    We have two of these in the front of our house - East facing - so they only get morning sun. They are doing great - 7 years old now and tall. We also live in high desert, clay soil conditions. Thought I'd share something great about this tree. The main top branch (that sticks straight up) broke off during a bad windstorm - all the way down to the top tier of the first weeping branches. I was devastated - as I thought that it wouldn't grow anymore. The following summer one of those new weeping branches from the summer before lifted itself up from its downward position and became the new leader - now 3 years later you'd never know it wasn't the original one. Its a beautiful tree - ours is about 12 feet now and planted near our foundation - perfect place for it. :D

    Idea for a few videos! In the same vein as your Q&A videos, maybe you could do Pick My Plant videos where subscribers send you a photo and description of a trouble spot in their landscape, and you pick the perfect plant for the spot. You do such an amazing job with that in your own landscape! People would love to hear your ideas for their own spaces!

    These will be 12-15ft at 10 years old. However they will get much bigger than that and reach about 40 ft tall at maturity.

    You should be very grateful to your parents for introducing you to plants and teaching you to love them. I feel like you been around plants all your life. What a blessing! I grew up in a beatiful place as well, full of mountains, Rivers, colorful birds, where flowers grow beatiful and you can hear the rain when its coming in the mountain. I happened to end up in a hot place! Texas. My plants don't last long 😔 but I don't give up! Thank you for your amazing videos 😍

    I love the look of this weeping white spruce when it is more mature, I agree with Aaron, as a baby it didn't really make me jump for joy, but when it gets bigger it is so cool looking, thank you for sharing this video, I might never have considered getting one of these. You are so lucky to have parents that own a garden center, what fun this is for you to see all of the new plants and flowers and to be able to incorporate them in your beautiful landscape. This is so fun to see!

    Hi Laura, can you please perhaps do a video about how to improve clay soil with gypsum? I have a large yard full of clay.

    • @gardenanswer
      @gardenanswer  6 лет назад +4

      I've been there (and still deal with it)! We apply pelletized gypsum 3-4 times per year on the lawn, and I add it to flower beds 1-2 times per year (or as often as I can get to it). It takes a build up of it in the soil to start working, so persistence is key. Definitely worth the effort and money, though. In my old garden, I didn't see results for a couple years, but just kept at it, and in time I had beautiful soil! :)

    I planted one in our yard about fifteen years ago. You may find that it gets bigger than the grower suggests. Perhaps you are planning to move your walkway if not the limbs will cover it. They are a marvelous tree but planting that close to your house could be an issue in the future.

    • @gardenanswer
      @gardenanswer  6 лет назад +2

      That is always a huge consideration. We've been planting this variety of spruce for years and I've never seen it grow bigger than what the tag states (15' h x 4' w). Our growing environment usually limits the growth on most everything. I suppose it could be different given ideal growing conditions, but definitely something to note and keep my eye on! :)

      It's definitely something to think about. We've planted this tree in our area in spaces like this for years and haven't had a problem, but that could be because our growing environment is really tough on plants and they rarely grow to what the tag states as mature size (which in this case if 15'h x 4' w). I should have talked more about that in the video, there were several questions about it! ;)

    A note to my fellow viewers: Be prepared to do repairs to your foundation/sidewalk, if you plant a tree that close to your home. Additionally, in many parts of the US, planting a tree in that location will cause issues should you decide to sell your property later. Many areas have specific guidelines on how close they can be to structures and/or public roads, so do your homework, talk with an arborist, and set some money aside for tree-related repairs. Happy planting!

    That spruce is very striking when mature, would the roots cause a possible problem to the house in the future?
    Happy gardening to my viewers and subscribers, Cheers Adam

    I love this beautiful tree. I will look for one and hopefully find a not too expensive one. I am pretty shocked lately how many even smaller conifers are $200 and higher. They are certainly an investment. Do you know how this one does around septic systems?

      White spruces, in general, are shallow rooted plants. The mature height of the tree is the minimum distance it should be kept from your septic system, though more aggressive water seekers and fast growers should be a minimum of 100 feet away.

    Hey. Can we get an update on this spruce?

    Is it okay that the bottom branches are touching the soil? We just planted these trees and the bottom branches that are touching the soil are turning brown.
