Exactly 2 years ago my mom's b day, we found a scrawny lil hummer in the backyard with a hurt wing. We named it Jarvas and my mom took it upon herself to nurse it back to health. Once he started flying again we released em. About a month later a hummingbird starts hovering near my mom while we're outside. She does a little whistle and it stays hovering right next to her. I'm sure that hummer was Jarvas coming by to thank my mom for taking care of him.
I was fortunate to raise a rescue baby bird once and it came back year after year to have her babies in our backyard. Right next to our patio set where she learned to fly. Such a blessing.
That's great. What I've noticed is that if I spend a lot of time on my porch, four feet away from my feeders, they get to know me and anywhere I go in my neighborhood I'll get buzzed by them. Same thing with Eddie who was staying downstairs for a few months. I haven't been on my porch for a few months, cooler weather. I was helping the neighbor right next door. No visits. That was more curious. If one of 'em gets inside my house I net it with a black t-shirt. They go into this death pose wings akimbo, you feel like Elmer Fudd, "I've killt the poo wittle..." The first few times I thought it's dead for sure. But one of those feet was still hanging on to the window, the t-shirt.. So I took it outside. Up and gone. Unless they were inside for a while, then it's a quick hop to the feeder. The next day, a bit like you mom's experience, if I'm in the backyard I'll get a visit withing a couple of feet. But after one day no more. Tip if you do find a hummer that's exhausted of course get them outside. If they're too weak get them some sugar water, just make a quick slurry. They don't seem to understand the concept of a puddle, so make a hole in a card or something, a little red ink around it. It is oft said that hummingbirds are always a couple hours away from starving to death. One friend told me about one that fell in water and probably died of hypothermia a few minutes later. But they also fly really fast, and can cover 50 or more miles a day.
A few yrs ago I found a hummer that got in my garage & couldn't find his way out. He was tired & hot & had given up. I gently picked him up & put his beak into my feeder. He drank & drank until he got his strength back. He flew out of my hand & I was happy to tears that I was able to help this beautiful little bird. A tip try not to leave anything red/orange exposed in your open garage where they might fly in & get trapped. My garage door emergency pull cords were red & that was drawing them in so I spray painted them black.
Hummingbirds make their nests with spider webs as an important ingredient. That way, the nest will actually stretch and expand to accommodate the growing babies.
One came into my apartment (cathedral ceilings) and I assumed it was gathering my nice supply of spider webs for its nest (didn't know they did this) but it got its feet tangled up and slide down the wall. I tried warm water to get the webs off but was afraid, the tugging would hurt the bird. Ran it to the vet, she gently pulled everything off, brought it home and released it. This was the second hummingbird I have rescued. Love..love..love them.
My wife and I witnessed something amazing last weekend. We have an enclosed deck about 20'x20' covered in flowers. We have had one Rufous male ever since we hung the feeder. He fights off all hummers looking for a flower snack or a quick drink from his feeder. But last weekend my wife was out there working and she heard somebody new and a call that she never heard before. The male (Zippy) brought one of his offspring to our garden and left him/her there all day. He would come back and check in on him about every 10 or 15 minutes showing him the flowers and the feeder to eat from. He even flew right up to my wife within 12 inches from her and hovered for a moment while facing junior as to say "don't worry about them they are safe" seriously. Then at the end of the day, Zippy after 3 attempts got him to fallow him home for the night at least that is how it appeared. Next morning Junior is back and this time he is drinking from the feeder like a big little hummer. Then Zip taught him to defend the yard they danced around each other dad talking to him how to fly defensively. Then dad left but continued to check in now and then and Junior began to defend his new territory against the adult birds. He ran them all off. Its been a few days now and they both pop in and out. Friendly to us but Dare you if you are another Hummer. We were truly Blessed to see something like this. Recognize the world for what it is a Garden.
Hello from the future. Beautiful story. I once had a hummer land on my shoulder as I was hanging a feeder at my sisters house. She has at least a dozen that frequent her home. They are friendly and I think they know we are not going to harm them!
While sitting on my patio I saw baby hummingbirds leave their nest for the first time. At first I wasn't sure what I was seeing they looked like bumble bees but, then they took off like a bullet. I felt so lucky to have witnessed their first flight. I've loved watching birds my whole life.

