- Nobody knows what got underneath Mike Love's skin when the Beach Boys were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988. It was only the third ceremony and they were getting in alongside the Beatles and Bob Dylan, so he could hardly feel his group was somehow getting dissed. But when he took to the podium, out came the most notorious speech in Hall of Fame history.
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees in 1988 were The Beach Boys, The Beatles, The Drifters, Bob Dylan, and The Supremes. At the time, inductees Paul McCartney and Diana Ross were involved in major lawsuits involving their former groups, and they, among others, were targets of Mr. Love's address that evening. At the conclusion of his verbal attacks, Bob Dylan was quoted as saying "I'm glad he didn't mention my name in that speech."

Mike Love never understood that if he were just the chill beach boy's singer rather than the uptight, ego-maniac beach boy's singer, people would automatically give him all the adoration he so desperately wants. People would say nice things like, "Mike Love: he didn't play an instrument but he had an iconic voice that went really well with the other guys' voices in the group--and he even co-wrote a few of those great songs believe it or not..." Instead we just roll our eyes whenever he brings up his contributions. Sad when people do that to themselves.

It broke my heart to see Brian stumble after Mike completely embarrassed him like that.
You probably do not know the background of what was going on. The band was managed by Brian's father who froze Mike Love out even though he wrote some of their biggest songs. Mike never got the credit for those songs for years and lost out on lots of money that others got.
It is easy for us to think that what we see on stage or in public is everything.

He mostly wrote tid bits to those songs, songs that were mostly already completed like 'Wouldn't It Be Nice', then claims co-writer credit because of how corporate & copyright law works in the US.

Brian is a fantastic talent but that does not negate the fact Mike was instrumental in some of their biggest hits including writing the songs.
Beach Boys are not an instrumental band so that has no bearing. They are all about the writing and singing of the songs.
You can pretend that Mike was not involved in writing songs all you want but the matter has already been settled.
Fun fact: the base of Mike Loves hat was surgically attached in 1973. He can change out the crown with different designs depending on his outfit.

It's obvious that the Beach Boys are humbled and proud of this award. Until Mike Love ruins the occasion. The other Beach Boys must have been mortified by his antics.
What you do not know is that Mike has an axe to grind with the others over the way he was treated during the song writing credits.
These things are never as clear as people make them out to be. SO do not assume who is humble and who is not as we do not know.

One facet of Brian's genius is that he could use almost anything and make it sound musical. Bicycle bells, water bottles, a bass harmonica, sleigh bells, an orange juice jug, the electro-theremin, and more. He could even make Mike Love's flat, nasal voice sound good.

wow the balls and pettiness of Love is astounding. he really has a massive chip on his shoulder. I think his friend Ali's 'I'm not the greatest, I'm the double greatest, I'm the boldest, the prettiest, the most superior' attitude has rubbed off on him, despite the fact he's not even half as good as Brian or any of the ppl he makes the subject of his derision.
Difference is Ali could back up his mouth and Mike never could.
The man literally interrupts a beautiful speech by Brian and hijacks the rest of the induction, never letting the rest of the band speak up. It’s painful yet hilarious to watch him ruin the night for everyone else.
Best part is how they all clearly walked off stage before he got to say his piece. The only explanation is that they knew what he was going to say and wanted no association with it

Mike was shafted by the Wilson's father who was the manager. There was even court cases over it.
Mike was not included in the songs writing credits and lost out on money.
None of the band I think stood up for Mike during that period during the 1960s and I think it must have really made him angry.
There is a lot of stuff in the background that none of us know that went down. There is another musician who played with the band that sides with Mike Love.
Brian was making such a wonderful speech, too!
Mike’s speech should have been:
“Thank you Brian for letting me be in your band even though I have no real talent. Otherwise I was on the fast track to pumping gas. Also, sorry I was too dumb to understand what you were doing with Smile.”
You are aware Love sang most of their songs and wrote most of their early music ... just saying.
@Billy Billcatsavick Brian and Dennis both had serious mental health issues, associated with some very bad people and caused a lot of problems within the band. Including sleeping with Love's wife. To note, Love also won a lawsuit showing he was not properly credited for upwards of 35+ songs. He is the custodian of the Beach Boys. If you look at the history, it was never Love causing the drama or hurting his fellow band mates. The Wilson brothers were horribly behaved and it took its toll. That and Love and Wilson also saw different futures for the band. For ANYONE to say Love has no talent or in the wrong is just plain ignorant of the facts and probably motivated by political biases as well.

Imagine taking a mic to interrupt the man who wrote pet sounds. Where would Mike be without Brian? Where would The Beach Boys be if Brian wasn’t experimenting? The non-experimental stuff was great, but to be remembered you need to innovate.
So many great bands forgotten, but Brian’s songwriting gave The Beach Boys longevity. It takes something different and new to be remembered. You can’t just be great in a genre you’ve stepped into to be remembered. You gotta fight the boundaries of genre.
Brian didn’t just create the rules of surf rock. He broke those surf rock rules. And then he broke the overall pop rules. And then he broke the music rules. Of course Pet Sounds and Smile wouldn’t be understood at the time. They were too fresh.
It feels condescending to use the word “bullying” with adults. But grabbing the mic and yelling out random bullshit feels like bullying when Brian doesn’t want to confront Mike and defend himself. Brian’s had a hard fucking life, leave him alone.
And why talk about harmony among man and then diss Mick Jagger?

@V Carl Wilson held the Beach Boys together as a successful touring band for 32 of the 33 years between early 1965 (when Brian announced he was going to stop touring) and February of 1998 (Carl's death) . And what happened after Carl died? The band fell apart very quickly.
Only years later did Mike Love hear about the immortality of video tape.

I have loved the beach Boys from the first time I heard them - I have been saddened by their often seen dysfunction, but they are human beings so like most of us, they have had their issues. Without question, Carl was my favourite and still is - I liked Dennis as well and didn't mind Al Jardine - I thought Bruce Johnston added a great deal of gentleness, talent and apparent sense - of course, how could anyone not recognise Brian Wilson's extraordinary genius, and it is a massive loss to us all that we will never see or hear what he would have achieved had he stayed on track, but I was never really able to warm to Mike Love - perhaps it wasn't until now, having seen this video, that I understood why - what a tosser - let's face it, a classic example of a person with nothing sensible to say and no great capacity to even articulate whatever it is that he thinks he is trying to convey. If he wasn't famous, he wouldn't be listened to by a homeless person hoping for a feed.

I had the privilege of seeing the Beach Boys live in Bournemouth in the UK in 1991. Other than Dennis it was the original line up. Brian even came on and did the couple of numbers. They were magnificent. Well, magnificent if you excuse Mike Love. Whatever he does just makes me cringe, and he looks like the creepy uncle you'd never leave your kids with.

He wrote "Goodnight, oh baby, sleep tight, oh baby" verse, that you can hear at the end of the song. And "Only With You" from Holland album, which he "co-wrote" with Dennis. He only wrote the hook at the end "All I wanna do, is spend my life with you". And after that, he calls himself a "major songwriter".

Yes, he sounds absolutely out of his mind like a babbling drunk. I've heard him speak so many times where he sounds very rational and 'normal' and level headed. Here he is totally insane -- must be dead drunk etc..
