Both Lennon and Waters were the most acerbic and moody members of their respective bands, so it's no wonder they didn't get along. Either way, they were both geniuses, and you can see some influence of Lennon on Roger's lyrics.
Yeah, let's not forget that Pink Floyd weren't famous at this stage. Wonder whether Lennon followed the group in the 70s, as they reached mega fame? Wonder if he even remembered any meeting ?
@@samsung-ok4ki - I like both bands but am a much bigger fan of The Beatles, who I basically worship but the other comment is correct. Pink Floyd are one of the most popular and best-known bands in history. "Darkside of the Moon" is in the top ten selling albums of all time.
@@samsung-ok4ki Are you on drugs or were you on drugs. Pink Floyd had one hit and were unknown? 😂 That's actually comical. And today more guitarists are influenced by David Gilmour than the Beatles or Floyd's Roger Waters. The Beatles may be a household name but no more than Jimi Hendrix or Pink Floyd. Roger was and is to this day a nutjob and Pink Floyd was glad to see him part.
@@HooksBill No so if you are in an elevator in Taiwan, they can tell you right away when its a Beatles or Elvis song, Pink Floyd they never heard of, they had a good run but short
That is a good parallel. Paul and David are the friendly ones, so it makes sense they became friends, but John and Roger were the jerks (I love them both, but they can sometimes be jerks) so it is funny that they clashed. I think if they powered through some initial awkward encounters, then they would have gotten along eventually. They were all musical geniuses.
I don't agree, they would regularly invite friends into the studio and their circle. David Crosby from CS and N, the stones, the monkees, Donovan, clapton, Billy Preston to name a few
@@petef7323 exactly, they played with clapton, roy orbison, some of the rolling stones, billy preston, etc. They had to. Coz, in part, their creativity and economic success depended on exploring the world, hanging out with people, getting to know them and so on. They did not allow themselves to be close off with the world.
@@petef7323 When THEY invited somebody is another matter and it wasn't as frequent as you think. Billy Preston and Clapton were the only times they collaborated with an outside musician (not counting orchestras) Pink Floyd were not friends with the Beatles and were given the Beatle freeze out. None of the band would dare bring a non-musician personal friend to the studio. They didn't even like when Brian Epstein would pop in. That's why the other three had such a hard time with Yoko's presence during the white album.
One sad takeaway from all this is the realization that the Beatles were friends and truly loved / cared for each other ( even though they could have some wicked fights ), and Pink Floyd weren’t. As a Pink Floyd fan that’s kind of difficult to hear, but the fact is that right now you have two old men who don’t seem to give a damn about each other, and another doing his own thing. I believe Gilmour has said that he didn’t have any friends in the band - more of a working relationship.
I'm a HUGE Floyd fan and a (practicing) musician/guitarist. Dave is probably my favorite guitarist of all time and a significant influence on me as a musician. But I've seen a lot (many, many) of his interviews and I don't think he and I would be friends if I were a peer in his circle. I think he can be (frequently) cold and impersonal. I suspect Rick or Nick may say they were friends; it's Dave who limits things. That...and as much as I love Dave as a guitarist, and a part of Floyd, the answer to "by the way, which one's Pink?", is undoubtedly Roger Waters. Not the same vibe without Roger...not even close.
Funny. I've always got the impression Roger was the odd one out. It seems to me he was eccentric and emotionally insecure. With little social antenna's. One may say John Lennon was likewise, but he could also be charming at times.
@@entropy_sci After the bullshit Dave and the other members of the band copped after Waters spat the dummy and threw his toys out of the cot, it left a mark on those other members. Fook Waters and his self entitled persona. Dave still has a good repertoire with Nick Mason, so it's all good with those two. There are of course other elements to the band's relationships, but that is for another time.
@@entropy_sci I did not get that impression of Gilmour at all, he got along very well with Rick, especially later and Nick too. He also got along very well with Roger UNTIL after Dark Side....then the MASSIVE egos kicked in, especially Roger who now fancied himself far more important than just merely a rock star. At this age, with not too many years left, I don't blame Gilmour one single bit in surrounding himself with those people he wants to be around and doing the type of music he wants to. I also don't blame him for not wanting to be around Roger, he is a very difficult person, by most accounts, and seems angry and disaffected most of the time. Watch the films behind the scenes of his last 2 tours, Gilmour is very happy, very outgoing, and surrounded by many friends and family where as Roger seems to take himself far more seriously.
i respect them as musicians but both were/are complete POS as people. RW still defends all bloody dictatorships in the world and lennon beated all his GFs and was a major c...nt as well as RW
Well, I wouldn't blame the Fab at all. After all, they were at work, they were on the clock and fully absorbed in the process. This was no socializing time. Besides, who were the Pink Floyd in those days? Their golden time was still yet to come.
As a somewhat “Acerbic” person myself, my encounters with people like that often start not so well. But, once guards are let down they can turn out to be your best buddies.
Now imagine if you’re working on intensely private work and some cats just come in. I’ve seen this first hand and most don’t like it. Most artists don’t want uninvited people in the studio.
I have no idea what this was about, but Lennon was the sort who butted heads with people just to size them up. Not one of his better traits. But to get in his good graces you had to stand up to him.
Pink Floyd were actually mentioned in the 1968 Hunter Davis biography of The Beatles. It's mentioned that they stopped into the studio. This was probably not a very formal introduction and The Beatles probably just thought they were just another group of the many they probably met. This may have been a huge deal for Pink Floyd but not one for the fab four.

