How To Build A Snowboard From Scratch For $100: ETT
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 6 май 2015
- ETT Season 5, episode 9: In this episode of Every Third Thursday Dave Lee takes on the challenge of building a snowboard and snowboard press using materials exclusively sourced from the aisles of a home improvement store. Dave and the Rosolowski brothers comb the aisles scavenging for makeshift materials on a budget; we need hydrophobic base materials, a sturdy core, metal edges, glue to hold everything together, and finally a makeshift press to bind the layers. Is this experimental snowboard going to be a blast or a bust? Watch as we test it out on slopes of Utah’s Brighton resort!
WHAT YOU'LL NEED:
DIY Snowboard:
Cedar Fence Post (Core)
T-Bolts and Screws (Inserts)
Polywall (Base)
Glaze Coat 1 pint (Resin)
Fiberglass Cloth
L-Angle Tile Edge Trim (Edges)
Shelving Liner (Topsheet)
Spray Paint (Graphics)
DIY Press:
8 2x6’s
Wood Glue
Clamps
Lined Styrofoam

*Tip* Buy Epoxy Resin, not Glaze Coat it cracks in cold. Also, use STEEL tile edging, not aluminum, you cannot tune aluminum and it is soft.

when you are watching a video and look at the comments... and you notice a fellow baller!
You should do two builds. One using nice DIY materials and one cheap asss board.
i agree, I feel like a board like this could be dangerous after a year
yeah that's what i wanted to see too. How good can you get it using this type of stuff, and how cheap can you make it. Imagine if they'd used good material!
“I feel like a lot of people have a snowboard laying around”
So why am I watching this if I did..
borrow one from a friend and trace it
If u do ur
Lucky
@@TheRiteG no one in the south has a snowboard
3:33
plus like $2000 for tools
+Fluffyybacon you could just buy a jig saw to cut the form, an inexpensive hand planner and some $5 clamps and your set.
did u even watch the video
+Povesti Audio no1 could do this their first time around. they seem like they work and do thsi for a living or fun (first vid iv seen from them)......remember being inspired to snowboard? and then u go to snowbaord and suck... its like, why didnt they teach me in the vids, they only showed. ..
+Fluffyybacon No self respecting man complains about the cost of tools.
+Billy Jean It's not an instructional video, it's just for entertainment and inspiration.
For those who get confused it goes:1. Polywall 2.fiber cloth 3.core 4.shelf liner.
Ender Vaults thank you they weren't very clear on that part
From bottom to top or top to bottom?
Miles Monnette bottom to top
no theres one more layer of fiberglass
its polywall + aluminium - fibercloth - wood + t-nuts - fiberglass - shelf liner
There is fiberglass in between core and shelf liner
You say you’ve always wanted to take a
crack at making your own board? This ETT is for YOU!
I watch you guys just wiping epoxy over the inserts so how do you guys get the epoxy out
+Garrett Hill i believe a drill
Can you make a longer tutorial, or maybe just show more of the process? This didn't really show a lot of detail.
How long did the board last?
Cam Lentz ya im planning on doing this but there are a lot of parts missing that have me scratching my head
how to buy a decent board for under $30.....go to the goodwill! just picked up a santa cruz board for $27.
Bought my first snowboard for $20. Pawnshop in the hood hahaha!!!!
Yeah eBay and Craigslist got nice ones for 100
You guys should make a cast aluminum board by melting down soda cans and pouring into a sand mold. Just get a crapton of cans. Make a cheap charcoal and blow dryer foundry. Prepare the sand mold with sand and 2-cycle oil from home depot. Pour the aluminum. cut off the sprues. Finish with increasing grains of sandpaper.
Sick idea
I imagine itd be tricky casting such a thin object though, youd get short runs for sure.
+Devin Heaps That would be so cool! creative!!!!!
+Devin Heaps You could do what is called lost foam casting. you make the board out of styrophome then burry it in the sand. When you pour the aluminum on the styrofoam, if evaporates leaving the cavity open for the aluminum. Ive seen people cast slingshots and cross bows using this method.
+WeekendWoodworker thats a pretty cool idea but i would think the cavity of something as long as a snowboard wouldn't allow the molten aluminum spread out far enough before it cooled but i could be wrong but that would be super cool.
This is awesome it is the first episode of ETT I ever watched as I wanted to know what was involved in building a homemade board. Since then I have been hooked on various episodes from you guys even watching some multiple times over lol Being from Australia I don't often get to get out in the snow but the few times I have I have absolutely loved it and I cant wait to try building one of these boards myself to test it out sometime in the future.
