As a Beatles and Lennon fan from the UK, I have to just say what a great job Dick Cavett did here. I’ve seen a few of his interviews, and I hugely appreciate how much time and room he gave to his interviewees to express themselves. We could do with more like him honestly. 🙏
@thomdotexe Yeah, he had an inferiority complex, I'm convinced of it. He would do anything to try to put himself above his guests. Dick asking John Lennon if he was nervous, and asking right off the bat if John has any questions for him, this video is a perfect example of his inferiority complex. And when a confident black man came on the show, oh lord did Dick go to great lengths to try to put them beneath him. It was pathological.
@Pedro Guedes I'll agree that John laid the foundation for their greatness. He was older and more mature when The Beatles first started out, facilitating his assumption of a leader role. Paul didn't really catch up until John started dealing with Yoko in '66. My contention is that Paul infused the band with the creative spark which made them incomparable to any other band. He was the creative force behind their most illustrious years in 1966-1969.
I always like how the Dick Cavett show always seemed like casual conversations. No structure. Just whatever the guest wanted to talk about is where the interview would go.
Of course it was highly structured and directed. Don't be so naive. Cavett just made it look that way. Taking it where it's going is the art of thing, don't you know?
Please don't insinuate that Kimmel and Fallon are anywhere near Letterman's class. Cavett is excellent, but Letterman, given his preferences, would have been just as good or better in a long format show.
Today you are not even allowed to smoke cigarettes in prision. And on the prision black market, tobacco goes for more than pot. Because it's addicting.
Convinced John could have been a comedian, a painter/cartoonist or presenter - but songwriting chose him. He was so talented in nearly every single way. Truly great artist and human being.
john was wildly abusive and violent towards his wives and children. While he was a talented musician, I really don't think he deserves this kind of praise
@@sambogar1083 Maybe, maybe not? But I believe in forgiving people of their sins and focussing on the good they do. Even his ex-wife forgave him for hitting her once when they very young. He also addressed it in interviews and was repentant. In a poll of greatest ever britons he was voted 8th above Horatio Nelson who defeated Napoleon - so he did some good too.
@Sam Bogar his first wife said he only hit her once which still isn't good or anything, but hardly wildly abusive, he was a shitty husband tho to his first wife

yer it was kind of chilling to hear him talk about his own death and whether people will remember him. All while we're watching a video about him 50 years later
You are so right. I just started my teenage life when he passed. I didn't know to much about him. I was living in New York at the time of his assassination. I knew he was a part of the group The Beatles ,because that is what they said in the media. So I immediately knew then the group. Hearing the material on the radio. Some of which I didn't knew was them. I got so much into them when I traveled to Europe and began to reside there in the 80's. I discovered the Sgt.Peppers Album. Wow!--Anyway , he lives on . I learn more about him through these interviews because of RUclips. I never saw this interview when I was small. But, John would be needed in such crazy times. New York had him for awhile, so I'm happy about that he lived in a State where I grew up in America.
I wasn’t born yet but came across this and omg he is hysterical..love him. Was born shortly after and remember when he passed..was in the car with my dad and he was so upset. I think he is fantastic
Yoko is SO weird....she actually thinks she is an amazing artist, singer YUCK!!! And John is an amazing singer...yet she has manipulated his brain into her pathetic world so now he is also a pathetic fiilmaker...if you can call the junk they are making now!!!! And her voice is like scrathing chalk on a chalk board...so irriting...awful!😂😢😅😂😢😅
It's so interesting how, even after all John's fame and success, the first things that come out of his mouth are "I'm nervous". Even his body language shows he's nervous and still an insecure person. I love this because it reminds us how he's just a normal person. His fame never went to his head and he never acts like he's larger than life or above anyone. It lets us all be able to relate to him. For the most part, every one of the Beatles kept pretty level heads considering their legendary status.
John was the sarcastic beatle. He is bright and quick witted. I assume he got “some” humility by being with Yoko. I mean that in a good way. John and Paul’s self confidence played a big roll in dealing with the stresses of being a beatle. I think Yoko help bring him back to earth. I’m disappointed he put her in that situation. Hear, I wasn’t a fan of her. I just think John allowed the rumors to swirl. He should not of allowed her in the recording studio. Bad taste. It’s like he used her to reaffirm the break up needed to happen.
I was heartbroken. Just at that time on the Monday Night Football game national telecast, The New England Patriots' attempt to kick what would have been the winning field goal as regulation Time expired was blocked and the game went into overtime, where they lost on a field goal by Miami. I was a Rolling Stones fan. While Lennon was too cowardly to say he didn't believe Jesus was god, because it would have cost him $, The Rolling Stones were playing Sympathy For The Devil. Plus, how much of a huge, weak, hopeless heroin addict do you have to be to think it's a good idea to touch Yoko Ono, even with a stick?
After watching this I have realised that I would have loved to spend a day with John, not because he was famous and I’m a lifelong Beatles fan but because just as a person he would have been very interesting and great company from his stories to his unique views of the world around us. Aside from his musical talents he was a fascinating character. RIP John X
He was a raging heroinist and junkie. Likely schizofrenic on some degree. Manipulated people an relationships. He was unfaithful to Yoko with both men an women (possible that they had some weird arrangement to this as they were both severely immoral people). There were rumors that he was prone to violence and possibly even beat Yoko. But hey, great company
@@gabehcuod681 most of this is just trash talking and rumour, John seemed to me to be a very honest person in that all his flaws are on show for everyone to see. There’s no need for rumours cause it’s just so easy to see the truth!

