Shootout of different mastering compressors (Bx Masterdesk, Shadow Hills, SPL Iron, etc.) or even some of these all-in-one mastering programs such as Newfangled Elevate, IK Lurrsen, TC Finalizer, Izotope Ozone, etc... though I realize those require deep-dives on their own and might be too big of a video. Maybe a 10 mile view of them, work on a master using each software, compare the results and explain the pro/con/easy/difficult aspects of each.
I realize you are mostly a tracking and mix guy, not a master guy... but many of your viewers are BOTH (amateurishly) by necessity and we appreciate your honesty, insight and experience!

I use an H3000, H9, and Eventide plugins. You can't go wrong with their products. Combining algorithms, H9000 appears to have excellent headroom. The sonic possibilities seem endless. There's a lot in there to learn!

I remember when I was doing a few weeks work experience in a local studio who just had bought an Eventide. This was early 90s and I was about 14 years old so I can't remember any details, but I remember that this thing was incredible and the name Eventide stuck with me ever since. A few years ago I was able to try the H9 Max which is a lot of fun and I will have to buy one some day. Thanks for that video. A lot of fun.

I use Orville and H8000fw units here. Upgrade from a 7500. I use the samplers on both for quick capture of ideas. The tuner preset is another go to tool, accurate tuning and intonation. Each preset is like trying a new food, which takes time to interpret and digest. Reason being, some are designed for use after a guitar, others after a speaker. Some output a dry blend, others are simply saturated. Pre/Post and Series/Parallel. With so many uses over the years, Eventide includes a staggering amount of presets in every Harmonizer, which were carried forward to the new units. For example, the H9000 has all the H9 presets, all the DSP7000 presets, the GTR4000 presets, and the H3000 presets. I pity the new user who has to interpret a H9000. That’ll take some time to get your head around. For a unique look at Eventide’s capabilities, search Italo De Angelis website and library upgrades. I’ve purchased his addition libraries and could not say enough good things about them.
Funny how Warren’s H3000-S unit didn’t make the sample image of the Harmonizer line. Every other Harmonizer pictured but his. The early H3000 line was diversified for broadcast, studio, sampler enabled, etc and came with unique preset libraries, in other words... not all H3000s are the same. In fact they’re quite unique.
The Orville is still my favorite. I still haven’t bought the H9000, for obvious reasons. -Jim

26:20 I can hear that in a section where it breaks down to vocal only (say for a line or two, towards the end of a song/final choruses etc) with the actual vocal soloed in it's "correctly" effected state with that swirling effect on a doubled dry vocal simultaneously, but mixed subtly in the background. It would probably be quite effective and moody, haunting, surreal, or however it could be described. I loved it as soon as I heard it but it was just too wet to be pleasing to the ear. That made me think how it would be if it were balanced properly. Cool find!

I was born in 1971 when Eventide started. I turn 50 this year.
It's amazing to me that you can, for all intents and purposes, buy a lifetime to audio FX innovation in a rack-mount box.
And being that it's broken away from purpose-built DSP silicone to CPU abstraction layer, it means that it's future-proof because new innovations are just a firmware update away.
For those interested, an ARM processor is what Apple's new M1 computers are based on.

For those who didnt get the "Bug" comment (re plugins being literally plug-inable EPROMS) , the term Bug came frome the 1950s days when memory on computers where based on magnetic coils, and an error occured in the software because a literal creepy-crawly bug climbed into the memory cabinet , got fried and shorted out the memory. So De-bugging, involved removing the hapless splattered bug from the hardware. I'm surpised you knew that bit of IT trivia Warren, most IT geeks don't , let alone studio guys.

I think the only thing that kills me about modern Eventide stuff, is that there's relatively little reason this couldn't be written for x86 and run on your computer as a plugin. But, they want to sell hardware (little/no piracy there!). I don't blame them, but there's really not much super magic about a box with ARM processors in 2019 that couldn't be done in x86 instructions as well. Or heck, run on an iPad Pro (which is just a variant of the ARM processor).
Still, they are making good stuff, and I've always enjoyed their gear and will likely do so again in the future.

