  • Lincoln University of Missouri is dealing with the death of its Vice President of Student Affairs, Dr. Antoinette Candia-Bailey, who died by suicide on January 8.
    Her death has people calling for the university's president, Dr. John Moseley, to resign. Friday, the Lincoln University Board of Curators announced Dr. Moseley volunteered to be placed on paid administrative leave while a third party reviews the school's personnel processes.
    According to those close to Dr. Bailey, she was subjected to a toxic work environment, enduring alleged bullying and harassment from President Moseley and other university officials. Despite her numerous attempts to seek support and address the issue, Dr. Bailey was allegedly left unsupported and disregarded.
    She penned a letter on the day she died detailing the bullying she faced after disclosing her mental illness to the university officials.
    Lincoln University National Alumni Association's President, Dr. Sherman Bonds, spoke with Roland Martin about this truly disturbing situation.

      Depression will trick you into believing that is the best way out. I had major depressive disorder with suicidal ideation for a decade. I had a ton of friends and family who I thought adored me beforehand that did not give a flying fk. Two people cared. My brother and stepfather. But with depression you need a support group! Truth is I didn’t die because I could not hurt my daughter. I couldn’t do it to her! I could not risk hurting her mental health anymore than my own depression affected her life. I am a good mother but I went from super mom to a good mom but she was still affected because our social life changed. She wasn’t around my family often like before so she wasn’t able to create close relationships with them. By the time I started to encourage her to do it alone, the damage was done. It is easy to tell someone nothing or no one is worth your life but the darkness can be so unbearable that you just want it to stop. Or some might feel why didn’t she just leave. Depression is like a cancer of your brain. It just doesn’t allow you to think in your best form. She tried to leave and be able to support herself financially at the same time. U are also made fun of to the point you don’t even want to tell people how u feel. People would rather you tell them a lie so they don’t have to put any effort in other than two words or some bs suggestions that they somehow think a smart person hasn’t thought of themselves. Luckily I had a child, and though I fantasized about dying and it was the first thing my mind attacked me with when i would awaken, I was not actively suicidal because I kept telling myself it is a side effect of depression n that I don’t want to die. I also believe one day God would bring me out of it. I learned how the brain worked and started to reprogram enough that I got rid of the suicidal thoughts. I hope this helps someone who I believe is not trying to be insensitive but Lacks emotional intelligence. So many of you do. Major depressive disorder is just a different beast. Trust me feeling empty and nothing is worst than feeling emotions. You feel like a dead person walking. Unfortunately that little light that kept a person going just goes out. And I feel confident enough to believe everyone she was close to cared but didn’t care enough!

      And you're part of that toxicity when you don't give a damn about them when they're struggling, then tell them how to feel when they reach out when they never asked you. Not saying I'm perfect either, I feed of some of the toxicity of humanity, but your "advice" is some of the most toxic ever because it's always after the fact. People like you might be the most significant reason for depressed people's chronic helplessness. You're so busy telling them how to feel and how to handle their pain based on how YOU handle YOURS, you don't want to listen and cut them off for struggling too long based on YOUR designated time line. You personally might be a better friend than most, so if that's the case, this applies more in a general manner. Too many people do this, especially when it comes to other people feeling this darkness to this point where they don't feel like they can talk to anybody because it's "toxic" to depend on or confide in others, on top of that, it's the job, so they must support themselves. You ignore the overloading that makes getting help almost impossible.
      Then there are the consequences of leaving job...and then leaving another...and leaving another...which makes you seem less dependable, which is what companies look for, and makes you unable to hire eventually. This is what I'm dealing with after leaving job after job that didn't treat me right, or maybe I wasn't a good fit for. Now after getting another degree and searching for better jobs than retail (which does the same kind of false-performance-workload-increase-punishment style bullying that Dr. Bailey suffered), all I hear is NO or hear nothing at all. People like you are not considerate and only fake such consideration. Please look within yourself and fix that shit, because your "advice" doesn't help anyone when you only give it when it's too late, after disconnecting and never caring or "not wanting to hear it because it brings too many negative vibes when you're all about good vibes" or whatever.

