2007 Belmont Stakes - Rags To Riches

  • No, it did not start well for Rags to Riches, or for that matter the filly's jockey, John Velazquez, or her trainer, Todd Pletcher. She stumbled out of the gate for the 139th running of the Belmont Stakes, and for a heart-in-your-throat moment, Velazquez and Pletcher had a simultaneous and bitter thought: Why did we do this? Why did we run this girl against the boys when history told us it was foolish?
Two minutes later, however, Velazquez had Rags to Riches eyeball-to-eyeball with the Preakness champion, Curlin, and Pletcher was on his feet in a clubhouse box, his heart thumping in his chest, his voice uncharacteristically growing louder.
"Come on, baby! Come on, baby! Come on, baby!" Pletcher cried, his voice growing more urgent with every stride.
He is a placid man by nature, and a humbled one when it comes to Triple Crown races. He has been the nation's leading trainer three years running, but before yesterday he had saddled 28 horses in the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness Stakes and the Belmont, and had not visited the winner's circle.

Most horses have a load of fantastic stallions in their bloodlines... look at any shoddy claimer and you’ll see. It really matters more if they are related closely through the mare...

@Smogger911 Hey, cretin. You're confusing the magnificent Northern Dancer with the magnificent Native Dancer. True, Native Dancer was the sire of Northern Dancer's dam. But both of the Dancers were sound horses. The fragile horse problem may have started with Native Dancer's magnificent son Raise A Native. Unbeaten as a two-year-old, he was retired due to a bowed tendon. And that bloodline is found in a staggering number of horses. Native Dancer and Raise A Native are two of the most important sires in racing history but not quite at the level of the greatest of them all, Northern Dancer. He's denoted among Chefs-de-Race as [BC]. For the cretinous like you, that means Northern Dancer's line is rated Brilliant for speed and Classic for stamina. Why don't you do some homework before you spew garbage and lol like a 13-year-old girl?

      @goforwand31 5 лет назад +4

@Smogger911 Early peaking 2yos? I guess you never saw how many of his progeny have won DISTANCE races in Europe and elsewhere around the world. One of his sons is the last European TC in fact. His offspring could run a variety of distances and surfaces. What's destroyed the industry is breeding to the likes of Mr. P and Storm Cat who got early speedsters but not much else. Look at what's in the industry today. Most don't even finish their 3yo careers, much as less make 10 lifetime starts.

@@richfairclough123 Yes, learning from reading, turns out that the top broodmares called "blue hens", are the foundation of a great breeding operation. AND, turns out, Secretariat turned out to be a top broodmare sire, taking after his maternal grand sire, the glorious Princequillo. His story, sired in France, taken to England when the Nazis were about to march into Paris, and on to Ireland where he was born, then brought over to the U. S. across the Atlantic which was infested with German U-Boats !!! No wonder he had great bone, strength AND stamina. He arrived a baby looking like he had been put through a wringer.

Put another way, Secretariat finished the Belmont in 2:24
, which will likely never be beat. Justify in 2:28.18 and Rags to Riches at 2:28.6. So if they had all raced together, Justify and Rags would have been fighting for second place, and if Rags had had a better break and trip around the track she would have had a shot against him. But her great-grandfather would have beaten them both soundly.

@@sheilatruax6172 "...shouldn't have been in the 80 Derby or Rachel Alexandra in the Preakness."
Really? There were some who said Rachel Alexandra shouldn't have been in the Preakness? Did they not watch the Kentucky Oaks that year? She DESTROYED those poor fillies. She more than earned her spot in the Preakness. I remember hearing some trainers were attempting to pay and prevent her from getting the final post position for nothing more than pure intimidation. They knew she was that good and so they did not want her there. Hilarious to watch their worst fears realized and to put some salt in that wound, ends up being the first filly to win the Preakness in 80+ years.
I highly doubt RTR did anything for a horse that was put to sleep 29 years before she foaled. Or am I missing something. Did she give an acceptance speech after winning and mentioned Ruffian? Humans personify things way too much.

"Rags to Riches resumed training at age 4. Then on March 24, 2008, Todd Pletcher announced that she had re-injured her right front pastern and was retiring." she toyed with Curlin as he never headed her. As for the slow 3/4 time watch some European race shapes plus times, when they win like that they call them "great."

+Salice McCool I was probably drunk when I typed this comment. I wouldn't generally make this kind of broad sweeping statement. Curlin certainly was a classic horse. He actually ran identical speed figures to Rags to Riches on this day I believe. The rigorous campaign of running all 3 triple crown races probably made the difference between Curlin losing by a neck. Both fantastic horses.

Maybe someone can explain the weight difference issue to me. It's in place to remove the natural physical advantage of male over female horses, no? So why do so many racing professionals seem to view it as instead granting an advantage to a filly or mare? In the case of an Amazon like Zenyatta, I get it, but otherwise . . .

  • @perryarrington8446

Give RTR much credit she was game and won this particular Belmont. However, never even believe that Rags To Riches is a better racehorse than the great Curlin. RTR had her day but their (Curlin and Rags To Riches) careers aren't close to being comparable. Not even debatable

And when they saw that a filly could win at a mile and a half, they changed the rules to make it nigh impossible for a filly to get nominated to the Triple Crown.

  • @abbyarnold4477

Everyone is giving secretariat overwhelming credit but most people don't realize that he had abnormally extra large lungs which helped him outpace other horses down the stretch . And American pharaoh was a fix . Justify is a true champion and took on new comers . Pharaoh ran against the same horses many times .

I don't understand how the Belmont ruined Rags to Riches. Its not uncommon for fillies to only have one really good season usually when they're 2 or 3. After age three a lot of fillies going on mares no longer have a desire to race because of hormonal changes. That is also part of the risk in racing/buying fillies. But then you have mares like Zenyatta who have successful 3, 4, 5, and 6 year old seasons. It just depends.