This is an hour (of actual interview) that passes very quickly. John Lennon was a very thoughtful and articulate man. Yoko comes across as gentler and more pleasant than her reputation might suggest, and makes intelligent, pertinent contributions of her own.
With the exception of the "artistic qualities " of creating a film about how everyone has similar butts regardless of social status..? How strange the mind works...
Smoked Salmon To be honest, I still don’t love Yoko, but it was interesting to see her talk and engage during the interview. If I didn’t know who she was I would like her and find her quite nice.
@Jeffrey Epstein’s Rotten Corpse Nope, I've read just about every interview John gave. No mention ever of such a thing in anything I've read. Rather than ad hominem attacks, provide evidence for your claims.
I'm enjoying this interview. So nice to see John in this happy state ...(I guess some of it was because he was a little nervous) His mind was razor sharp, he knew a little bit about everything, and was quick to fire his intelligent opinion. Such a great artist! I love his songs!
Dick Cavett was by far America’s best chat show host. Didn’t keep coming out with endless wisecracks, inflating his own ego or butting in when his guests spoke. Just asked grown up questions and actually “listened” to what the guests had to say.
He said he didn’t care if he was forgotten in 47:10 and here i am, a 14 years old loving John Lennon with all her heart and thinking of him every day:)
And here's me a sixty one year old woman who 1st hear the BEATLES when her big brother left the radio on in the next room at night in rural South Dakota! Even through the wall in the frozen night, I could hear the magical connection🎶
I'm only 32 and I was never around for this show, but I have always been a Lennon fan, and the thing that strikes me watching this is that Dick is a great presenter and a great, respectful, interested host. Presenters in this day and age could learn a lot from him! Instead of making fun of their guests or trying to be snarky or shocking or squeezing for applause. Very nice change for me.
Chris S. i’m 43 and even i wasn’t around back then. this is a loooong time ago. and agreed, dick cavett was a great host. host these days should take some pointers from him. definitely 🙂
This is a very famous interview and from the look of it his style was more about having a relaxed conversation instead of a regular talk show interview, I saw the one he made to Alain Delon and it was quite similar. Conan O'Brien has a show on RUclips which has a similar vibe, it is called Serious Jibber-Jabber; although Conan can't help being himself of course.
John and Yoko obviously understood and respected one another as artists. Dick Cavett's show was the best. He was so great, so real, so attractive and such an amazing and graciouis host with the best guests. This show is pure gold, and I love their styles. Priceless.
Modern talk shows only have the guests speak for like 5 minutes - its really interesting to see a converstaino that is this long - wish john was still around, what a talent and a funny guy
John had a great sense of humor. Yes, there was sarcasm in it, but that's the way a lot of the British are and he was good at it. I found him very funny when he wanted to be. RIP, John.

John is 30 years old in this interview and so aware of the trilogy mind soul and body: He is light as a feather with an outstanding sense of humor and really witty. He wasn't there for the music only, he was here to deliver a message of peace and love. I feel it. What an amazing human being. That's exactly whats differentiate him from the rest, his message to humanity. Peace and Love.

