have thought anything of it but I feel today you have to be careful. Parking so close to you is odd to say the least.

Nice little town. It’s pretty cool you got to see the Oklahoma State Reformatory where your Great Grandfather worked. Nice cemetery for such a small town. Interesting family history. Just wondering what made them decide to pick up roots and move to California because they went from a small quiet town to California....big difference.

Living in small town has it perks. However; everyone knows everyone & their business. I was raised on 80 acres, so had cows, pigs, horses & various other animals. U learn so much & don't know how much until later. Ater I grew up, lived in city over 30 yrs & finally moved back to small town pop 279. I'll take small town over the city. Be ready for the gossip. Wish u had have pointed out ur aunt Mae.

Later on they moved to Southern Indiana and other relatives followed them or were born and raised there. Meanwhile my parents and grandparents (and most of my great grandparents kids) stayed in the area and I was born and raised in a suburb about 10 minutes from the downtown area (so close in fact I could see the skyline). During the summer we would often go and spend weekends with my great grand parents and other relatives who lived in the area and it was a big difference. Small town America is something I wasn't familiar with on a day to day basis and going to visit my relatives was a huge awakening. Recently many of the living relatives (the grandchildren and great grandchildren and so forth of my great grandparents or their brothers and sisters) came out for a family reunion and even though we are all from different places we had a lot to share. The Southern Indiana relatives have a southern twang, the local relatives talk like that old Da Bears skit but it's all good. We often never realize how important family is until it's too late. The funny sayings are great, my cousins in Southern Indiana have graces for my one cousin who died and preplanned for theirs and they have funny sayings. It's a nice way to look at death.

Howdy Steve!! Glad you found your family. I live in Wichita Falls, Texas you should come and visit our cemetery here. My husband doesn't like visiting cemeteries, sometime I should go and visit myself, I like taking flowers and placing them on a child's grave. Have an awesome day!

In the early 80' I was in that reformatory not a good time in my life but a learning lesson for sure ..all the people of granite were good people ..I knew there was a lot of history there some of the stories I heard while there.kept you on edge ..but I moved back north where I'm from Milwaukee . when I got out after I lived on highway 9 out by thunder bird lake ..I missed my family so I came back to Milwaukee and now I look at life in a whole different way than when I was in granite . OSR. Life lessons .at age 19 nobody could tell me nothing .. I'll be 60 this year .so it's been a while since I first walked through those front gates in granite .thank you for taking the time to film this for the public you just never know what kind of history there is in a place ..thank you .. peace

It's been awhile since I've been there but it is a charming little town. They had some good antique stores downtown area. Looks pretty empty now. There would have been gas stations along that highway 9. It was a major highway. It's amazing to think what Wiley did. Convicted felon, one eye and poor. He defied all odds. SW OK goes thru periods of extreme drought. Lake altus luger was down so low a few years back that it exposed the town it was built over. The last few years or so the rain has been good. That's why it's more green.

@@TheGraveyardChannel Also another interesting fact about Greer County where you are. It used to be part of Texas. A supreme Court ruling decided that it was actually part of Oklahoma and not Texas. So literally people who lived there for many years as Texas Citizens became Okies. I'm not sure how long your family had been there to know if they were part of it.

I always thought about having my epitaph read, “Most Annoying St. Louis Cardinals Fan Ever.” Lol. My grandmother graduated from high school back in 1927. She used to have a brick in her house from the high school she attended. I had a grandfather graduate from high school in 1921. Have a great weekend.

I follow 3 gravesite channels and I have never seen the host show us the personal family member’s resting places. Not mention back history, locations and photos. I applaud you, and thank you for showing the “Famous Graves” If your family.

Visiting Gravesites With Steve ~ I have watched it. As it started, I had mixed emotions. But, long about the 3rd episode it started growing on me. There’s A LOT of new characters of course and that did take some getting used to. Laura Linney’s character was a bit off in the beginning as well (because of the writing) but, that started smoothing out eventually. Overall, I think you’ll love it as I did. It will definitely make you think back on the originals. And, I can tell you now, you will definitely go back and watch them again. If you think about it, come back and let me know what you think after you watch the new series.
A very nice video and a personal one as well, this trip was truly a trip down memory lane. The wind did spoil the sound a bit so I activated the subtitle button and problem solved. Interesting! I cut away from the video to quickly research a little on Granite. Seems it was impacted during the dust bowl event of the 1930s, although not as significantly as areas like the OK panhandle. And population? Since it opened, the prison inmates have always been counted into the population - 1000 to 1200 consistently. So the “population” is about 800 currently.
I do not have family that I can visit, so I always appreciate when others share their recollections. Thanks, Steve!

@@TheGraveyardChannel I'm from granite. It's a really nice town. I know the people who made some of those head stones. It's so awesome to see a video about granite, not a lot of people know about that town because it is so small. I graduated in 2019 and there was 24 of us graduating. In all I think there was about 200 -250 people in granite high school. The school was from Pre-K to 12th grade.

For those that don't know, Wiley Post was the pilot that crashed the plane that killed him and Will Rogers, in Alaska. they pushed on when they were warned not to, nobody's sure exactly what happened, probably something to do with a weather front that was known to be moving in.
by the way, Wiley and Will were old friends from way back. They'd traveled together a lot, flown all over the country. But when you fly in Alaska, it can be too much for even the most seasoned pilot. Freak storms at altitude are common. You can't always go over them or around them, especially not back then when there was no real way to see what you might be flying into. Civilian aircraft did not have radar back then. It only started getting put in military craft during WW2

I love small towns like Granite. We have smaller towns around in my district such as Thoona, Boorahman, Dookie all rural agricultural towns. There's a town called Eldorado which is a goldfield town and gemstones. Nice and peaceful town there.

Some of the sayings were a riot. Still trying to think of a good one for my "stone". Have seen many and one of my favorites was the one with "Boy, it's dark down here". The headstones at Granite Cemetary were really beautiful and loved the tour you did of your family's home town and the pictures you shared. Over the years, my sister and I used to visit various homes we grew up in and those of our parents, bringing back many happy memories. Thanks for sharing, as always, Steve. The guy watching you was a little off putting but I've watched various videos and seen that this is not unusual. Just always be alert. Years ago I wouldn't have thought anything of it but I feel today you have to be careful. Parking so close to you is odd to say the least.

Nice little town. It’s pretty cool you got to see the Oklahoma State Reformatory where your Great Grandfather worked. Nice cemetery for such a small town. Interesting family history. Just wondering what made them decide to pick up roots and move to California because they went from a small quiet town to California....big difference.
it was during the great depression and the dust bowl. it was probably impossible for my grandmother and her siblings to find work there, so they moved to california, the land of milk and honey :-) and i think my great grandparents just eventually followed their kids, to be near them. they were all very close. thanks for the great comment, sue!

Purgatory, heaven whatever you believe. My Mom visits me when I need her the most, it's cool. I live in Arizona and when it's really hot and a refreshing breeze comes out of nowhere, I say " thanks mom."
Living in small town has it perks. However; everyone knows everyone & their business. I was raised on 80 acres, so had cows, pigs, horses & various other animals. U learn so much & don't know how much until later.
Ater I grew up, lived in city over 30 yrs & finally moved back to small town pop 279. I'll take small town over the city. Be ready for the gossip.
