Summary
1. Avoid getting distracted by your own thoughts. Focus on the speaker and topic instead.
2. Try not to interrupt the other person. Let them finish and then respond.
3. Use door openers. These are phrases that show your are interested and keep the other person talking.
4. Show that you are listening with body language.
5. If appropriate take notes during important conversations.
6. Paraphrase what other have said to make sure you are on the same page.

As a social awkwardness psychologist I can't stress enough how important Active Listening is, a lot of my clients come to me and want advice on WHAT to say, that is the wrong approach. Granted, knowing what to say is also important but 80% of your social skills can be improved if you can master Active Listening.

Thanks yeah I also have the same problem, but my biggest problem is that I keep drifting off into my own thoughts so I'll try to incorporate Active Listening.

I don't understand why you need to "show you are listening with body language". What is the goal, to actually listen? Or to make the other person think you are listening when you're really not? If you're actually listening, your body language will naturally show it
