My Bodyguard is a 1980 American family comedy drama film directed by Tony Bill (his directorial debut), and written by Alan Ormsby. The film stars Chris Makepeace, Adam Baldwin (in his first film role), Matt Dillon, Martin Mull, and Ruth Gordon. The film was the debut of both Baldwin and an uncredited Jennifer Beals and was Joan Cusack's first major film.
Clifford Peache (Chris Makepeace) is a sensitive, well-to-do teen who becomes the target of bully Melvin Moody (Matt Dillon) after he starts attending a new school. Tired of being picked on, Clifford recruits brooding tough kid Ricky Linderman (Adam Baldwin) to be his bodyguard. While this initially works, and Clifford and Linderman form an unlikely friendship, soon circumstances strain their bond. As Clifford is forced to confront Moody again, Linderman has to deal with his own troubled past.
Factoid: The film was named as one of the top ten films of 1980 by National Board of Review. It was also nominated by the Writers Guild of America for Best Drama Written Directly for the Screen, and in his analysis of the 53rd Academy Awards, Gary Arnold of The Washington Post wrote that My Bodyguard was unfairly snubbed when it failed to receive an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay.

I'll never get tired of watching classics like this. Nostalgic to the max. Reminds one of a simpler time.
Chicago is hell. Cant believe this was a better time. This was right before crack took it by storm
@@jermalshemism3367well it definitely was
I remember seeing this at the drive in
Adam Baldwin as Ricky Linderman in My Bodyguard (1980) is a very good example. Excellent choice, Joss Whedon for Firefly!
❤❤❤
One of the all-time great "Buddies slay the bullies" movies.
“Open up, Ricky. You’re among friends. You’re among friends.”
I’ve always found that scene very moving.
Agreed; very innocent and poignant, like many other scenes in this film
Adam’s film debut and a pretty damn good job considering that!
Ruth Gordon, so delightful in this role and sensitive when she needs to be.
was a great time to be a kid in the 80's
Martin Mull is another overlooked and underrated actor. I love his good natured, likable, and dry-humored persona that keeps frustration in check. Mr. Mom, a short-lived TV show called Domestic Life, and that mock talk show with Fred Willard were my favorite.
He's gone now. May he rest in peace.
It really made me proud and feel good that Cliff finally had enough courage and self-respect to fight Melvin himself once and for all, instead of relying on a bodyguard. Much more than I can say for myself in my school days. Even though he was a novice at fighting and hardly knew what to do he did it anyway. Even though he knew he might look a fool.
Hard to believe this movie was 44 years ago
Nothing like the 80’s
...and this was just as the 1980s were starting. I was kid in Chicago when this was filmed.
I wish I could find another golden gem of an 80's movie called "Russkies". It's super cute and has a very young Joaquin Phoenix and the kid from "A Christmas Story".
More like the greaties
One of my favorite movies. First saw it when I was 8 years old back in 1981. This movies does bring back memories.
Me too.
Reminds of my childhood. A beautiful and simple time.
Are you a 1973 baby too? I was born 12/16/1973. This movie brings me back to a simple time also!
@@TBF101988 I was born in 1972. I first seen this movie Summer of 1981. I wasn't quite 9 years old yet
Me too

The confession subway scene starting at 1:23:08 puts a lump in my throat each time. Baldwin really deserved as Oscar for this.
Nah, I'm glad he didn't. This was his first starring role at the age of 17, right out of the gate. An Oscar nod or worse, a win would've cursed him. He was awesome, though 👍
I didn’t realize Ruth Gordon was in this. She made any movie she was in so much better. She seemed like a genuinely nice person as well.
She’s playing her usual eccentric, goofy self in this. She seemed like the same kind of person in Rosemary’s Baby, except with a lot of sinister intentions underneath.
Very good points.
One of my favorites. 1979 - 1980 movies that I just love:
My Bodyguard 1980
Ordinary People 1980
An Unmarried Woman 1979
Private Benjamin 1980
Superman 1979
Popeye 1980
9 to 5 1980
Don’t forget little darlings. :)
Both unmarried woman and Superman were also 1978. :)
I think imma gonna check this list man
Baldwin was excellent in this. I really hope he gets more work now that he's in his early 60s. Good quality actor
I don’t think he ever got the recognition he deserved. Only other movies I can recall with him are Full Metal Jacket and Next of Kin. I know he’s made a lot more, but those were the only two that first came to mind.