@elvis316 -- Thank you so much for this Cavett show, which I saw that night, laid up in a hospital in Hanover, NH recovering from surgery, in 1971. I discovered Cavett in that place, and watched him five nights a week for the next six weeks, while they did their best to kill me, and eventually diagnose a bleeding disorder that was, oh, I hate to use this word but here goes, hitherto, unknown. Dick Cavett treated his guests as people first. Now it feels as though guests are treated as commodities. There's an earnestness here, warts and all with the awkward moments, that is absolutely captivating.
John is witty, but anxious and aggressive. Yoko is sweet, calm and occasionally, annoyingly quirky. Cavett is brilliant; sympathetic, but not hopelessly unhip, a good listener, occasionally amusing when he needs to be. And he actually brings both of them out. John was nervous and, in order to compensate, tries to wind Cavett up. When he slowly realises that Cavett won't play ball, he becomes more interesting and reveals more about himself. A wonderful interview. I wish we'd have something like that now. Parkinson was probably the last credible example. This tells you way more about John than any other interview or Beatle footage.

If ANY other celebrity came on a talk show and said "you must interview my wife/husband as well", it would seem completely bizarre. Somehow Yoko leeching off John's fame was accepted as normal.
They did a lot of things together. Double fantasy album cover, magazine shoots, interviews. Lennon spent a lot of time with The Beatles, and now a lot of time with his wife. Not leeching, just a very close relationship There was a lot of hate toward her, bringing her even more attention. She was a celebrity
I am awestruck at John Lennon - always was and always will be. Seeing Ringo and Paul reunite for the Beatles Grammy show commemorating the Beatles' 50th anniversary of landing in America, John was a noticeable absence - as Paul said, each Beatle was different but they were a "fit" - no one has been such a perfect fit since. The comment about John not caring about what happens when he's dead - I'm sure he does care. The world is falling apart - Imagine. RIP John - miss you madly.

