Byron Allen-snatched up “the Grio”( I thought) But they do seem to have a different “flavor” - & seem to have just as many ( or more) “main stream” shows on there! This was an amazing segment. I’m 35 years old and grew up on BET. By the time I was in college and graduate school I became enthralled with the black sector of reality television. I don’t watch nearly as much now and would actually prefer more of a balance. The anti intellectualism within our community and society as a whole is baffling. I just want BALANCE.

@@andrealawhorn2549 I download free apps for local news stations on my phone - with the smart technology provided on these devices, I can then cast it to my television- local public access television can be access through the internet, and many TVs that are sold today comes with some kind of television programming with options to download apps like Netflix, Prime, RUclips, Apple, Sports channels, etc., The options are endless. I find the programs to even be better than what cable provides, plus you're only paying for internet service. One last thing, when you purchase a television, look on the box to see which apps can be downloaded. Hope this helps!
I got rid of cable too in 2019 and I'm so glad I did!! The cable companies are nothing but theives. I already had smart TV's but wasn't really using them the way they should've been. I just learned from friends to get the highest speed of wifi that I could and then we all started sharing apps. I have some I pay for, Apple TV & Sling, but others I get from my friends. If I see that I'm not using an app, I just cancel or pause it so I'm not wasting my money. I'm saving about $230 a month by streaming vs how much my Comcast cable bill was! I wish I had cut the cable cord sooner!!

Yep,100%. Only time I've watched cable in years (have people in the house that want it), was when I was in the hospital for 2 days last week. I've been getting Hella educated on black history over the past few months among my other VARIOUS interests. A lot of black centric News like Roland Martin, Dr Richey, and Phillip Scott, along with different viewpoints on different, mostly black, issues that are discussed by tik tokers that RUclipsrs grab together into compilations.

Cable made the huge mistake of not allowing people to choose their cable package with a basic channel package and a la carte channels. Also, the reruns and constant rate hikes and billing issues were just TOO MUCH of ridiculousness. I cut the cord a very, VERY long time ago because of those things and have NEVER regretted it!!!💯 Thank you for the education and information Roland.
I haven’t had cable since 2013. I was going to get basic cable for my mom since she moved in with me. They want $60/mo for a bunch of shopping channels, B movie, old westerns, and church channels. I got her a fire stick instead now she has more channels than she can watch.
Our cable bill including internet with Xfinity was $153 in 2019... now? It's $268 minus $30 cuz we qualified for a program for poor people. We're in the middle of cutting the cord right now.
This directly correlates with ESPN letting go of so much on-air talent this Summer as well. Linear television is a sinking ship that's clamoring for relevance in a digital world. Kudos to Roland for being at the forefront of new-media. Really inspiring.

This is one of the best segments that I have watched on your show, fully listened to, and really sought to ingest. You have convinced me of the importance of supporting you financially, not that I didn’t get it before but coupled with understanding the nature of changing times regarding digital content as you explained I now see it as a duty. I remember 20 years ago the conversation in the cable industry was about how the landscape was moving toward a la carte. Customers no longer wanted to burdened with paying exorbitant fees for a bunch of channels they never watched. They wanted to pick and choose. Streaming allows customers to do just that. Bob knew to get out the game while the getting was good. He got his $3billion and Paramount ain't getting that amount for it now. LOL
43:55 I was just saying this very thing to my husband last night. SM has this way of force feeding us nonsense even when we keep telling it not to recommend certain things. They are becoming the #1 place to get your news so they now have a major responsibility to make sure to promote more creditable stuff. I haven't watched BET since high school. It's been trash since the 2000s. Black movies and shows are always about the same old thing, no mystery, no thrillers, or horror, just crime, s**, and drama. I hate that it is that way. It's like we haven't learned to think or imagine anything outside our own experience.
Crime isn't "our" experience. It is however what media would have you believe. That image didn't come about until the 1970's as a way to dirty the black public image after the Civil rights victories. Before that the image was either a domestic servant or harmless waiter, field hand or doorman.

