Planes from Taipei(TaoYuan or SungShan) to Kaohsiung has had troubles cause those planes are really old, and the lines are not as valuable as international ones to airlines so they don’t usually upgrade their planes.
You can google FuSing(FuXing) Airpline and you’ll find out how ridiculous those accidents were.
One of the accident were the plane with issues prior having engine failure. And the pilot shut down the wrong engine without having cross checking with the copilot.

The statue at 16:00 is Xuantian Sangdi (He has lots of names actually, this one literally means the black sky god), a very high-level deity or god in Taoism. However, statues can be pretty similar when it comes to god, so I'm not sure if the other statutes you saw are of the same god.
The space in the confusion temple is for a special dance dedicated to the philosopher, often on his birthdays. It originated from the dance for high-ranking governmental officials since 1100-ish b.c., but it's now mainly for Confusions himself. The most famous confusion temple is in Tainan, a must-go for history lovers. The city itself tells the history of Taiwan!
Enjoy your stay down south, very different vibe from Taipei ;)

Thank you for visiting my hometown! This makes me very very homesick haha...there used to be domestic flights between Taipei and Kaohsiung, but apparently after the bullet train was built it's far more economical and just as fast, so naturally those airlines shifted their business focus to international routes.
Also, Taiwan used to be known for its world-class baseball teams that won championships in numerous international games. In fact, because they did such a good job at preventing and managing Covid entrance, they were pretty much the only place that still plays baseball games when all other countries were on lockdown.

Taiwan is the major source of computer microchip in the world I think or something like that, no wonder they have bullet trains like Japan, they have the easy access to technology, that 300km/ hr speed is the same the Italo train that ran from Rome to Amalfi or that route down south. If Taiwan is densely populated, I guess it makes sense to have trains than cars clogging the roads and highways. Maybe Texas does not meet the criteria to justify creating a bullet train.

    • @morrischen5777

Kaohsiung is a beautiful harbor city. The recommended bike routes are along the Love river, and along the bayside with several piers. Within the bay area, you could visit some renovated warehouses like pier-2 art center and KW2(Kaohsiung warehouse 2) which are connected by Big Harbor Bridge. You could also take 5-mintue Ferry to Cijin island. On this island, you could go uphill to the lighthouse and overlook the whole Kaohsiung harbor in a spectacular way. You would enjoy watching ships passing by for a long time...
Besides, you could also find nice beaches and delicious street food as well as various seafood. For transportation, you could take MRT or light rail especially. This light rail will take you travel through the bay area including above mentioned sightseeing spots, and also the city forests.
Hope you enjoy stay in Taiwan.

There used to planes...I use to travel by plane constantly for business from Taipei down to the south 20+ years ago. but after the high-speed rail was introduced ( 2007), domestic air travelers switched to HSR causing traveling by plane less viable. Anyway, You may want to go further down to Kenting National Park. Ali Mountain National Park in Cha-Yi also offers an amazing traveling experience as there are plenty of trees ranging from 1,000~3,000 years old.

Judging from the views from the rooftop of that apartment building, your airbnb must be located in Yancheng District of Kaohsiung, my birth place. That river is called Love River, and Taiwanese are passionate about baseball, I have been to that baseball stadium many times when I was a kid.
That “general” in Lotus Pond has many names but Xuanwu is probably the most well-known one. He is one of the most important Taoist deities who is in charge of the northern skies, so to simplify you can remember him as the god of the North Star. He is associated with snake and tortoise, one (collectively)of the four sacred animals in Taoism, so it’s easy to identify if any temple is dedicated to him or not.

The tropic of cancer passes through Chiayi in Taiwan. Kaohsiung is south of that , so the weather is more tropical there than in Taipei. You probably felt it was hotter there when you stepped out of the train. The warrior statue is called Xuantian Shangdi, a Taoist god ruling the north/water. While you are there, you can also take the train to Tainan, the neighboring city in the north with many historical sites. You can also travel south to Kending to enjoy the beautiful beach. The fee for ubike is 5 NTD per half an hour in Taipei. Make sure you return it when you are done or you might end up paying a lot more. Enjoy your trip down south :-)

HSR is not going through the whole island. There is a nice beach area in south called Kenting National Park, that you need to take about 1.5 ~ 2 hours bus to really reach to most south park of Taiwan. And Kenting is definitally a most famous tourist favorate like Taroko, like beach vs montain.