The truly sad thing to me is that at the time just a couple years before Lennon’ murder, he seemed to be really changing and becoming less abrasive and more of a family man and sweet man. I’ve always been more of a McCartney guy but to this day the murder of Lennon is still such a tragedy on so many levels.
Absolutely! He was re-emerging after years away, there was a whole new audience eager to see him and it would’ve been great to see his take on the music scene
I think that's right. He was taking more responsibility for the media fueled feud, and very honest and introspective. I think we missed a lot on what he had to say.
Absolutely. He seemed to be really working hard on himself and becoming the man he probably always wanted to be. He is the one celebrity who does not cease to fascinate me.
Paul and Linda were meant to be on Dark Side, they recorded spoken word pieces but were left off because they were too recognisable amongst the other voices so it was distracting
The video is not talking about Pink Floyd being dissaponted, Roger specifically did not like his meeting with Lennon. They are too similar to like each other.
I mean what were they supposed to do, stop the session and have some tea and crackers? The fact that they got close enough to have an interaction as an unknown band and even got to sit in on a session seems like proof to me that The Beatles were somewhat down to Earth.
David Gilmour and Paul McCartney have worked together quite well. The Beatles didn't know The Floyd from Adam and Waters and Lennon were not the friendliest of people.
Those 2 albums were made in the same year 1967 but the music was t0taly different I lean towards Sgt it was and still ls one of the best albums ever made
Right after The Beatles finished in Studio 2, The Zombies recorded much of their classic album Odessey and Oracle in the same studio using the same sound engineer Geoff Emerick and some of The Beatles' instruments including Lennon's mellotron and an electric harpsichord. Pepper, Piper, & Oddessey, all classics -- what was in the water at Abbey Road Studio that summer?
I ran into Peter Jenner at a Billy Bragg concert (I think around 1990-1991), I had no idea who I was talking to at first, he was talking a lot about Syd and Floyd’s early days. We talked for quite awhile, I was a little taken aback when he told me who he was…he told me about bits and pieces of the recording of Piper and how the Beatles were right next door at Abbey Road and that they were very interested in Syd and how creative he was, and peaked in from time to time while the Floyd were recording.
Why should The Beatles have been interested? The Beatles were tired of meeting new people and Pink Floyd were largely unknown and unproven in 1967. Having said that, love both The Beatles and Pink Floyd!