Like so many others, I shedded Cable years ago and the only reason it's in my home now is because my Condominiums association purchased a deal for the owners. Many older viewers are not savvy enough to switch to Streaming so they will keep a pulse beating for some cable companies for awhile. I'm also a senior however, I am also techno astute. 25:00 re: BET, I think it's different when a black owned MEDIA company is sold to white people because of the fight we have experienced all along of being positively portrayed in the media. One of the first things that happened when BET stopped being black owned was that they cancelled all the news shows. And the new programming I come across on there (not counting reruns of sitcoms) doesn't necessarily have positive black characters, and that includes the Tyler Perry dramas.

Yeah, Netflix, Hulu, prime video, all the streaming services I have been big disruptors for cable. A lot of businesses are now about to be disrupted even more things to AI artificial intelligence. So if you invest in the stock market before you buy that stock do you research how that business can be potentially downgraded due to this new opensource technology.

I don’t watch Roland nearly as much as I did when he was on the TV screen but because I trust his work, I do support by donating to this channel. The subscription comes out of my account each month. I do want to make a difference, and I want to see Roland and many more rise all the way to the top. I appreciate the breakdown of this pseudo network sale of BET & the economics of the business in general. However, it is easy to get caught up into what circulates in the social media landscape just because there is so much to absorb. I have heard and even accepted that false story as truth; not because I’m lazy but because #1, my job is not in journalism for me to want to do extensive vetting research and #2, I believed that some of these sources were credible and that they had done their due diligence to report the truth. Finally, my household is dropping the $316/mo Cable/Internet service on Monday because as watchers of no more than approx 10 channels, we have been giving away too much money for too many years. I was worried about buffering while streaming but w/the high speed wifi its not been an issue.
Our cable bill including internet with Xfinity was $153 in 2019... now? It's $268 minus $30 cuz we qualified for a program for poor people. We're in the middle of cutting the cord right now.

This is one of the best segments that I have watched on your show, fully listened to, and really sought to ingest. I remember 20 years ago the conversation in the cable industry was about how the landscape was moving toward a la carte. Customers no longer wanted to burdened with paying exorbitant fees for a bunch of channels they never watched. They wanted to pick and choose. Streaming allows customers to do just that. Bob knew to get out the game while the getting was good. He got his $3billion and Paramount ain't getting that amount for it now. LOL

I haven't watched BET since high school. It's been trash since the 2000s. Black movies and shows are always about the same old thing, no mystery, no thrillers, or horror, just crime, s**, and drama. I hate that it is that way. It's like we haven't learned to think or imagine anything outside our own experience.
Crime isn't "our" experience. It is however what media would have you believe. That image didn't come about until the 1970's as a way to dirty the black public image after the Civil rights victories. Before that the image was either a domestic servant or harmless waiter, field hand or doorman.

Like so many others, I shedded Cable years ago and the only reason it's in my home now is because my Condominiums association purchased a deal for the owners. Many older viewers are not savvy enough to switch to Streaming so they will keep a pulse beating for some cable companies for awhile. I'm also a senior however, I am also techno astute. 25:00 re: BET, I think it's different when a black owned MEDIA company is sold to white people because of the fight we have experienced all along of being positively portrayed in the media. One of the first things that happened when BET stopped being black owned was that they cancelled all the news shows. And the new programming I come across on there (not counting reruns of sitcoms) doesn't necessarily have positive black characters, and that includes the Tyler Perry dramas.

I rarely comment on social media but I feel inclined to respond to Roland’s commentary regarding support. I don’t watch Roland nearly as much as I did when he was on the TV screen but because I trust his work, I do support by donating to this channel. The subscription comes out of my account each month. I do want to make a difference, and I want to see Roland and many more rise all the way to the top. I appreciate the breakdown of this pseudo network sale of BET & the economics of the business in general. However, it is easy to get caught up into what circulates in the social media landscape just because there is so much to absorb. I have heard and even accepted that false story as truth; not because I’m lazy but because #1, my job is not in journalism for me to want to do extensive vetting research and #2, I believed that some of these sources were credible and that they had done their due diligence to report the truth. Finally, my household is dropping the $316/mo Cable/Internet service on Monday because as watchers of no more than approx 10 channels, we have been giving away too much money for too many years.
