    Papa Lazarou is the most terrifying character of all time. Very creative to have used minstrel makeup for him too. Minstrels are terrifying, racism is terrifying and Papa Lazarou is the most twisted, terrifying thing that has ever happened. I won't spoil what Papa Lazarou gets up to... but he can indeed "do things". Don't open the door to anyone looking for Dave.

      Even papa Lazarou is driven out of Royston Vasey because he was too scared. Says a lot.

      It was based on the old landlord of Reece shearsmith and Steve pemberton I think. He used to call round saying hello Steve, refuse to speak to reece, and say this is just a saga now etc

    I'm lucky enough to have lived and grown up around where this series was filmed. I've even hiked up to where the "Local" shop was. It's sadly not real.

    My all time favourite comedy show I hope you enjoyed it. I was lucky enough to be an extra in season three working in the same space as my comedy hero’s for a day 👌🏻

    This is the series that introduces the real Royston Vasey. He plays the mayor. (That's Roy "chubby" Brown's real name.)

    You've probably got this a lot, but you need to react to 'inside no 9' its like black mirror but with a little more humour, brilliant show that's still running.

    I don't know if you got the "buying pegs" reference as I'm unsure if there is anything like it in the states, but growing up I remember we often had Gypsies turning up at the door and they would generally be selling wooden "dolly" pegs or bunches of Heather - funny as it grew everywhere localy to us 🤣 which was only a few miles from Marsden Moor where the outside of the local shop was filmed (rest of Royston Vasey is Hadfield? maybe, in Derbyshire anyway)

      Selling pegs and “lucky” heather is the usual trade of the Romani gypsies, Irish Travellers usually offer paving and roofing services.

    The second series is definitely my favourite of this grotesque gem of a show. I am very interested to see what you think of the third series - I happen to love it, but it's certainly a controversial one as the format is switched up alot.

    The character Papa Lazarou was derived from Peter Papalazarou, who was the landlord of a flat in which Reece Shearsmith and Steve Pemberton lived, where he would ask for Steve even if Reece was the only one there.

    Probably my favourite comedy of all time. Horror, comedy and sex all in one twisted mash up of bizarreness. The 4 writers/actors are geniuses. The film is bloody brilliant too plus the live show (on dvd). Herr Lipp on stage getting an audience member to do stuff. Oh my god!!!

    A couple of interesting facts about this episode- 1. One of the incredibly rare disagreements between the members of the League of Gentlemen happened over whether Benjamin should be dressed as Baloo from the jungle book film in this episode 2. For most of this episode Benjamin is actually played by the fourth writer of the League of Gentlemen Jeremy Dyson who would occasionally double for Reece Shearsmith as they are almost identical heights and build

    The guys didn't have race in mind when they conceived Papa Lazarou, they were just thinking of gypsies and freaky circus make-up, but I can see how it can be misconstrued as racist through a modern lens. Having been a fan of this show since the 90's it never occurred to me that he could be a racially sensitive character until recently as I just saw him as a freaky circus guy.
    Love your reactions though :)

    Always thought Papa Lazarou was meant to look like evil clown face paint, more than anything else. (Still, I do like the irony of all these far-left comedians now getting bitten by the agendas they've been pushing for years and years.)

    • @thedukeofnuts
      @thedukeofnuts 2 года назад +2

      Agreed. One of the writers did state unequivocally that Papa Lazarou isn't a "blackface" character.

    • @nellsun2521
      @nellsun2521 2 года назад

      @@thedukeofnuts Yep. If it was supposed to be "blackface" you'd think he'd be doing some kind of a black accent, but he sounds Spanish to me. He's also a Traveller, which isn't traditionally a black thing. At first I actually thought the "racial warning" was in regards to Gypsies or something. Crazy BBC BS.