While sitting on my patio once again I witnessed a Raven trying to eat baby crows in a nest. Oh my God the mama sent out a call and crows came from all around swalking like I've never heard before. They all chased the Raven off but, it did take awhile. I could actually see the Raven ripping and eating the babies. Made me a little sick to my stomach. Man the crows were swooping down to the Raven as a team. Must've had about 20-30 crows all screaming at the hawk. It was crazy loud.

Crows came from all over swooping down attacking the Raven I've never heard so many crow screaming and chased it away to protect their babies. Just the other day I saw a couple dozen Red Tailed Hawks circling just to the right of my house. I do live on the outer edges of town. A huge white Owl swooped down an grabbed a finch right in front of me. Felt bad I had Bird feeders out. I've got hummingbirds here all winter so I feed them too.

@@jannelson4946 he is very funny for as rough & tumble as he is, my dog will do very gentle, compassionate things- the wildest thing was a few months ago, he was on a trail with me and he kept closing in on this elderly Chinese couple. I told him to wait, but he just kept looking back & edging towards them. Finally, he gets up to the man and nudges his hand. He stops, looks down at Jimi, whois looking right into his face. The man lights up like a little kid as I am telling his wife "He is very friendly, no worries." It became obvious he was suffering from dementia or something- he was petting my head and speaking in Mandarin (his wife was apologizing, but I was not upset), just smiling. Some how that crazy dog knew it. We stayed a minute, said goodbye and parted ways waving & smiling
They can memorize 300 different feeding locations 💓 It’s so worth leaving a bird feeder on my balcony. They once left a feather behind. It was smaller than my smallest fingernail. They are so small and wonderful creatures. Thank you for sharing!!! 💛

The hummingbirds that would feed at the feeder, would tap on the window to let me know it needed cleaned and filled. When I fed them, I would stand still for a few minutes with my finger to land on while they ate. I could barely feel them.

I have had many hummingbird experiences for over 50 years, from rescuing a wounded baby one on a beach while boating, my dad let the boat run all night to keep it warm and in the morning we took it back to where my brother found it and let it go... to, one coming into my bedroom just after my dad past way many years later, I used a shirt and it let me cup it in my hands and looked right into my eyes. With countless other incredible stories of other times. I seem to be going through a very painful time, as we all do, and just finding your channel and this beautiful piece is amazingly healing for me!! Thank you!!
I have a nest on my patio, on a lighbulb on my string of lights! They babies are 15 days old today!!! I wish I could have video like this. Henrietta and her babies Eloise and Zakariyya have been miracles for me throughout the lockin. I love them so much!! Thank you for sharing this!

Why is it weird that the video is 5 years old? I don't understand why people seem to think there's an expiration date, or it's no longer "cool" or valid after a certain period of time. I can almost guarantee that the people who have watched this vid did not get it on their recommended because they binge bird videos (except for a few possibly). Also commonly a bunch people get recommended the same video all at the same time even if the video was uploaded far from the time that everyone finally finds it.

They are bringing food back up from their stomachs, into the babies mouths. You see how the babies automatically lengthen their necks. The mothers' muscles contract to regurgitate the food into the babies esophagus & stomach. It's like us throwing up. It's involuntary, triggered by the babies' cries & going for their mouths. Gotta trust that nature knows what it's doing!!!
How I wish we have hummingbirds here in the Philippines. When I visited California, hummingbirds are very common, and some houses even feed them with sugary water. Thank you for posting.

I stumbled upon your video while looking for more info on the life cycle of hummingbirds. A nest was cut down in our backyard by accident by the landscapers, but 2 babies were saved after we repositioned the next. Mama bird returned and has been feeding and tending to them. I am hopeful they'll make it. Thank you for such a beautiful video...what a joy to watch!

