- In "Rebranding Ronnie", Taryl goes over this rare 1950s engine he was gifted back in June when the gang hit Portland, IN for the Vintage Motorbike Show. Our new buddy Doc Neon gave us this one and wanted to see if Taryl could get it going again. What kinda engine is this thing? It's pretty rare and unusual looking with some neat features. Ever heard of it before?
Before and After the repair, Taryl is surprised to find out the engine he's working on was rebranded Tecumish by a local customer. Who could be behind supplying these people with these phony decals? Looks like a pretty bad burn once upon a time?
When I was around 8yo I begged my grandfather to get me a small engine. I’ll never forget the day we went to the scrapyard and found the motor pile and picked out a Pincor motor just like that one only it was off of a generator. It barely has spark and would not run. I pulled and pulled for hours ended up with a gas rash and sore arms. My dad took it to a real repair shop and they got it running. What a great thing my grandfather did for me, I started and ran it for years. Thanks Grandfather!
You had no one that could show you how to fix it your self?
When I was 10 or 11 years old I went with my older sister to visit some old neighbor friends that moved and while she visited the sister I was hanging out with her younger brother who had a mini bike. One of his friends had a small Briggs and Stratton horizontal shaft engine for sale real cheap, like 5 bucks
( about 50 bucks today's money )
I asked my sister if she could get it for me and I would pay her back somehow. She was seriously considering it until her friend heard the name of the kid selling it and talked her out of it. I was so bummed. I had lots of mowers but nothing with horizontal shaft. I was always trying to make vertical shaft engines work on end, but then I had no carburetors that would fit.
Years later I had some nice little carburetors with tank on them and told my sons ' I would have give just about anything when I was 10 to have this carburetor."
When i was 14 or so a neighbor gave me a pincore. He didn't knoww what it came off of, and I never did anything with it except get it running, don't remember what ever happened to it, and never saw another one. Until today- Thanks Darryl for the pincor history.

@@robertmack7116 I know I had some engines, but not many you could really DO something with. When I did get some I was putting them on every kind of contraption a 10 - 11 year old kid with almost no tools could build.
I had a pulley with about a 1/4" hole in center and a long wood screw in the end of a two-foot long two by four with a pivot on the other end and pull it with a rope. That was my belt clutch.
Nothing like go-carts made almost entirely of wood.
I will never get tired of seeing Ronnie get thrown over the fence! 🤣

Make a recording of a room full of people yelling " surprise " like at a birthday party.
Play it for when you open something up you don't know what you're going to get.
I often throw that sound effect in myself when I unbolt something.

that spark was better than the spark seen on my modern machines.
It sure as hell was !!! That spark jumped all around and strong. My new $350 mower was hard to start, about 8 pulls before it fired off - upon investigation, the coil was WEAK !!! Barely had spark. Got a new one (Breaks & Scrapem) from Ebay, and spark was fair - just No quality in today's stuff !!!!!!! 🤮👎💩💩💩💩

From what I've seen points and condenser ignitions actually have a hotter fatter bright blue Spark at low RPMs t h a n electronic ignition
Had a Pincor back in '59! Lasted for my mom til 1980! Loved the reel!!I believe it did have a "Breaks and Scrappem, lol! Welcome to the club with the glasses!!
Pincor was built in Chicago Il. I have a pincor “sno-mover. Most primitive ever. Mine has a breaks & scrapem transplant. Wish I could send you a pic here but not sure how. Thanks for taking us along on the adventure of getting it running again. 😃

A Ronnie Jerkenstein cameo! That difficult customer is probably similar to a few that you get. "Over the fence..." lol I was born in '61. I remember a few reel mowers on our street of 17 houses, one of them powered. Long long time ago.

One could back lap the mower with the engine which was a nice feature and rare. Sometimes I feel like small mowers have suffered a devolution through the years.
yes. used to have 2 John E. Locke mowers. Would apply lapping compound with the blades going in reverse. Very sharp. They would cut one blade of grass 3 times before it hit the ground.

Dang, Taryl !!! I can't believe this. Takes me back 60 years, I was about 10 years old and Dad had one of these reel-type mowers with that exact engine on it !!!!! Wow. I can hear it running now, like it was just yesterday. Thanks for all you do !!!
I was born in '47. Sorry to say I never saw a Pincor. My granddad retired and serviced mower to keep himself busy. He had all sorts of mowers at his shop. It was fun to watch him work. He even built a machine to grind blades of reel mowers. He was also a machinist. I'd like to be 12 years old again. The 50s cars were fabulous.
The Pincor is similar to the REO engine I took off an old reel mower when I was a kid. That thing had a built in 2:1 gear reduced output shaft from the gearbox with a pulley instead of sprocket. It had the same tank, a sight glass filter, brass lines, tons of spark, a really fancy exhaust-and it sounded exactly the same as that engine when it ran... you just made my day. Ol' *Mustie1* worked on several REO mowers many years ago, but yours is very similar to the one I had. I remember it because I mated a pulley and belt onto an old 5 speed lawn mower transmission which acted as a clutch and trans for my first homebuilt go cart. Wheelbarrow wheels, all wooden frame, homemade wire driven steering, and that goofy gear reduced engine/trans combo allowed for a creaky, loud, and slightly dangerous 15mph in 5th gear 😆
Good times, my dad was the best for allowing my contraptioneering as a small child.

