Donald Trump is now the first former US President to face criminal charges. He pleaded not guilty to 34 counts of falsifying business records in the first degree.
This case involves hush money that Trump’s lawyer paid to an alleged former sexual partner. But it’s actually just one of four criminal investigations into the former president. The other three investigations focus on his behavior after the 2020 presidential election.
A Georgia team is examining Trump’s efforts to persuade Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger to “find” more Trump votes after the votes had been counted and Raffensperger had declared Joe Biden the winner.
Federal special prosecutor Jack Smith is heading up the other two investigations. One group is looking at the Trump team’s attempts to persuade officials in a handful of states where Biden won not to certify his victory, and instead to claim Trump won the state despite the vote counts.
The other federal investigation is focused on classified documents that Trump brought with him from the White House to his Florida estate after losing the 2020 election. According to reports from the Washington Post and the New York Times, when the FBI searched his estate in August 2022, they found documents related to nuclear weapons, as well as files containing information that could put US informants in the field in danger.
As president, Trump didn’t just say outrageous things, he acted in unprecedented ways. Now that he’s out of office, investigators in a variety of jurisdictions are trying to figure out if he broke the law, too.

All thanks to Gerald Ford for pardoning Nixon, the idea of jailing presidents remain "unprecedented".
Regarding the classified documents case, it is important to say that within the White House, there is such a ridiculous amount of classified documents that it's practically impossible to keep track of them. That's why these kinds of documents kind of show up with almost all former presidents. What is unprecedented is Trump's refusal to give those documents back after they have been found.

that call between trump and raffensperger, can't believe he talks just the same in private as when he's doing a speech
Who you on the phone with?
"That guy."
34 counts, not 34 crimes. The way the law works you can get multiple counts for the same crime. He falsified records (the crime) and the way he did it involved breaking up the payment into multiple parts. Every time he made one of those payments “counts”. Every time one of those payments was recorded for tax purposes is another count (that’s now at least 2 counts for every 1 payment, with multiple payments involved in the 1 crime of falsifying records).
You’re conflating terms. Each count is its own charge of a law broken in the commission of a crime. On their own, each count could stand as their own crime. But trump’s crime just so happens to have 34 laws the prosecutor will be trying. 34 crimes for this one crime 😂
Think of it like driving to work and getting stopped for speeding and no seatbelt. The drive is the event you’ll go to court, speeding is one charge based on a civil disobedience you committed, seatbelt the other.
Charges are per crime
@@RyanMcIntyre no. It’s 34 counts of falsifying business records. If i stabbed 2 people, I would get charged with 2 counts of homocide.
Yes you can, should and usually do get a separate indictment for each separate crime, even though they are similar. Also a separate/additional/concurrent punishment if you are found guilty.
The way I understood it was that he falsified the records 34 times or something. The payments were made in smaller pieces, not all at once
Thank you for this. So much of our media has been focusing on and playing up the charges involving Stormy Daniels because of the salaciousness of involving an adult film performer, and then performatively being let down or questioning the worth of the entire process when nothing spectacular happened. While those charges are important and should definitely be pursued, Trump's other crimes are of much greater national interest, and I appreciate you drawing that distinction.
Completely agree! The guy summed it up perfectly where he basically said it is a violation, but making this charge the first presidential indictment is ridiculous. There is almost no objectivity when it comes to Trump, so I was very happy to watch a video that seemed pretty objective (even from a source like Vox that I would have thought would never be able to be objective about Trump)
Au contraire.
There is excellent reason for Stormy Daniels to be first. Her story is that her life was threatened to keep her silenced. She wanted to go public with her story. And what happened is that American Voters got robbed of vital info to make their choice.
It is this crime that led to Trump being declared winner of the 2016 Election. This is the crime that set up all subsequent crimes he committed while in power.
He also took down all of the memorial status. And on Memorial Day he did not show up for ceremonies he also disrespected the queen Elizabeth
This should be done on every election not just Trump. This just reminds us that we are missing a lot of information.
These are sham prosecutions/cases. I’m a senior attorney at the law firm that selects which democratic candidate will be chosen “elected” when and where.

What’s a ‘district attorney’ I hear that from American media a lot and it confuses me, does an entire district with thousands of people only have one attorney? Do they handle everyone’s case? Are they voted in?
The district attorneys are essentially the chief prosecutors of their respective districts. They administer the local government organization containing all the prosecutors and are themselves the prosecutors responsible for dealing with specific, important cases. (I think in some districts, the DA personally handles all murder cases). Crucially, they are also directly elected instead of being appointed. That said, it's important to remember that the US is a federation, and even within states there's a fair amount of decentralization. This means that exactly what a district attorney varies from district to district, but the fact that the district attorney is the chief prosecutor and is directly elected is pretty much the same everywhere.
To make sure the community is safe. What he did put the community at risk that’s why he is going to jail against each district and not a person. There is multiple attorneys at the “attorney district office”