I agree. My husband could not work the last 3 years of his life. He'd sit outside or work on his shop in the summer. The little hummingbirds would always check him out. A few weeks before he passed away, he held his arm/hand out cuz they were buzzing around. One perched on his finger. At the cemetery, after the dedication of his gravesite, 2 little hummingbirds came to drink from all the beautiful flowers. When I see a hummingbird, I always think of my darling husband and how much he loved those little birds too. 😍

Amazing footage. Perfect choice of music .. it made me cry ! Reminded me of a few years ago when I had the extreme good fortune of watching this process up close and personal. The nest was built on a low enough branch of a willow tree for me to see the nest from a safe enough distance for the mother not to be upset.. We had plenty of hummingbird food sources in our garden and yard. And she loved to drink the tiny water droplets from the tips of the willow leaves after a light misting from the hose (on the other side of the tree of course... away from the nest. ) I watched the mother building the nest .. Then just sitting .. and sitting .. After some time there were the frequent trips to feed.. seeing their tiny heads just above the rim at first.. Then as they got bigger a better view. Finally they fledged.. Not that great of flyers on the first try, but they got the hang of it soon enough.. I was happy they both fledged safely, but sad to see them leave the nest I had watched with awe for weeks .. This video brought it all back.. Thank you ! : ]
Is it ok and safe for them? Its winter here but it seems like the birds stick around. I get the same ones and one of them circles me and comes up to me often and I wanna do something nice for him. It's not toxic right? From the dryer sheets or detergent
heather zirkle yes, dryer sheets are toxic. Although it’s a nice gesture, unless this person is using a very mild non-toxic detergent with no fragrance/chemicals and no dryer sheets, they may be doing more harm than good.
Thank you! I have my first hummingbird feeder this year and I have two regulars. I assumed they were a couple. I hope they'll being their babies to my feeder. I sit outside after work each day and enjoy watching them come and go. It makes my day.
Yes, they are so hard working fluttering and eating that nectar that it really gets me going in the morning. I change out the nectar every 3 days and can tell when I put new and cold nectar in the feeder in the hot summers (Arizona). I now added a bougainvillea to grow up a trellis and am looking for a birdbath with a solar fountain in it to give them some swimming. I have one family with two little ones. They are unafraid of me and just sit there and drink. I hope they will find a spot to build a nest but I go in and out and may disturb them.
My entire life my family has had feeders up for these darlings. My grandma had them, my mom was a bird watcher and we had multiple feeders. I remember a photo I took when we lived on "Apple Hill" in.CA. That area of Apple Hill was known for having thousands of acres of apple trees, wine grapes and christmas trees. So there were tons of flowering plants for them to get nectar.We had a huge plate glass window with a quart size feeder there, plus 2 more around the home. I took some pics from inside right up to the glass , there was 41 hummers at that feeder just kind of swarming it. I used to lay in the sun a lot there and had to put up my very long hair because it was in the way. I used a red old fashioned "railroad " bandanna folded to a wide strip in the back and tied a knot at the top of my head. So there were 2 bright red ends sticking up in the air. They would land on my head and also dive bomb me, so much enjoyment lifelong from these cuties.

This year I watched two Anna’s Hummingbirds being raised in a nest near my home. I have pictures of both parents - male and female - feeding the children.
I love hummingbirds, I got them to sit on my finger after they got used to me a friend said I was full of it when I told him, so I took a picture of me holding one in the palm of my hand and he started calling me the hummingbird whisperer.
My aunt when she was alive retrieved a baby that fell from the nest and ended up hand raising it in her home, her vet didn’t think he would live but he did. She said she would perch on her finger and she would hold him close to her face and he licked her cheek with his tongue. Eventually she turned him loose.
Felicity That’s sad, he probably did die but the Vet told her he wouldn’t live at all in her home but he did for a long time. She has passed away now too.

Y'know, when I was growing up I watched a lot of hummingbirds. Always a joy, if only because they were so brief; there and gone with a shimmer and a humm. I never knew they had such long tongues! It makes sense, when I think about it, but it just never clicked until this video.

I do the same thing. One of my regular Hummers perches in a tree and I lightly spray him for 10 minutes. He dances and flutters in the water spray. I'm always tired before he is.

Well I never thought I'd be crying over a bird video lol. We discovered a nest about 5 weeks ago when quarintine first started and the hummingbird babies seem to be full grown now. They haven't flown away yet but its going to be a bitter sweet moment when they do.

