    I still don't understand why corporations buy things they don't want.
    EDIT: As explained in the video, it was because Goldner saw the toy sales of the 2017 movie and decided for some reason to buy the franchise, without really thinking about what that entailed.
    I swear, megacorp CEOs really are just disconnected from reality.

    It’s unbelievable how mismanaged PR was and initially, we thought it’d be a step up from the Disney Era.
    Guess for once in their post-Renaissance life, Disney handled an IP they didn’t create better than the other owner. Talk about a rare sentence when it comes to Disney in the last twenty years. They did alright with PR better than Hasbro did and there’s plenty of reasons to criticise the way Disney managed the brand.

      Let's not forget the brief period when Saban got the rights back. Megaforce was a massive waste of everyone's time and effort, especially for an anniversary series.
      And what's sad is that, even if they didn't want it (or eOne, for that matter, but that's beyond this video), Hasbro COULD have salvaged it. We could have gotten articulated Megazords that didn't suck (instead we got ones that did), and Lightning collection could have been a great substitute for those who couldn't find/afford the Figurarts of various teams, and fill in the gaps where Bandai failed, which again, did not happen. But they didn't.
      And it's not like they really could if they wanted to either at this stage. Given how badly they treat every other line they own -- Star Wars is constantly being given lazy releases and awful Haslabs, ML has copious mold reuse, MLP had a reboot of mixed to negative response, Indiana Jones and G.I. Joe are frequently given the shaft and Transformers has QC issues out the wazoo coupled with fans getting more and more pissed off about Legacy's treatment of certain characters (and that's before them frequently overlooking Play-Doh, Mr. Potato Head, PJ Masks, Peppa Pig, the board games, Furby; or Jem not getting a new line of toys despite getting a comic in recent years) -- It's probably for the best they just farm toy manufacture to Playmates going forward (even though outside of TMNT, Playmates themselves are getting worse).

      One of the biggest benefits of PR being owned by Disney is that, after the first few years, they didn't really care what the Staff did with it, as long as it stayed within the proposed budget. I say this because after seeing what's happened with Saban Round 2 and Hasbro (or Netflix, more accurately), corporate meddling always seems to be the biggest issue PR has to face.

    The QC issues could probably be chalked up to moving production to Malaysia. True, you don't see a Classified Duke with Roadblock's legs, but there was one wave--the Lt. Falcon/Cover Girl one--that everyone noticed a sharp decline in quality. S.H. Figuarts too; Bandai had to reissue the "Boy from the Future" Trunks because the original run (produced in Malaysia) would fall apart in your hands.
    And I honestly think one of the biggest problems Power Rangers as a whole has is the specter of Mighty Morphin. Yes, the die-hards want Dino Thunder, Ninja Storm, and Time Force, but the larger percentage of the public only acknowledges the OG team. That's all that sells, so that's all Hasbro cared about (their "last hurrah" of LC Remastered being--gasp!--ANOTHER set of MMPR figures was not a coincidence).
    And yeah, that same "only the first ones matter" mindset is why G1 is king in Transformers land. AND G.I. Joe.

    I think the idea of people internally sabotaging Power Rangers is just insane. People are risking their jobs to... spite a company they work for? I don't see ground level workers like those in factories caring one way or another, and people in charge? Maybe they'll try less, but actively sabotaging the brand? The evidence is very circumstantial at best.
    All that said... yeah, the idea that Hasbro didn't want Power Rangers checks out in terms of how they've handled the brand as a whole. They've clearly not known what to do with it, and the attempt at a more mature reboot akin to the 2017 movie makes sense given they likely didn't want to *just* appeal to kids anymore. Hasbro struggles a lot with making their stuff more wide-appealing, and Power Rangers is basically that on hard mode. I'm on board for something new, because, I agree, Power Rangers has been doing the same thing for decades and as a result, everything's just disposable. I want the brand to succeed, but I don't know if it will ever do anything but tread water ever again.