None of these insulated me from the brutality that is part of work and corporate culture. The lowest point in my career came when I had a corner office near the top floor of the seattle municipal tower and the title of director. I knew then that it wasn't worth it. It's never worth it. I’m truly saddened by this. I actually worked with Dr. Bonita Candia Bailey in Student Affairs at my Alma Alta, NCATSU and I TOO experience the same level of abuse, bullying, and disrespect from both students and administrators while serving as the Director of Student Activity. I recalled reaching out to the Chancellor for help and to state the obviously, it turned against me. As a result, I spiraled out of control with alcohol abuse and eventually suffered a nervous breakdown. Unfortunately what happened (untimely demise) to my former colleague and Soror raised awareness to the horrific cruelty that takes place at HBCUs and I’m sure at other colleges. You never know one’s mental state therefore the Board , administration AND students need to be oriented on this type of behavior to eliminate work face bullying and senseless deaths such as my Soror. This could have been me however I listened to my black primary physician and black therapist and walked away from a 20 year career at the university, my alma mater, and still harvest my Aggie Pride. This really hurts me to my core. Soror Bonita Candia Bailey’s voice speaks loudly today and forever more!!!! This has to STOP!

    May Dr. Bailey rest in heaven. As a Black woman, I've beem the victim of workplace harassment and bullying, and nearly took my life too. I was saved because of a coworker's concern for me and finding me before I was able to put a period at the end of my life in 2016.
    Nothing was done to the Deputy Director who tormented me. I was terminated after receiving mental health treatment. I still deal with workplace PTSD and continue seeing a therapist at present.
    This is serious and as a black woman, I'll say we are the most overworked, over educated, underpaid, the most put upon and the last to be thought about.
    Everyone take care of yourselves. May Dr. Bailey's family find peace someday.

    As a person who suffers from major depressive disorder, I would like for people to understand that in the depth of depression your thought process is not always clear and concise. Not to say that she did not suffer bullying on the job. But, take into consideration that she was suffering from an admitted mental illness. I have had a suicide attempt, and by God's grace, I survived. Looking back, my reasoning for attempting suicide was not clearly thought through, and I was blessed to be able to have the opportunity to 'look back'. So many others, such as this sister, do not have the opportunity to see the situation with a clear mentality. RIP my sister.

      Agreed. Her mental illness may have caused her to be a difficult person to work with. She did have two complaints filed against her by subordinates, and her disclosure of those confidential discussions was one of the reasons she was fired. Her letter to the president comes off as a rant. Regardless, it is probably unfair to lay her death at the feet of the president. Even if he was a bad boss, he wouldn't be the only bad boss out there. You quit and move on. Why she felt the need to grapple with him is beyond me.

The complete disregard of a capable and proven black educated woman, who was struggling with her mental health during employment in an obviously toxic work environment, is absolutely unacceptable. All for some ridiculous office politics and fear. This should never be tolerated. She obviously gave her life to and for her beloved alma mater because she loved it, the students and her life as an educator. It is illegal to use mental health against an employee. Additional emails reveal that when she made complaints about how she was treated to the Board of Curators, the board president wrote a response back to her saying in part, “Please be advised the Board of Curators does not engage in the management of personnel issues for Lincoln University and will not be taking further action related to this issue. I've dealt with bullying in the workplace and its extremely stressful. I had a manager he was only in the position for a year and he was able to destroy moral and completely destabilize a team that was high functioning before he got the position. Thankfully senior leadership in my organization listened to staff and reassigned that boss, he couldn't even have contact with us after that. We are still recovering from the staff turnover that resulted from his terrible leadership. I had to take on so much more work, I gained weight from the stress.
    I can see how someone with prior mental health issues might be pushed further into negative actions or coping strategies due to that. I think someone without mental health issues would quit, move on and find another job. I had one colleague that moved on and all of us would have done the same had the bully not been reassigned. I'm very sorry for her family.

      “You think you are too good to associate with us?” Employees at an insurance company where I worked said this to me and were so phony that I stopped going to after hours gatherings.

