1992 Belmont Stakes - A.P. Indy

  • On New York's biggest and best day of racing in 1992, speed prevailed over mud at Belmont Park yesterday as Strike the Gold made a melodramatic return to his home track in a starring role. But it was A.P. Indy who won the big one, rocketing down the stretch in a power performance to snatch the 124th running of the Belmont Stakes in the final strides and win for the seventh straight time.
The colt, a 3-year-old son of Seattle Slew and a grandson of Secretariat, won by three-quarters of a length over the British import My Memoirs, who in turn had a neck over Pine Bluff, the winner of the Preakness. But nobody had a bigger payday than Pine Bluff, who earned $91,776 for finishing third plus $1 million in bonus money for the best overall performances in the three American classics: fifth in the Kentucky Derby, first in the Preakness and third in the Belmont.
But this was the day when A.P. Indy made the scene, and he did it before an enthralled crowd of 50,204 fans. He was forced to skip both the Derby and the Preakness because of a bruised hoof, but he raced the mile and a half of the Belmont Stakes in 2:26 flat, two seconds off the record set in 1973 by his illustrious grandfather. He matched the second-fastest time, set in 1989 by Easy Goer.

Really enjoyed Jim McKay and Charlsie Cantey on these broadcasts back in the day, everything about the upcoming race had such a great feel to it, anticipating the race and even in the winners circle Jim had a way of cracking me up the way he would speak to the trainers, owners, jockeys…
In the winners circle here with the owner Jim says “oh we have an interpreter” the interpreter responds “I did already” and Jim responds “well, what does he wanna say?”
    Miss him very much 😆

The son of Seattle Slew was a great one like his daddy, it wasn,t meant to be but A.P, Indy was as good and better than some horses who have won the triple crown, he won The Belmont 2nd fastest in history, only Secretariat A.P. Yes! He was so easy to spot in every race he ran because of that distinct stride of his. I could pick him out in any race even if I didn't know what post position he had and without listening to the call. It was easy because of his style. And what a legend he became as a sire. One of my favorite horses all time. It's sad to know his breeding days are over, but he made such an incredible mark to the world of thoroughbred racing.

He had his daddy's dauntless, grinding style, matched with his grandpa's stride and running body position, like American Pharoah. There is no question in my mind that he would have won the TC had he not had to scratch from the Derby. All those babies came by their talent honestly!

He paid $2.9 million for AP Indy as a yearling and today that would be the equivalent of over $4.6 million dollars. He was worth every penny. I can’t imagine the return from the breeding if the owner maintained all or just some of the breeding rights. Dug in the track like Seattle Slew and had the stride of Secretariat. Most of his confirmation seemed to be like Secretariat with the exception of the classic notch in his back like Slew and his foals. His only fault was his shelly feet. He was a beautiful horse.

+Marguerite Shadowgirl A length is literally the length of a horse nose to tail.. horse is ahead by say 3, then he's three horse lengths ahead.