      Takara has nothing to do with Super Sentai. Super Sentai is a Toei IP. Bandai has a licensing agreement from Toei to do the Sentai/Kamen Rider toyline.
      Seems like it would make more sense to team up with Shout! Factory (who has been licensing many of the Sentai and Kamen Rider shows in the West) and go in a partnership with them. Get permission from Toei/Bandai to do Rider/Sentai toylines in the west. Shout! releases Rider/Sentai shows and then has then air on Discovery Family (a Hasbro/Discovery joint venture).

    One thing I feel that isn't often mentioned when it comes to some of the more recent Power Rangers series is that Super Sentai has also had some problems and a lot of the shows they've been pumping out would probably not work for Power Rangers series.
    TouQger - Trains are a hell of a lot more popular in Japan than in the west. Trying to make a train themed ranger team likely wouldn't work.
    Kyuranger - Had a far too bloated cast of rangers, hence why Hasbro pretty much only used the zord footage from it.
    Lupinranger Vs. Patoranger - Hasbro has stated their reasons why already.
    Kiramager - This might actually work, though the toys would likely have a lot of issues due to translucent plastic.
    Zenkaiger - They'd basically have to redo every shot of the gears due to the numbers, not to mention all the sentai only teams and the megazords emerging from what look like the old toy boxes.
    Donbrothers - The heavy use of CGI for two characters along with theming it around the legend of Momotaro would likely make an adaptation a major issue.
    King-Ohger - Like Kiramager, might have a chance, but the costumes and the insect theming might be a bit iffy.
    Boonboomger - IMO, this season has the worst suits in the series and I'm kinda iffy on the zord designs.

      This is something I've mentioned a few times in past Power Ranger videos, it's why Bandai America invested in the development of Kyuranger, because so many Sentais used themes and styles that wouldn't work for in the US, so they wanted to direct things to make sure that didn't happen. Then they lose the license before they got to adapt Kyuranger.