    This story makes me really really sad and I can totally relate. I, too, just walked away from a toxic environment. Workplace bullying is real and it is emotionally and physically draining when it comes from your direct report. Even worse, you are expected to endure being bullied, ignored, and disregarded in the workplace by those who have the power to address it, stop it, and discipline those who are doing it. In most cases, people will not speak up when they see you being harassed and mistreated. I have witnessed people shun me, turn and look the other way, or stop speaking to me altogether from fear of it happening to them or fear of losing their own jobs because of their association with me. When I finally walked away from the job for my own mental health, I felt 100% better. Typically, people will believe you did something wrong to deserve the bad treatment from a controlling boss. No worries, people will reap what they sow.

      This is a shame that this even happens in an educational institution where people are being taught to respect and embrace diversity with professionalism and understanding. For the president of an University to be involve and directly responsible for bullying of this magnitude is inexcusable. Her family should pursue legal action on her be half. The idea that her requests for FMLA and ADA accommodations were joked about and not honored is unfortunately familiar to me; as a former senior administrator to experienced this from an African American female supervisor. She had the support of her white direct supervisor and VP for student Affairs. It wasn't until I was terminated for refusing to sign "a last chance agreement" involving my federal right to use FLMA and ADA that I was fired. There many lies told and some of the same tactics were used that Dr. Bailey experienced. Karma is real and those that allowed this to happen to me were held responsible to a certain extent. Human Resources was restructured with a new administration; the HR representative assigned to my area, left the college; the EEOC officer was fired; FLMA and ADA was out sourced; my area was dissolved and the staff was reassigned to other departments, to remove them from under my former supervisor's division; my former supervisor's subordinates was reduced from 40+ to 4 clerical staff only; the VP, who allow the mishandling of my situation stepped down from the VP and took an academic advising position and subsequently retired. But, the damage was done, I had been fired for the first time ever; I lost my income, and senior administrator position in a higher education; my home, etc. Plus, one of my subordinates lost her job for not going along, with my supervisor's open bullying and making fun of me in meetings with my staff, etc. It was ugly and shameful. But, I had legal counsel, who advised me to not quit and let them fire me. It ended in a long drawn out legal problem that lasted five years. All of this was because I have a non visible physical illness and disability, which led to other major life changing factors in my life and someone wanting to get rid of me for not being "perfect" as they thought they were.
      Whether black or white, when people don't respect differences and insist in interfering in federal law that has been put in place to help people, who are sick whether physical, mental or both it's an indicator that they lack emotional intelligence and shouldn't hold certain positions in the workplace. In my case, I was not able to meet with the president to advise him that I was being targeted and harrassed for my use of FMLA and ADA certification. All of my requests and attempts to follow the chain of command in order to see the president were purposely being blocked, until the very last day of my employment. Unfortunately, there is toxicity, harrassment and discrimination everywhere. But, it's really shameful when it happens in academia, where our children are being educated and mentored. Be mindful that's it's not just a race thing; because we as African Americans especially females, CAN be our worst enemies, too.
      But, if you look at a the details it's usually really about the employee's effective leadership; professional work experience; personal bias, ealousy and insecurities; along with pure evilness; and their joyfulness in doing the dirty work of higher ranking administrators, who want keep their hands clean; etc. In my situation, I had an exceed expectations employment evaluations score and had collaborated with other directors at the college and developed a much needed student services initiative. I along with two colleagues received a bonus for our contribution to student services. The same colleagues, who are African American females outwardly defend me when I was targeted as a bad employee, who couldn't perform the duties of my position; and ineffective leader. However, my colleagues were told to basically "stand down." Once the legal investigation began by my attorneys the same colleagues, who were also friends were forced to disassociate themselves from permanently to keep their positions. That was a low blow that I'll never forget. One is now VP for Student Affairs at the same college. The other colleague evidentially left higher education for work in the public school system. However, there's still no contact on her part. So, lying and bullying me for having a medical condition that required me to adjust my work schedule; which was ADA certified and was suggested by EEOC via HR. but was rejected by my supervisor started a dirty campaign to get rid of me. Human Resources didn't stop the bullying and violation of my right to use FMLA and ADA; subsequently, followed what my supervisor, Dean and VP wanted which was to violated federal law and support the lie that did not perform my duties. Although, I never fail to exceed expectations from day one. So, if HR had stepped up and done their jobs this would've ended differently. The HR director did not disagree with a dean and VP which gives rise to the fact that HR's leadership and practices were ineffective and incompetent. This happened under a fairly new president's watch. I must say the major changes and restructuring that followed didn't help me. Perhaps, no one else will experience the toxic and hostile work environment, that I did for the same reasons nor same key people. However, the damage was done as far as I was concerned.
      My thoughts and prayers are with Dr, Bailey's family and friends. May she rest in peace.