Independence Day
One of the greatest movies.
It means so much to me.
Family vacation 1980 and I was 7, my brother 10. The Empire Strikes Back was sold out.
We saw this instead having never heard of it.
It's amazing.
Yes it is - I loved the music !!!! watched this when I was 11 and asked Mum to find the ost ....she was told in the store that it was not available on anyformat - cut a long story short - a few years later I discovered Dave Valentin when I was in 15 in 1992 - bought the cd and noticed it was on GRP a record label owned by Dave Grusin .....years later guess who I met ? Dave Grusin himself !! now 46 I own virtually entire GRP catalog and am a jazz expert : ) beautiful film.
One of a kind movie.
Every character works. Especially Grandma.
And the high school actors don't seem like 30 yr olds playing teens.
Great movie. Adam Baldwin plays the troubled bereaved brother brilliantly
And he was only 17! Awesome chops for that age. :)
Great movie! A classic like this never dies.
Such an underrated gem of a movie. The scene where Linderman gets to ride his motorcycle is thrilling. Anyone who's worked for weeks or months on a project (much less a year!) and finally completes it successfully can understand what a great feeling that is. I didn't get it when I saw this at age seven, but now, middle-aged, it really resonates. The scene where he's emasculated and humiliated by Mooney's bodyguard, and his bike is destroyed is as crushing as anything you'll see on screen.
Ohhh man, yeah definitely, I felt so bad for him, that scene was tough to watch, which makes the ending so satisfying, when he beats the crap out of him!
I remember my mom watching this in the fall of 1980 in the neighboring theater because she didn’t want to watch The Empire Strikes Back for the tenth time with my sister and me. I like how the fight scenes are real, with awkward punches and sloppiness. If this was filmed today the fight scenes would resemble some choreographed Matrix shit. 43 years ago. Hard to believe 😢
We need a remake of this movie that sends a cleat message about forgiveness of one's self and how bullying is wrong.
It would be a different movie.
@jannea4318 different as in what the original was? Because the original seems to shout out those aspects.
My mom had the same happy stay young attitude as Ruth Gordon and the funny thing is we share the same last name. Rip Mrs/Mrs Gordons...
1:43 hey that’s my house!!! Wow!!!
Cool ❤
This is too underrated it’s just well done. Simple yet related movie for me❤
there is an incredible sense of location in this one. The characters work really well and the acting is good as well, but it is the way it goes through the city making it feel like a living place, with the nostalgic music as well contributing. It hits so hard, I admire this little film so much.
Ruth and John houseman! Their scenes were hilarious!
Adam Baldwin in Full Metal Jacket as Animal Mother was bad ass.😂
And he assassinated the Alien in captivity at area 51, in Independents day.
@@Artificialintelligentle And his best role to date is when he played a man called Jayne!
My favorite character is actually the teacher who tells him the truth about what happened.
She was awesome! ❤😊
This was a part of my childhood..
A good part..💚
my bodyguard -- my favorite. what movies should be. a so-called friend once said it was just the type of movie i would like. YUP guilty. it was just the kind of movie a bully and bottom-feeder would hate. great story telling and great cast.
I was 11 and my parent would drop me at the theatre and go shop...come back for me. So not only a great movie as a child but a great memory aswell. Ty for posting. I have the dvd actually but nice to cast it to.
My parents did the same thing every weekend..great memories! I saw all the John Wayne, James Bond and the bad news bears movies too lol, Good Time to ne alive.
Loved this movie growing up. Probably watched it with my brother and sisters 15 times.
I’m actually having my son watch this me now
THANK YOU FOR POSTING!!!!
Excellent gem of a movie, loved it as a kid, love it still. I'm sure you caught Jennifer Beals, a few years before Flashdance
Mr. Martin Mull RIP....
Francis Ford Coppola must have seen this movie when he cast Matt Dillon as Dallas Winston. The two characters are so alike.
I’m glad my dad told me about this movie. 3 years after this movie was filmed Moody became a Greaser, and 7 years after this was also filmed Linderman became a U.S. Marine and served in Vietnam. Also at 1:23:06 to 1:24:40 I felt so sad listening to Linderman’s story about his brother’s death. I also felt very sad when Linderman was trying to stay out of trouble and let Mike and the other bullies push him to where his bike got submerged into the water. Other than all of that, great movie and again I’m glad my dad told me about it and he was only 10 years of age when it came out.