Honestly I more wish people who owned pr would just treat it in a way that had sentai as a base. Make a good story, and the merch will sell itself; every bandai property sees this (See: Gundam Seed Freedom just for one example THIS YEAR), but that's never quite how Hasbro's handled that where the toy lines sales and the TV story quality tend to be dis-staffed from one-another to varying degrees.
    I keep disagreeing when TJ says the brand was on life support from Wild force, as that's partially true and partially not since it was intended to be cancelled there and yet kept going because merch sales and ratings were 'good enough' to not see cancellation under Disney in any immediate sense. the inflection point I more consider Overdrive/Jungle fury as that's where Disney stopped letting the IP just run its course and intended it to be concluded; whereas before it was at the very least self-sustaining. But reduced budgeting certainly doomed Overdrive as they didn't have the funds to properly adapt Boukenger's thematic adventure arc, and with Bandai America starting to make PR-original molds for everything instead of just importing the japanese versions (at an increase to cost at that due to the R&D they now had to do themselves), they toy sales were never going to improve again as they were just inferior to what could be imported. I don't consider Overdrive the series that damned the franchise as others do, but it is certainly where everything started to go wrong, with Jungle Fury from my view being the real one to drive the nail in the coffin with how genuinely bad It did when it could've been the one to help it recover from a stumble. Which RPM itself did, only too little too late as attention had truly fallen off by that point so many people missed out on it; and the saban revival just leading the franchise to double down on its errors year over year with no intelligent attempts to correct the mistakes.
    Which is where we get to What was NOT discussed here; something I don't think Hasbro or even bandai america after Saban brought the show back ever really considered; that due to the 2010 production hiatus a LOT of people who previously cared about Power Rangers found out and began watching Super sentai if they hadn't before to fill that vacated niche; thus from that point onward Power Rangers production was ALSO in competition with the Japanese-originating product PR was based on in ways it HAD NOT BEEN Before...or at least to the same degree. Every year we ended up getting inferior versions of the toys that japan had, so that same collectors market that hasbro would usually bank on for sales whales never would materialize (and NOT helped at all by the MMPR nostalgia pandering Saban/bandai america and Hasbro never escaped); buyers would go and grab the japanese toys, which by that point would usually be on discount to costs with shipping acting equivalent in expense to the 'new US-original' version that would end up inferior. The ONE time Bandai america then tried to bring over the japanese product again (i.e. making available the DX Shinken-oh for a short time) the attempt floundered because their release was marked up for the trouble as a limited item...when we could still import the japanese version at clearance prices; so of course that wasn't going to work.
    And that likewise not helped that we finally got the sentai set imports. Shout Factory's quality control may be bad and only gotten worse to the point the most recent Abaranger and Dekaranger sets translation is complete garbage worse than any previous fansub for those series; but with PR dead this year and those imported series now on Tubi there's been people discovering those now for the first time and drawing those active compare contrasts to the more recent content, and thus finding such modern productions even more wanting as one sees the lack in quality on the PR side wasn't necessarily found in the budget, but in the writing. If the PR staff wanted to, they could have done more straight, less expensive direct adaptations; they just needed to do right by the source material in doing so...and Modern PR never seemed to want to ever do that. Every time they were lobbed a softball like that, they struck out.
    The sole exception to that until VERY Recently was the lightning collection, as those kinds of legacy figures were NOT something that Bandai japan was doing, and even Japanese fans of Sentai were importing the figures TO Japan for their favorite teams. Hasbro had several opportunities to bank on that correctly...and Hasbro Squandered that due to the spiteful QC conduct. But the second Bandai's shokugan division started producing the Super shodo sentai figures at 4", and boxed the sets as full TEAMS, not individually and with loads of accessories? Well even with the cost of those, The writing was on the wall. So couple that with just truly plain awful writing that would not make it so what merch was made for the current-run series would actually SELL, with the people who cared repeatedly showcasing where the franchise was going wrong through proxy of the sentai series which either didn't make the same mistakes or screwed up in wholly different but preventable ways which were not learned from...well it was clear that there was no adult in the room of the production staffs directing attention as what they were adapting was treated as a joke. The same year the disasters of Cosmic Fury and 'Once and always' happened, we also had King-ohger available as a starkest contrast of what the PR Staff kept CLAIMING they wanted to do with the franchise only to repeatedly screw it up...and toei's staff were actually putting into practice themselves. And to be fair, there haven't been many GOOD Super Sentai series the last decade...but even when they adapted a good one they'd still turn it into a terrible story while they were acting as if they made the superior version. That's pride and arrogance showcasing they didn't know where the franchise's strengths were, and not make something that TJ called wrote and formulaic engaging to fans new and old. I didn't hate what the series became because of a perpetuation of the formula, I stopped watching because I kept hating the characters put INTO the formula, the repeated spitting on the Graves (in the case of the whole zedd clone debacle of Dino/Cosmic fury, that being quite literal as the sin that will NEVER be forgiven) of what had come before, and the refusal to stop resetting the way they handled it back to how it was in 1993 when the franchise from 1994 to 2009 DID evolve beyond that first season in how it handled its story and characters...that we just didn't see anymore in the 2011 revival where disrespect to those same matters was far more common.

    What I don't understand is how Power Rangers fan struggles to put two and two together, that the reason Hasbro is Struggling with Power Rangers is because the Super Sentai IP is OWNED by Bandai. Buying Power Rangers only grants them the right to localize and distribute the SUPER SENTAI SHOW, not any of the molds of the toys, atleast not without buying it for a Hefty price. What further put this in conflict is that Hasbro is partnered with Takara Tomy, Bandai's biggest Rival Company in Japan. Meaning, unlike with the Transformers, wich is honestly a subsidiary of Diaclone, Hasbro would have conflict asking Takara to design Power Rangers toys for them less Takara breach some Copy Rights of Bandai, atleast, not for cheap. Meaning Hasbro has to, either design the toys on their own, or pay Bandai a premium just to print a mold of the toys. Making the production of any of the Power Ranger toys MORE EXPENSIVE than it needs.

    • @TJOmega
      @TJOmega  2 месяца назад +2

      Bandai of America actually found out a long time ago it was cheaper to make their own versions of the toys rather than license the Bandai of Japan molds, they had been doing so since Operation Overdrive, so cost of redeveloping the toys was never an issue.

    • @bryanmerel
      @bryanmerel 2 месяца назад +1

      @TJOmega it will be an issue if you don't have the same "Bandai Engineers". Also, that doesn't make any financial sense. Why would you redesign your own company's product from the ground up if the moulds are already there? Especially for the Zords, all they had to do was redesign stickers and Electronics in English, change the packaging from Japanese Super Sentai to Americanized PR, and boom, profit.

