Just gotta say it. Carl Wilson was always very good looking, but in the early-to-mid 1980s he was Greek god-like handsome. Life with Gina Martin must have really agreed with him.
IT was a well done Alto solo, Although it might have been overdubbed. However prior to this demonstration I had not seen Mike display such extraordinary technique on his woodwinds. So I'm just a little bit suspicious of him.

As a lifetime fan from the beginning-----------Fall of '62--------------This version of " California Dreamin" , is in my All-time Top 5 by The Boys. That Rickenbacker 370 12-string , by Roger McGuinn, is huge. Vocals arranged by Carl Wilson & Bruce Johnston, instruments & over-all production, by Terry Melcher. ---------It's just classic .------------------------------MJL< 74 y/o

#1 credit for this fantastic version of the John & Michelle Phillips classic, goes to the Late Terry Melcher. It was his idea to get Roger McGuinn & his 370 Rickenbacker 12 string ------and, his idea for that fantastic sax bridge, which I still believe had to be Steve Douglas, from The Wrecking Crew. Vocals were arranged by Carl & Bruce, resulting in a rocked-up Beach Boys version of a song that came so naturally to them, it is almost as if BW & Mike Love could have written it. ---------------MJL, 75 y/o

This '86 version of the '65 /'66 classic, is one of my all-time Top 5 by The Beach Boys, & I say this as a fan from1962. Roger McGuinn's fantastic guitar, his Rickenbacker 370 12 string, & the " Jingle-Jangle" sound, added with Steve Douglas from the legendary " Wrecking Crew" , & his Tenor Sax, make what IS a Beach Boys song by itself, into a classic remake, one to surely challenge The Mamas & The Papas original version. The harmonies , with Al & Carl taking leads, and Bruce hitting the high notes perfectly, make this song another BB's classic for all-time. I'm hard pressed to name a better remake, & both John & Michelle Phillips agreed. Terry Melcher gets all the credit, for getting both McGuinn & Douglas , as he produced the song. Notably, BW had NOTHING AT ALL, to do with making this ; perhaps that helps explain his obvious discomfort & lack of interest in this appearance on " Solid Gold ". plainly, he's out of place & he knows it. That's all due to Eugene Landy, who insisted on being credited as co-producer, & demanding royalties for BW's participation. Melcher told him to take a hike, so Brian was left out of the recording. --------------MJL, 76 y/o

I usually don't like covers of classic songs, but this one is so tastefully done. And yes, we need to give Charles Lloyd credit for Mike Love's sax solo. Charles must not have been available that day for the videotaping.
No, Mike usually faked the sax solos on videos around this time. Kokomo and Problem Child for instance. John Phillips faked the solo in the Ca Dreamin' video.
Great to hear that it was Charles Lloyd! Crazy that no one knows who played the instruments on the original recording! Other that Roger McGuinn of The Byrds on 12 string guitar!
It almost hurts to see the amount of talent on that stage! Thank you for taking such wonderful shots and making it clearer than so many live stage performances.

Absolutely brilliant ❤❤
Al is sooo underrated
I agree. And when they all do harmony I can't tell which voice is his, so I'm glad to know he did some of the lead vox on this track.
Jardine rules!
Superbe
Currently, Alan and Matt.

