When I worked at Stockport Daw Bank bus depot we started programming the electronic destination boards on the buses with a secret 13x Royston Vasey Local Service destination display option.
When the drivers discovered it many started using it instead of Sorry Not In Service when between duties.
After a couple of weeks this mysterious 13x bus had featured on the letters page of a couple of local newspapers, at least one of whom contacted the company for a comment.
Management were not amused and we got a memo from them informing us that technically we'd broken regulations by advertising a non-existent service and the X13 option was to be removed from all destination boards as and when each bus was due a software update.
It was fun while it lasted.

One of the darkest slices of British Black Comedy in existence. And one of my absolute favourite television shows of all time. The writers based a lot of the characters on people they met. Reece Sheersmith based Pauline the jobcentre lady on a real woman who ran the jobclub in Hull. I freaked on finding this out as I live in Hull, I went to that jobclub and met her! It was only when I rewatched the series, that I could see all her traits exaggerated, just not that much :p

There are short and long story arcs that become interconnected thematically over the 4 seasons of the show. The writers all love old horror, dark comedy, Python, tales of the unexpected and so on - so they wanted to create a universe in the town of Royston Vasey where magic, horror, incest, cannibalism all co exists .

Just finished rewatching the whole series and live shows, always a classic! It's definitely anything but random. As the series progresses you will find how the stories of each character (or set of characters) bear relevance to their previous appearances. Series 3 is brilliantly done as each episode is shown from different characters perspectives over the same time period, ultimately culminating in a single event linking them all together. This show is just masterfully written and the 3 main actors have such an incredible range of talent that brings all their characters to life.

The 3 dudes play all the charaters. Each sketch will introduce you to some of the many freaks who live or pass through crazy town of Royston vasey. As the series goes on the indivudual stories somewhat interconnect with an overarching Theme. But not always. Its british comedy at its finest but very dark and twisted. I actually had the pleasure of seeing thier live interactive theatre show and some characters are so creepy and they walked up the isles of the theatre scaring the hell out of the audience that you might be picked to " join them " on stage

  • @leehallam9365

There are three main cast members, they play all but a few parts, they are also the writers along with the fourth member of the team. Each set of characters have continuing stories, and sometimes they interact. Babs the taxi driver is a character that provides some of the links. It is the story of a small working class town in the hills of northern Englznd. It was filmed in Hadfield, which is about 8 or 9 miles away from where I live. It is a work of genius, but you need to tune in to it as it is so different.

I wish you luck with this (but it's brilliant) yes the stories have common threads, and are continuing though the series with sometimes two or three sections in each episode. The basic jokes are about inbreeding, local isolationism and failure to embrace progress. The team always have a very dark edge to their humour, so sort of like The Addams Family on Elm Street interpreted by Monty Python. The exposition of characters makes this first episode a bit disorientating, but as the threads are developed things will become more familiar. Keep going!!

League of Gentlemen !! Next thing, here you are :) Stick with it, I think you will like it. Written by Mark Gatiss, Steve Pemberton, Reece Shearsmith and Jeremy Dyson. (I never realised until I looked on Wiki, that part of it was filmed in the Town where I was born in West Yorkshire, a Local town). Mark Gattis wrote and has acted in some of the Dr Who episodes, Sherlock (Sherlock Holmes as played by Benedict Cumberbatch with Martin Freeman, Una Stubbs, Rupert Graves) written alongside Stephen Moffat (Dr Who). He also wrote for Game of Thrones & Dracula. Pemberton & Sheersmith are brilliant writers who also created Psychoville and the fantastic series of single stories Inside No.9 (def worth a watch especially the (almost) silent one). These are a bunch of actors / writers very much in the vein of Monty Python but possibly a bit more sophisticated.

Sadly this brilliant show is barely repeated these days due to a character that has been perceived as being "black face", but it wasn't depicting someone of colour. It's suffered because of it, and you may get some negative commments/feedback from viewers and perhaps RUclips. However the writers (the three main cast members and another guy who didn't want to be on TV) defend the character stringently
‘It was not me doing a black man,’ Reece insisted. ‘It was always this clown-like make-up and we just came up with what we thought was the scariest idea to have in a sort of Child Catcher-like way

EB you're reaction is totally normal😂it's weird alright but funny in that is so strange I believe the plot essentially is strangers are viewed as dangerous to their bizarre closed off existence, it's certainly no 'Still Game' but provides some strange very different humour. You poor fella🤣 that was a baptism of fire Sir🤣✌️🍻

love this show! I live about ten miles away from the village of Hadfield where it was filmed. If you're ever in Manchester (UK) it's well worth heading east into the Peak District, brooding hills and moorlands. Bleak but beautiful at the same time. Great for hiking!

This is like one of those nightmares one has that upon awakening leave you spending the rest of the day trying remember it and peice it together.
It felt sinister but you don't know why and it makes no sense.

Over the course of series 1 and 2 much of this does ultimately weave together into a narrative of sorts but about 50% is still essentially standalone sketches with recurring characters.
Series 3 is individual stories featuring specific groups of characters.

Definitely one of the best dark comedy series made.
Another one I'd recommend for you to review is 'The Mighty Boosh' from the mid '00s, also 'The Young Ones' from the early '80s and 'Bottom' from the '90s - all BBC shows.