    • @TJOmega
      @TJOmega  2 месяца назад +1

      @@bryanmerel Not boom, profit. The Japanese versions of the toys are usually more complex in engineering and sometimes larger than what was Bandai of America released in the US once they adopted this strategy, larger parts means more material, more involved engineering means more cost to assemble. You're also not accounting for licensing the molds, which is avoided by remaking the toys. The example is from Samurai, the last time the Japanese toy was brought over the US. That was done as an exclusive to Toys R Us because it cost $60 to sell, compared to the US version of the toy that only cost $30. At the end of the day, it's a franchise that needs kids to be able to afford the popular toys, which doesn't happen if they're asking $60 for the Japanese version of the mold.

    • @bryanmerel
      @bryanmerel 2 месяца назад

      @TJOmega the factor that the transaction of it being Bandai to Bandai is still there. It is also steps less to compress and simplify an already existing toymold wich i asume all the things Bandai of America has to do. Unlike with Hasbro who HAVE TO BUY the designs from Bandai of Japan before they can even do any tweaks, worst if they don't want to buy the toy assets that means they'll have to design the Zords from the ground up, wich Takara would have some complications assisting them with considering Bandai and Takara are rival branda in Japan.

    Power rangers is having a hard time because the world that made PR successful in the beginning does not exist anymore. Children's television pretty much only exists on 3 cable channels and streaming services. The afterschool and Saturday morning programming blocks that helped so many of us discover shows we woukdnt have normally watched are GONE replaced with informercials and Judge Judy Reruns.
    And even if a kid has cable, cartoon network and nickelodeon frequently bury anything that isnt SpongeBob or Teen Titans Go in the 5 am sunday morning death slot.

    So, neither the largest American media company * Disney * or the largest American toy company * Hasbro * could make PR work now.

      The Disney era worked quite well, they just decided they didn't want it, and Hasbro stopped caring about PR before Cosmic Fury even came out, Hasbro's PR run was doomed the second the CEO changed.

      @wolfman210 2 месяца назад

      @@LiMe251 Yeah, It worked so well Disney decided it would be better to just outright buy both Marvel and Star Wars then continue investing in it.
      And WHY do you think they gave up on Cosmic Fury? Because as Cocks has said the franchise wasn't performing up to par given Hasbro's investment in it.
      Like I said before, this fandom is deluded and thinks that if companies just continue sinking money into this property that it will magically become profitable and successful despite it burning four companies now that tried it.

Looking at the news now, it made me wish I could've done better (don't know how, but yeah), and maybe gotten into their Power Rangers division. But then again, after getting to the part about one guy getting laid off for demanding they make sure they got the right paint...I guess I would've been let go like that person. So yeah, Power Rangers had always been special to me, it's a shame to see them being this unwanted all this time.

    Kind of sad to see it go, but it really has been a long time coming and it has already shifted many hands since the Saban days. Although for both Power Rangers and Super Sentai that its market has reached its limit everywhere and likely needs to go on a long hiatus. Probably what would be best is for there to be nothing new at all for at least 5-10 years and start over under a different company that can bring it back from the ground up.