It is August 2, 2020 at 9:50 am. I am 51 years old now. All my life I though John Lennon was a not so nice guy with horrible opinion on political views. THIS interview changed ALL OF THAT FOR ME!!! Hear, I see he is Actually a nice guy, some what sharp and very funny. Every time I have ever seen him in an interview, he was sharp to comment nasty remarks and that is why I thought he was not really a nice person. But after this interview, I see he was just getting annoyed with all the other interviewers and that is why he answered them with Sharp, Nasty remarks. Dick Cavett was a nice man to John and Yoko and they did not have to protect themselves. So this was an actually good interview. I see now, John was all ways being attacked in interviews so he naturally would get annoyed and attack back. I feel so BAD having such a bad 1st Impression of this man all my life. I wish I could change it. I can not. So I can only change the future.
@cripnipp At least you were open-minded to listen to this interview in the first place. Most people are so closed-minded these day would've been "Hell no!" and would've skipped it entirely.
Imagine Trump feels like that, being attacked for going on 3 plus years now. Not going political, just observing. John Lennon was one incredible talent, Yoko is a required taste, but who could ever imagine falling in love with the first ever boy band? Being blamed for the break up, than all the bulls#it from their immigration status, during this time the Nixon administration is starting to wiretap The Lennon's, following their movements and basically questioning their morals & loyalties to America. John had good reason to be sarcastic. Hope he understood GOD prior to being murdered, still love his work. GOD bless Yoko for all the work she has shared of John's, pray for their whole family. One way to the father is through Jesus, but sadly I don't know if John ever came to that before the end.
It’s sad to see how sad they get when Dick asks about the Beatles after listening to Yoko sing. I miss John. I remember exactly where I was and how devastated I was. I’m feeling the pain after all these years.
John was a Liverpool lad, and the one thing Liverpool folk are renowned for is their sharp sense of humour, look at Paul George and ringo, a perfect example
This was such a great interview. John was so nervous he was wrapped tight into a ball. Cavett was great at getting him to relax and a humorous and intelligent interview follows. The smoking begins and you’ve gotta love John’s British sense of humor. My husband is British and sarcastic af. So glad to find this here. Interviews today just don’t even come close. But then again, you don’t have John and chain smoking!
It always amazes me that American's who make such a big deal about their freedom of speech, get so upset by the those who may have a different opinion to theirs. No wonder American politics has become so divisive... and we see that hatred in nearly every other comment submitted on these pages by a friend of Uncle Sam.
I always got his humor, his conviction, and especially his loyalty he's a man that knows what he wants doesn't let anyone stand in his way and didn't care about what anyone thought because after all it's his life, and good thing considering he had no idea it would end so quickly or tragically, but then who among us does?
I can just imagine -pun intended- the sheer amount of mσrσηις crybabies calling him a rαςιst, mγsσgιηιsτ, xεησphσβε and/or whatever the fυςκ just because of that, and the japanese impersonations, if it happened nowadays...
30 years later, 9/11 would happen. If John were still alive and living in New York, he would've probably wrote a song in honor of that tragic day. I'm sure he would organize some events to help the people of New York; a concert would certainly have brought thousands of smiles back on people's faces😢.
John Lennon had his faults, like we all do, to different degrees. You don't need to like or dislike Yoko, you can clearly see they were completely in love, and that's something you and I don't need to understand. It was the love between themselves that made them not give a sod about what people thought of her. If you have ever been in love you would understand. Just because he was in the public light, he and she faced that criticism, but love is love. And it doesn't matter what we think. They were happy. She was weird to most people, but in an abstract way I get her, I just could only take so much of it, but that does not matter. What matters is John loved her with all his heart. Respect them for that. RIP John, you went too soon.
I could never see what John saw in Yoko but thank goodness he didn't just hook up with some brainless perfect model. I will give them that, they were a unique set. I don't get it, but I don't need to.
Stella A you mean because she’s Japanese? My husband was Chinese so no. I’m talking about her general weirdness and imo lack of any talent other than just B.S.
She does seem very weird to me, I never got it either but frankly there are a few people I know whom I can’t figure as couples. That’s life and I have no doubt that there are several (misguided) people who think that I’m a bit weird too 😃
This is where we really have to honor our talk show hosts and technology and RUclips and you the world. The ability to have access to these interviews are priceless. Similar to parietal art these testaments are a very personal yet communal gift.
1:05:00 such a sad and vulnerable moment. It was uncomfortable to hear at first but johns final comment about how the “house is waiting” for Kioko broke my heart
When you look at John in 1971 and 1972, he looked like a shy nerd the haircut, and the glasses you think "what a cool man", then you do some research, and see what kinda person, he actually was, he rather do drugs, with Yoko rather than being a father, Julian saw his father only on summers, when he had summer vacation, stayed 2 week's then he would, have to wait to the next summer, before seeing his father again, John bought 3 apartment's, in the dakota one of them was a gift, to Julian when he would turn 18, sadly John died before that opportunity arrived, he struggled with major depression, he most likely had schizophrenia, because of his personality, it could be a side effect, of all the alcohol and drugs, he almost died in 1974 from alcohol poisoning.
I agree. But partly: In the sense that not everybody is equally witty. But also, one has to consider that John has a relative advantage over Yoko on this interview: For his ability to play with language in general - and linguistic nuance in particular, the way that he does. He was a native English speaker. Yoko isn´t. Inasmuch as she may have studied and spoken English for years - regardless of whether she is Asian or European, it´s not easy for ESL speakers to reach metalinguistic awareness on par with native speakers! (The "extent of her engagement" in discourse on this interview, may well serve to illustrate this.) Yoko would perhaps come across as being "more articulate" - even if, not wittier - in an interview for NHK. For instance. Because her metalinguistic awareness would be in keeping with Japanese being her native language...
On the other hand, Yoko was a gold-digging, talent-poor dilettante and a harpy... which never helps. Read Tony Bramwell (boyhood friend and member of the Beatles' Inner Circle during Beatlemania's golden age) on all that.
I saw another Dick Cavett show on RUclips where guest George Harrison was told by Cavett that Yoko had sat in George’s chair last week. George jumped up out of the seat and stared at the seat as if it had the cooties! It was really funny. Then George said that he saw John recently at an event. Cavett asked him, “What did you say to him?” George grinningly replied “HI”
Fascinating interview. You can see the bond between John and Yoko. This is art . What wonderful creatives the both of them. Amazing footage from another time.

He was probably high :)
I think he was being sarcastic lol
John was the sarcastic beatle. He is bright and quick witted. I assume he got “some” humility by being with Yoko. I mean that in a good way. John and Paul’s self confidence played a big roll in dealing with the stresses of being a beatle. I think Yoko help bring him back to earth. I’m disappointed he put her in that situation. Hear, I wasn’t a fan of her. I just think John allowed the rumors to swirl. He should not of allowed her in the recording studio. Bad taste. It’s like he used her to reaffirm the break up needed to happen.

I always liked Dick Cavat, he is very good at making his guests comfortable first and warming up the interview to talk about very deep topics.