I was being facetious about Mr. Lloyd not being available that day.
Matt S .... John Phillips was aPIG.
@@andreamurphy1126 oink, oink
Great to hear that it was Charles Lloyd! Crazy that no one knows who played the instruments on the original recording! Other that Roger McGuinn of The Byrds on 12 string guitar!
Mike Love not even trying to move his fingers in a convincing way
None of them are convincing ^^
Like Brian does with the bass!
And he still doesn't when he "play" bass at the end of his shows! But for Brian, noboddy complains...
Relax bro. I'd like to see you do better as a 108 year old
This was 1986, they were in their 40's. I'm sure they have played it live many times.
Mike love is a fucking tool.
Mike Love nailing it on the sax…
yes, playing air-sax
The Beach Boys are professionals through and through.
They all looked very good here!
Elora , Thank you for this version,it is great. I have never seen it before.
Al singing lead, Carl and Brian is the Bonus..
Adrian Baker and Bruce Johnston arranged the harmonies on the Beach Boys Version of California Dreaming.
It almost hurts to see the amount of talent on that stage! Thank you for taking such wonderful shots and making it clearer than so many live stage performances.
Mike's sax skills really improved since Shut Down :D
Also, that brand of saxophone Mike is playing is Little Tikes. My child has that same brand.
Mike is not really playing with anything but himself.
@@kako1023 Unless it's a tambourine, which I hope he's mastered by now 🤣🤣
@@cthewave9955 NO, ML surfs off Brian's Back , that was his ticket.
@@kako1023 Well...as per "An American Family," ML did surf 🥱
Now there are 2 Classic versions of this Legendary Classic Song
Back up musicians? Front left Jeff Foskett, front right Billy Hinsche, on drums Bobby Figeuroa, Ron Altbach right rear on keyboards, percussion Mike Kowalski, long time touring member since late 60's Ed Carter between Ron & Bobby behind Brian.
Mike Meros on Keyboards, not Ron Altbach.
The definition of harmony, in Websters (should) says see "The Beach Boys".
No question about it-------------after Dennis died, & Carl went solo x 2 years, when he returned, he was by far THE HANDSOME --------& magnetic member of the Boys. ------------Always carried himself with class.----------------------Wolfsky9
Hands-down, from the 70's, & through the 80's THIS IS MY FAVORITE SONG BY THE BOYS. ------------Should have been a monster hit. ---------------Roger McGuinn on his Rickenbacker 370-12 -------------Carl is playing his 360-12-------------------WolfSky9
have to agree. All time favourite song - at 66 - best version of an immortal song that captures the spirit for us who were there.
bradman1100 .... So Very True... I was only 26 !
ABSOLUTELY agree - 1000 percent !
The embodiment of vocal perfection.
Man, I love The Beach Boys, but clips like this make me understand why many are glad the Beatles broke up in 1970.
I would have really enjoyed it more listening to them playing & singing live vs a recording.

Had to watch this again and again, I think I like it more than their own songs
Wow! I thought the Mommas and Pappas were gold on this song but the boys actually rocked it better!
no
Helyes they did
This was lip synced
@@lastfewtokes of course it is. But it doesn’t take away from the fact that they made it sound awesome. Having the mama and papas singing blends it great with old and new sound
awesome vocals
ruclips.net/video/EOFnrB9Sv-I/видео.html
I like this version of the song better than the Mamas and the Papa's. I sed to come home around midnight after doing afternoon shift, l'd put on my Beach Boys made in U.S.A. tape, crank it up and sing along in the shower. Great way to get rid of stress. I used to be able to hit most of the high notes, but l was alot younger and didn't have asthma.
ruclips.net/video/EOFnrB9Sv-I/видео.html
Carl, had to have had the best all around voice in rock and roll. Too bad the smokes got him.
I Love it!... And for those who never knew...Mike has always..played the sax... NO band..can top their sound.. Period!
ruclips.net/video/EOFnrB9Sv-I/видео.html
Mikey is so good, he can play different notes,
without moving his fingers. Mikey "Love." the
Milli Vanilli of the Beach Boys. (Wait, since he
as sued all 3 Wilson boys, for the Band's name,
Mikey Love now owns the Beach Boys tribute
band.) Yes, my lifetime favorite band, is owned
by Hateful Mikey!
Just glad that The Brian Wilson Band has a show,
here in Phoenix this summer. 7 June 2022, in
Phoenix. Yes I do have tickets.

@@steveskouson9620 Funny...how Brian still does gigs with him at times.. I think they ALL get along much better than the 'Mike haters'...think.
The concert was everything it was billed
to be. Brian's band left me breathless.
2 things off my bucket list. Chicago was
just as good!
steve
@@steveskouson9620 To be fair, Al is completely playing in a different key on guitar here. If he was actually playing, he’d be a fourth below the band (key of C, whereas the song is in E).
