My dad had one of those, exactly color scheme everything. He bought it at Montgomery Wards in Detroit back in the day. Tilled the garden every year for years with it!!!
I have a buddy who's Dad has a spring manufacturing business in his garage. garage is ram packed with spring making machines and only has walking space between them. It was a very interesting tour of his garage as he can manufacture any spring to high specs and tolerances, high performance engine valve springs to itsy bitsy ones. Wondered how much you could make on spring then I saw a pallet box that I when I picked up handful I was like, there must be ten million in there. Sits there in the garage churning out mucho de boingo ef yeah.
When I was a kid we had a neighbor who got hurt real bad while using this “Roto-Killer”. I spotted it when he tossed it out and swapped out the engine and put it on my mini-bike frame. Worked out pretty good. Thanks for all of the videos and skits
Great recovery on that tiller. Sometimes you have to reverse engineer the crummy work by the previous owner to fix a problem. This is a nicely running tiller, that took some patience and experience to fix. To rescue this machine from the scrap yard and repair to such a good state must be a satisfying feeling.
Thanks Taryl and company for all the great videos I wait for the new video every week to watch. I'm a huge fan of Taryl Fixes All and the Grass rat garage crew use do a excellent job in what you do.
Best thing on those starter clutch is 3 in one oil !!! WD 40 is good to break things lose but it don't last and actually dries it out. I go to the extra trouble and take theme apart and clean theme. Will work like new for years !! I promise.
Happy Birthday Taryl!! 🎂🎉 Hope you have a great day. I enjoy watching your videos every week. Thanks for all you folks do to help us with our small engines! 🤠
Great job on that tiller. Another one saved from the scrap. That governor was pretty tricky, but I had all faith you would have that motor singing properly. Thanks for the upload 🤘🇺🇸
Not too long ago, I saw a guy scrap a nice Troy Bilt Pony tiller in very good condition. I bought a JD commercial mower with swivel casters for $20 at that same scrap yard. All that was wrong was a dirty carb.
Try using Dirt Bike foam oil...the Tacky stuff...it goes on real oily and sticky..then tacks up But stays on better than motor oil ...it won't drip down to bottom or run off when it's hotter outside ....👍 stays oiled longer
The starter clutch is eminently serviceable and easy to clean. The square starter 'boss' is made of sintered metal so it is designed to retain oil and be naturally friction-free. Just clean the inside with a .45-.50 cal gun barrel cleaning brush, clean the inner star chamber and clean the steel balls with solvent. Reassemble, add a few drops of motor oil to the hole in the end of the square piece and voila, it's functional again.
I bought a similar mtd tiller brand new. it was 84 and 4 hp 11 series. it has different choke which I did burn off when i failed to reply gas cap. handle a bit different. it had an engagement lever similar to snow augers. eventually had some running issues and sat in storage until I gave it to a young lady interested in smallengine stuff. I never followed up with him.
HA!! The multi talented Dactyl clan is at it again!!! What a great Sunday morning treat! Another superb production fellas - thank you. Your biggest fan
Nice simple fun project, and now fixed right. Cute little basic tiller. I like those older smooth running little B&S flatheads. Unfortunately the last generation Briggs flatheads suck, they frequently vibrate and rattle and never really run good with the non-adjustable EPA carbs. Junk!
Lots of funny lines in this episode ! Nice fix on that old machine, Taryl. The only thing I don't care for about it is how the exhaust blows straight back at the operator. Must be nasty if the machine is burning a bit of oil.
I've a brand new never started 1972 techumseh h30 I'd ship to your shop as a thank you for all the great content you put out. Me and my kid love watching. We watch your channel for laughs. And we watch donyboy73 for sleep.
you make learning fun, when I was a kid I wanted to help my brothers work my dad would help them too sometimes on the cars becaue I wanted to learn but they did not have the time or patience to teach me, after all I am a girl and I am not supposed to stuff like this, never could understand why not? but I am enjoying your videos believe it or not. I am learning so much about motors and since I have several mowers in the garage and I am primary user it is nice to understand how it works. what is on it and how the parts work etc. thank you for taking the time and energy to show us all thes neat stuff.
i have a very very similar one, but in red. i guess mine is one of the first one because its from 1957-60 i think as we looked into it in the past. my father bought it used in the 90`s. (we changed the engine just last year, for a exact same one from a cement mixer) the main problem are -if you dont have the dig bar in the back those things are very hard on the wrist. -the carburetor is garbage -the thines keep getting clogged with roots and stuff -when the rope break you must un bent some metal tabs holding the spool in, with time they break off -the starter flat clock spring break all the time and its a pain to grind a new end and put everything back anyway its a nightmare, but rototillers are very expensive and its the only one of its kind that is small, but not too small. we use it every year to till about 50by50ft big plot.
also i forgot to say: there is no crank bearing, not even journals. its straight on the alumilium on the crank ends. the cover wears off and it is where the noise and the oil is coming from. its pissing from the crank. the cylinder is also plated (no sleeve)
@@ItsMrAssholeToYou how?? the hole is too small for a rope to be just pushed thru and the spool is too thin all the way to the bottom of the spool. even with the spool out i need 10mins with little long nose pliers and hooks and try to bring the end of the rope thru the hole.
I had a rotortiller with a lawn mower engine on it, had to replace the bad engine. No one would buy it because it looked old( the frame was dating the machine) As soon as I painted the thing all black, It sold right away. It was an old MTD as well. Same exact color but used a belt drive . I have had other equipment that people shied away from because they saw the color and wouldn't buy it. Had a gold craftsman tiller as well, painted that black as well, same effect.
Maybe the guy who had that was like my grandfather. He would make me tip his tiller over on its side while he filled the crankcase with oil right to the top. No matter how much I told him it wasn't good for it, he wouldn't listen to me. I guess the only advantage was, with all that oil all over it, it didn't rust.
Use "Red Lion" molybdenum dry lube on linkages, and cables. It puts on a graphite-liike coating, which is slippery, but does not attract dirt, dust, etc. Great stuff Taryl, give it a "shot" .......LOL
grouse work Taryl Dactal mate cheers from Australia and i stil have a feeling the parts might be very similar to the 1960s Lawn Boys etc and stay safe too.
Jr. must be a graduate of the mandatory hunter safety course like the two teens I hunted with. They had the graduation patch and I had a good look down their barrels. I have a tiller from '55. I think it's time for rings. She smokes!
Probably was running hot cause of the mouse nest clogging cooling fins plus over revving from the governor spring was making it blow excess oil out the crankcase vent tube
That turned out really nice. The throttle and governor setup was a real mess. The people who had this tiller must have been really revving the crap out of it!
👍 AWESOME 👌 SNOWPEAS should do good in that tilled space 😱💪🤭 THANKS TARYL for the very entertaining 😏 and noteworthy 🤔 info on the governor spring. GOD BLESS (keep an eye on those intruders.) 😣😵 😍😍😍😍😍
Half the effort and twice as quick! One of my favorite parts is when he goes and finds some scrap piece or part that'll work on whatever he's doing at the time. Grass rats, pack rats, it's all the same thing.
I've got somewhat of a challenge for you and Junior. Build a running and usable riding mower with various parts in your boneyard. And it has to be obvious the parts are from different mowers. How 'bout it?
I still can't believe elkskins called those Wisconsin's "boat anchors" over here in Australia I don't come across them often and never had one in my collection of engines to be used in a project. I so wish to have one I'll rebuild it and even do a custom paint job.
Im more of a fan of Honda's myself, their just so reliable, but you sure as he'll got that old Briggs & Scrappem running well, that's for sure. Surprised the fuel pick-up tubes weren't blocked.
I see this one is a 3hp , I have that same engine but I thought mine is a 3.5hp , did they make a 3.5hp one like this one?? mine is missing linkage peices , I'm happy I've found this video it may help me in getting my little engine running ,

