Part 2 of our canal towpath series sees us walk from City Road to Camden, spotting things along the way, including a floating bookshop and an old ice store.
Great video. I have lived in London most of my life and never knew about the green steps in Granary Square or the 'Word on the Water' floating bookshop. I will have to go and look at both as soon as I can.
Visiting Camden, and sitting on the canal path opposite the TV-am studios, is always on the list for this TV continuity/presentation fan when he visits London. Thank you for including it :)
Walked the part between Islington Canal Tunnel and Camden Lock a few weeks ago which was a lot of fun. I might take a shot at walking other parts of the canal in the future. Interesting part of London that I would have never known of if I hadn't seen these videos.
What series will you make now? Secret rivers of London, Secrets of the Heathrow PRT? Secrets of the City Wall? :) /we demand more and we are legion! (well, maybe not a legion. A contubernium, perhaps?)
I go to CSM and walk over granary square every day and had no idea the fountains matched a basin that used to be there. Awesome. My psychogeography nerd senses will tingle every time I walk over them now.
I'd never realised that the Fleet crossed the canal in a pipe under a bridge. Silly really, as it;s obvious that they cross each other, I'd just never thought about where it went.
This canal series inspired us to take a boat tour last weekend when we were visiting London (Jasons trips). We have done lot´s of the usual tourist stuff, but this one was really brilliant. So, thanks for inspiring us :-)Keep going with these videos. I really like them!
That is brilliant. I've been to Granary Square a couple times but I didn't realise it used to be a basin. Keep up the great work Geoff. Also, I highly recommend the Canal Museum. It's very well done, the people there are helpful and friendly and they have a good selection of canal books for sale.
I did exactly this walk just yesterday, only the other way round (trying to see more of the canals after Geoff's recommendation). And yes, the acoustics under the bridges are brilliant! :)
I live in Camden. The towpath is an endless source of peace and quiet for me. I haven't yet seen any other videos in this series. I'm hoping they will tell the viewer why the canal was built. And who built it! I know these historical facts; they are part of my heritage being a Londoner and living in London,
Hey Geoff, Watched all your videos and can't wait for more. Anyway, keep up the good work and can you do the secrets of Waterloo. Thanks, Yours Sincerely Jorge
I got knocked into the canal near angel whilst cycling under a bridge by a fool in a suit on a brompton. Let me tell you, you don't need a ramp to get you out when its october! I hauled myself up looking like something in creature from the black lagoon. Shout out to the dude who knocked me in and who took off all his clothes and stood on the side like a lemon whilst I got myself out and then had to jump back in to retrieve my bike and all my belongings!!!
tomtucjr Look up the Islington Tunnel Wikipedia page. At first, they were "legged" through the tunnel, until a steam tug with a continuos chain was installed (and later replaced by a diesel engine).
tomtucjr Virtually all canal tunnels used people to walk the boat through. They would lie on top of the boat and walk along the upper wall of the tunnel.
***** Geoff's attire. First he reminds me of Cossy, who has apparently disappeared. He seems to be tall and have a long trunk. Some tall people are all leg. His below the knee shorts(I'm an American) seem similar to those of the animated character in Python interludes/asides who verbalizes nonsense about something angering him. Rugby player, referee? The left sock is blue. The right sock is orchid, magenta, bright lilac. I miss wearing colorful socks in argyle, due to compression stockings. Also the two toned or lined shirt. A blue lining contrasting with the outer raspberry sherbet.
The book shop "word on the water", is an independent shop. Why did that coffee shop have to be another bloody Starbucks. An independent cafe would've been better especially as its on the canal. A big coffee chain just doesn't look right here.
01:59 When do you know a society is full of "fat and happy" persons who can piddle around with bug hotels? When you see silly "bug hotels" along a London canal.
Loved this little series. I've already watched it twice!
This series is brilliant
Thank you for making this program. I hadn’t even considered walking the towpaths in the UK when I come to visit from the US.
Right interesting ! Cool video ! 👍👍👍🇺🇸
Mind blown. You have such a wonderfully rich city history. Thanks so much.
Fascinating series on the canals of London. You even spotted the Fleet in a pipe. Thanks for the most informative program Geoff.
Great video. I have lived in London most of my life and never knew about the green steps in Granary Square or the 'Word on the Water' floating bookshop. I will have to go and look at both as soon as I can.
Incredible! Thank you for giving me another reason to wander around on a weekend.
4:12 would have snatched up that Hendrix book there too.
This is a route I walk every day. Thank you for the interesting tid-bits of knowledge about it.
Enjoying this series, looking forward to part 3.

I'd never realised that the Fleet crossed the canal in a pipe under a bridge. Silly really, as it;s obvious that they cross each other, I'd just never thought about where it went.
Excellent stuff as per usual, Geoff. More please!

Wow John Book! I remember when your boat began to sink because it was so rammed with vinyl!
Hey Geoff, Watched all your videos and can't wait for more. Anyway, keep up the good work and can you do the secrets of Waterloo.
Thanks,
Yours Sincerely Jorge
Only came across Granary Square since the green carpet steps and Goodsway was redeveloped, otherwise never knew that the Square was there.
Do you not have access to a boat, Geoff? Happy to take you on ours if you're interested.
I’d like to borrow the boat
Will you show me around London if I buy you lunch 👍😎🌠
Geoff didn't mention the name Starbucks, but if it were a Pret, however ...
6:08 IS that the same Lock keepers cottage from the Big Breakfast G?

Oi Sheila só entrei para desejar um feliz aniversário
Você está bonita faz tempo que não à vejo
Normally how deep r these canals?
I feel stupid but how would horses pull the boat through that tunnel with no path?

nightw4tchman Those must be the horses people can lead to water, and get the horses to float on their backs as well.
Dear geoff, i have a general question for you: what is your favorite city outside of london?
piece were he said river fleet in a pipe wow ending up in a pipe is weird.
Looking
Little known fact - bridge 27 is 27m above sea level!
Did you purposely put on odd coloured socks?

Dude. Socks.

I wish Boris Johnson still lived there, it would have saved us a lot of bother.
Can you talk a little slower please?
What a beautiful city, man... and you know everything about it!