Unpopular opinion, I had a HUGE crush on Linderman!!!
Adam is a handsome guy. It’s understandable. :)
Me too! ❤
girl me too! 😭
I didn’t realize John Housman had a role in this movie until now. Always played snooty authoritarian characters. The Paper Chase, Rollerball, and Ed Stratton’s father in Silver Spoon’s among them.
I watched this movie on this RUclips channel for the first time in years the day before Martin Mull died last week. Wow! Great actor with an always dry sense of humor.
And according to this movie, Clifford was not a rich kid. He had the perks of limo service and living in a penthouse of a nice hotel because his father (Martin Mull), was the general manager and on call 24/7. I doubt if that’s real life then or now.
The bully trilogy; My Bodyguard, Karate Kid and Three O'clock High
Those are great. I remember linking as well Lucas, Stand by me, Can't buy me love... 80's movies ❤
Lakeview high school back in the day
always thought this was a great movie but just now realizing the depth and levels that are in this script, not too mention the character development and story behind each one. incredible writing and acting
This is the only movie with teens and about teens I’ve seen that didn’t have any kind of rock or contemporary soundtrack Just classical music.
First movie I ever watched on HBO👍
Matt Dillion did play that Threatening Sneering Bully quite well
He did. Must be why he played that type in several movies lol

This is really such a great little film. The acting from the kid characters is so good. I remember watching this back when I was 10 years old
I just watched a video of movie bullies getting their due. This wasn’t on the list, and it’s better than all of them.
why dont you just shut up before i take your lunch money!
BEST MOVIE EVER!!!! Finally found it!!!!❤❤❤❤
So glad you did! It really is a great one. ❤
Long before school shootings
long before ZOG fk'd america's streets up
I really like the teacher. She was cool. 😊❤️
A slice of Life movie. A Masterpiece.❤
I’ve walked those same halls 🗿
This movie was one of my faves when I was in the 7th grade, if my memory serves me right.
I remember I watched this movie for the first time at my friends house.
I was a little bato, when I got to see the advertising for this picture. Great, I do not get tired of watching it now.
Great Movie 🎥
Classic ❤!Miss those Days ❤
Thank you! Very nostalgic for me
One of my childhood favorites ❤ 👑🫡
Great memories watching this movie ! Thank you 🙏
R.I.P. Martin Mull
He was so cocky laughing until Clifford sock his ass in the nose
It’s incredible really that neither of them went for the nose before then. In real life that’s usually one of the first places people hit. lol
I first saw this at a bday party in gr 4, and for the next 3 years was afraid of high school b/c of it, lol
I love Moody😭😭
❤It's very fantastic film
I saw when junior highschool👍😀
Thank you for uploading this!
Me and my brothers took the bus to see this when it came out on a Sunday at Severance Center Cleveland Heights, Ohio
Adam Baldwin
Classic. Thank You for putting this up
Love this movie--TY!!!
It's a good movie. I hate bullies. I too had to deal with them in school.
@DaathielWell the difference now is social media bullies are more cowards, hiding behind a phone or a computer, talking shit, when in all reality, most wouldn't say that to a person face to face.
hahhahaahahahahahahahahahahahhahahahahahahahaaha Victim!

I knew I recognised Norm there. And Mike was terrifying
Cute. I've never seen this before.
a must see movie
Wonderful film. I was 24
What a great movie❤
Love this movie
I luv this movie❤
Ricky and Mike look like a couple of middle aged dads.
He needs to eat his lunch lol
when I watch in movies the level of bullism in american school I cannot understand how this could have been tolerated if true. Seems school instead of being a safe place for many kids transformed into a real nightmare. really really sad!
Oh trust me, it's still like this
It’s tolerated much less than it was back then but it’s still tolerated.
You sound like you’re from another country and that bullying doesn’t happen there. I hope you don’t think that because I am pretty sure it isn’t true!
You know they say in real life Matt Dillion is a super nice guy!!!!
Often actors are. They play against type. :)
@@EphemeralProductions yep and the other bully also he is nice too!!!
Good movie