  • @yep_itsmeagain
    @yep_itsmeagain 2 месяца назад +1

    I disagree that the reason the 2017 movie toys sold well was because they were different. They sold well because say it with me........ MARKETING. The 2017 movie was promoted to hell and back. You literally said it in the beginning of the video. The live action series is a commercial for the toys. If there's no toys what exactly is the show promoting!?!? If there's no marketing for the live action what exactly are kids going to want to bug their parents to buy?!?!? You even brought up how hard it would be to find specific megazords but others was abundant. If I'm some 8 year old and I'm looking for the cheetah Zord and can't find it in person I'm going to be one sad kid and may even lose interest in the show. Hasbro did everything so backwards. Why would you make the 4 auxillary zords abundant and then create a scarcity of the main body megazord and then wonder why nothing is selling?!?!? Power Rangers main issue since Disney bought was has been MARKETING. We know this because when Was Saban got PR back in 2011 Samurai did really well. Why?!? Because Saban did a phenomenal job marketing the show, teaming up with Boom studios, making their presence known at Comic Con, etc. We was getting Power Ranger reveals at one of the largest nerd conventions in the world for Samurai and Megaforce....... Surprisingly both sold well for Saban.
    I said this under another video, as a long time Power Ranger/Super Sentai fan. The problem that's always been an issue for this brand is the mishandling of the series. It's reason why the show has been hanging on by a thread since wild force. Saban original run had the formula down to a T. Disney forgot that Power Rangers tv show is a commercial for the toys so they neglected the toy side and we saw this with how bad the toys was after SPM and Saban fully left the brand. Bandai America just didn't care and we saw some of the worst megazords/figures in the entire series (until we got that cosmic fury brick megazord) overdrive megazords was so bad compared to it's Sentai counterpart that I remember back on forums how people was asking for a refund and going to get the Boukenger Megazord. I specifically remember the red dump truck being awful. Disney then wondered "why can't we turn a profit" BECAUSE Y'ALL FORGOT ABOUT THE TOYS.
    Then Saban got the series back and Power Rangers Samurai was a smash hit for them. Remember we got the Red Ranger float back in the Macy's Thanksgiving day parade something that didn't happen in 10 years. They was riding a high and then sold the tv rights to Nickelodeon and then Nickelodeon proceeded to kill all momentum the series gained by having some of the worst TV air dates ever. But again this is the network that airs SpongeBob 24/7 a day.
    Then Saban/Nickelodeon sold the entire brand to Hasbro and Hasbro proceeded to kill the brand slowly. They did the exact opposite of Disney. They forgot that the TV show is a commercial for the toys. So while they was creating all these lightning figures and ZAP projects they was neglecting the show. Then Goldner passed away and they really started to show their ass by not even selling toys of the show they had produced. Like wtf. How would kids know what's the new toy if what they see isn't in the show.
    What makes it worst Hasbro had Netflix remove all the old Power Rangers from the streaming service so what kid is going to know who the heck is the Blue wild force ranger when the current show blue ranger animal motif is a gorilla???? How can you make a show like Beast Morphers and even make the second season hyping up the Beast X King Megazord and then DON'T RELEASE THE HYPED MEGAZORD TOY. Like come on this is marketing 101, this is stuff you learn if you take a marketing class in high school. You make a product, you promote the product, you sell the product. They was upset Cosmic Fury didn't perform well from what I heard.......... They didn't even produce action figures for this show. They made a freaking brick megazord and didn't do anything else. What do you expect.
    TL;DR this issue isn't as complex as most people make it. The mistakes Hasbro made are as clear as day and idk why people keep trying to use the excuse that PR has been on life support or that the brand has always performed bad when neither Disney nor Hasbro even supported the brand right. They always did the opposite of what they should be doing

      This whole franchise has been coasting on its cheapness to produce since 95.
      After MMPR season 2 the franchise has steadily declined. Ditching the ZyuRanger suits in Zeo and the cast change midway through Turbo were both desperate attempts by Saban to keep it going in the 90s. Then In Space and Lost Galaxy had strong ratings thanks to the late 90s sci-fi boom Star Wars' revival caused so it barely avoided the reaper's axe.
      The franchise is a trojan horse.

    It's actually kind of sad seeing TJ's video of him being excited for what Hasbro could not long after them buying Power Rangers as a whole, only to come to now with how the franchise is being handled now.
    And it's actually sad, they actually seemed to care back then too, with them going back and adapting Go-Busters to make Beast Morphers whilst starting the Lightning Collection which had some smarts to avoid doing teams as Waves and have them be an assortment of Rangers throughout the years since that way wouldn't sell, even with great pushes to show Power Rangers is more than the dinosaurs then ninjas, seven Ranger colours show they remember it for.
    How you'd come back after halting the brand and having your frustrations with it become known, I have no idea other than apologising for underestimating how much you've jerked the fans around because you were only half-hearting it for most of the time, which is never going to happen, just them announcing some new show, movie, or continuation of toys at best, if at all.