It's only natural to have competitive attitudes towards each other. With the Beatles' enormous success, and meeting them in studio while creating another hit album with fresh ideas. Then "the pink floyd" walks in. Their songs are not about "love". Their first hit single Arnold Layne is about a clothesline thief. On the evening of 21 March 1967 They were brought together in Abbey Road and exchanged hellos. And paul and john went to see them at the Music & Art event, listening to "Interstellar Overdrive". So they were all very aware of each other and their talents. Lennon was a very down to earth guy, and Waters is a show off sort. There is a place for all, and I like ALL of their albums!!!
I don’t if it was so much competitive attitude, I’ve worked in studios at the top level for many years and cats don’t want others cats coming into your session when not invited. Geoff Emerick talked about this meeting in his book It was all Norman Smith. He just brought them in. Those dudes were trying to work. Often times people don’t want others hearing unfinished work for many reasons. Plus Floyd were unknowns. Certainly they were like who the F are these people in our sessions. They were largely closed session. Emericks book is a great read.

From the moment they were number one, no one could enter the studio without an appointment. Then they invited friends but only on certain occasions and only they decided who. The problem here was that Norman Smith had stopped working with them so he was no longer welcome. It was an ill-advised decision on Smith's part to show up as it created a climate of tension as Waters says at the end.

The Beatles were in 'the zone' creating a masterpiece. Everything outside of that was white noise. But the idea of Floyd's debut and the Sgt. Pepper being recorded under the same roof at the same time is jaw dropping to think about. Truly an apex as far as modern music goes.
I'm pretty sure John was like that most of the time, at least in the 1960s. That was just his personality. I don't think he meant to be rude or anything like that. The fact that Roger was also a bit like this didn't help either.

Personalities don’t matter. Bruised egos don’t matter. What matters is that Waters is carrying on Lennon’s legacy of using his fame and considerable popular influence to call attention to the blight of war and imperialism. Doesnt sound like a situation that would lend itself to a great social interaction. Beatles were in the middle of a session and Pink Floyd didn’t even have an album under their belt yet. “Nice to meet you, thanks for stopping by” It’s the only time John and Roger met. Doesn’t sound so much that they didn’t get along than sparks didn’t fly. Also, Syd wrote all of Pink Floyd’s stuff back then so it’s not even like it was a meeting of the two genius songwriters at that time. If John was even the slightest bit aware of Pink Floyd through the studio and Norman Smith connection , he would probably view Syd as the bandleader.
1. The Beatles were musical geniuses and they were WORKING. Would you walk into Picasso's studio while he was painting and inspired and expect him to stop and chat with you? Everyone wanted to talk to The Beatles, if they kept stopping they would lose creative momentum and we wouldn't have Sgt Peppers. 2. Roger Waters is a prick. EVERYONE says he is a prick. He argues with everyone and no one can stand to work with him. I know people that have worked with him only for a few hours and they say he is a prick. As someone said there wasn't much to separate them from many other bands who wanted to meet the Beatles at that time.
It was the fault of Norman Smith for bursting in with Pink Floyd in tow when the Beatles were not expecting the visit and were preoccupied with recording Rita. Plus they (Beatles) were not very comfortable with people they didnt know showing up at their recording sessions. Paul thought Floyd was a very interesting band, he was very aware of them and thought they would be ones to take 'progressive music" to new levels. Whereas the Beatles were done with the big production except for Walrus they really were down another alley with their next real album, White Album. Floyd, King Crimson, Yes and a few others would do very well with those types of albums in the future. The Beatles as a band never really went down further down the road with that unless you want to count John's avant garde stuff with yoko and Revolution 9 which was really just self indulgent of John. He should have kept it on his solo stuff with Yoko.