Great video. Planning on doing this in the future. But I got confused at some parts and I'm assuming others did too. Can you possibly make a super in-depth, detailed video on how to do this? Thanks
This is so amazing you guys are the best, I have watched so many of your videos and checked out your snowboards. You guys easily make the best boards in the world and this video truly takes you guys to the next level in both entertainment, creative style and a sense of reality that everyone can do a home project that is of great quality and something cheap, self-made and reliable. So much respect. I hope one day to be able to meet you guys. Awesome job ... J.Murphy
Your guys' videos are awesome!!! Very creative and talented, you make it look so easy!

You guys are inspirational. Best show on Network A!
Song during the riding clips is Bites and Scratches by Bent Shapes
Thanks so man
thanks man
This is a true testament to the builders and the skill they have. This is craftsmanship
Love the way they approached this, making a kickass board and using items that are cheaper so you can actually go out and try and build one yourself
U guys r amazing... Made my day man. I was so upset that nd thought that I'll never get to try snowboarding ever... This is so helpful.
This is the best video ever....I actually learned something! It made me miss Colorado
Davey Valor it's beautiful here in Colorado
My question is how long did it last
….for an entire RUclips video. Content Creators publish or perish....
The board still exists
I’ve emailed them and they said they still have the board
My question is why would you need to make this if you have an old snowboard lying around
@@lukerogers4368 it’s just for a fun project you can do
freaking ETT is the best. this was awesome. love this series.
omg i love you shred brighton the only resort ive ever held a pass at 5 years
Once made a really top quality board complete with graphite base and the works. Also bought a NS board the same year. The DIY board cost me wayyy more due to economies of scale and an epoxy good enough to hold a board together for a long time in small batches runs costs a lot more than expected. I have zero regrets about it though, it was a great experience and it taught me a lot about what I was looking for boards when I went shopping.
I AM GOING TO TRY THIS THIS WEEKEND!!! SO EXCITED!!
This was awesome! Totally just subscribed!
Legit thinking about doing this with a couple Bros before next season. Think I'll put more work into the core and add in sidewall. But this is a great video to start planning off of! Thanks for the idea Bros!!!!!!
Thats the coolest diy project ive ever seen!
Absolutely doing this! Awesome!
Awesome video. Of course one wouldn't be able to replicate this at home that easily, especially given that you guys know what you're doing (just commenting on other comments below), but I love this series. Another nice on!
This video earned you a sub! Great video, now time to binge watch!
Song: Bent Shapes - Bites and Scratches
Could you make another video with a little bit more of a step by step process? It was good but kind of vague in some spots. Really cool though!!!
You can watch davidjones's Video where je made his diy board. He goes into Detail much more
Sending you dudes pictures of my 2 year old sons first snowboard when I'm done with it. Was inspired tonight, searched youtube found this video. Thx for the fuel dudes.
Did you get it done?
Hey I just wanted to say you guys are awesome. You have inspired me to create and try new things. I'm not very good at snowboarding. I had my first and only run last year and it was a blast. I live in Cheyenne WY and I have ranges all around me. I want to get really good but I dont have enough money for a board so I'm going to try this out and see how it goes thank you signal.
oh my god winter come back. major snowboarding itch happening. these wheels are not cutting it.
I feel you man. I've been looking through all these videos and it's having me begging for it to snow
Yeah same here ahah
+MrVitalic85 I want mountains :'( ontario is too flat
BDSMotoVlogs Dam ahah I can feel your pain. Have you ever thought about those who live in the great plain… thats sad ahah… poor poor peoples :P
+MrVitalic85 We do have ski resorts in the plains, but more hills than mountains
Best ETT in ages!
So cool! Wish I had known how to do this when I was a poor kid in high school, would have been a great project with my dad.
I paid exactly $110, no tax, free shipping, for my brand new true twin with carbon stringers and rail lock, Sapient Kurt Wastell 153cm board. You have to look hard and find a board some seller wants to get rid of (I didn't know it at the time, but Sapient was out of business), but you can get them cheap.
Hezekiah Domowski what website did purchase off of? I've been looking around and not finding much success
It took me forever to find such a deal. It was on SNS boards dot com
It was also about 6 years ago. But I'm sure there's a deal out there like that if you keep looking. January will be a better time to buy probably. Level 9 also had really good deals; I bought my boots from them. But they seem to be leaning in specializing in skis, not snowboards. But still worth looking. EVO is the best for snowboard bindings. The House is good for snowboard pants.
However, the key is to find the store looking to get rid of a brand it doesn't want anymore, and that's always changing. But hopefully that helps!
Dude so sick👌
Thanks for coming to Utah!
You guys are awesome! Keep it fun
That is awsome ! Thanks guys, I'm trying this :O
Going to Brighton for the first time next week. Can't wait
DUCT. TAPE. SNOW. BOARD.