Yesterday I picked up an REO reel mower. Model 552 type A . I don't know anything about it other than it's really cool and I couldn't pass. It appears to be a complete. Even the starter rope and handle came with. This thing has wooden rollers! I'm researching but any knowledge you could share would be a huge help. Taryl is a Hoosier by the way.
@@whiskeybuilder6335 If you have to make gaskets for it I recommend *sixtyfiveford* 's video on diy gaskets, If you have any corroded stuck parts I recommend making and applying a 50/50 mix of ATF and acetone.. even unstuck a piston using that mix before. Drill start would be ideal for these engines if you have the actual pull rope with handle. To clean the mower and engine I would use a spray bottle of a product called Krud Kutter, follow up by scrubbing and spraying off. On a side note: I made a large parts washer from a 5 gallon bucket bungeed to a rafter with a palm sander strapped to the bottom with ratchet straps. I used an appliance motor controller set on low speed to provide some control over the vibration, filled it with krud kutter sold at box stores and it works great... or you could use any other parts washing solution.

Carb looks like the ones that they put on early Coleman mobile home furnaces.
They were notorious for leaking and causing fires.
In the '60s I was working at a hardware store, where we sold Pioneer/Pincore rotary mowers. By the time I came along, they had switched to using Briggs and Stratton, but customers were still bringing old Pincores in for service, and we still had parts.
Id love to see what was sold in hardware stores that you cant find in lets say an ace hardware or home depot these days

Davies hardware in Poughkeepsie NY since the late 1800s and Williams lumber (they've got 4-5 stores but the original location still has the good stuff)

The problem of the 50's was they made everything to last too long. So a person would buy one and never buy a 2nd one.

The reverse spinning of the reel is called Backlapping!
@6:20 Man that is a nice cover to keep a man from getting sparked and the kill switch on top was such a good idea, you NEVER see that anymore.
I never saw a Pincor engine but when I was growing up we had a bunch of old cast iron gas engines around including one off of a Maytag washing machine. My brother and I got all of them running with the hopes of making a gocart but we never made it. We both got old junkyard motorcycles and got them running instead and had a blast running around the country side.
That’s a high quality old engine. Built to LAST. Doesn’t even smoke or knock either. I knew ol’ Taryl would get it fired up!

I've never seen one of these. But I used to mess around with old mower engines in my teens, back in the early '70s,
I would check out old small-engine repair manuals from my local library. My first guess was ....,,,, Pincor!

Taryl needs some videos with REO motors. Like the reel mower type that I believe had a ' T ' head design.
Kind of like a hemi only in a flat head.
First motor I ever touched was my dad's used REO three- wheeled rotary mower.
A whole whopping 1 1/2 hp. and no governor. Just speed the idle screw up and cut slow. Rope wind start.
From an old golf course mechanic. The reverse is for putting grinding compound on the reel and bed knife and turning backwards .back laps and sharpens the unit without grinding. New moweres are are all hydraulic and all you have to do is turn a valve and reverse flow. Love the old machines.
That engine would be perfect for a small boat build.
This mower would be perfect for a powered dump wagon that moved under it's own power instead of pushing it. A wagon with reverse would be great.
I really need to explain to my Dad why I end up watching this at 2am - I'm not high. It's really cool.

I'm 73 years old. My dad built a 57 Buick convertible Buick go cart, mostly wood! It had that same engine on it. I put a lot of miles on it. Later we made a medal one with a 5hp brand new Briggs engine. Those were the days and I'm sure was responsible for my mechanic skills and a decent livelihood. My dad 2asnt very mechanical but was a great woodworker.

Great video. My introduction to the real world of work as a kid was mowing lawns. I used a neighbors mower to mow his lawn. The motor had a rubber ball on the pull cord, so maybe it was a Pincor, because it was on a big (to me) reel mower, and it tended to pull me along. That's the only time I can remember mowing a lawn with a rubber ball pull cord on the mower. TD videos a re e always educational and fun even if I will never own most of the equipment he repairs. Thanks

A lot of comments want you to put this engine on a go-cart. Please make it an I shaped go-cart, made out of three 2x4s, with some wheels and a rope for steering. Like the cover of that old Bill Cosby "Wonderfulness" album.

"Got no parts to fix it." For an engine that old - you can make your own parts or try to fenagle some parts for it via 3d printing or whatever. It can be done. Worst comes to worse you can ebay for them or go hunting - but the best... well dang it you know what to do Taryl this ain't your first "no parts" rodeo. An engine that old is worth fixing imho! I LOVE IT when you fix really old engines where parts are a rarity! LOVE IT!!! I gotta say it's videos like these that really do showcase your expertise the most, Taryl. Keep up the amazing videos!!!

Backlapping the reel with a lapping compound is what the reverse was for. Old timer that worked on the golf course near home here used reel mowers. The course was beautifully groomed.
This engine sure would be nice on a hot rod cart like a 39 ford roadster. May not be fast but definitely fits the old school look.

At a few swap meets in Los Angeles, there's a few tool vendors who have them dental picks...thousands of them. I dug through the pile and found some that were the real deal, actual dentist instruments,. Like 50cents or a dollar each!. Yeah SCORE! For $20 i gota lifetime supply. That was 22 years ago, i still have 6 left (and that's after some clowns stole a bunch).
I have one and it is a handy tool to have.

I remember these from working in a lawnmower shop as a kid in the 70s. They were few, and far between, even back then.

Nice new bench cover
We routinely backlapped the reels on all the mowers at the golf courses I've worked at. Lapping compound brushed on to the reels, and rinsed off thoroughly before being returned to service.