I know Roger Waters once said he couldn't decide between John Lennon and Bob Dylan who was his favourite songwriter. If you think. In the 1970s it took Floyd 2 years to make each album, but in the 1960s the Beatles were making 2 albums a year to begin with, 3 singles a year, making a film, '64, '65, and touring constantly. Even when they gave up touring they were still coming up with albums like Rubber Soul (Just before they stopped touring), Revolver, Sgt. Pepper, White album, Get Back sessions, Abbey Road, singles like the double a-side Day Tripper/ We Can Work It Out, Paperback Writer/ Rain, Strawberry Field's Forever/ Penny Lane, Hey Jude/ Revolution, Get Back/ Don't Let Me Down, Come Together/Something. Dylan was coming out with The Freewheelin, The Times They Are A Changing, Another Side Of, Bringing It all Back Home, Highway 61 Revisited, Blonde On Blonde, John Wesley Harding, Basement Tapes, Nashville Skyline. Also, I can't stand the Piper at the Gates of Dawn. I'm actually not a fan of the initial wave of psychedelia in the 60's, but Piper is everything I don't like about that era crammed into one album. Waters was a combination of Lennon & McCartney. His temperament and lyrics were like Lennon and his concepts, domineering control of the band later on was like McCartney.
The comparison with Mccartney is inaccurate really. Mccartney only "dominated" the band because the others were either too lazy, drugged up or too busy meditatinf and getting brainwashed by Indian gurus. Even then he was constantly encouraging them to be more productive and tried to get good music out of them. The same can't be said for Waters who became so egoitiscal to the point of becoming extremely delusional. Starting from around the time of Animals, not only did he think he was Pink Floyd he completely overestimated his own musical abilities and almost completely stopped taking musical inouts from the rest of the band during the Wall sessions - and the result was obvious - as Gilmour said "lacked soul". The two outstanding songs that drove the Wall's success - Anothet Brick and Comfortably Numb were ironically two of the most "non-Waters song" on the album. Producer Bob Ezrin wss mainky responsible for those and had to end up doing them with the help of Gilmour behind Roger's back. On the other hand with the Beatles be it Magical Mystery Tour Or Abbey Road you can still see a lot of the very best of Lennon on those and it's obvious that Mccartney wanted to still have Lennon making stuff and contributing - the problem was that Lennon him was getting lazy and couldnt be bothered so Mccartney "domineerig" was in a positive way, Waters wasnt. Also as far as concepts are concerned there is no comparison. Waters is way better than Mccartney here.
Both Roger Waters and John Lennon are Libra star signs as are Bruce Springsteen, Sting and Eminem! These singer/songwriters are outspoken and wear their heart on the sleeve!
Paul McCartney already knew them. He went to watch The Pink Floyd play at the UFO Club many times in late 1966. See Steve Turner, Beatles ’66: The Revolutionary Year (2016).
Despite Waters' reputation as a control freak and egotistical dick, I've heard nothing but good things from fans who've met him. I always hear he's courteous, patient and has a sense of humour. Look up the video of someone asking him to sign Pulse.
Both Lennon and Waters were the most acerbic and moody members of their respective bands, so it's no wonder they didn't get along. Either way, they were both geniuses, and you can see some influence of Lennon on Roger's lyrics.

I desagree. Actually they were very open worinkg with others. Examples there are many, just listen the songs and see the photos of them with company.

@@petef7323 exactly, they played with clapton, roy orbison, some of the rolling stones, billy preston, etc. They had to. Coz, in part, their creativity and economic success depended on exploring the world, hanging out with people, getting to know them and so on.

David and Rick were true friends the whole time. Nick and Roger could get along.
Funny. I've always got the impression Roger was the odd one out. It seems to me he was eccentric and emotionally insecure. With little social antenna's. One may say John Lennon was likewise, but he could also be charming at times.

There are of course other elements to the band's relationships, but that is for another time.

From the moment they were number one, no one could enter the studio without an appointment. Then they invited friends but only on certain occasions and only they decided who. It was an ill-advised decision on Smith's part to show up as it created a climate of tension as Waters says at the end.

