If you let the central leader on a MONTGOMERY BLUE SPRUCE grow it will become a charismas tree.
I have 2 that are around 20 years old and are about 7-8 feet tall.
Most people trim the leader so it stays ball shaped.
It would be an ideal choice for that spot.

Great video! Your garden is gorgeous in the winter even in MA where I also garden. I recently planted Dwarf Hinoki "Nana", Bruns Weeping Serbian Spruce, Compact Hinoki Cypress and a Weeping Blue Colorado Spruce in my front garden border and I love every one of them especially now in the middle of winter. You have a few I've never seen and will look for this spring in the garden center. Thanks for sharing your garden :)

@@HookedandRooted Same here. We bought a summer home and the yard was neglected for 7 to 10 years. So we plowed everything out and started from scratch. Last year was a biggie, over 220 trees, shrubs and plant my husband and I planted each and every one. This year we are tackling a raised vegetable garden. Its a labor of love. Enjoy your weekend:)

Your winter garden is gorgeous!!! I love your content & your garden soo much! I love that you also have the same problem as me, "dear deers" It was so hard to figure out which ones are deer resistant. I bought 2 Trautman Junipers last year, but sadly deer ate them last month. So this VDO help me select some of them and learn your strategy for how you protect your evergreen from the deers. Thank you very much!
Thank you so much for your kind words. Oh yes, the deer, grrrr. An ongoing issue in my garden. They are my biggest pest that I deal with. There's a few bunnies, and groundhogs that like to take residence under my neighbors shed, but honestly the deer are the worst thus far. I have good luck with spraying with Invisible fence deer and rabbit, but I have to be conistent. The minute I miss a spraying, they know it and strike! I noticed just this week that they nibbled on my grey owl juniper tips, but must not have liked them because lukily they only tried a few branches. I'm sorry they ate your Junipers. I hope they bounce back and send new growth out this Spring. It just means you'll need to protect them in order to give them time to recover. Love this video! I love the spruces and will be planting some this spring. All your choices look beautiful together. I want them all! I just have to be careful not to get so many that I have to water deeply when it inevitably turns dry. I could literally just live in my garden and I can’t wait for spring. By the way, my yarrow seeds have germinated in my winter sowing jugs. I hope they aren’t too early. I was so excited when I saw them. Thanks for the tour.😊😊

I'm watching this in winter and am happy to see the winter color of your evergreens. I am a new gardner and just planted some evergreens this past fall and it's reaffirming to see that the winter color changes I have seen to my trees and shrubs is normal, not a sign of poor health.

Hi Jackie, Its always great to be inspired. Glad I could do that for you. My shed was purchased from Reeds Ferry Garden Sheds in NH. We added a custom door, the decorative detail above the door, and the window boxes to give it a bit more character. I love it also
Just loved all the variety of evergreens you have. I will be going to the nursery soon and see about getting some evergreen Holly and Thuga trees now that the power company took down the huge pines on the property behind me. Love the borrowed view ones you have, but they would be too tall unfortunately.

Those conifers are gorgeous. The different sizes, textures, and colors add so much interest to your garden. I would be really interested to know how your one fares that you had to cage to keep the deer off of it. I have lots of deer pressure also. I'm concerned that the deer problem may get worse because we have SO much building going on within 2 miles of our house. I really enjoy your videos; all the areas of your garden are lovely.
Hi Jennifer, Thank you so much. I love the layered look and after nearly 10 years of gardening in my landcape, I'm finally starting to get some of that. Oh I'll have to report back on the dang deer! They stress me out. I agree, the more development the worst it gets. We are technically overtaking their land, which i do often feel bad about. But as a gardener I just wish they would stick to eating their native woods, and not our garden that they assume is a colorful and fragrant gourmet buffet we've put out for them.

We had a Colorado Blue Spruce when we lived in Mass. and it was ginormous, maybe 60 feet tall and beautiful. We sold the house and the new owners had it taken down, which almost made me cry. Neighbors were unhappy also. Now we're in Georgia which is a pine tree state and everything grows like it's on steroids!
Hi Mary, It really is so sad to take down beautiful mature trees. We are at a loss over ours because I do not want to take it down, but it is too close to our home and foundation. It was a mistake I made as a new gardener. Live and learn. Wow pine tree state, so interesting how things grow differently in different climates.
@@HookedandRooted Right, we lived in Holden, Mass where it was almost impossible to grow anything, moved to Cape Cod where it was a totally different climate and easy to grow most things, moved to Ga where things grow so fast I have to be careful what I plant because it will take over the whole yard in no time. 🙂

@@HookedandRooted I laugh because I feed the birds all winter…… and the deer love bird food too as do the squirrels………. But they leave my plants alone so they can have the bird food and there is plenty for everyone 😂. I bought the metal mesh trash cans at dollar tree and put them over my Heuchera a with a rock on the top and for $1.25 I’m saving those beautiful leaves that the bunnies are so attracted to. I decided to buy that gorgeous cypress boulevard Pom Pom which will replace a hydrangea tree because it will look cleaner and the hydrangea will be in a spot with more sun. Wisconsin is tricky because until Memorial Day it is just not a good idea to plant anything and spring fever is real!!!! 😂
Great tour. I live in New Hampshire and we have deer everywhere. Because of the deer I have gotten rid of hydrangeas, yews, rose of Sharon just to name a few. I know there are sprays but I don’t want to have something else to do. After watching your video I will plant cypress deer don’t seem to bother it. Thank you!