NO. SOUNDS.GAY
DJCyberChief good thinkin dj
Already. Been. Done.
Awesome, great job!
Yeah buddy SLC,UT. Brighton for life!!!
Love ETT
This is awesome! Might have found myself a summerproject :)
That was extremely gnarly!
Sick board! Imma give a try.
This is amazing man!
You guys really know how to choose good musics
good idea for summer. especially when u arent working or somerhing
Omg Brighton!!! That's my resort!!!
So cool!
Would love to see more of the press assembly. Like how were the pieces templates and cut
This is amazing. How did it end up fairing in the long run? I was surprised it didn't snap with all the butter tricks, but I guess having left the core pretty thick kept it tough.
Awesome stuff!
Pretty brave to grind on a homemade snowboard. Awesome job!
absolutely incredible
dave lee is an actual wizard from middle earth
Pretty cool but the supplies would cost around $400 at a Home Depot in Canada
Seems a little much. Hardware stores are never the cheap though.
but you have free health care!!!!! LOL
Sahadi420 that they pay out the ass in taxes for.
my point exactly...........
@@Sahadi420 insurances are mandatory..its at least 200$ a week for my familly..we pay 17.85%taxes and 40% income taxes...no such thing as free here...no free schools either.we pay 400$/yr per household for school taxes..and at least 2000$/yr per kid in public school
Great episode! Any chance of you doing a follow up video but making it a high end board with all the stuff you put back?
You're a tool
holly smoking ..glad to see dave lee still ridin...and kids, for $100..your board wont come out rite. guarenteed
One quick comment: the aluminum edges will bother any shop that uses a stone wheel for edge grinding. When grinding aluminum it tends to flake and the flakes tend to stick to the stone wheel. These flakes are a pain to remove from your grinding wheel and can't be left on because it changes the effective grit of the wheel. I'd recommend figuring out a way to add steel edges to this contraption.
That’s impressive!
Holy crap that is fricken sweet
soooo cooool!!!!
that graphic is dope
That's sick
i'm amazedd
Nice board i'm gonna try it too
I've got just a few questions, how did you stick the bottom sheet onto the board? Did the epoxy hold it good. And for the L angle what size did you get 1/4?
😂😂😂 I thought that it was going to snap in two like a branch, straight away. 😯
yeah boi, Brighton is my 2nd home. 👊
hey ett is amazing and noticed you guys were kinda retrying a few ideas, i think it would be cool to see you refine the italian glass board the problem before was it was still brittle, maybe try combining the heated board with the glass board???
This is awesome! Is there a shopping list of items you used somewhere? Just so I don't miss anything!
that board looks really good
This is great, here I was think that the ideas for ETT were getting weak :D
Diy made by professionals? of course it's going to be awesome. I love signal.
Riding a homemade board with no helmet on! If that ain't trust to your workmanship I don't know what is lol cool board!
Holy shit that dude shreds hard!
Hey ETT,
I am going to do this now! My wife hates you! ;-)
Can you give me a tip on keeping the Base, core and top sheet all lined up in the press???
haha thats awesome, good work boys
B-Town baby!
Just built my first board and i wouldn't trade the experience for anything. Thanks ETT!!! p.s. the board rides better than the first board i bought.
Michael Heien hey man
Michael Heien im doing this for a school project and have some questions about the process
just go buy one in texas, they're as cheap as dirt here. bought mine for the vacation at pawn shop for 10 bucks. it was a Burton with timberland boot clamps.
Hey loved the vid. Could you post the exact order of everything so i dont mess up when i put it in the press lol??
Sick stick
Hi there, I'm from Italy, I really liked the video and I'm trying to build my own snowboard, but I have some questions:
1- How thick must the wood core be?
2- Why there are four more pieces of wood at the sides of the wood core (min. 3:37)?
3- How much time does it have to be pressed?
4- When and how must the t-bolts be put?
5- What size the t-bolts and the screws are?
I'd be very grateful if you could answer my questions :)
thank you
Totally off topic, but where can I get the jacket Dave is wearing under the reveal?!
Totally on topic, Loved the video! Always waiting for these to come out! :D
ima do this this winter
ahh so easy to make a snowboard! all you need is a workshop with a maul and other machinery!
I finished mine and it is awwwwssssssooooommmmmmm😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄
Wowwww nicee rideeeee!! I am a Good snowboarder too
these guys just earned my sub lol
You guys should make one with plexiglass instead of the fence post!!
lovely
what's the white material you have on the snowboard press (4:19) when you put the base with the edges down and apply your first layer of epoxy? I assume it is to stop the epoxy from getting on to the snowboard press itself? Thanks
Pretty epic