It always amazes me that American's who make such a big deal about their freedom of speech, get so upset by the those who may have a different opinion to theirs. No wonder American politics has become so divisive... and we see that hatred in nearly every other comment submitted on these pages by a friend of Uncle Sam.
In what way is he nervous you numpty?
That was really peaceful to watch. I was doing art and watching them at the same time. Thank you for sharing this! Peace everyone
I always got his humor, his conviction, and especially his loyalty he's a man that knows what he wants doesn't let anyone stand in his way and didn't care about what anyone thought because after all it's his life, and good thing considering he had no idea it would end so quickly or tragically, but then who among us does?
He knew
Lennon is so funny, his little joke about Yoko being from Hawaii haha. Rest in peace you F'ing LEGEND!
Great
I can just imagine -pun intended- the sheer amount of mσrσηις crybabies calling him a rαςιst, mγsσgιηιsτ, xεησphσβε and/or whatever the fυςκ just because of that, and the japanese impersonations, if it happened nowadays...
Sad when he says "when we're 50" ...
I know he died at 40, that is why it's sad he doesn't even know he won't make it to 50 :'(
Broke my heart so much😢😳😵😩
He was 31 here.
the man was one of a kind...such a loss.
Richard Moore they were getting a divorce before johns death
@@shayjaqueline seriously? where could i see more about it?
Yoko is also a hidden talent. I finally understood why John loved her so much.
Agree! I too, "get her" as well. A very gentle woman, misunderstood as well.
Cee Jay , yeah but look at dat face
Я уверена Джон обожал ее !
Это счвстье , что у них была настоящая любовь. Он защищал ее . Они сумели сохранить любовь .

I could never see what John saw in Yoko but thank goodness he didn't just hook up with some brainless perfect model. I will give them that, they were a unique set. I don't get it, but I don't need to.
Are you referring to her appearance ?
Stella A you mean because she’s Japanese? My husband was Chinese so no. I’m talking about her general weirdness and imo lack of any talent other than just B.S.
@@sawahtb oh, got it .
She does seem very weird to me, I never got it either but frankly there are a few people I know whom I can’t figure as couples. That’s life and I have no doubt that there are several (misguided) people who think that I’m a bit weird too 😃
Sarah H I wish more people were like you. So many fans project their thoughts onto Johns choices and end up hating Yoko
(6) 52 years later, "now and then" was born. ❤
This is where we really have to honor our talk show hosts and technology and RUclips and you the world.
The ability to have access to these interviews are priceless. Similar to parietal art these testaments are a very personal yet communal gift.
It looks so strange to see people smoking cigarettes while on a TV show lol. Nowadays you would get 100 callers phoning in to complain about it.
Ever see Dave Chappelle smoking wherever the fuck he wants? TV, interviews, live on stage
What does calling mean? 🤔
More like 10,000 tweets bitching on how cancerous smoking is
Those days was also allowed to smoke in the office, while you were working.
“I don’t want to be singing She Loves You when I’m 30”...Rolling Stones, “Hold my Jack Daniels”
Where he said this????

John Lennon shows to me he was away more than a super famous member of the Beatles. He is all around super artist in all dimensions.
Absolutely.
1:05:00 such a sad and vulnerable moment. It was uncomfortable to hear at first but johns final comment about how the “house is waiting” for Kioko broke my heart
I loved the way John said «our daughter» , it was so cute. John was really a great person.
I dont blame the father not wanting his daughter round John considering him and Yoko were both smackheads for a short period
@@AkyovNorthWest with their money and power they could have taken custody of her if she was ever in the house.
"All they are saying, is give peace a chance"❤
Genuine people. Not many in today's celebrity cannon
jonglb Mork I feel like you don't pay attention to modern artists at all.
It would be awesome if Forrest Gump was there instead of Yoko.
omc same hahaha
Lt Mojo Risin he was there they just edited yoko in his place
Lol
(The "extent of her engagement" in discourse on this interview, may well serve to illustrate this.)
Yoko would perhaps come across as being "more articulate" - even if, not wittier - in an interview for NHK.
Cavett asked him, “What did you say to him?” George grinningly replied “HI”
miss him, the world needs him now
Fascinating interview. You can see the bond between John and Yoko. This is art . What wonderful creatives the both of them. Amazing footage from another time.
Music would not be the same without him. To the Toppermost of the Poppermost, Johnny!
you're usually uuuuu umm 😳 uuuú III up uuuu up to it u
You can see the razor sharpness of Lennon's mind and wit in this interview. Man, he was a sharp individual.