Love your evergreens. Evergreens are great for birds too provides protection from predators especially during winter. I planted 2 golden mops cypress bushes two years ago, they were looking just beautiful but the deer decided to have a go at them this winter, all the beautiful tips gone. 😢 Hoping they will fill out again. They nibbled the Alberta spruces too but not as damaged as the others. You never know what deer will do.
Hi Terri, Urgh that's so frustrating that the deer nibbled on your gold mops. You really don't know what they'll favor. Things marked deer resistant aren't always because they'll try anything if hungry enough. I find that those shrubs respond well to pruning so if you can keep them away from them somehow, by spraying etc. they should rebound nicely for you this Spring/Summer. Birds love to nest in our trees! its great :)
Hi Steph. Been a subscriber since this summer and I really enjoy all your videos. I appreciate the useful info and ideas to save money in the garden - gardening can get very expensive! I especially love your box store inventory videos as they tell me when I need to run to the store for plants and gardening supplies on my list for the season. Most of all, I’ve been learning more about other variety of plants to add to my MD garden that I’ve never thought to bc of the your videos so thank you for that. For the big Colorado spruce, I wanted to ask you whether you’ve considered shaping it as a topiary/standard? I loved how the Mophead cypress topiary turned out so maybe it’ll turn out just as good. I saw a few of my neighbors who did this and they look beautiful - I admire it every time I pass by their house ☺️. It would be a shame to cut that big tree down.

Hi Janette! thank you so much!! I'm so glad I have learned to pay attention to the tags on growth. I do still tend to place things a little close, and honestly its because I want to fill in gaps, and I like the way things look layered. Also, because I don't want to ask my husband to lift more sod lol. You could certainly find some compact blue evergreens, or even a wheeping one that takes less space. Hi Marie! The Colorado blue spruce unfortunately is too large for us to be able to transplant ourselves. If we call in a company it would be very expensive and there would be no guarantee it would survive. I sure wish we could though. We'll have to plant the small replacement in a better spot and hope it does as well as this one has.

I agree. I went all in on conifers when I moved into the New England area. Is needlecast just not an issue for you in that part of Massachusetts? I have been reluctant to plant a Colorado blue for just that reason….
Hi Emma, I do have some browing inside my evergreens, I believe its part of the natural shedding that occurs in many evergreens in Winter.
@@HookedandRooted Lucky you. I think it just depends on the area.. and near me, there are a lot of blue spruce that look ravaged by either needle cast or tip blight. The weather just is not what it was -there is just a lot more stress on young trees… maybe if I planted the trees 10 years ago, they would be more resilient…

Love the video! When I saw you had 2 blue atlantic cedars I thought to want to ask a question about mine. I'm in zone 6 (Ohio) and have a 3 yr. old one on the south mulch bed. We had horrible cold frigid weather -11 w/high winds which brought a real feel down to -49......yikes! It happened a couple of days around Christmas.......brutal! I went out a few weeks ago to check my trees and shrubs and noticed it had turned brown but had noticably alive green tip growth. Have you ever seen this? Is it freezer burn? Your thoughts are welcome.......thanks!
Hi Jackie, Sounds like its suffering from a little bit of winter burn. I have that on my boulevard cypress at the moment. So long as you see green growth on tips, and its an established planting, it should be fine, and push out new Spring growth.
We recently purchased a Nellie R. Stevens Holly. The tree farm we purchased it from told us to feed the tree each spring with an evergreen fertilizer. Just wondering if you feed your evergreens. If so, what do you use? Also, what form? Spikes? Liquid? Granules? Thank you very much!
Hi Ruth, I fertilize all my evergreens in very early Spring, so by the end of March. I use a granular fertilizer called "Hollytone" which you would sprinkle in a circular pattern around the drip edge of the plant. You can use this fertilzer on almost every evergreen (that is acid loving) except boxwood and arborvitae (they are not acid loving). Hope this helps. Sad have to cut down blue spruce that's healthy..I just lost mine had planted 20 years ago...to some disease 😢
I'm Sorry you lost yours. They are beautiful trees. I am sad for the day that mine has to come down also. I would NEVER cut down a tree that was growing beautifully and was healthy unless absolutely necessary. It is far to expensive for us to have a company move it, and there would be no guarantee it would survive.
In my area (Northern Ky, 6a) the deer have ate all 5 of my Thuja Green Giants. 😢😖🤬

I am a little concerned as to how close you planted many of these conifers. Just concerned for your foundation. I have always planted about 3 ft off foundation so at their biggest size they are at least 2 to 3 feet from my house.
Hi Amanda, Yes some are. They were planted 10+ years ago when I wasn't yet a gardener and didn't know better. I have researched the varities I have planted and they mostly have shallow non aggressive root systems. We keep a close eye on them, and currently the only one causing us some concern is the Colorado Blue Spruce. Great tip, so important to space things properly. Now that I know better, I do better.
I agree. I plant a minimum of ten feet from a foundation.

@@julesdavis1845 I feel like 10 feet away is a bit far. Except for many of the evergreens that have extensive root systems. Then they need to be out. There are many other things you can plant closer to the house. If you were meaning certain evergreens than I agree.
I think it is important to note that there are some conifers that can indeed be foundation plants, such as those that derive from witches brooms that at 30 years may only be 3 x 3 shrubs. There are so many cultivars of conifers out there…
If possible. move the spruce, We have moved 5 evergreen in the
last 25 years. now they are over 30ft. tall
Hi Rosmary, The caliper on the tree is about 5-6", so its much too large for us to handle ourselves. Calling in a company would make it too costly, with no guarantee of survival. We weighed the pros and cons, and planting a replacement somewhere else in the garden was the best choice for us. Its great you were able to move yours. I'm sure that was hard work as well, but worth it. They are gorgeous trees.
Is it worth it to you to have a crew come move that large tree?
Hi Jules, It would be far too expensive, with no guarantee that the tree would survive. We've looked into it.