Why no highlight on the NY State civil inquiry led by Letitia James? She wants to bar the family from doing business in NY.
Good question.
That investigation also referred evidence for possible criminal charges of tax evasion and fraud.
Another thing that should be noted is that during grand jury proceedings the general rules of evidence are not applicable. That means a lot of the stuff you can present to a grand jury would be excluded from trial. Also the defendant does not get to make their case to a grand jury, they only hear one side of the argument, the prosecutors.
Weird way to do things, grand juries are unique to the american system, their role is usually played by a judge or independent prosecutor in other countries.
@@Tiwack01 not all states utilize them the same. Typically older/northeastern states use Grand Juries more frequently than newer/western states.
You been telling me to care about “this one” for like 3 years… idc anymore bro.
We all know why they are going after Trump. It is because he is different and relatable. He is not your "typical politician" and I think he will win again. But hey, let's pretend we don't.
He better call saul.
Everyone mentions the "other crime" that the hush money/business fraud needs to be tied to, but the real fatal flaw is that all of those crimes have passed the statute of limitations. This case was brought too late, and that will likely cause it to fail.
Because there's no case, just ask the federal court
@@jamesgang7605 Don't cite an anonymous source and say "it would agree with me". "The federal court" is not a monolith. I would rather ask named experts like P. Andrew Torres who covered this on episode 721 of his podcast Opening Arguments. (Link not provided because RUclips deletes comments with external links, apparently).
@@Starcrash6984 you'll find out soon enough, there's no sense in arguing with no sense!
@@jamesgang7605 Wow! You really showed me I was wrong!
Nobody ever persuades the person that they're arguing with, and that's not my goal. It's a public argument, one that another person who "has no horse in this race" can look at and say "wow, this person clearly knows what he's talking about while this other guy has nothing".
This is a great overview of all of these cases. Any chance you could do an updated version of this? Thanks
The guy flys to court in in personal jet plane and pays no taxes, and we’re debating if he is a criminal 🇺🇸
And is asking his fans to donate money. What a grifter!
This is like a VEEP special Christmas episode, if they ever did one
Such a great video, thank you for laying out the issue so clearly
He used charities fund to pay for lawyer. While he was the head of charities no tax only collected
I love how the "experts" you interview are just other Vox reporters. It's like that Obama awarding medal to Obama meme
Easy access, and guaranteed not to say anything that doesn't line up with vox's agenda
You characters are funny. Shouldn't you be gushing over at the Fox Ooze channel?
@Anglofone You misspelled your own favorite channel oan. I think I hear your sister calling you back to bed.
Someone who spends their career following and writing on a topic is an expert. It's like how a "professional" is technically someone who gets paid to do something.
Whenever I watch a Vox video I always want to comment on something related to the topic covered, but I always get side tracked by the sheer quality of the journalism, commentary and visuals displayed in every video put out. Serious props to the Vox team
Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha !!!!
Thank you. The start of the video (the simplified explanation of the criminal justice system) was outstanding for a layperson. There seems to be a bad audio cut at 04:33, might want to fix that somehow?
The true test to democracy is to held any citizen accountable no matter their status or position.
The Georgia phone call is cut and dry.
Trump will surely argue that the votes were stolen *from him* and that he was just saying that recovering 11,780 of the votes stolen from him would be enough to restore justice.
I'm sensing that Trump's opponents will definiely consider using that as part of their attack ads.
All I can say is he did this to himself
Actually, there's no proof he did it himself. He didn't pack his own boxes when he left the White House. Also, it is up to the National Archive group to make sure all boxes are gone through and classified materials are secured. Not the presidents job. Biden was busted for the same thing, so when is he being indicted.
The payment to Stormy Daniels...who cares. The phone call to the politician in Georgia, he didn't tell him to do anything. He just said he needed so many votes to make it and that there should be a recount.
Thx, it's interesting to understand all the process going on behind the scenes before arriving to an indictment!👍
You should make an updated video.
I just want to see him play the new Minecraft update coming out
I mean, it's a real predicament. What should we do when we prove someone breaks the law?
It boggles the mind, truly a riddle for the ages.
Simple... Just say you're a Democrat and you'll NEVER be prosecuted.. seems to work for Hillary, Biden, Pelosi, Schiff, Schumacher, Waters, Omar, Cortez, Kennedy and the list keeps going on and on and on...b
Lock him up!
A good introduction of the legal situation
people were saying for years that this guy is sus, now its all coming out.
And it only came out when he became president. Coincidence. Not likely..
Good job guys, we definitely need more great videos like this one!!!!👏🙏🇺🇸
To keep him in jail if he had more time outside he will stir thing and flip into his way
Good work Vox, keep it up.
Frump
North america really been focusing on all the wrong things and its truly sad to watch
Can confirm, it’s really depressing