That is the funniest place for her to make a nest...no covering. I found a hummingbird nest last year in my yard...its sooooo delicate. I just love these Birds!

Wow. I’ve never seen hummingbirds that look like that? Here in Arizona they’re much tinier and iridescent and shiny in all sorts of colors. Reds, pinks, purple, orange, yellow. Very pretty, this one was so cute

Awesome! My paternal grandmother loved hummingbirds. She tried to raise one but not to much info was out there on raising them. Sadly it died. That baby bird was found on the ground back in the mid 60's. She love birds . Thank you for sharing this video. 💕

Man the crows were swooping down to the Raven as a team. Must've had about 20-30 crows all screaming at the hawk. It was crazy loud.

I did see a Raven raiding baby crow's nest eating the babies. Ugh it was sickening. Crows came from all over swooping down attacking the Raven I've never heard so many crow screaming and chased it away to protect their babies.
Just the other day I saw a couple dozen Red Tailed Hawks circling just to the right of my house. I do live on the outer edges of town. A huge white Owl swooped down an grabbed a finch right in front of me. Felt bad I had Bird feeders out.
I've got hummingbirds here all winter so I feed them too.

I told him to wait, but he just kept looking back & edging towards them. Finally, he gets up to the man and nudges his hand. He stops, looks down at Jimi, whois looking right into his face. The man lights up like a little kid as I am telling his wife "He is very friendly, no worries." It became obvious he was suffering from dementia or something- he was petting my head and speaking in Mandarin (his wife was apologizing, but I was not upset), just smiling. Some how that crazy dog knew it. We stayed a minute, said goodbye and parted ways waving & smiling

Best thing I ever did in my back yard is add humming bird feeders. They are fascinating creatures.
The hummingbirds that would feed at the feeder, would tap on the window to let me know it needed cleaned and filled. When I fed them, I would stand still for a few minutes with my finger to land on while they ate. I could barely feel them.

Not to sound like too much of a sap..... my eyes are steaming with tears! Thank you so very much for for this beautiful piece of work.... true art. I have had many hummingbird experiences for over 50 years, from rescuing a wounded baby one on a beach while boating, my dad let the boat run all night to keep it warm and in the morning we took it back to where my brother found it and let it go... to, one coming into my bedroom just after my dad past way many years later, I used a shirt and it let me cup it in my hands and looked right into my eyes. With countless other incredible stories of other times. I seem to be going through a very painful time, as we all do, and just finding your channel and this beautiful piece is amazingly healing for me!!

I can almost guarantee that the people who have watched this vid did not get it on their recommended because they binge bird videos (except for a few possibly). Also commonly a bunch people get recommended the same video all at the same time even if the video was uploaded far from the time that everyone finally finds it.

They are bringing food back up from their stomachs, into the babies mouths. You see how the babies automatically lengthen their necks. The mothers' muscles contract to regurgitate the food into the babies esophagus & stomach. It's like us throwing up. It's involuntary, triggered by the babies' cries & going for their mouths. Gotta trust that nature knows what it's doing!!!

I stumbled upon your video while looking for more info on the life cycle of hummingbirds. A nest was cut down in our backyard by accident by the landscapers, but 2 babies were saved after we repositioned the next. Mama bird returned and has been feeding and tending to them. I am hopeful they'll make it. Thank you for such a beautiful video...what a joy to watch!

I agree. My husband could not work the last 3 years of his life. He'd sit outside or work on his shop in the summer. The little hummingbirds would always check him out. A few weeks before he passed away, he held his arm/hand out cuz they were buzzing around. One perched on his finger. At the cemetery, after the dedication of his gravesite, 2 little hummingbirds came to drink from all the beautiful flowers. When I see a hummingbird, I always think of my darling husband and how much he loved those little birds too. 😍