All those employee books and papers you get when hired. KEEP THEM LEARN THEM. No matter how nice and smiling they are, email every thing and throw away NOTHING! Learn what their rules are and make them play by their OWN RULES. All these jobs have these bogus " visions" you know "we show respect, intergrity, Yada Yada Yada we know them and the thing is sooner or later...THEY break every one of them. But you learn them and then use them against THEM. Works for me. They either learn to leave me alone and let me do my job or You WILL pay unemployment. ON MY TERMS

    Micro management kills an office. I had a workplace bully who would give me an assignment, gave me the freedom to do as I wished as long as I came to final conclusion. I would complete the assignment and would be asked why I did it the way I did and so many other ex. but I finally had a manager who saw what this supervisor was doing and called her out. This saved me, I switched positions to get out from under her directly and we would meet with the manager together so there was no bullying and no misunderstanding between us. Really, I was excelling in my position even though the supervisor turned everyone else against me with gossip and by demeaning me in front of others. I wasn’t perfect but I did my job to the best of my ability. A few months later the supervisor got her dream job she lost it within months because the real person could not control the new office like she did at the office we worked together in. I would say This woman was micro managed and usually it is by an insecure person. I do hope they find that her boss is guilty of micromanaging to stop him from doing that to someone else.

      I don’t disagree with you but where are the righteous men at? Finding a righteous man who actual follows God is like searching for a needle in a haystack.

    • @markhorn7078
      @markhorn7078 5 месяцев назад +1

      @@MutedMinimalist well, it depends on what you call righteous and what the Bible calls righteous. No person is declared righteous before God. When we accept the sacrifice of His Son and receive Him as our Savior, we're imputed with His righteousness as a gift.
      However, there are many scriptures describing what a righteous person does. So you can find a righteous man, the question is, where are you looking and who's vetting the man.
      Women pick the man THEY want and don't go to their fathers or uncles before they give their bodies and souls to that union. So even if the man was potentially righteous, they poison the potential for emotional gratification.
      Now, the Bible did ask a question about finding a good woman. Proverbs 31:10 "Who can find a virtuous woman? For her price is far above rubies." Virtuous women stand out from the crowd. Titus 2 says that older women (of character) are to teach the younger women how to love their children and HUSBANDS. Did you know that?
      So when a man, (a predator/hunter) by nature, sees a weakness in the character (upbringing) of a woman, he will possibly exploit that if He's not obeying God. The job of the father or other respected men is to vet the man to see if he is godly.
      Now, in light of these biblical parameters, did God not create righteous men, or is it the bypassing of God's order that's attracting hunters to exploit women who bypass God's order?
      Study the story of Boaz and Ruth. She worked in a field full of men, but none approached her because she was a righteous woman. Boaz noticed her character and that she wasn't there trying to catch a man, but honoring her mother-in-law.
      Her mother-in-law taught her how to approach this righteous man, and when she did in submissiveness, he covered her... because he'd seen her character. Find out what's in your character that's attracting dishonorable men.

    • @MutedMinimalist
      @MutedMinimalist 5 месяцев назад +1

      @@markhorn7078 It’s very bold to assume that someone who agreed with what you said attracts bad men due to bad character. The truth is that no men approach because of my character and high moral standards. Which I why I proposed where are the righteous men? I know I am not alone as I see too many righteous women doing what God requires of them but not enough men doing the same.