Hi David, yes, they do make amazing stuff! Interesting point, I asked a couple of computer boffins (I'm definitely not one! Haha) and they said the amount of processing this unit would need would exceed almost any computer than ran a DAW, other plug ins etc simultaneously. Which seems quite logical when you've actually used this beast!

If a plugin is programmed to efficiently use multiple cores, an AMD Ryzen 9 with its 12 cores should be able to handle the processing load comfortably, even a Ryzen 7 with 8 cores should be able to do a good job.

Vlad Snape thanks for sharing! Elsewhere here someone said this might be a great alternative for them because to get a computer as powerful as it would cost X price and now they wouldn’t need to get something that powerful. So between your responses it points to where you want to spend your money.

Vlad Snape although of course if you max out your computer you still don’t have this unit, you’d then have invest in the technology and 40 years of doing this to create what Eventide has created!

@@Producelikeapro It is only the software development tools that need to become easier to use that is holding things up, and within 5 or so years, this will change. The hardware is already very capable, there is a lot of processing power available in mid-range to top-end graphics cards, and the architecture of the cards is ideally suited to parallel processing and number crunching, which is what you want for a DSP solution.

Can an H949 be repaired these days, or do they contain a lot of weird chips that are no longer available? I have one that seems to have a problem in the A/D-department, I think (the FX work, but the output audio is garbled).

I'm thinking "plug-in" is a fairly ubiquitous term with application in many areas of life. In the case of software signal processors, I imagine the usage is due to the patching of hardware units into the signal path, as they are plugged into the board or patch bay with patch cords.

Any guitar effects you want to use, the guitarist will use their pedal board of effects from $100-400 as well as their preferred amp.
Plug ins from so many companies are so good. I can't imagine anyone spending $6,000 for this. The SOS review stated it has a noisy fan and is not recommended to be next to where your mixing.

Hi Warren, Love to hear more about some of the Sonic Farm products. Your good friend Jack Douglas uses them. They even modified one of their mic pre/saturation devices: Xcalibur JC Saturation Preamp - the JC stands for Joe Chiccarelli. Boris is a wonderful and very knowledgeable man. He'll be at winter NAMM.

Eventide's marketing (or lack thereof) for this box is a real head-scratcher. There are VERY few videos on this $8000 flagship, and of those, only a fraction let us actually HEAR the thing for any length of time. This video is THIRTY MINUTES - and almost ALL of it is just talking about the box. Finally, when we get to hear something, it's 20 minutes in... and MONO. Having been in this industry for 3+ decades I know that it's world class based on Eventide's history, and maybe that's what they're counting on? Whatever the case, it sure doesn't seem like anyone wants to actually sell this box or its astounding capabilities by letting people hear it - they just want to *talk* about it. Really, really bizarre.
Funny enough, when trying to find some great demos of the H9000, I kept stumbling on videos of the 20-year-old Eclipse. It sounds so good I jumped over to Reverb and bought one. I would have been interested in the H9000... if I could actually hear one.

I'd be happy even if you just played music like your intro every video. But can you plug an unbalanced mono cable in if it's in your rack D: If you're silliy enough to pay 7000€ for a producer multieffect mammoth to get pitch shift and reverb effects in your guitar rack :D You know, for the nostalgy and legacy.
This was an amazing lecture on Eventide/H-series history.

Let me see if I'm getting this straight. So the 9K can insert a channel strips worth of different effects onto potentially 8, 16, 32 or even 96 different tracks in my DAW, depending on the version of the 9K, but my Mac's CPU will be running easy because it's not processing all those effects?
What I'm getting at is could I get big, expensive computer sound to my mixes with a less than big & expensive computer? If that's the case that it can pick up the processing slack from an older, less powerful computer, the the 7K price tag actually makes some sense.