Another great vid Taryl. I have a question of perhaps a subject for a future video for you. Suppose you get a Briggs engine that someone has replaced the blower housing on and although it fits it doesn't have the correct Model, Type and Code. How do you determine what parts to order?
If it's an old flathead, the cubic inches are sometimes cast into the cylinder head on one corner. "13" means it's a 5 HP for example. Other than that, you really can't tell exactly what engine you have and that's the sad part. Briggs should have engraved the code into the engine block instead of the blower housing. To know what parts to order you'll just have to get to know your engine really well and perhaps take it apart.
My dad had one of those, exactly color scheme everything. He bought it at Montgomery Wards in Detroit back in the day. Tilled the garden every year for years with it!!!
Those old machines and tools sold by Wards are great
My uncle had one from Monkey Wards in Mt,Clemens it was two tone brown.
1. Love the sketches (and outtakes).
2. Taryl, you're the Turdmeister. Thanks for a great video.

I have been having a really crappy weekend. Your video made me smile and laugh for a little while, as they always do , thanks guys.

Great rescue! When you remarked that the air filter may have caught fire, notice it's right above the muffkin, which is possibly what melted it.
I've explained this to you before Taryl, petroleum & derivatives ain't got nothing to do with dinosaurs. That's a fairy tale 🧚🏼♀

Marc Bolan/T-Rex also did "Jeepster," something else that needs polishing.