Amazing footage. Perfect choice of music .. it made me cry ! Reminded me of a few years ago when I had the extreme good fortune of watching this process up close and personal. The nest was built on a low enough branch of a willow tree for me to see the nest from a safe enough distance for the mother not to be upset.. We had plenty of hummingbird food sources in our garden and yard. And she loved to drink the tiny water droplets from the tips of the willow leaves after a light misting from the hose (on the other side of the tree of course... away from the nest. ) I watched the mother building the nest .. Then just sitting .. and sitting .. After some time there were the frequent trips to feed.. seeing their tiny heads just above the rim at first.. Then as they got bigger a better view. Finally they fledged.. Not that great of flyers on the first try, but they got the hang of it soon enough.. I was happy they both fledged safely, but sad to see them leave the nest I had watched with awe for weeks .. This video brought it all back.. Thank you ! : ]
I save dryer lint to put it out at the feeders in the spring so they have nesting material.
Dog fur also works perfectly. It's insulating & water repellent.
It's why I always brush my dog outside and let the fur fly :P

Is it ok and safe for them? Its winter here but it seems like the birds stick around. I get the same ones and one of them circles me and comes up to me often and I wanna do something nice for him. It's not toxic right? From the dryer sheets or detergent
heather zirkle yes, dryer sheets are toxic. Although it’s a nice gesture, unless this person is using a very mild non-toxic detergent with no fragrance/chemicals and no dryer sheets, they may be doing more harm than good.
Thank you! I have my first hummingbird feeder this year and I have two regulars. I assumed they were a couple. I hope they'll being their babies to my feeder. I sit outside after work each day and enjoy watching them come and go. It makes my day.
Yes, they are so hard working fluttering and eating that nectar that it really gets me going in the morning. I change out the nectar every 3 days and can tell when I put new and cold nectar in the feeder in the hot summers (Arizona). I now added a bougainvillea to grow up a trellis and am looking for a birdbath with a solar fountain in it to give them some swimming. I have one family with two little ones. They are unafraid of me and just sit there and drink. I hope they will find a spot to build a nest but I go in and out and may disturb them.

My entire life my family has had feeders up for these darlings. My grandma had them, my mom was a bird watcher and we had multiple feeders. I remember a photo I took when we lived on "Apple Hill" in.CA. That area of Apple Hill was known for having thousands of acres of apple trees, wine grapes and christmas trees. So there were tons of flowering plants for them to get nectar.We had a huge plate glass window with a quart size feeder there, plus 2 more around the home. I took some pics from inside right up to the glass , there was 41 hummers at that feeder just kind of swarming it. I used to lay in the sun a lot there and had to put up my very long hair because it was in the way. I used a red old fashioned "railroad " bandanna folded to a wide strip in the back and tied a knot at the top of my head. So there were 2 bright red ends sticking up in the air. They would land on my head and also dive bomb me, so much enjoyment lifelong from these cuties.

I love hummingbirds, I got them to sit on my finger after they got used to me a friend said I was full of it when I told him, so I took a picture of me holding one in the palm of my hand and he started calling me the hummingbird whisperer.
I believe you. I've had them land on my shoulder from time to time while setting up their feeders.
My aunt when she was alive retrieved a baby that fell from the nest and ended up hand raising it in her home, her vet didn’t think he would live but he did. She said she would perch on her finger and she would hold him close to her face and he licked her cheek with his tongue. Eventually she turned him loose.
Felicity That’s sad, he probably did die but the Vet told her he wouldn’t live at all in her home but he did for a long time. She has passed away now too.

Seeing those little ones finally take flight. And fly was amazing and beautiful. The whole time I was on the edge of my seat screaming don't fall off. When I should have been worried about where my butt was gonna fall to. Y'know, when I was growing up I watched a lot of hummingbirds. Always a joy, if only because they were so brief; there and gone with a shimmer and a humm.

I do the same thing. One of my regular Hummers perches in a tree and I lightly spray him for 10 minutes. He dances and flutters in the water spray. I'm always tired before he is.

Well I never thought I'd be crying over a bird video lol. We discovered a nest about 5 weeks ago when quarintine first started and the hummingbird babies seem to be full grown now. They haven't flown away yet but its going to be a bitter sweet moment when they do.

Awesome! My paternal grandmother loved hummingbirds. She tried to raise one but not to much info was out there on raising them. Sadly it died. That baby bird was found on the ground back in the mid 60's. She love birds . Thank you for sharing this video. 💕