Chris and Carol, great videos you've made! Thanks for sharing the beauty of Taiwan to the world! Keep up the good work. Yes, as what you said, Taiwan is underrated. Our government should put more efforts on promoting Taiwan. If you have time, try to go from Puli, QingJing Farm, Mt. Hehuan, to Toroko Gorge, then all the way up back to the north. You'll get to see the most breathtaking mountain views and ocean/cliff views in Taiwan. Enjoy your travels!

Taipei to Hong Kong used to be the busiest international flight route in the world before Taiwan and China started to have direct flights... (still the second now?)
Taipei to Kaohsiung used to be the busiest domestic flight route in the world before THSR was built?

The big warrior statue is 玄天上帝(Xuantian god),The national god of Ming dynasty,he is the god of war、water、north&taoism。350 years ago,Koxinga(Zheng chen gong)&the last Ming emperor&people who dont wanna ruled by Qing dynasty came to Taiwan and fight against Qing dynasty, they bring Xuantian god here,so he is a very popular belief in Taiwan.

    Carol & Chris:
Confucius' Confucianism is like a doctrine or a way of life.
Unlike Buddhism or Taoism, these two religions worship gods.(like the god of christianity)
In Eastern culture, there are many deeds of setting up temples for historical great men.
Such as Japan's Abe no Seimei.
Guan Yu and Zhang Fei in the Romance of the Three Kingdoms.
1883-1909 Liao Tianding (Bali District, New Taipei City) Taiwanese folk legends.
And in the kingdom of "God" such as Buddhism or Taoism, there will be generals and soldiers like in the movie "Thor",guarding the area.
So, since Confucius was not a "god",There are no statues of military generals in Confucius Temple.
P.S This video is almost in Zuoying area. Looking forward to your exploring other areas.

In fact the HSR makes the TP-KH flight obsolete - there were such flights before, but the HSR is much cheaper and has more trains than flights everyday. So naturally the airlines no longer fly this route due to competition.

(sorry, this answer is wrong. The warrior statue is not Guan yu, but Xuan Tian Shangdi (玄天上帝))
Guān Gōng, also known as Guan Yu, is a prominent figure in Taiwanese folk religion. He is worshipped as a god of loyalty, righteousness, and protection. Guan Yu was a famous general during the Three Kingdoms period(280-220 bc.) in ancient China and is revered for his heroic deeds and unwavering loyalty to his sworn brother, Liu Bei.
In Taiwanese culture, Guan Yu is often depicted as a fierce warrior holding a long sword and wearing a green robe. Many temples across Taiwan are dedicated to him, and his image is widely seen in homes, businesses, and public spaces. People offer incense, food, and other offerings to him in hopes of receiving his blessings for protection, success, and prosperity.

@@JumpingPlaces Correct it.The warrior statue is Xuan Tian Shangdi (玄天上帝)
Xuantian Shangdi, is a prominent deity in Taiwanese folk religion. He is considered the highest deity in the pantheon of deities worshipped in Taiwan and is often associated with Taoist beliefs.
In Taiwanese culture, Xuantian Shangdi is often depicted as a fierce warrior riding a black tiger, with a red face and long beard.
Xuantian Shangdi is believed to be a powerful and benevolent deity who presides over the heavens and the earth, and is seen as a protector of the weak and a dispenser of justice. He is also associated with longevity and is believed to be able to bestow immortality upon his followers.
In addition to his role as a deity, Xuantian Shangdi is also revered as a cultural hero and is believed to have played a significant role in the history and development of Taiwanese society. His influence can be seen in many aspects of Taiwanese culture, from literature and popular media to martial arts and traditional festivals.
