Our dog always barks at us when we try to watch tv so I tried the same tactic Zak uses when she's in the crate & he's talking to the camera. We turned on a show that we've seen before so it wasn't really one that we needed to hear & I kept the treats on the couch next to me where our dog couldn't get them. We started "watching" the show & every time he stopped barking, I quickly looked at him, said "yes, shhhh, quiet" and tossed him a treat. By the end of the 30 min episode he was laying quietly & not barking at all. We've continued practicing "shhhh, quiet" in other scenarios where he starts barking at us & he's doing great with almost no barking now. When he does start barking, he responds very well to our command for quiet & we're much less stressed, lol. Thanks for all the great videos, Zak! ^_^

Not all aussies are like this. I have had one fire 8 years who only barked when the bell rang or if someone walked parts our house(so not too bad). We recently got one who barks at pretty much the same things he does. Sometimes an owner has experience with a breed, but when they get another one it is completely different. Aussies can be trained very easily though if you do it right. They are stubborn, but you just need to bond with them and find out with works for not only them but you.

The top thing I’ve learned it how QUICKLY you’re meant to reward the behaviour you want, giving little to no time for failure. Growing up it was always to wait and see if they genuinely understood, but with my new puppy I’ve been rewarding the behaviours I want to see as quickly as I can and I’m seeing amazing outcomes! She’s confused by the reward at first but catches on very quickly as to why she’s being rewarded.

Yeah same here. It's amazing how clever they are, they just don't have as long attention spans as we do and they live in the moment so if you're not quick they've already moved onto the next stimulus and action in their head. I got a 6 week old puppy and in 1 day I taught him his name and to always "come". It's amazing how quickly they learn when you listen to the advice of good dog trainers.

Your positive, common sense approach to integrating our puppy into our home has been extremely helpful. I refer back to these videos frequently when our Corgi seems to be struggling with a behavior. I personally love that my Ruby barks when someone knocks on the door or rings the door bell. One of the biggest reasons people own a dog is for security. They are 100 times better than any electronic home security system. Sometimes she barks a bit too much though. She just one of those very vocal dogs, but for the most part she quiets down when I tell her to. Its kind of tricky to teach your dog to bark at things but yet limit the barking. Ruby and I are a team and I never want her to think that I do not appreciate her input. :) If you would like to see my dog she is the star of my youtube channel. Would appreciate any likes and subscribers.

I have a 7-month-old chihuahua, and she's extremely yappy. As soon as I take her outside to do her business, she jumps out the door barking -- fully prepared for anything she may find to bark at, even if there's nothing. The fun part is when at times she wants to go out at 3:00 a.m. to do her business and is barking as soon as she heads out the door. This wakes up the neighbor's kids and she let's me know about it. Of course, when that happens, there's a mess in my floor if I don't take her out, the neighbor's kids get rudely awaken if I do take her out. I'm open to suggestions.

these are just some notes for myself, ignore this!
    exercise 1
    - get their attention before they bark
    - reassure/guide them if they are anxious
    - teach them the treat won't be given instantly
    - acknowledge restraint, no matter how small
    - pull treat away if they bark
    - if you are teaching a new skill, ignore barks
    - keep eye contact with you, not the treat
    - slowly push for longer periods of silence: 5, 7, 10, etc.
    - if they bark before they're supposed to, take a step back
    - just focus on basic communication, not really finetuning
    exercise 2
    - start small
    - gradually work you way up
    - vary the scenarios you train in:
    -- in the crate
    -- at the door
    - in total, 3-4 weeks of training
    alternative outlets
    - 20 min walk
    - engaging chew toys
    - 20-30 min of fetch

Plenty of treats, very tasty treats, just a boiled chicken breast boosted with bullion and shreaded.. Every time you see them calm and quiet, reward them. That is the tool to reinforce that behavior. Engage them in the behavior you want. Pull them out of laziness to work. They are a working breed, put them to work and they will love you. In them the love of God is demonstrated in that they are free from prejudice and keep no record of wrong. I ache over the loss of our purebred border collie not yet 4. She had only just matured. At first we thought she might be too much for us, but she was just what we needed. She came to us from a friend in Church.
“Naked I came from my mother’s womb, And naked I shall return. The LORD gave and the LORD has taken away. Blessed be the name of the LORD.” Job 1:21

Hi, I'm from India, a small part of it where there is no caring for dogs available. I and some of my friends somehow managed to create an NGO specially for the stray dogs because there condition is so bad and they are so much mistreated that the scenario is unimaginable. We are only a group of teens with no help from any parts. We're trying our best to do here.. but it's so much difficult because we cannot find anyone helping us in anyway. We have been running as a dog-society service for 2 and 1/2 months now. We're trying to reduce hit and run cases which happens almost everyday here.. we had relocated 5 dogs which are mixed breed and Indian breed basically. People here only tend to have liking towards good looking dogs which are pedigrees namely retrvers, labs, saint Bernards, great danes etc. But the issue here is so much out of hand we are not able to do much. We have only one veterinary hospital with no equipments or any machine.. we don't even have a proper hospital.. it's just a little chamber with the doctors table and the floor where each and every dog is treated without maintaining any sort of hygiene. We have several dogs here with genital cancer. We've so far been able to treat only one dog where the medicine was given to us at a free cost given to what the condition of the dog was. I've been trying to reach as much people as I can, but I've never received any kind of help or support to back us up. I'm definitely going to buy your book so we can give people some puppies who are pretty much trained. Even if you couldn't reach my comment, I'm just happy to see people like you doing such amazing things in other parts. And I just wanted to add a little bit of thanks to everything. From all the members of PAWWS we are very much greatful for your videos.. it helps us a lot.