    • @markhorn7078
      @markhorn7078 5 месяцев назад +1

      @@MutedMinimalist when you become your own lawyer, you have a fool for a client. That's an old saying, but true and applicable to all til this day. Your assessment of what you say you are may be valid, and it may be true, but if the results don't bear out what you're saying you are, there's a flaw in the equation.
      I don't know you, I just know the Bible. God promises things to those who obey His order and other things to those who don't. So either God lied or you're missing something in your character with God in your heart and walk.
      The best case is that you're waiting for the right man that God will send, and the other is that you're in rebellion in some area that He won't allow you to get the promise until it's addressed.
      Only you know. For instance, your standards may be high, but your projected attitude may be off-putting. Look how you responded to me in offense for giving you my limited biblical analysis. It didn't come across as feminine, in my opinion.
      I, too, have seen many women who fit the description of a godly woman, but they had issues of unforgiveness, bitterness, and lived by fear.
      When men get past the meeting phase, they're in immediate analysis and liability assessment mode. Every idle word and act is being ingested to see if the woman aligns with his world and spiritual view. Any issues with respect or presence of a father is 2nd on the list behind your faith if he's a godly man. Then comes other things like hopefulness, joy, etc.
      What I said to you want bold. It was Bible. I have no opinions like you, I only shared the Bible's diagnosis for the issue. It's the same thing I would share with any of my daughters. By the way, many men of God have been shocked that the godly woman they found in the church divorced them after vowing not to. The church's divorce rate is the same as the world, and it's still 80% of the "self declared godly" women who file.
      This must be considered when you're formulating your standards because the chilling effect of this has made men reluctant to marry if they have any value. This has shrank the available pool for you. You might have to reorganize your standards.
      I would that you would receive the husband that you desire. Understand that something is preventing this, and it includes preservation of that man because God holds those who truly believe in Him to a higher standard. If there's any pride, it needs to be addressed.
      I gave you a biblical example and other points that you didn't address. You came after the messenger instead of considering the message from a stranger God is using to share something with no gain for me.
      I addressed male vetting because the truth is that if the Bible is correct, and God intends for His daughters to be covered in covenant, you've probably already had that husband in your life and missed him. Are your 'standards' God's standards? Is your heart submitted to Him in every area, including the order of marriage with your husband as your head? Or are you harboring resistance to what God ordained and don't realize it's keeping you from His promise? God didn't lie.
      Man lies to himself all the time. That's a universal truth for us all, and that's why He promises safety in a multitude of COUNSELORS. Lastly, the Bible says that a person who would have friends must show himself friendly.
      If no men are approaching, it's not because of your standards. They don't see them yet. Are you inviting? Is your appearance feminine and warm, or do you have a force field up?
      Men either sense your holiness or assume that you're beyond their reach. Ruth approached Boaz first to let him know she was interested. That's when he let his intentions be known. I hope you can see the effort to try and explain comes from the heart of a man who wants all women of God to prosper. Modern ideologies have invaded the church, and it has alienated us all.

      All during the height of the OJ Simpson trial an employee would come into the office and tell OJ Jokes.
      When we had an employee feedback meeting, I spoke up saying that I felt the jokes were offensive. A WF spoke up and said; “I think his problem is that he’s just sensitive!” I IMMEDIATELY replied; “it’s not a matter of being sensitive. Suppose when Bob Barker was going through his Price Is Right Scandal I had come in the office and said; ‘Hey what does everyone think of 70 year old Bob Barker making 40 year old Price Is Right models give him head;’ how would you white employees feel about that?”
      Do you know ALL the white employees gasped at what I said? I once again IMMEDIATELY said; “And that’s my point! You are upset by what I said, just as I felt the OJ jokes being told were just as offensive!”
      The manager abruptly ended the meeting, went to the Division Chief (a WM married and sexual harasser of men in the office - you read that correct) and she told him I tried to cause a “disturbance” in the meeting by talking about oral sex!
      Within a year of that, the white employees banded together and insisted I be reassigned, which happened within a year.