Meanwhile, David has only had nice things to say about the members of the Beatles.
David also said his wife writes some of the recent PF songs. she's more yoko than yoko ono.
@@davedoogan6650 what an uninformed and sexist take. Wife leave ya, buddy?
Little did John Lennon know at the time but Syd Barrett would turn be the famed psychedelic genius and Roger Waters would write an album (Dark Side Of The Moon) that would eclipse any of the Beatles albums.
They both had their respective genius periods. But Waters always sounds so self-absorbed to me over the years.
I'm sure when he met Lennon pink Floyd was NOT a HUGE act.... THEY grew very slowky
Big enough for the Beatles to go and watch them at the UFO club
@@doscwolny2221 Floyd did NOT have a gold album until 3 years AFTER the beatles broke up ..., BUT They did have a as long as the beatles were AROUND record of non success and member changes.....And , how the hell would You expect Lennon or Dylan or Elvis to HAVE BEEN TO HIM anyway
@@bobbybrooks4826 where did I say they had a gold standard album at that point. They were still a jam band. What I said is correct! And I never said they had anywhere near the instant success as the Beatles.
What is wrong with you myopic fanboys/girls.
In fact I rate the Beatles as the greatest followed by Floyd and then Zep.
Why is your idea of success based on big selling albums?
Eg , the velvet underground and love didn’t sell heaps but just like Floyd and the Beatles still revolutionary
@@doscwolny2221 if You know about the Beatles Then You know that John had a peculiar personality due to a bizarro dad and absent mother...Dealing with who he was as a solo act and just Dealing with his success was a Lot.. AND, with all that he was dead JUst 7 years after pink Floyd became a official member of the club with Their gold album. If he came off snotty obviously John didnt like his stuff or know HIS stuff because he wasnt a EVIL person or an asshole, just moré complex... AND,it's REALLY not good form to put down Your betters especially based on minor things
@@bobbybrooks4826 I’m sorry but just when exactly did I put down the Beatles. I talked facts, you talked emotions. Why?
At what point am I attacking the Beatles.
Imagine sitting in on the recording of lovely Rita...what a tune
@@sanjay9793 I stand thoroughly corrected…
Both Roger Waters and John Lennon are Libra star signs as are Bruce Springsteen, Sting and Eminem! These singer/songwriters are outspoken and wear their heart on the sleeve!
ROGER WATERS È UN GRANDE!!!!!... UN UOMO DAL CARATTERE FORTE, DETERMINATO, UNA PERSONA ECCEZIONALE, UN PROFESSIONISTA UNICO, INIMITABILE ECCELLENTE.
I've never clicked with any musicians they always think they are somehow special
Was a musician for ages
Just saw this title. WHO FOOKIN’ CARES? !
Roger Waters looks far better as an older man than he did in the 60s and 70s
he looks decidedly more Richard Gere-ish.
Pete Jones* Hi Pete, you are right. Apparently, he stopped looking at himself in the mirror 🪞!!! 💚* Jerry.🗽
What;s incredible is that PATGOD is actually better then Pepper
I think not.
I like both Pepper and Piper, but I remember from my school days that the 'cool kids' preferred Piper.
I was listening to Beatles' songs way before Pink Floyd. But, I become an ardent follower of Pink Floyd, the greatest band in the world
what robot narrates these videos? lol
Paul McCartney already knew them. He went to watch The Pink Floyd play at the UFO Club many times in late 1966. See Steve Turner, Beatles ’66: The Revolutionary Year (2016).
I’m sure there were a lot more people disappointed by meeting waters than Lennon honestly
Indeed! I was thinking how disappointed Lennon must have been meeting waters but then realizing that he probably had no expectations to be met.
@@johnmcbarron7282 Leonard Nimoy met Roger Waters?
@@MarkMikelVideos Thank you auto correct
Despite Waters' reputation as a control freak and egotistical dick, I've heard nothing but good things from fans who've met him. I always hear he's courteous, patient and has a sense of humour. Look up the video of someone asking him to sign Pulse.
I'd say all of Roger's ex wives could be added to that list of people.
i bet Gilmour had a better interaction with the Beatles because, well Gilmour is a nice person.
Waters seems to have snide comments about a lot of people, envy is not a good trait in a person.
I imagine John was enthralled also... but more intent on extracting himself from his unforgiving fan.
I think Roger was disappointed when he met everyone lol
Other way round I think
@@realtruth4804 most likely true. I can't lie I think Roger might be a bit of a jerk .
Why make that public. No reason to tarnish anyone that isn’t here to defend themselves
